      Wadsworth does a thorough job of explaining what most of us think of as our typical goals--better job, bigger home, etc. A good, solid read that is accessible to more than just Ph.Ds. It's as good as Guerilla PR: Wired, which deals more with how to attain business goals. If you're interested in focusing more on business goals and not personal ones though, Guerilla PR: Wired is definitely the way to go.

      I just saved you the price of this book and the time it takes to read it...so please send me a scholarship! Seriously this book is not good for the average individual looking for a scholarship. I read the entire book, carefully taking notes on possiblities, checked them out online and did not find even one scholarship that was a good match for my high achieving, caucasion, college freshman daughter. Not one.
      The majority of scholarships in this book are geared to high school seniors and they are obscure.
      Are you very fat and live in New England then yes there is a scholarship here for you by the New England Fat Acceptance Association. Are you a licensed pilot who is a member of the 99's..ok this book works for you too. Are you planning to study outdoor recreation AND you are a Canadian citizen AND you are a second year student AND you have financial need AND it is preferable that you have a background in canoeing? I bite my tongue..there is a scholarship in here for you too.
      And please buy this book if you live in the general area of Tyson City, Tennessee are a US citizen and have a Tyson facility near you along with demonstrated financial need and proof that you held at least a part-time job in the summer.
      And you may also want to buy the book if are a member of The Catholic Library Association.
      BUT for the majority of wanna-scholarship students you are better off doing a websearch on a good scholarship site and inputting your background. Reading this book is a laborious way to discover that you need more generalized scholarship offerings.
      Other details...book opens with "A Potpourri of Scholarships" and lists the top international scholarships for non-US students, top women scholarships, celebrity scholarships etc. Again..they may be top but they are very very specific. Next are pages and pages of scholarships sorted by categories. Then a list of career information sources, followed by an index.
      Save your dollars and search online and at your guidance office.

      This book was simply a waste of money-awful. The requirements to qualify for the scholarships is too incredibly specific. It is also the worst organized book i have ever read. It took so long to comb through the whole book only to find nothing. Please, I beg of you to buy a diffrent book. Don't waste your money.

      I'm a junior and didn't really find this book of much use. There aren't a lot of general scholarships. There's a lot of scholarships relating to specific schools or organizations. There weren't a lot of scholarships for essays, for juniors, or just an average person.

      The Japanese Negotiator as the name suggests projects a cautious approach to dealing with the Japanese in business situations. This book adds to the overall understanding of Japanese culture particularly those individuals and corporations hoping to forge relationships and conduct business. The book is primarily about negotiation but goes deeper to provide Japanese values, ways of thinking, roles and behaviour which are very important to the negotiator. He points out in simple terms "how do you deal with a person whose language and culture is a mystery to you". Thanks to Mr. March's experience and insights we get a guide on where to turn and how to prepare. In this book, he unravels some of the mystery and provides strategies on how to deal with different behaviour, attitudes and ways of thinking beyond logic.

      Clearly Japanese negotiation style is different. For example: he reveals that Japanese negotiators rarely consider what the other side is thinking or try to prepare or foresee its strategies, nor do they typically consider concession options. Culturally Japanese negotiators don't often talk openly in front of their opponents and which in western thinking appears secretive and rude. Typically he reveals that a position is stated and the Japanese negotiator defends it using a variety of techniques including acting passively, reacting negatively, showing a feeling of being hard done by and using melodrama.

      He presents a range of different case studies from personal experiences that reveal a variety of settings, situations and outcomes. Split into three sections, effective negotiation, ineffective negotiation and towards a better negotiation style. March systematically analyzes and explores topics that shed light on Japanese business practices. For example: Chapter 6 discusses the Japanese attitude toward written contracts - in which he reveals that trust is the bond that cements the relationship and flexibility oils the machine.

      A useful book for those preparing negotiations, working with or those wanting to better understand the Japanese in business.

                    It's probably the most accessible strategy book I've come across in the last 10 years and it will form the core of my executive development teaching from now on. Prof. de Kluyver has written a much needed text. It should prove ideal for busy executives and MBA students who want to get a handle on the latest issues in strategic management without having to wade through the typically lengthy tomes that tend to characterise this field. In just 141 pages of text the author covers many of the key topics on the agenda of strategic managers today and somehow manages to do so without sacrificing depth. I would recommend this book to practising managers and business students alike. For educational purposes it is an ideal first step on the road to the original source articles that comprise the cutting edge of the strategy literature.

                            This is a very practical book for anyone in the consumer risk management or non-developers of score models. Explains in plain language the practical aspects of interpreting KS scores (widely used in the credit card/mortgage/consumer finance/auto loan industries), dealing with the very pertinent issue of disparate impact (Reg B) and the even the basics of score variable analysis -including various types of biases that can come in to play.

                            I started reading this book with a low expectation but surprisingly I liked the book when I finished it !. Though it doesn't explain the statistical methods in great detail, its still a good reading for logistics regression based scorecard development. SAS is frequently referred in the text so it's easy for a SAS user.

                            The chapters I thought useful:

                            If the reader is not very familiar with US credit bureau data, Chapter 3 gives a good summary and explains the basic structure of the bureau file its importance to consumer finance.

                            Chapter 4- Scorecard development, Elizabeth Mays describes step by step how a scorecard is developed using logistics regression. More importantly, those who wondered how the final points (say a FICO of 580) arrived at, scaling and assignment of point weights to attributes are specifically discussed .

                            Chapter 5 - Variable analysis and Reduction details the information value calculations and commonly used variable reduction methods .

                            Chapter 13- Scorecard Monitoring Reports describes how to track them using front end and back end reporting. Though this chapter reads exactly like a FICO article on the same subject, its a good reading.

                            Overall, it does not have the disadvantage many people writing. Depth of some chapters is below expectation - for example Chapter 8 Score based loss forecasting.

                            I recommend this for anyone in consumer lending business. esp the beginning analysts. Also check with my site [...] for my recent readings.

                            Must of us have no clue at all what it means and what is involved in the organization of a political campaign. This book is a bible to run a campaign or to be a manager for one. It goes from the initial thinking that needs to be done before a candidate even considers running to what are the final steps when the campaign is through. Every step of the process is covered. It is really an amazing book. The only caveat that I would point out it is its strong focus on US campaigns, thus if you are not American and are thinking about campaigns outside the US this book will not cover foreign issues and also it may bias you. I.E. In other countries politicians do not raise funds in events where people go to hear them, on the contrary, many politicians especially in Latina America try to provide incentives for people to go to their speeches (of course this is controversial) and the book for example goes into this kinds of fundraising, that do not happen outside the US. In general however, it provides an excellent framework for a very organized and focused campaign.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good but a little dated - hope the 3rd edition is better.......2007-05-27

                            Catherine M. Shaw provides a plethora of information on running a campaign for local office. I have read four or five books on the subject, and this one is probably the best - certainly the most thorough! There are two flaws, however: 1) Ms. Shaw's recommendations are very low-tech. She advises you to set up various notecard systems, etc., that could be much more easily handled with computer software. Using the web, blogs, etc. isn't really mentioned at all. 2) From my experience, Ms. Shaw's expectations for masses of volunteers is a little (LOT!) more than the average candidate can really hope for. Maybe if you live in a politially astute area of the country like Portland, but for us folks in the mid-west, getting even two or three volunteers for a state house campaign (of an incumbent!) is quite an accomplishment. Her recommendations assume you'll have an unpaid staff of 10, 20 or more. Still, even with these flaws in mind, this is a pretty good guide. I recommend it.

                            I work in Professional Politics, and I absolutely love this book! It gives you a vast amount practical advice about running a political campaign. I describe it in my listmania list as "Pure Gold." Goes over everything you need to know about a local election. Even good a primer when working on a federal level race.

                            As a rookie campaign manager for a tax levy that was already defeated once, I needed to learn and learn fast. That's what this book helped me do. I've practically worn out some sections refering back to them time and time again. We are just entering the actual campaign, but I feel very confident with my campaign plan, and I am ready.

                            I highly recomend this book to any rookies out there!

                            This book is absolutely fabulous. If you are even thinking about running for office (at any level) or working on an issue-based like a school bond, GET this book. It's written in clear language for those of us who are not political nerds. It also has tons of good examples.

                            The title of the "Advertising Manager's Handbook" would seem to imply that the book is aimed solely at the advertising manager. However, the information on planning and layout is perfect for anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of advertising and put it to use.

                            The "Advertising Manager's Handbook" is a valuable aid to freelancers, as well as ad managers, providing information on everything one needs for an advertising project from start to finish. It is an essential text that should be on the shelf of every ad manager and freelancer.

                            The book is well organized and laid out, making it easy to locate needed information quickly. The how-to information for all print media television, radio, catalogs, brochures, direct mail, trade shows and other media is very nearly priceless. Easily one of the most comprehensive guides on the subject available.

                            Although the book's title slants the work towards the advertising manager, the layout and topical coverage is excellent for anyone who needs a good overview of the different types of advertising and how to prepare them.

                            As a freelancer, this book is invaluable since it provides between two covers everything you need for a project: how to prepare, the time frame, the way to go about writing the piece, and cost factors. It is definately an all-inclusive tome that every ad manager and freelancer should have.

                            The price may seem steep, but it pays for itself even if used sparingly.

It is very well organized by tasks and includes how-to information for all print media television, radio, catalogs, brochures, direct mail, trade shows and more.                             Might be an eye opener if you are 10 years old and were thinking of opening a restaurant. If you are serious about your project, you will not learn anything in this book. Useless...

Past research has typically dealt with the personalities of opponents, situational factors, or the behavior of "superrational" parties. In contrast, Neale and Bazerman argue that the greatest opportunity to improve negotiation performance lies in concentrating on the judgments that the parties make about their options and strategies and the likely behavior of their opponents. In considering the dyadic, multiparty, and market context of negotiations, the authors suggest that a careful assessment of the information available to the negotiator is essential for parties to reach higher quality agreements.
