This book is a valuable to the beginning early childhood teacher as it is to the experienced teacher. You will see new ways in which to deal with behaviors that seemed impossible before. It is very easy to read and would be an excellent addition to any early childhood library.

4 out of 5 stars Primer for life - negotiation is a daily activity.......2001-12-16

Negotiating is a normal process of life no matter what you do. Daily negotiations include with employees, supervisors, children, co-workers, or just about anyone that you run across. The book goes over the steps of negotiating including identifying your weaknesses and your opponent's weaknesses, breaking a deadlock, handling difficult people, when to mediate, etc. The book gives specific strategies for specific situations. How you would negotiate a better price for a purchase is different for how you would negotiate a pay raise and these differences are discussed and illustrated. The author also discusses common traps that negotiators set up for the unwary as well as blunders to be avoided. I was pleasantly surprised to go to an appliance store where the prices are clearly marked on the appliances and find that I was able to negotiate a better price with the salesman. I guess that even when it states a firm price, things are still negotiable if you know how to approach it.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars We can accomplish more together than any one of us can.......2004-01-25

My comments on this pocket guide are the same as those on the other two created by Rath & Strong, except that this pocket guide is probably the one to purchase in bulk quantity so that copies can be distrbuted among everyone directly involved with process improvement initiatives. Thus far, a substantial majority of Six Six programs either failed or fell far short of expectations. Why? Lots of reasons but one of the major ones is dysfunctional teamwork. Hence the special importance of this pocket guide.

Although Rath and Strong do indeed provide a wealth of information about Six Sigma, their "pocket guide" can be of substantial value to all organizations (regardless of size or nature) which need to simplify, thereby improve the process by which they produce whatever they offer for sale. Products, of course, but also professional services (e.g. legal, accounting, management consulting), memberships (e.g. healthcare providers as well as trade and professional associations such as chambers of commerce), and charitable support (e.g. non profit, tax exempt 501 (c) 3 organizations such as college and universities). Chapter One introduces the book's core concept, DMAIC, an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. A chapter is then devoted to each of the five separate but related process components. Rath and Strong explain how this process will guide and inform efforts to increase the ROI of resources to achieve whatever the desired objectives may be. One of this guide's greatest benefits is its ease of use: It can easily be carried within an attaché case, coat pocket, or purse, always available for direct and immediate access whenever needed. Now more than ever before, decision-makers are under great pressure to produce more and better results in less time, and with fewer resources. Hence the importance of improving first pass yield and cycle time, for example. Hence the importance, also, of enabling everyone within a given organization to understand how and why her or his efforts can -- and should -- contribute to the organization's operational excellence. For most executives, Rath and Strong offer a concise, easy-to-access, and well-written source of guidance to effectively defining, measuring, analyzing, improving, and controlling various stages of production of ideas as well as products and services.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent pocket guide for team leaders.......2003-10-14

This is a must have for all team leaders - very useful in any case (not especially Six Sigma related).

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Six Sigma.......2003-04-17

A fantastic Pocket Guide for all members of any kind of Team, not just Six Sigma Teams.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to strategic foresight.......2006-12-15

This book, Strategic Foresight (the combination of foresight thinking with strategy), is about 'standing in the future', your desired future and then looking back from there to take the actions that that future would require to bring to fruition. Strategy is developed from this place, where some, or all of the current assumptions that underlie the current reality will no longer hold true. Some futurists call this 'backcasting'.

The authors describe to alternative mental models ('Mental Model 1' MM1 and MM2). MM1 is about looking forward from your current stance and assumptions and designing strategy from that place, it's linear, incremental and does not meet the needs of our changing society. MM1 is based on the military model of strategy development. By way of contrast MM2 looks back from the future, is unbound from current assumptions and leads to unlimited ideas and resources, it's more based on natural systems, non linear dynamics, open systems, that kind of thing.

From here they start out by outlining the key drivers for change in the world and a useful model for looking at and examining the key components of those drivers, using several examples. Most chapters include several questions to reflect upon so that you can personalise your learning from the book and apply it to your situation. The book moves on to outline how to introduce foresight thinking into your organisation, using Nokia as an example (Nokia, is an interesting example, most people don't know the company's whole story and that it was not a manufacturer of electronics even a few decades ago). The authors developed their own model, 'The Strategic Biosphere' based on a biological worldview as a way of conceiving strategy using foresight principles, and considering that the 'organisation and strategy ... will unfold in a continuous biological process of learning and mistakes, of success, failure and readjustment.' Then they describe in detail in the book how you'd go about integrating futures thinking into your business and strategy with extensive examples, focal questions, charts and diagrams, and thought provoking ideas, all the time keeping it simple and keeping it relevant and applicable to your unique business situation. Included is a useful bibliography for further reading.

The book is a quick and easy read, one which clearly, simply and without excessive jargon explains their model, and it is a useful model, even though it is only one of many.

Australia has a few decent futurists, one of the best (I think his work is world class (and I've read a lot)), who has published much work is Sohail Inayatullah. Another, who's published more introductory work is Richard Slaughter.

If you're still undecided, you can download the first chapter from the author's website. They also have 'threads' of future issues that are updated regularly and trends, although there are many places on the web these can also be found and it's good to actually do your own research so you can keep your finger on the pulse of what's happening.

This is a solid book and will challenge some of your thinking and prevent some alternative viewpoints and from that perspective is worthwhile reading.

4 out of 5 stars Compels us to pay attention to embryonic signs in our environment.......2005-09-15

Strategic Foresight is easy to read. The authors explain how to (i) stand at a chosen point in the future (ii) look back to the present and (iii) develop a rolling plan to take oneself, one's company, city or country into the future. For the extremely busy reader, the first three chapters give you a good picture of the technique of foresighting and how it might be applied. The book helps to explain several emerging trends, even trends in the behaviours of our children but which, up to now, we have had some difficulty in interpreting. The book compels us to pay attention to embryonic signs in our environment and challenges us to come to terms with what they might portend. Required reading for all those who are interested in deriving competitive insights for success.

4 out of 5 stars It is very exciting stuff.........2004-01-20

To create the world where your business will be in 2, 5 -10 years time and draw your company in that environment is very scary thing. But makes a lot of since. It means a lot of reserch and planning but is extremely exciting. You will discover amazing stuff if you take this onboard. Easy to read and common sence.Very much recommended to today's business owners who want to be in business in 10, 20, 30... years time.

3 out of 5 stars Looks good but ultimately I found it disappointing.......2005-04-02

I thought this would be just the thing to get me band-ready. It seems like a great idea and it is simply and attractively formatted. The choice of songs is excellent. However, whenever I tried to use it, I was usually disappointed, for example:

                  - Born Under a Bad Sign -- tab only for solos (which would be better improvised anyway), chords shown but fingering suggestions would be helpful.

                  - Stormy monday -- scary chords & changes (fingering suggestions might have helped a lot here)

It may well be that I am not yet ready for this. The chords & chord sequences seem rather unusual & tricky for me, although conversley the solos seem pretty basic. Also, I am not yet in a band. For a new blues band this might provide some valuable insights & assistance. It seems a little overpriced at $19.95 with CD, for say $12.95 this would be a snap.

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point for a band.......2003-01-13

I jam with a couple other guys, and we've picked up five songs from this book. They're all great songs to work on. The book doesn't give you complete tabs of all the music, so you'll need to do a fair amount of work figuring out how to play the songs. So the book isn't for raw beginners, by any means. But if you have a fair amount of experience under your belt, these songs aren't terribly difficult to pick up. And they're all fun. Some are more demanding than others; for example, it's hard to do "Mojo Workin'" if you don't have somebody on harmonica. And some of the songs really cry out for keyboards, even though you can play them without.

The guys I play with don't want to do any more of the songs on the book, because they don't want to play just blues. That's a shame, if you ask me. I'm working on learning every single song.

Oh, and the performances on the CD are good enough to listen to for their own sake. They're not earth-shatteringly good or really inspired, but they're not dull either.

If you're looking strictly for a "jam-along" book, you might not want this one. The CD has all leads, rhythm, everything, included. They're complete band performances. You could still jam along (I do), but they don't have empty spots for you to play lead by yourself.

This book is one of the best values of all of the many, many music books I've bought over the years.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wow - tremendous book.......2007-01-03

I think it was about the second chapter, maybe earlier where he mentioned the 'magic stat thermostat'. Well, back when I was a kid in the early 80's (read like 10 years old), my dad used to get tons of mail order catalogs (like Hemmachler, sharper image, etc...), and liking technology at a young age, I used to look through them. Well, JS&A must have been one of them as well, as I specifically remembered this ad! I recalled the ad tearing the product to shreds before recommending it (I even remebered what the thing looked like). It was that substantantial, that as a 10 year old (roughly), I recalled it today. At the same time, I recalled another ad that I thought was odd - some handheld game that was supposed to be some big conspiracy. Sure enough, that was one of his ad examples at the end of the book.

This alone should be a testament to exactly how powerful his ads are. Not too mention, his writing style as an educator in the field of written ads is astounding - I could not put the book down.

Although geared toward catalog sales, the techniques clearly can apply to the web as well. So, if you are interested in selling anything - order this book now!

Joe Sugarman is a copywriting and marketing genius.

Probably known best for his "BluBlocker" sunglasses ads, Joe has provided aspiring (and experienced) copywriters with a treasure trove of useful information, tips and step-by-step techniques.

During the 80's Joe held annual Copywriting and marketing workshops and smart marketers willing paid thousands to learn his "secrets".

As far as I can tell, Joe has shared every last one of those million dollar secrets in this must have manual.

This one is a "no brainer". Buy it. Read it. Use it.

5 out of 5 stars A Consumate Master of the Written Word.......2005-08-05

Notice the last two words in the title -- 'Written Word.' Writing something that is intended to be read is different than writing for television, radio, or anything else that is to be spoken. There are different techniques for the two approaches, and Mr. Sugarman is a consumate master of the written word.

The concentration in this book is intended to be mail order writing -- sometimes in letter form, sometimes in the form of a brochure. Mail order advertising has a lot of advantages over other types of writing. The biggest one is that you have an almost instant measure of its success -- how many responses do you get. Then you can change the mailing package - any part of it, the writing, the typeface, the color of the envelope - and again you get an immediate response. There's no room for BS. And the successful people have to be good.

Most of the orientation here is for direct response mail order. The interesting challenge of the next few years, or maybe the next few decades, is to convert this writing style to the web. At first glance, most of the techniques given here would seem to apply. Using them and taking into account the special characteristics of the web is going to be fun.

The Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Marketing: Pay Per Click Advertising Secrets Revealed by Bruce Brown is a guide for anyone looking to utilize search engine marketing to increase traffic to their website. As someone looking to grow an online business, this is a topic I have long been interested in, but knew very little about before reading this book. Brown goes through the history of Internet marketing and explains why Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is superior to other forms of online advertising. He explains how to budget for a PPC campaign and how to choose effective keywords, measure the return on investment and use Google and Yahoo's campaign management systems. The case studies peppered throughout the book are particularly helpful as they offer real examples of PPC campaigns and their results.

One complaint I had was that Brown spends a little more time than necessary discussing topics such as Search Engine Optimization. The book strays from its PPC strengths, but in that it also provides additional information for those who would like to know a little more about Internet marketing.

I found this book very helpful as I prepared to launch my own PPC campaign. While some of the information in Brown's guide was not particularly relevant to my needs, it still offered large amount of help in understanding and using PPC advertising.

I have been looking for this book! Search engine optimization and pay per click advertising were mysterious techniques about which I knew nothing until I read The Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Marketing by Bruce C. Brown. The heart of the book is its detailed information about online marketing using search engine optimization and pay per click advertising. Several chapters are devoted to these strategies with regard to specific search engines, such as Google and Yahoo.

The purpose of search engine optimization (SEO) is to raise the ranking of your website on a particular search engine by the use of relevant keywords or phrases. The author explains how to choose the best keywords or phrases for your site and how to use META tags to raise your website's ranking. He also discusses keyword placement on a webpage. Did you know that some search engines only "crawl" a small portion of the text on a particular webpage?

Pay per click advertising (PPC) will reach millions of customers in a credible, cost-effective way. This type of online marketing plan can target a geographical area or demographic group, and it can be modified easily if it does not seem to be working.

The book also includes a history of online marketing and descriptions of types of online ads. Case studies, hints, tips, and advice round out the content. This is a clearly organized, easy-to-use guidebook for a person who is fairly internet-savvy. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets From the Pros.......2007-09-24

Pay per click advertising is all the rage. Hundreds of sites claim that "you, too can make hundreds of thousands of dollars" with the technology. But what is pay per click? And how can it work for the average person looking to get started?

The Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Marketing answers these and many more questions, beginning with the most obvious: What exactly is pay per click marketing, and why should the reader be interested in it? The author, Bruce Brown, explains the history and background of online marketing, and how it's become one of the most effective forms of advertising in history.

Search engine optimization is explored in detail, as each search engine has a different algorithm and tactics for returning results. Brown shows the reader how to capitalize on how each search engine fetches their information, through META tags, keywords, feedback, and other types of website optimization. Generating traffic to your website is obviously an important part of online marketing, and the author explains what the best strategies are for getting visitors to notice your web presence.

Yahoo and Google are the two premier search engines, and each has their own advertising methods. The author walks the reader through each, offering handy tips, step-by-step comparisons of cost effectiveness, and how to avoid click fraud. Microsoft's ad structure is also discussed.
Affiliate marketing, through eBay and other systems, can also be used effectively to net large profits, and Brown explains how to become part of an affiliate program, how to generate leads and traffic, and what the potential successes can be when using affiliates.

Included in the book are case studies that illustrate the points made and show real-life applications of the principles and strategies outlined in the book's previous chapters. Perhaps most valuable is the last chapter, which gives tips and tricks from the professionals who use SEO marketing and pay per click on a daily basis to make a living. The reader can learn from the best and start their SEO business right.

All in all, this is a great book, with a style that is professional yet entertaining and easy to understand. If you're looking to find out more and perhaps cash in on pay per click marketing--to augment your existing career or begin a new one--this book is a great place to start.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!!.......2007-08-20

As someone who is largely unfamiliar with the ins and outs of Search Engine marketing, I was extremely impressed with the way the author was able to organize and break down the array of information that was presented in the book. Beginning with a brief history of the evolution of online marketing (in which the author presents some staggering statistics about the revenue generated today by traditional mailings versus that which is generated by online marketing), the author touches on almost every online marketing topic available, from general information on PPC (pay per click) advertising to detailed breakdowns of the marketing costs on major sites such as Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo!

Though this book certainly offers something for anyone interested in essentially any facet of online marketing, I found a couple of sections to be of particular interest to me personally. The first section I thought was especially helpful deals with "How to Budget for Your PPC Advertising Campaign and Choose Effective Keywords." Not only did this section provide suggestions on how to best research and select the right keywords for a business (I discovered many web sites can help in suggesting popular keywords that often lead to more hits), it also gives a detailed formula on how to calculate the profitability of an online marketing campaign against the money that was invested.

Another section of the book I found particularly helpful featured tips and advice from online marketing experts. In this section, at least ten various experts in the field (including those who specialize in tracking online traffic and those who focus on search engine marketing) weigh in on the best ways to achieve results through various manners of online marketing campaigns (from PPC advertising to Search Engine Optimization). The advice from each of these experts is broken down into bullet points, which made the most important information stand out and become easier to remember.

The only significant drawback I encountered with this book was that the wealth of information often seemed a bit overwhelming. However, this is offset partially by the detailed and specific organization within the book. As a result, I found the information to be more accessible and slightly less overwhelming. For someone serious about plunging into the world of online marketing, this book will serve as a valuable asset And though you may not necessarily be able to grasp all of the information on the first read, it is definitely a book that should stay close by for use as a reference tool.
