        Book Description

The Six Sigma Book for Healthcare: Improving Outcomes by Reducing Errors demystifies the increasingly popular Six Sigma approach to improving quality. This book provides a clear explanation of what Six Sigma is, how it works, and how it can be applied to healthcare management.

The book also provides valuable guidance and tools that will help you implement the Six Sigma method at your organization. You and your staff can work through cases that illustrate the method. A companion web site provides additional teaching and learning tools, including lists of data for working through the cases, sample spreadsheets showing additional detail about the examples used in the book, and tools for presenting results in a PowerPoint format appropriate for a management team meeting.

4 out of 5 stars Great for people unfamiliar with Six Sigma.......2005-03-18

I am a graduate student learning how to become a healthcare administrator. I think this book is a great tool to explain Six Sigma concepts to people who have no experience with Six Sigma. I look forward to reading Barry's new book in mid-2005. The only complaint that I have about the book is that it is a bit disorganized.

1 out of 5 stars A "below the basics" Six Sigma text.......2004-01-29

While I do not want to sound offensive to the authors, I was almost offended at the simplistic level of Six Sigma description that was used in this book. You can skip the first two chapters completely and browse the rest of the text. The case studies are applicable and actually fairly good. The authors almost make it seem as though anything being done is already at a Six Sigma level, you simply need to make the numbers match. There is no real tie to making Six Sigma work in healthcare in this book. Having done a great deal of reading and research on Six Sigma, I would recommend that anyone wanting to utilize this great technique in a healthcare setting stick with Six Sigma books geared for traditional business and use them to apply principles to healthcare. In my opinion, this book was approximately $65 over-priced. Thanks to the authors, however, on a valiant effort.

        1 out of 5 stars Misleading Title.......2002-11-27

As a stand-alone reference this book offers very little to anyone looking to implement a six sigma program in healthcare. The book fails to address the organizational and strategic issues related to implementing a comprehensive process improvement strategy in any type of organization, let alone a healthcare organization. The book would have us believe that six sigma is the application of statistical problem solving techniques to traditional quality improvement programs. If it were that simple, many healthcare organizations have been practicing six sigma for over 15 years. Someone in healthcare looking to find out what six sigma is all about would likely be left with the impression that six sigma is just the latest buzzword. On the other hand, the book does provide some nice case studies that may be useful for a non-statistician looking to strengthen their process improvement tool belt. Either the authors don't really understand what six sigma is all about or they are just attempting to exploit the market by combining the words six sigma and healthcare in the title. Most healthcare professional would do better to look at the GE related references on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Six Sigma Strategy Text!.......2002-11-27

I expected the book to address the organizational and strategic issues related to implementing Six Sigma in a healthcare organization. Instead, the book has some nice case studies on applying statistical analysis to process problems and a general discussion of quality systems. This isn't the book for someone looking to implement a process improvement program but may be a useful reference for non-statisticians looking to strengthen their statistical toolkit.

          Book Description

Products ranging from Fifth Generation computers and sophisticated robotics to inexpensive, superfast wireless communications and smart cars will become widespread by the 21st century. At the same time, now unimagined new technologies will also appear. Automation, covering all areas of work and all walks of life, will drastically shift employment patterns, while unattended factories and expert systems will pose novel challenges for managers. What can businesses do to prepare for such a fast-changing and volatile future? What strategies should they follow to keep up with technological and other breakthroughs as they unfold? What type of skills do they need to cultivate within their organizations? What steps and actions should managers take now to improve their chances of survival and their ability to succeed in the future? How can they effectively compete in a global village?

Now, Spyros Makridakis, the pioneer whose name is synonymous with forecasting, addresses these complex questions. Drawing on twenty-five years of research, teaching, and corporate consulting, Makridakis contends that a thorough knowledge of the principles of forecasting and decision making, coupled with a basic understanding of how and why past mistakes were made, has a pronounced and positive impact on future-oriented decisions, notably planning and strategy. Moving beyond his earlier work, and building on his unique knowledge of the methods of forecasting and their real-life applications in companies throughout the world, Makridakis presents a brilliant, non-technical reassessment of forecasting, planning, and strategy that will be welcomed by every manager who has ever struggled with a budget or a long-range plan.

After presenting the myths and realities of forecasting and explaining what can and cannot be successfully planned for, Makridakis offers a complete analysis of the factors that influence short, medium, and long-term planning. He does so by comparing and contrasting economic long-term cycles to shorter-term trends and emphasizing the necessity of distinguishing temporary cyclical movements from those indicating changes in trends. He also presents various analytical planning models and discusses their use and limitations in real-life situations.

Finally, Makridakis probes the relationship of competitive and non-competitive strategies to forecasting and discusses the factors that during the past contributed to achieving success or avoiding failure. He explores, by examining past patterns in human history, the type of businesses and managers most likely to emerge in the coming century and shows how managers can employ creativity as their major strategic tool.

Practical and straightforward, this book is must reading for the managers of today who want to better understand forthcoming changes and their implications, and who wish to successfully lead their companies into the world of tomorrow.

I first read this book in 1990 and just recently did a re-read. I am buying it as a gift even now in 2000. A real thinker who has the intellectual chops to write this type of book - not a blow hard know it all like so many business experts. On the same level with, or very close to, Drucker, but perhaps more practical.

              Book Description

This book examines the evolution of French defense policy since the end of the Cold War through an analysis of the debates in France between 1989 and 1994 about the changing international security context and risks and opportunities for France. It analyzes the effect of the Chirac Presidency [1995 -] on the implementation and direction of the reform of defense policy. The second half of the book assesses the key themes identified by the 1994 Livre Blanc sur la Deacute;fense and the 1996 Loi de Programmation [1997-2002] and examines the implications for the role of France in international security into the 21st century.

                Book Description

Since the buildup of U.S. armed forces peaked under Reagan in 1987, many changes have occurred in all four services, including reductions in both human and material resources. This study traces these trends and details the government's vision of how the military will look in the year 2015. Changes in the global security environment and pressure to decrease federal spending have resulted in force restructuring, eliminating major units, and displacing military and civilian personnel. Other consequences include base closures and reduced major weapon system inventories. Brasher discusses the implications of these new policies and assesses their current and future impact on American defense capabilities. The media has focussed considerable attention on the downsizing of U.S. forces. It predicted that base closures would have catastrophic effects on local communities, and it warned that women and minorities would see fewer opportunities for advancement within the military. Brasher chronicles the effects of base closures on many communities and determines that original fears were exaggerated. Women and minorities have also fared better than initially anticipated. In fact, especially in terms of relative combat power, the new military is even stronger than it was in 1987.

                              Book Description

This unique volume provides a comprehensive survey of the major economic issues that have helped shape the modern world. It includes discussions of the latest research findings in macroeconomics and scrutinizes some of the most important debates in economic history. The author examines the many controversies relating to the role of government in a modern economy, long-run growth and development, the spread of the Industrial Revolution, the causes and consequences of the `Great Depression', the `Great Peacetime Inflation', the conduct of stabilization policy, international economic integration and globalization.

To shed light on these major issues the volume contains interviews with ten leading economists who have each contributed extensively to the literature on macroeconomics, economic growth and development, international economics and economic history. A major theme which runs throughout the book is the conviction that economists can gain valuable insights concerning important contemporary policy issues from a knowledge of history, especially economic history.

The distinguished economists featured in this book are: Ben Bernanke, Jagdish Bhagwati, Alan Blinder, Nick Crafts, Bradford DeLong, Barry Eichengreen, Kevin Hoover, Charles Jones, Christina Romer and Joseph Stiglitz.

Containing an extensive and up-to-date list of references, the book provides a comprehensive guide to the modern literature on macroeconomics and related fields. It will be an essential reference for all scholars and students of economics, especially those with an interest in economic growth, business cycles, inflation, unemployment, trade and globalization. It will also be of considerable value to students of economic history and the history of economic thought.

                                  Book Description

"New Lad culture" boomed in the 1990s with the publication of men's magazines such as loaded, FHM and Maxim. What were the commercial roots of this boom and what did it say about contemporary masculinity and the dynamics of cultural production?Applying a cultural-economic approach and drawing on interviews with key figures at the sector's leading products, Crewe unwraps the means through which publishing companies comprehended and addressed the men's magazine audience in the 1990s. He argues that it was informal knowledge about cultures of masculinity held by editorial practitioners that was decisive in constituting individual magazines and the overall character of the sector. In exploring the cultural resources, identifications and ambitions around which the market crystallized, Crewe provides an in-depth comparison of the editors and editorial identity of loaded, the pioneer of the 'mass market', with those of Esquire and Arena, magazines associated with the sector's initial reformation. Clear and comprehensive, this work sheds new light on the commercial assessment and representation of modern masculine culture.

                                            Book Description

We live in an age of increasing doubt about whether our institutions and technologies can provide security against risks, many of which they themselves have created. Uncertain Business is an unprecedented inquiry into insurance industry practices and what they tell us about risks and uncertainties in contemporary society.

The core of the book is ethnographic studies in distinct fields of insurance: premature death, disability, earthquake, and terrorism. These studies reveal that uncertainty pervades different fields of insurance, the very industry that is charged with transforming uncertainty into manageable risk. Scientific data on risk are variously absent, inadequate, controversial, contradictory, and ignored. Insurers impose meaning on uncertainty through non-scientific forms of knowledge that are intuitive, emotional, aesthetic, moral, and speculative. Nevertheless, the nature of uncertainty and the response to it varies substantially across the fields studied, showing how contemporary society is characterized by competing risk logics.

Insurers' perceptions and decisions about uncertainty - with potential for windfall profits as well as catastrophic losses - create crises in insurance availability and provoke new forms of inequality and exclusion. Hence, while the insurance industry is a central bulwark against uncertainty, insurers also play a key role in fostering it.
