2 out of 5 stars Provides only a superficial analysis of the TOEIC.......2001-06-12

Kaplan’s specialty is the GMAT and GRE exams. That is certainly clear when you work through their Essential Review for the TOEIC Exam. Out of all the TOEIC test preparation materials in print, this is one of the least effective books on the market. It gives a very superficial analysis of the TOEIC test, has a small number of practice exercises, and arranges everything on the page in a sloppy, confusing manner. Essential Review for the TOEIC does have some positives though. For example, the exercises in this book are not terribly written. They do somewhat approximate what you will find on actual TOEIC exam. In addition, Kaplan explains all of their answers in a clear and helpful manner. However, for (...), you get so little material that it is probably not worth the money. There is one practice test and a few practice exercises for each test section. The material in Essential Review for the TOEIC adds up to two practice tests, if that. That means you are paying (...) per test here, which is too much compared to other TOEIC test-prep books on the market. In addition, Kaplan’s book provides a fairly superficial analysis of the question types you will find on the TOEIC. It is nothing close to the analysis given in Peterson’s TOEIC Success. Finally, the presentation of Kaplan’s Essential Review for the TOEIC is messy to the point of distraction. The way the material is arranged on the page has an old time, pre-computer, even pre-twentieth century kind of feeling. If you can only buy one book for the TOEIC exam, I would recommend against Kaplan’s Essential Review for the TOEIC Exam (even if you can get it for (...) used). Go with Peterson’s TOEIC Success or ETS’ Official Test Preparation Guide rather than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent preperation for TOEIC!.......2000-06-29

Kaplan has published a TOEIC prep. book that is up to its usual high professional standards. This book has been a great aid to all our students at the Naresuan University Language Centre. It is easy to use and understand. The material is well researched and the sample tests are quite close to the actual TOEIC. I strongly recomend this book.

This book provides great advice and understanding of basic negotiation from the female angle. It also provides excellent guidance on some key specific negotiation situations. Ms. Keller even helps women understand that they have the right to expect positive outcomes. I would recommend to purchasers of my book CAPITALIZING ON BEING WOMAN OWNED that they also purchase this book so they are prepared with a one-two punch to make their businesses succeed.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the non statistician.......2004-01-19

I picked up this book because I've been recently delving into the works of W. Edward Deming. I find it incredible that his works aren't taught in school, but I also as a previous reviewer has stated, this book is not for the statistical beginner or even intermediate. I do have a college degree and consider myself intelligent and stronger than average in math, but this is not an easy book to understand.

      1 out of 5 stars Oof!.......2002-08-13

This may be the most inaccesible management book I've ever read. I picked it because of Shewart's exalted position in the quality movement - as the mentor and intellectual guide to Deming, he is the theorist behind the quality of our cars, VCRs and televisions.

Unfortunately, his writing is enormously hard to read and apply. The mathematics were very hard to penetrate - dozens of pages to even get to basing control charts on standard deviations. I've got a minor in mathematics, so I was suprised by the difficulty. It was near impossible to derive quality lessons from the book.

In deference to the author, I'll make a lot of excuses for him:
      - It was written a long time ago.
      - The book was aimed at statisticians, not managers.
      - A compilation of Shewart's ideas would be more effective than lecture notes.

My end recommendation - browse before you buy.

      5 out of 5 stars Timess Shewhart.......2000-10-18

This book is the culmination of the philosophy of Dr. Shewhart . Dr. Shewhart was virtually unknown till he delivered a series of lectures which were then edited and converted into this book by W. Edwards Deming . Dr. Deming recognised the importance of these lectures and felt that this would be the best way to popularise Shewhart's works . Shewhart's earlier book " Economic Control of Quality in Manufactured Product " was the second recorded book on Quality ( 1931 ) . His concepts of the " old Way " and " New Way " of doing businesses are relevant even today . Shewhart touched on topics which Management gurus refer to even today . This book first introduced the " Scientific Method of Improvement " which we now know as the Shewhart - Deming PDSA cycle for improvement . All in all a timeless piece of writing and a must for every Quality / Management fanatic.

      Book Description

Among these outstanding writers/presenters are: Don Kracke, an advertising and marketing executive whose private sector proposals have resulted in millions of dollars of business from more than 30 major U.S. corporations Carol Geisbauer, who runs a tiny, community-based local organization and gets more than 20 out of every 25 public grants funded each year simply by following her "technical/political" format in approaching RFPs Jay Abraham, one of the few proposal writers who specializes in cold calling and selling with "proposal/letters" In this book, these three proposal writers and 16 others show you that writing a proposal is more than just answering a request. It is obtaining insight into what the prospective client/company/government agency really wants. You'll learn: The advantage of the "laundry list" approach in private sector proposals How to get decision makers on your side before the decision The inside approach to the two most common proposals submitted to government agencies—RFPs (Request for Proposal) and RFQs (Request for Quotation) How to plan and prepare the graphics, format, style, and language of a written proposal The ideal length and content for a verbal proposal and when you should make one The psychology, format, and language for internal/external proposals

This book will have value to someone just beginning to explore either federal contracts or grants. It is fairly dated and attempts too much for its size, but it provides enough information to be useful without danger of overwelming the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Profound and practical.......2005-11-17

Having been in the middle of a number of crisis communications incidents at a university and medical institution, I immediately related to Baron's examples of the feeding frenzy that is the media world today. His discussion of the tendency to seek easy villains without concern for truth is very useful to draw on when talking to people caught in the middle of a feeding frenzy - or even people just trying to plan for the inevitable day when there will be a crisis. I was reminded of reasons that many of us have left journalism ... That all said, one should quickly note that it's not just the media that create the frenzy - it's also all of us who consume the media. And now, many of the people who were formerly consumers can 'make' news themselves. Baron covers all the new ways that people in all parts of the community can use technology to raise issues, both for good and bad.

This book is the best one in its field when it comes to rolling up its sleeves and offering pragmatic guidance. Baron has been there and done it. He can help you and your company survive. 5 out of 5 stars A practical guide for charitable advisors.......2003-02-02

This book is a practical and thorough guide to charitable and planned giving tools and techniques, written by leading experts in the field. It contains detailed analysis, planning examples, questions and answers, graphs, and helpful tables, forms, and samples.

In addition to useful technical information such as when to use a charitable lead trust, and how to structure gifts from retirement plans, the book also delves into more sensitive planning issues such as how to recognize ethical dilemmas, and how to manage a planned giving team which mixes both non-profit and commercial sector advisors.

Furthermore, it provides up-to-date analysis of charitable and planned giving trends, including the use of the Internet, information on specialized software packages, and a detailed chapter-by- chapter bibliography recommending related and timely books, articles, and websites.

This book is suitable for the following readers:

                    Planned Giving Staff
                    Development Staff
                    Attorneys
                    Accountants
                    Financial Planners
                    Insurance Agents
                    Trust Officers

Because the book balances cutting edge techniques with the need to avoid overly aggressive and risky planning, charities may find it advantageous to provide copies to their Advisory Board members and other commercial sector advisors with whom they work. And since the book contains detailed information, ranging from basic to advanced, about charitable planning tools, laws, and trends, advisors who want to include such plans in their portfolio will find this book handy in developing both sound plans for their clients and profitable working relations with non-profit organizations.

                          Book Description

All of us can walk barefoot across yards of broken glass without the slightest injury. But few of us believe that we can. Walking on broken glass is a powerful physical metaphor for shattering the shackles of apprehension that grip us all when we try something new. John Timperley walks with bare feet on 2000 shards of glass to demonstrate conclusively that a focused mind, creativity, willingness to try and commitment to see it through can allow us all to achieve the apparently impossible. In Barefoot on Broken Glass Timperley reveals the secrets of personal and organizational success. Anything is possible if we adapt to (or create) change and unleash the full potential of the people around us by inspiring them to focus on a believable vision with passion, commitment and urgency.
Barefoot on Broken Glass is the book we need in an age when the pace of change has never been faster, where pressure to perform has never been greater, and where stress related illnesses have rocketed to levels that are shocking the medical profession. By rising above the seeming chaos and by using our minds in a more productive and creative way we can perform at higher levels than ever before.

3 out of 5 stars Good Recipes, but NOT a master class lesson in sight........2004-11-01

This book does not qualify as a `Master Class' in Japanese Cooking, because it has none of the hallmarks of a true master class. Two `master class' books by teachers would be Julia Child's `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' and Marcella Hazan's `Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking'. Two modern `master class' books by great American chefs would be Thomas Keller's very new `Bouchon' and Paul Bertolli's `Cooking By Hand'. I point out two kinds of authors for `master class books because Ms. Kazuko's book is neither.

Ms. Kazuko is not a chef. She is a Japanese journalist transplanted to the United Kingdom, where this book was written and printed. Although I am sure she is well trained in Japanese cookery, I sense she does not have the depth of knowledge as Ms. Child and Ms. Hazan. Her role in this book is that of editor or anthologist. All the true culinary writing is done by twenty (20) chefs, twelve (2) based in Japan, two (2) based in the United Kingdom, one (1) from Germany, three (3) from the United States, one (1) from Australia, and one (1) from Hong Kong. Each of these chefs has contributed one or more classic Japanese recipes in eleven different chapters. Ms. Kazuko has contributed the introduction, and chapters on the tea ceremony, the culinary regions of Japan, and `the Japanese store cupboard'. These contributions are brief and serve no better purpose than to familiarize a non-Japanese reader with some of the highlights of Japanese culinary landscape. This is a sure giveaway that the book is far more a survey for foreigners than it is a monograph on advanced techniques. But, even as an introductory text these chapters fall short in that there are virtually no pictures of a very visual tea ceremony, no helpful map for people to whom the geography of Japan is an almost complete mystery, and no pictures accompanying almost all of the descriptions of Japanese staple foods and condiments.

Most of the individual recipes appear to be in a classic Japanese style, although some have been metamorphosed by a transplantation to Hawaii or other distant lands still under the sway of Japanese culture. There are few French or Italian methods, although some classic French ingredients such as Foie gras do make an appearance. Most recipes fill a page with four sections. A brief paragraph by the editor introduces the `master chef'. A second headnote paragraph by the chef discusses some of the finer points they feel you should know about the recipe. The list of ingredients is neatly divided into sections when the recipe has separate preparations such as sauce and main preparation. Most ingredient measurements are given in both metric and English units. When only one unit is present, it is the English unit. Most unit conversions are very good, although some may be off by as much as 20%, which is no major crime, as I have seen Patricia Wells be off by that much on occasion. A few ingredient descriptions may be a bit vague, as in the specification for `1 salad lettuce'. This may be perfectly clear to a reader in London, but I think a Yank may be scratching their head trying to decide between iceberg, leaf lettuce, Romaine, of Boston lettuce. The irony is that the editor's headnote says the chef believes there are too many ambiguous words in classic Japanese recipes.

If this were a true `master class' book for non-Japanese, I would expect it to be divided more by technique such as knife skills, sushi, tempura, broths, and hibachi than by the traditional western chapters with tofu replacing polenta and nori and raman replacing semolina pasta. There is no discussion whatsoever about the style of knife unique to Japanese cuisine. This is odd, because whether or not they use the French or the Japanese styles of knife can generally define all the world's cuisines. This is especially odd since so much is made in western presentations of Japanese culinary practice about the great knife skills of the sushi chef.

The individual recipes, I believe, are generally quite good, even though the arrangement of recipes really runs counter to a book on classic techniques. The very first recipe in the first chapter on appetizers is a sashimi recipe requiring fairly advanced knife skills about which the book says nothing. The recipe refers to the katsura-muki technique for creating thinly shaved sheets of daikon and refers to another page which provides nothing so much as a picture of what these thinly shaved sheets will look like. There is nothing on how to properly hold knife or hand or vegetable, or what knife is best to use for this technique. The chapter on stocks and soups contains not a single recipe on stocks. A book on French cuisine with such a chapter would begin with no fewer than three and as many as eight different stock recipes. It is obvious from this book that the Japanese are much closer to Italian thinking about stock than to French. Just as Italian cuisine is based on a simple brodo, Japanese cooking seems to be based almost entirely on a fish stock (dashi). Rather than giving us one recipe and using it in all soup dishes, each author gives his own dashi recipe. When Jeremiah Tower did an omnibus book cooking with many major American chefs, he provided pantry recipes for all his colleagues. But then, Jeremiah Tower is a major culinary talent.

This is not a bad book but it suffers by the less than proficient writing style of editor Kazuko and her publisher's copy editing resources were a little thin in putting together this book.

If you want a true class on Japanese cooking, try `Japanese Cooking A Simple Art' by Shizuo Tsuji. I have not read the book yet, but a quick skim tells me it has everything I find missing in Ms. Kazuko's compilation.

Born in 1728, French aristocrat Charles d'Eon de Beaumont had served his country as a diplomat, soldier, and spy for fifteen years when rumors that he was a woman began to circulate in the courts of Europe. D'Eon denied nothing and was finally compelled by Louis XVI to give up male attire and live as a woman, something d'Eon did without complaint for the next three decades. Although celebrated as one of the century's most remarkable women, d'Eon was revealed, after his death in 1810, to have been unambiguously male. Gary Kates's acclaimed biography of d'Eon recreates eighteenth-century European society in brilliant detail and offers a compelling portrait of an individual who challenged its conventions about gender and identity.

                              4 out of 5 stars A bit mixed up-but good nevertheless.......2001-05-14

At first this book was intresting, but it soon got confusing. One page he was flirting with Ben Franklin(as Chevaliere d'Eon,of course),the next page he was crying in his room to Madamoiselle Bertin. After he 'became' a woman, the book concentrated on the books in his library(Extremly boring). All in all,it's good, because it helped me realize that d'Eon wasn't this crazy politian, but he was 'pretending' so that he would get a second chance. But I still think it was a stupid move, but at least he'll be remembered for it.

                              4 out of 5 stars a multifaceted book.......1999-12-12

D'eon was more interesting than I'd ever realized. It appears that she adopted womanhood out of faith and feminism as much as personal needs, yet her motives remain mixed and mysterious. This book does a good job of showing her own complexity and that of her era.

I teach graduate courses in Project Management and therefore have seen many textbooks which are interesting, useful and informative. However, the one area where Mr. Callahan's book excels is exactly the one where most textbooks are lacking: a bird's eye view of the key issues in project management providing a better understanding of why one should not only be concerned about it but also how to understand it better. I would heartily recommend this book not only as a secondary book in Project Management classes, but also -- and particularly -- for those people in organizations who find themselves in need of getting a quick grasp of important issues in project management and how to sell such need to higher management. The examples provided are compelling and really do make a point.

As an executive in a company that was struggling to get the right projects identified and the to manage them effectively, this is one of the first books I turned to as a resource. I am pleased that I did.

Mr. Callahan's book is clearly written, easy to understand and provides a good blend of high level overview along with down to earth practical guidance. He does an excellent job showing why projects fail to meet expectations and provides a roadmap of what an organization needs to do, at every level and in all functions, to improve their success in Project Management.

After reading this book, I distributed copies to others in the organization from the CEO down to the engineers working on individual project activities. I believe Mr. Callahan's book provided an excellent means of communicating to the organization an understanding of what we as a company needed to do differently and why.

This book is filled with helpful information on making sure all the facets of project management are understood and considered. Particularly useful are the "tips and techniques" sections in the book, which offer extremely useful questions for consideration. Further, the STO model the book is based on is solid. The authors also have some interesting and fresh points to make about risk. Finally, one of my favorite parts of the book, was the reference to how 'Fractals' are like companies and vice versa - very innovative and adept point to include. To find out more, read the book!
