This book can be confusing, with insufficient examples, coming perilously close to techno-speak too often.
Disappointed in what is missing........2003-09-15
I was looking for a book that would explain linear programming (optimization modeling) and pivot tables - the book did an excellent job for those two tasks, so I bought it. My mistake was in assuming that the MBA moniker meant that it would cover most of the features for which MBA's use Excel. I was first disappointed when VLOOKUP (vertical lookup) and HLOOKUP (horizontal lookup) were not covered. Next, I was surprised that macros are not covered. The last straw was when I read that the only way to fix a circular reference in Excel is to remove it - FALSE. I'm no Excel guru but even I can use help and find out how to step through iterations manually to solve when a circular reference is necessary (e.g. pay out 10% of gross profits as long as net profits are greater than $1,000). Don't be fooled by the title.

This book is a very readable book on inquiry based teaching and learning. It is a good book for anyone interested in education... in schools, museums, or similar educational institutions. What I found useful is that the authors clearly understood the needs and concerns of classroom teachers, and were not interested in producing a purely academic textbook. They do a good job of talking about the value of using inquiry in the classroom, give practical examples, and offer a variety of lessons they have tested, that teachers can use directly, or use as models to design their own. It is an area of education that is seeing increasing interest by school administrations. I recommend this as a valuable introduction written by teachers who know their stuff!

I am planning to buy a new car soon and I hate being pressured by sales people. Bobby Covic's book was extremely helpful in formulating a strategy. It had an unexpected bonus in that it helped me get a better price on some furniture I was buying by using some of the techniques I read about. Buy this book. You will make the purchase price back the first time you apply the knowledge you will gain by reading it!
This stuff really works--anyone can learn it........2004-03-23
This isn't pie-in-the sky stuff. These ideas are easy and they work. I even used Covic's "negotiation coach" service (You pay him a portion of savings) to cut a hospital bill from $2,400 to less than $500.
Covic uses stories of actual negociations from hotel room shopping to automobile purchases. The most powerful tools are his polite, little phrases anyone can use to get a better price. For example, I used "How negociatable are you on the garage rent?" to move a landloard from $500 a month to $450. Once you get in the habit of negociating on small purchases, it's an easy jump to the big stuff like cars, mortgages, and home buying.
This book may seem too simple in places, but it works almost every time.
You'll start saving on every transaction, without any heavy handed, eye-to-eyeball stuff.
By the way, Covic is a tax professional who deals with the IRS representing customers who owe money to Uncle Sam.

Negotiations are not intuitive to everybody. And the salesmen know this. Everything's Negotiable gives you the tools to meet and beat the fast talker at his own game. So often we are rushed by sales people who tend to pass on a sense of urgency for which we are not prepared. Mr. Covic helps one turn the schedule in our favor. Bobby's writing style combines learning great buying techniques with a sense of humor. The stories are told simply and the results are financially profound.
I always thought that the salesmen knew something I did not. Now, I buy professionally from salesmen that I've forced to treat me as an equal. Saving money is a lifestyle. Everything's Negotiable shows us how to keep this notion in mind. I started making winning deals the first week after I set the book down. My Boss and My Wife are very pleased.

This book was handed around my engineering team 15 years ago, and it sparked some great dialog which lead to real improvements in our work as a team. I've since left that organization, employed now at a small software company as their quality director. This time, I plan to be the one handing around the copies.
A modern fable about quality........2004-10-11
I read this book back in the 80s and it is still quite relevant today. It talks about a fictional company called Punctuation and how it lost market share to an up and coming company. The reason they lost market share was due to quality. How to reverse that trend is the nature of this story. Suffice to say many companies (and bosses) continue to fall into the same traps to regain their market share and profitablity.
This is a great and quick read about what quality should be. Since it is so brief and the language is so simple, most reading audiences can easily understand the topic and moral of the story. It would be a great book to hand out to production, service, and management personnel.

As frightening as the volume of the book might see, it is written very well and it is very contemporary with the topics discussed in.
The book is divided in several sections with general theory and implications disussed first and with some real cases presented afterwards. Each case is usually backed with some questions to think about and to extract the essence of it. The complete book feels like being a student in the class with authors performing as teachers (as they also do sometimes).
Concepts of strategy are extremely tricky. It can hardly been negotiated if there is a strategy or if you just got to have the feeling or if there simply are people who earn 1 million US$+ a year that turn into gold everything they touch and you can't run a serious business without them. This book will help you understand that strategy exists, will teach you how to define it and set it through and how to predict the future and react on it. But as real life is, many things can happen. You get the driver's licence after you learn the basics of driving. But no one can tell after you get the licence if you will get involved into the crash and when.
Many people expect from such books that they will get a broad pavement covered with roses to walk through their careers on simply by paying some 70 US$. How naive they sound sometimes. The pen alone doesn't write a book, it is just an instrument to success, behind which stands an enormous human effort. This wonderful book is only an instrument to avoid some crashes of company in your career. If it can therefore win you a job or a mere 100 US$ raise, it has paid back heavily, don't you think?
