There must be a better book on the subject. All areas are covered, but some are noticeably lacking in detail, for example, Immigration visas are talked about, but no mention is made of the two stages of paperwork, or the interview and medical you will have to go through, or the sort of information and documents you will need to provide.
Also, very much to my annoyance for a book that you think is going to try and dispel some of the myths about America, with a section entitled `Getting rid of misconceptions', it contains many statements that actually reinforce stereo types or makes some new ones, for example:
1 - `America is too violent... BUT sport... spectator violence is almost unheard of'. What about the basic fact that you are many many more times likely to be mugged, burgled or have your car stolen in any major European country. When it does happen in the USA, it is far more likely to involve a gun. America has a very low crime rate, due primarily to the huge spread of its population.
2 - Under Restaurants, `Family ones rarely allow alcohol'. Where? With my experience (and my wife's lifetime) in Louisiana, California, Texas and Massachusetts, that just is not true, actually I have yet to find a restaurant that did not serve alcohol, not confusing cafes or burger bars with restaurants.
3 - (My favorite) `It can be quite intimidating to follow cars with guns on the back shelf...' Again, where, what! In some rural parts of Louisiana you might see this, but then they would be hunting rifles in a rack on the back shelf. I have spent 12 months in the USA over a 3 year period and have still to see a civilian with a gun.
I am immigrating to America, but as my wife is American I have spent much time here. My wife was raised in Louisiana, and has lived in Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California and Boston, Massachusetts - what REAL experience of America or emigrating there or of living there does this author have? There is no author background in the book. Find another book, another source.

Quality on Quality.......2001-08-31
This is a professional's book! It covers quality control at the level that you need -- whether a novice in the field or an experienced professional. It does an excellent job of interrelating all of the aspects of quality control, while letting you focus on the topic at hand; you never feel that you are "out of place" in the process. This book is so good that we are going to use it as the reference/source for our training programs that cover not only quality control but quality control's relationship with other aspects of operations management and program management. I have even incorporated it into an undergraduate course I teach on quality management and productivity. There's something in it for every technical professional in the workplace today.

Good coverage of interesting topic.......2000-08-18
Too much has been made of Lewis & Clark. The real exploration of America's West Coast and the real contribution to American culture was that of a select group of Boston traders who departed poor their New England homes, turned round the Cape, and up to the Pacific Northwest, there trading iron and wool for otter skins, the most dense and precious of all mammal pelts and one of two items alone that the Chinese would deign to purchase from Americans.
Gibson tells the stories of these men, the men who established profitable trade for America, who brought hard currency into a broken economy, who set the stage for the American heritage of exploration cum capitalism that we see today in Silicon Valley.
I don't believe it is a coincidence that the shares held by the investors (half), captain (tenth), supercargo (seven percent), and crew (33 percent, total) mirrors that of technology companies today.

Lower and upper probabilities without Keynes and Boole.......2004-11-07
This collection of essays,edited by Suppes and Zanotti(SZ),would have been given a five star rating except for the fact that the first portion of the book,Part I ,The Foundations of probability,which deals extensively with lower and upper probabilities and qualitative axioms for conditional probabilities,fails to mention even once the basic work done by Boole that was adapted by Keynes in his 1921 A Treatise on Probability(TP), in chapters 15,17,20 and 22, into a systematic approach to the specification of lower and upper probabilities.Another glaring ommission is the failure of the authors to consider Keynes's attempt,the first in history,to provide an axiomatic foundation that would be applicable to both numerical and nonnumerical(this is the name Keynes gave to his lower-upper interval estimates of probability)probabilities on pp.135-138 of the TP.Nonetheless,this book is worthwhile if the reader is a specialist in mathematical probability and the philosophy of probability.

Monotonicity in Markov Reward and Decision Chains: Theory and Applications focuses on monotonicity results for dynamic systems that take values in the natural numbers or in more-dimensional lattices. The results are mostly formulated in terms of controlled queueing systems, but there are also applications to maintenance systems, revenue management, and so forth. The focus is on results that are obtained by inductively proving properties of the dynamic programming value function. A framework is provided for using this method that unifies results obtained for different models. The author also provides a comprehensive overview of the results that can be obtained through it, in which he discusses not only (partial) characterizations of optimal policies but also applications of monotonicity to optimization problems and the comparison of systems. Monotonicity in Markov Reward and Decision Chains: Theory and Applications is an invaluable resource for anyone planning or conducting research in this particular area. The essentials of the topic are presented in an accessible manner and an extensive bibliography guides towards further reading.
