To review this book is to look at the competition, which is very thin. This reference does an admirable job filling a very large hole in the market. There is of course endless room for growth (one could no doubt write a book entirely dedicated to negotiation in Kazakhstan), but the book does not endeavor to do that, whether by region, country, or industry. Instead, it is a good shelf reference for any business person about to undertake international negotiations.

I read this book before traveling abroad and found many handy facts to help me in daily social situations. This book gives information on both business and social settings which I also found extremely helpful. Make sure to have a recent edition as country facts and norms seem to be constantly evolving. Why only 3 stars?. Ok. Maybe is 4 and a half if you are an american citizen. The reason is beacause many of the information is recopiled from other sources. You can divide the book in 3 sections. One is like extract of an administrative course, like an MBA or something similar. The other are more a "common sense" recomendations, like "don't argue too much", "do not fight with your partner". Like mom's suggestions. And the last one (more than a half of the book) is like an adaptative version of the CIA factbook (avaible on Internet, and of course, up to date), where the author describes for each country a general overview of it, but never profundize on their culture or what about the relation with other country; only with the americans. Let me show you some examples: With my country (México) he suggest not to talk about or borders or the inmmigrants, but never talks about the religion, the political relation with other countries. There is no need to say that the author never talks about the culture, what kind of thinks hates or loves people form different cultures, how and why they act in some ways; he is like saying that japanese or the turkish are almost the same, only they likes somethings and dislikes other ones. He only talks like saying all the time: "(if you are an american)... do not argue with japanese about the relation with USA in the WWII". Welll.. What if I am not american?

At last, is good "general overview" reference book; but basically most usefull if you are an american citizen (and is not complete).

After reading this book, I am better able to discuss meaningful topics with members of other cultures. Now, instead of focusing primarily on American cultural views, I can shift the conversation to include many points of view (most important, the listener's)! I recently used the information I obtained from reading Acuff's book during a conversation with a woman from Nigeria. She was so surprised when I asked her if Americans made the mistake of calling her normal clothing, a costume. I was able to empathize with her and to discuss her frustration regarding that particular issue. We now talk every week! I highly recommend this book for both personal and professional growth. The author is down-to-earth and his real-life accounts are interesting and fun to read!

This book is really the best place to find out what GAAP is today. It's perfect for CFO's, Controllers, Accountants and students of accounting. It provides a lot of excellent examples to help you understand how to apply GAAP within your own company. Everyone else may find it a little dry.

This book is a great resource for creating accounting policies for your organization but it won't help you with procedures. There are a lot of other good books for developing procedures and this is not one of them.

It's a great reference text for everything you wanted to know about GAAP, financial statements and accounting. If you need to know what GAAP is, then buy this book.

For accountants: You MUST have this book! I'm an accountant and this along with a dictionary of accounting terms are among my most essential books to have on my work shelf! It's a great reference and ALSO a great learning tool for topics that you're not fully knowledgeable in!

For non-accountants: This book migh be a little too technical for your needs! Unless you'll be deeply involved in accounting issues, you might want to look for another more basic book. Nevertheless, you can always make use of this book if you have one!

After years of reading about the importance of being true to yourself and the link to happiness, I came across this book and (Values at Work by same author). The book is designed to help you discover your personal values and apply them to your life. What I liked about it, was it didn't expend energy trying to convince me on the importance of living values through other people's examples. It gives you a framework and some practical exercises to help you discover your own.

"Art" of Systems Thinking was an illuminating book about the abstract concept of systems, and applying it to different practical instances. Overall it was interesting, but I expected it to be more mathematical and rigorous, instead of being more psychology based.

poorly designed book: not adequate for its' subject.......2004-01-24

It's hard to know what to say. There wasn't enough juice to this book that it kept my interest. The writing style is dull and pedantic, the examples are trivial, the illustrations useless. There is something fundamentally wrong with this entire genre of *thinking skills* books. The authors usually show little ability to relate complex, real world problem solving to higher models or theories. It appears that there are two classes of writer: those with much practical experience and good war stories who rely on instinct and intuition, and those who read like they have been up in their ivory towers and do nothing but trade academic papers back and forth. For some reason the two never meet so we are forced to choose between guys who don't know how to translate the thought processes behind their actions into words OR guys who have no idea of how they could bridge their concepts into profitable, concrete action. This book, regrettably, falls squarely into the second category of think-a-mush. Completely uninspiring. Typical of books that are forced on unfortunate college students. Save your money for something better, whatever that might be.

Great Introduction to system thinking - but read the title.......2004-01-14

I think the title of the book sums it up.
For the word Art: read ART. Expect broad brush stokes about concepts, lots of story telling. Ideas, big picture stuff. Great framework for stimulating thought, getting a feel for the ideas and going on to explore them. You may be disappointed if you expect rigorous maths or science or much detail about the mechanics of system dynamics.
Essential skills - expect broad real life applications for the ideas, lots of questions to challenge and update your mental models Maybe don't expect to be able to map the ecosystem in your front garden or solve world hunger (yet)
Creativity and Problem solving - the emphasis here is on applying systems thinking as a skill. The tone is very much 'thinking about thinking'. That is 'what mental model do I hold about thinking'. How does the model of reality I am creating in my head effect the system. Does the reality create my thinking or my thinking create reality (or is this a loop?)
If all of this system's stuff has anything to offer, then the application of its own thinking would suggest more people need to have these thinking skills at their disposal. Hope to see a pop up/colouring in/video game version soon.
