    Book Description

Outside anthropology, this is the first book on field studies within the social sciences. The authors offer methods, based on the experienced fact that social science research cannot be described as a rational process. This book presents the rational features of this seemingly irrational process. The authors have systematized their own extensive experience with field studies, providing advice to future researchers on how to avoid the most mundane and traditional mistakes. The first part of the book describes four real life research stories that are well structured, well written, and simply exciting. The second part is a systematic effort to draw methodological conclusions from the stories. The result is an analytical presentation of the common mode of behaviour observed in the previous stories.

    Book Description

In this timely book, Weigel presents an innovative and effective framework for e-learning in higher education that can be woven into the fabric of classroom-based education to better cultivate connection and collaboration between students and educators. Written for presidents, deans, trustees, faculty, and distance education providers, this book outlines a dynamic new approach to distance learning and shows that the ability to manage knowledge, rather than just accumulate it, should be the chief priority of higher education in a technological world. The author decries the use of distance education to simply expand enrollments and demonstrates how effective education can connect knowledge across fields and age levels rather than segmenting it. He also shows how the rich resources of the Internet can be plumbed creatively to add depth and meaning to the college curriculum and to immerse learners, whether in the classroom or at a distance, in a continuum of knowledge and experience.

    1 out of 5 stars Just a sales pitch.......2004-04-22

I had to review this book as part of a post-graduate study. The book is highly disappointing and is little more than a sales pitch for Weigel's so called "Knowledge Rooms". The book also goes into great detail on IBM/Lotus's "Quickpace". Weigel fawns over this product and I expect that he will get a box of chocs from the sales & marketing guys at IBM. Weigel also has a habit of telling irrelevant anecdotes and the book as a whole is ill-structured.

My advice? Build your own room and write a book about it.

5 out of 5 stars Van is the MAN!!!!.......2004-04-18

Van B. Weigel has done it again!!! This book is incredeible!!! My method of teaching will never be the same. I recomend this book to anyone, even if you are not a professor. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED!!!

1 out of 5 stars Deep Learning for a Digital Age.......2003-10-17

I found this book disappointing and not helpful. I work as an instructional designer and saw no information of use to me - just lots of speculation. Chapter 3 ended up as an 'infomercial' for a software program named "quickplace". I cannot recommned this book at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Educators and Administrators.......2003-06-23

This book represents a modern view of technology. The author describes how to use technology to enhance learning. He gives practical advice to help educators and administrations set realistic goals. Too often, technology is implemented as an addition to educational goals rather than in support of these goals. Weigel examines different educational technologies and highlights factors that you should consider before implementation.

5 out of 5 stars Focus on quality, not revenue potential, of online learning........2003-01-30

This book emphasizes one of the most important issues confronting colleges and universities as they plan for online learning: the quality of the experience for the learner. Positing that an increasingly robust contemporary infrastructure (human and technical) can deepen learning and teaching beyond what's possible, even in many face-to-face environments, Weigel rightfully cautions higher education to keep its eye on the real prize -- educational depth and richness -- rather than the false and conflicting fantasy of commercial windfall. Eloquently written and soundly argued, this volume is a sensible guide for educators, administrators and policy-makers in dealing with the confused new world of electronically networked learning.

              Book Description

This book deals with the frameworks between customers and suppliers. These frameworks link a customer's own value creating activities to the competencies and resources of the supplying firm(s). Both the short term (financial) and long term (knowledge) benefits to using this approach are discussed.

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars ýPRIME MOVERSý.......2001-05-16

`PRIME MOVERS' Define Your Business or Have Someone Define it Against You

How did Nokia come to lead in mobile phones? How did Tetra Pak revolutionise milk packaging? How did VISA become so central in payments? How did Caterpillar become `the' reference in Earth-moving equipment? How did photocopying come to be called Xeroxing?

This book tells the story of companies that have revolutionised their markets, some more than once, by completely changing the logic of value creation in them. Such companies are called `prime movers'. The book explains this logic and provides detailed frameworks for implementing it.

The New Logic of Value Creation

The main thesis of the book, and the value creation framework it proposes, is that the role of a business is to identify, utilise and package its capabilities into offerings that help customers create value for themselves and their customers and counterparts.

This framework is fundamentally different from one that considers products (instead of capabilities) and markets (instead of customers). It captures not only the value of an offering to customers, but the whole value chain, including customers' customers. The overall network, in which value is created both with customers and their customers, is called a `value constellation'.

An example shows how this was implemented by Xerox Corporation, which converted xerography into a commercial success. Later, competitors entered the market with smaller and cheaper machines. Xerox reconfigured the market a second time with its `document processing' strategy.

              An Architecture for Value Creation

The authors provide a framework for understanding the various value logics in the value chain and resulting value constellation. They show how to define a business model which should answer the question: what value do we want to create, and for and with whom? This comprises the capabilities to be deployed, the co-production partners to be involved, the offerings to be co-produced, and the customers to be targeted.

Different routes can be taken to create value:

              * A firm aligns its value-creating logics to those of its customers.

              * A company harnesses its existing capabilities to create new offerings for existing and new customers.

              * A company develops and utilises new capabilities to create new offerings and attract new customers.

The book rests on the premise that value is customer-dependent. For example, a shirt may be bought by several different types of people. One may view it entirely as a piece of clothing, its value being based on its price relative to its quality. Another may be interested in minimising the time taken to acquire the shirt, and therefore buy it from a mail order catalogue or the internet. A third may be looking for something that will become an integral part of her wardrobe. A fourth could be a fashion student, who buys it to learn about design. Or the purchaser could be an environmentalist, concerned about the origin of the material, the environmental impact of the production process, and whether it can be recycled. Each of these customers has a different view of the value of the shirt, which needs to be taken into account when creating the offering presented to them.

              Some Comparisons

`Prime Movers' has a common theme with `Leading the Revolution' by Gary Hamel. However, it differs markedly in presentation and content. Both argue that to succeed, a business has to reinvent itself, often more than once. But whereas Hamel's revolution relates mainly to changing the organisation, Ramírez and Wallin's revolution is in rethinking the business.

It also has much in common with `The Profit Zone' (Slywotsky and Morrison, John Wiley, 1998), in that both books focus on what customers value. However, whereas Slywotsky and Morrison look principally at the customer's point of view, Ramírez and Wallin also consider the firm's capabilities and its customers' customers.

This is not an airport bookshop best-seller, with a single idea and which can be read in a few hours. It is thoroughly researched, with notes and references on each chapter. It is very rich in ideas which demand careful attention, and its layout enables it to be read a chapter at a time. For a summary of these ideas, one can do no better than quote one of the concluding paragraphs. "Offerings reverse the ground of attention to which strategists have given priority. Instead of actors, interactions should be considered as the focus. Instead of companies, it is relationships. Instead of positioning within a given context, it is the enlarging and redefining environments which can deliver more effective companies, helping their customers to become more effective creators, ultimately making up better value constellations."

                Book Description

The manufacture of luxury textiles, such as silk, was central to an Italian Renaissance economy based on status and conspicuous consumption. From the rapidly changing fashions that drove demand to the jobs created for craftsmen, weavers, and merchants, the wealth and prestige associated with silk throughout Europe made it Italy's leading export industry. In this important book, Luca Molà examines the silk industry in Renaissance Venice amid changing markets, suppliers, producers, and government regulations.

Drawing on archival research and a vast amount of European scholarship, Molà documents the innovations Venetians made in manufacturing and marketing to spur the silk industry. He uncovers the alliance between manufacturers and government to promote the industry in a changing international economic environment. Through flexible laws, quality was regulated to meet the varying requirements of an increasing range of customers. Molà also analyzes state policy that favored the development and organization of silk producers throughout the Terraferma. His findings contribute in an important way to the ongoing scholarly assessment of Venice's place in the economy of the Renaissance and the Mediterranean world.

                      Book Description

A proven, six-step process for creating and capturing demand in today's networked economy

Demand Driven proves that it's not enough for organizations to market their products directly to the customer. Instead, it explains how organizations can create an "ecosystem of demand" for their products and services by using technology to partner with suppliers, customers, resellers, and competitors. These partnerships create indirect demand for the original product or service, resulting in higher overall sales. Demand Driven takes the concept of partnership marketing a step further by showing how a company can use technology to shape a common customer experience with its products, regardless of whether a customer is talking on the phone to a reseller, visiting its website, or purchasing support services from one of the company's marketing partners. Demand Driven moves beyond simplistic CRM and E-business "bandages" and offers digital and Internet solutions to both create and capture demand and dramatically increase revenue and market share in today's networked economy.

                          Book Description

There is a tide of competitiveness rising across the sea of business. The issues being faced by the business commanders of today are rapidly becoming more complex. Veritable waves of information are crashing down on organizational decision makers. While the environment is becoming more complex, it is getting tougher to discern the relevant information from among the flood of available data. The demand for accurate, rapid decision making is impelling today's decision makers to wonder about the existence of some sort of job-preserving assistance. These decision makers are often awash in political controversy as well as technical, economic, social, and legal considerations. Relief from this sea of troubles may come from a behaviorally-responsive decision support system (DSS) in the form of computer assistance that considers the decision maker's cognitive and emotional needs. This book describes a DSS that will meet the needs of modern organization decision makers.

                            Book Description

Decision making in environmental projects is typically a complex and confusing process characterized by trade-offs between socio-political, environmental, and economic impacts. Comparative Risk Assessment (CRA) is a methodology applied to facilitate decision making when various activities compete for limited resources. CRA has become an increasingly accepted research tool and has helped to characterize environmental profiles and priorities on the regional and national level. CRA may be considered as part of the more general but as yet quite academic field of multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). Considerable research in the area of MCDA has made available methods for applying scientific decision theoretical approaches to multi-criteria problems, but its applications, especially in environmental areas, are still limited. The papers show that the use of comparative risk assessment can provide the scientific basis for environmentally sound and cost-efficient policies, strategies, and solutions to our environmental challenges.

                                Book Description

Human experience has shown how great cities, nations, and empires have either collapsed or retired from their predominant stature when natural resources are depleted to an extent that exceeds the ability of the environment to restore or replenish their supply. This book explores the challenges facing coastal areas during the next few decades and the difficult decisions needed to prevent a repeat of the past. Establishing, maintaining or enhancing a sense of environmental security in different coastal regions and improving the management of critical infrastructure will require (i) matching human demands with available environmental resources; (ii) recognition of environmental security threats and infrastructure vulnerabilities; and, (iii) identification of the range of available options for preventing and/or minimizing natural disasters, technological failures, and/or terror actions. This book emphasizes beliefs that the convergence of seemingly disparate viewpoints and often uncertain and limited information is possible only by using one or more available risk assessment methodologies and decision-making tools such as multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA).
