Book Description
This book reveals the complex factors that influence the real and perceived effectiveness of academic leaders. It shows that the qualities commonly thought to be indicators of good leadership are irrelevant and often counterproductive. It explains that successful academic leadership can be defined by the extent to which strategic constituencies?faculty, students, and others who share in campus leadership?support the president.

Professional, Outstanding, must-book for HiEd People!.......2000-09-23
The book is just wonderful and the language very easily understandable. The book is a must for everyone who is interested or involved in the business of Highee Education. I would recommend to biuy Dr. Birnbaum's new book and also "How Colleges Work". Your library will get richer if you get this book from Amazon.com as you may also familiarize with the Table of Contents. Dr. Birnbaum is a great scholar and a professional. I am from Tbilisi, Georgia and studied at Kent State University and Dr. Birnbaum's book was very difficult to get as everyone loved it and wanted to have his own copy. So, why wait? Rush to get this book and the other one!

Book Description
A step-by-step approach to taking your small business global
Despite a world of opportunities, many entrepreneurs are paralyzed when it comes to the prospect of expanding overseas. In Global Jumpstart, Ruth Stanat and Chris West take the mystery out of going global. Drawing upon years of helping companies expand into new markets, they present a comprehensive and practical guide for establishing a global mindset, undertaking research, building competitive intelligence, assessing customer needs, and evaluating a wide variety of expansion options, from exporting to franchising to joint ventures. Packed with solid, up-to-date information, and featuring the "global marketing audit," Global Jumpstart is an essential resource for any entrepreneur with global ambitions.
Customer Reviews:
Absorb, Digest, and Then Do It.......2000-10-20
I am convinced that E-Everything includes E-Everyone. That is to say, directly or indirectly, every company (regardless of size or nature) is involved in globalization. This book may not be "the complete resource for expanding small and midsize businesses" but I know of no other single volume which offers more and better guidance. The authors organize their material within nine chapters which range from "The Global Business" to "Measuring Your Success." They then provide an excellent Appendix which discusses "Five Stages of Organizational Development for Small Firms" followed by a second Appendix which explains how to create a "Global Marketing Plan."
If your organization is unsure as to how to proceed, here is my suggestion. Select key people and purchase for each a copy of this book. Next, select a date and an off-site location to conduct a rigorous workshop during which this book serves as the agenda. Insist that all participants read the book in advance. Finally, make it crystal clear that you expect the group to formulate a "Game Plan" to implement. Build into that plan measurement and accountability devices. Don't expect superior performance. Demand it! Why accept less?
If you haven't read it some place else, then read this book.......2000-03-29
This is just a repeat of the many books that are already on the market. No new information is revealed from what the other 100 books have already presented.

Book Description
Both horrified and fascinated by a visit with his geography students to the Canada Packers Lethbridge plant, Ian MacLachlan searched for a book that would explain the main features of the Canadian meat packing industry. Finding very little available, he set about writing an account of the industry that is both an economic geography and economic history.
Comprehensive in its treatment of the whole system surrounding the Canadian beef industry, Kill and Chill offers a history of the structural changes in Canada's cattle and beef commodity chain, beginning with calf production and cattle feeding on farms and feedlots. It goes on to describe the changes in cattle marketing, the historical development of meatpacking-in particular the emergence of Canada's 'Big Three' meatpacking firms-and the rise of meatpacking unionism. Carrying the story almost to the present with the takeover of Maple Leaf by the McCain family in the mid-1990s, the work concludes with a discussion of current trends in retail beef marketing.

Customer Reviews:
Glimps of the early beginnings... how soon we forget........2007-03-25
Cultural memory gets lost so fast in this age of marketing and news hype. A cyber community created less than 15 years ago seems to the current cyber generation to be as ancient as raising the flag on Signal Hill in San Francisco during the Gold Rush Days. Impatient "new generation" people, only focused on the now and the future, discard any respect for what may be learned from the pioneers of the past. This book reveals the very human side of how AOL was started. It took unique people with an inate understanding of what actions, attitudes and obligations are inherent to being a part of a community. While the style is to recount stories from the point of view of the author who was an infulencial founding pioneer, each story tells much more about where he and where we come from that ultimately lead to the "now" of early AOL. In retrospect, and in light of the currently faddish "My Space", one wonders why AOL so mistakenly wandered away from the community foundaton. All it needed was to keep up with the technolgy and expand on the concept. Those currently running AOL would do well to go back and read this book. Those who have never given much thought to how a cultural phenomenon started, will be bemused by how it all began.
Bizarre, near-schizophrenic rant.......2002-06-14
Intending to tell the story of "AOL Community" in the old days through his own experiences, former AOL Forum Leader George ends up repeating it in this cranky, disconnected, and occasionally psychotic rant. It's true that the earlier years in AOL forums and chat were an interesting time, and there are many good stories that could be told. This book is more of a glimpse into the strange and twisted world of "remote staff" and forum volunteers. George slides into pipe-in-mouth storytelling about his own life too much, and even includes recipes. Recommended for the student of abnormal psychology only.
Long-Winded and Tedious Beyond Belief........2002-04-17
I was looking forward to reading this book because I remember the very early days of AOL, and I thought some insider's perspectives from that era would be fascinating. And they probably would be, if this guy would stop rambling, pontificating, and congratulating himself long enough to make a coherent point. This is barely even a book--it's like a parody of bad, pointless writing. (It has several introductions--that should have been a big red warning sign.)
Now that's Community.......2000-09-29
Thank you, George, for giving us a living reminder of what AOL's community used to be about ... I use your vision of what it was to contrast with what it has become since AOL passed on the opportunity to reward you and your teams for building a world-class company. Check out Chapter 13 of In Search Of America Online (www.insearchofaol.com) ... you're still our hero!
Sean
Say It Isn't So, George.......2000-02-20
Loved the book but did not want it to end. First cried, then laughed, and could not put it down until nearing the end. Did not want to part with what felt like being a part of a personal diary. Thank you, George, for sharing with us part of your life and AOL's beginnings. Until another By George comes along I will continue to re-read the first.

Book Description
Models and Experiments in Risk and Rationality presents original contributions to the areas of individual choice, experimental economics, operations and analysis, multiple criteria decision making, market uncertainty, game theory and social choice. The papers, which were presented at the FUR VI conference, are arranged to appear in order of increasing complexity of the decision environment or social context in which they situate themselves.
The first section `Psychological Aspects of Risk-Bearing', considers choice at the purely individual level and for the most part, free of any specific economic or social context. The second section examines individual choice within the classical expected utility approach while the third section works from a perspective that includes non-expected utility preferences over lotteries. Section four, `Multiple Criteria Decision-Making Under Uncertainty', considers the more specialized but crucial context of uncertain choice involving tradeoffs between competing criteria -- a field which is becoming of increasing importance in applied decision analysis. The final two sections examine uncertain choice in social or group contexts.
