    The Objective of Empowering Teachers is to clearly explain what successful principals do to empower teachers, ultimately improving learning. The book is based on data collected from 285 teachers in 11 schools that participated in a study associated with Carl Glickman's League of Professional Schools. The authors have based their book on shared governance, which they suggest is the foundation necessary for empowerment to occur. Therefore Blasé & Blasé wrote about common strategies and practices of successful principals who implemented shared governance. Only those principals described as successful were studied; success was measured based on League Criteria, annual reports, on site visitations, teacher reports and facilitator reports. The book, Empowering Teachers, is broken into ten easy to read chapters: 1) Shared Governance 2) Trusting the Experts: Why do we need trust 3) Creating Structures that help Teachers do Their Best 4) Supportive Resources 5) Encouraging Autonomy and Innovation 6) Modeling Personal Dimensions 7) About Risk and Threat 8) Valuing and Rewarding Good Work 9) Helping Solve Problems 10) Providing Leadership That is Facilitative and Democratic Each chapter describes a strategy, discusses its importance, and provides a break down of specific practices that are effective in implementing the strategy. The Mechanics of Optimism fills a void by documenting, in rare detail, the boom-bust cycle of Hot Spring District, a mid-1860s Montana gold camp that didn't pay, despite early predictions of a bonanza.

                    Author and historian Jeffrey J. Safford examines how gold mining ventures were developed and financed during and after the Civil War, and how men, primarily Easterners with scant knowledge of mining, were willing to invest large sums in gold mines that promised quick and lucrative returns.

                    Safford explains how these mining companies were organized and underwritten, and why a little-known district in southwestern Montana was chosen as a center of operations. What were the businessmen involved in these ventures thinking? Why didn't new mining technology triumph as predicted? Why did their financial strategies fail to produce lavish profits? Relying on extensive primary sources, Safford answers these and other questions while reminding the reader that the rapid rise and decline of Hot Spring was not unique.                       The 24 Sales Traps and How to Avoid Them will appeal to both sales managers and reps searching for a fresh infusion of real-life advice on how to achieve better sales.

                      The number is essentially unimportant. Canada could have focused on seven (out of respect to Covey) or on 14 or on 34 "sales traps." In fact, there are hundreds of incorrect or inappropriate actions and strategies undertaken by salespeople or a sales organization because of incomplete or false information, illogical thinking, "tradition," poor decision-making, and/or not knowing what they don't know. Canada brought to the writing of this book a wealth of real-world experience in sales and sales training. He also drew upon extensive published research (e.g. a sales research project sponsored by Xerox) as well as studies conducted by the Dartmouth Group, Ltd. and the Institute for Global Sales Studies. In the Introduction, Canada asserts that "It is not what sales and marketing people don't know that is most likely to significantly hurt their performance; it is what they think they know that turns out to be a partial truth, a fallacy, or a mistaken belief that affects their results more."

                      According to Canada, the most successful salespeople, sales teams, and sales organizations are guided and informed by six principles: Focus outside, get the most out of the best people, train effectively, create value, offer feedback and create opportunities for learning, and use the Internet and databases effectively. He illustrates each of these six by identifying and then examining 24 different sales traps, each of which violates one or more of the principles. He then explains how to avoid them. For example:

                      Sales Trap #6: Either Sales People Have It or They Don't

                      Action Points: Be patient, Give constructive feedback, and give consistent feedback that doesn't exclude anyone.

                      Sales Truth #6: Sales people are developed [in italics], not born [also in italics]

                      Canada uses this same format for the other sales traps, devoting a separate chapter to each of the 24. He provides brief annotations with each Action Point throughout the book and also inserts observations, suggestions, and examples so as to create a context for each combination of Sales Trap/Action Points/Sales Truth. He concludes with an Epilogue in which he shares his thoughts about the next generation of performance change programs, suggesting that there are two unique points that should be carefully considered when devising a program by which to move sales performance and sales results to the next level. First, performance change programs must incorporate a customer survey that is customized for the program, and performance change programs should also examine the success factors from the customer's perspective." Although Canada does not italicize the last four words, I would. "Second, the program must incorporate into each case study the 'best practices' of your top salespeople. In other words, we must leverage the insights of an organization's best people in order to help others within the company." I could not agree more, presuming to add that the aforementioned "best practices" would also be of substantial to those not directly involved in sales (e.g. receptionists, telephone operators, CSRs, accounting) who also have direct and frequent contact with customers.

                      After reviewing the 24, many readers will probably have a few sales traps to add to the list. Perhaps if enough readers share them with Canada (he is a member of the marketing faculty at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University), he will accumulate enough new material for another book. My own rather extensive experience in sales and sales training suggests these troublemakers:

                      MISTAKE A: Negotiating Against Yourself (i.e. assuming what a customer can and cannot afford)

                      TRUTH A: Let the customer say "No."

                      MISTAKE B: Constantly "Cultivate" Customers

                      TRUTH B: Contact a customer only when there is a legitimate reason to do so.

                      MISTAKE C: Ask Lots of Questions

                      TRUTH C: Do your homework. Lots of it. Request only the answers you cannot be expected to know already.

                      MISTAKE D: Closing Skills Are Most Important

                      TRUTH D: More often than not, so-called "closing skills" work best when used to pre-qualify a prospect.

                      Although this book will be of great value to relatively inexperienced salespeople, especially to those without the safety nets and air cover of an established sales organization, I also think it will be of substantial value to sales managers and to peak performers who can so easily become entrapped by what Jim O'Toole refers to as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." Probably the worst sales trap of all is to continue to think and sell the same way, day after day, and then expect better results. Even the most experienced of salespeople should constantly be challenging their own assumptions, premises, etc. about sales...but seldom do. Canada's book can guide and inform such a re-evaluation.

                      Especially for organizations with limited resources and a small sales force, Canada's book can serve as the basis of an especially effective sales training program. Larger organizations can also use it as the focal point of a workshop. Obviously, those who understand what the 24 sales traps are and why they are so dangerous are most likely to avoid them.

                      Finally, someone uses more research-based information than personal opinion to discuss the field of sales. This book was extremely helpful and the author hit a home run. Hope there is a second book like the first.

                      This is a fantastic book. It is so hard to find any books in the sales or marketing field that are actually based on facts versus opinions. If you like this book you should check out books by Neil Rackham.

                        "The Ravenscar Dynasty" is the first book in a saga about two families, the Deravenels and the Grants, and the struggle for power of the house of Deravenel. The story takes place in Edwardian England and starts in 1904. Loosely based upon the life of King Edward IV, but with obvious flaws, I don't applaud this idea.

                        Most of what happens is, however, not entirely unexpected. Convenient "co-incidencies" easily guessed by the reader, destroy any hope of possible page-turning quality. When, for thirty pages or so, none of the book's characters have a clue about what the reader already knows, it's easy to just skip those pages.

                        "The Ravenscar Dynasty" is still not totally unenjoyable. I suppose the setting, English upper class in the old days, with their grand homes and traditions, has its attraction, a special "glamour of lost times". Not much excitement, but a certain charm. It did not keep me awake at night. Neither am I eagerly awaiting Book II. Compared with the unforgettable "A Woman of Substance", it lacks a lot. Too much is predictable. The people are settled in their world, in spite of a bit of trouble to maintain it. There is nothing of the strength and magic of the story about a young woman from Leeds who single-handedly built an empire. Emma Harte crept into my heart and her story is one of those unforgettable moments in literature.

                        I'll follow the Deravenel's destiny further, but next time I'll wait till the paperback.

                        urgh.. couldn't stand this one. How many times can the author tell us that the main character is good looking and likes older women?? How many times can she explain the family and its history? Boring.

                        The book started out slow but then got much more interesting. Love Barbara Taylor Bradford, she does weave a great story. Ordered "the heir" which is the second book of the trilogy!!!

                        I so looked forward to reading this book because I truly enjoyed a "Woman of Substance" and others by this author. Sadly I found it to be tiring with its overstated descriptions of wealth, opulence, gratuitous sex, and pretentious dialogue. Getting to the actual plot came about three fifths of the way through and was so shallow, I felt robbed. New characters were still being introduced in the last 100 pages, almost as though the author herself was getting bored with where it was going.

                        Marissa Monteilh wrote an excllent novel titled "Hot Boyz". She took 3 extremly sexy and wealthy black men and wrote about their lives. The women in their lives, the children and their jobs. You saw the love of family in the story. It was an awesome story that encourages you to move on each and every day. It teaches you to let go when somebody doesn't want to be with you. A great story indeed! Check it out!

                        The characters in this book seemed believable. I felt sorry for them at times and laughed hysterically with them at others. The brothers in this book had it going on...the type of men any woman would love to be with. Even still, no one is perfect and this family is riddled with problems. Marissa Monteilh brought the drama in this book. It did not disappoint.

                        I found this one on the discount shelf of my favorite book store. I was expecting something alot more fiery based on the title. What I got was a long and drawn out story about a family who has to pick up and move on when a tragedy occurs in the home of one of the brothers. I never really got into this story. It certainly wasn't a page turner, but it was well written and the story made sense. I did appreciate the fact that the story explores several relationships (brother to brother, husband and wife, mother to children), although the relationship between Mason and Mercedes did not end as I anticipated. I'd pick this one up from the library.

                        This book was the best. Hot Boyz gives every emotion that could possibly be envoked by one single human being. You will want to cry, laugh, scream, and holla! The characters are so real and every person can relate to something in this storyline. Not many authors have the ability to entertain and give a message all at the same time. Hot Boyz does just that!

                        I really enjoyed this book. The Wilson brothers are off the hook. Claudes behavior was a definite no no, how could he marry his dead lovers girlfriend? Just nasty, but that kept me more intrigued. If you love scandal and drama this is the book for you. ENJOY...

                        After two years of marriage, Whitney Blake Andrews is convinced her husband Chase is perfect. She still lives in a romantic daze, and life couldn't be better. Sure there are times she'd like to ship Mitzi, her assistant, to another planet, but other than that she has no complaints. Mitzi has a talent for geting on Whitney's nerves, and can turn a compliment into an insult and never even notice. It's all about Mitzi.

                        Whitney's best friend, Kim Easton, has survived breast cancer, and is eager to have a baby, but her doctor, and her husband are afraid with her medical history, a pregnancy will enhance her risks of the cancer returning. Then Mitzi announces she's trying to get pregnant, and Whitney feels a yearning for the patter of little feet.

                        The Baby Chronicles is a really fun book. Judy Baer knows how to spin a yarn that will keep her readers smiling. Warm, witty, with a wacky cast of characters, who get their exercise leaping from one mess to another, The Baby Chronicles is just as entertaining as The Whitney Chronicles. I hope there's a book three in this delightful series.

                        When she turned thirty Whitney Black assumed she would never marry as she vowed to never settle for anyone except her soul mate. When she kept running into her best friend Kim's Doctor, Chase Andrews, she realized he was her destiny. He swept her off her feet and they married (see THE WHITNEY CHRONICLES).

                        Whitney, Kim, and their other best bud Mitzi discuss how neat it would be if the three were pregnant at the same time so that their children could become best friends like them. However, the road to babyhood proves more complex than the three decades path to marriage. As Whitney chronicles her adventures in pregnancy driving the patient Chase crazy, she shares her turmoil her pregnant pals, who drive their spouses insane too.

                        Whitney's latest adventures, this time in pregnancy mode, are entertaining and spiritually uplifting as she struggles with her delicate condition, but thanks God (and Chase) for her happy life. The story line starts a bit slow as the audience is reintroduced to the dynamic trio and their husbands, but once Whitney's journal begins to discuss her pregnancy and its raging hormones, THE BABY CHRONICLES turn into a fascinating read. Fans will appreciate this fine look at the bare essentials of creating a life.
