Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive on the market.......2001-12-12

Pro: There are some outdated information or errors, but livable as this directory is the most comprehensive in the market.

Con: However, a time savings database requires a steep ($). Otherwise it deserves 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Not good in a bad economy.......2001-11-07

If the economy is bad, this book does not help a lot. Because companies do not use headhunters as much. But as soon as the economy comes back, I would buy the latest version again....

5 out of 5 stars great resource for changing careers.......2001-07-24

I've used this book a few times and know many execs who regularly use it to keep headhunters up to date with their resume. Half of the pages are indexes to you can find recruiters by where they are, what industry they cover, or what function (finance, marketing etc.) The most useful index is the one with hundreds of different detailed specialties for the headhunters. Basically the way to use this book is to contact recruiters who specialize in what you do. Don't expect hundreds of replies: they only call if and when they have a match, and your resume needs to be word perfect. But it only takes one offer! Another useful thing is they list "contingency recruiters" separately - these are more useful for technical and mid-level jobs around $50-75k. Definitely use the current year's book to avoid wasting time on old addresses, like the other reviewer said. Best used in conjunction with a resume-writing advice book.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but Dated Data on Executive Recruiters.......2001-06-11

It's pretty obvious Kennedy put a bunch of time into the collection of recruiter information. Even still, the phone and fax numbers had a ridiculous number of errors. The time it took to backtrack the errors made for frustrating hours of work. Let's just say the whole experience was marginal.

Executive search information in printed form might not be able to keep up with evolving data.

Get it when it first comes out next year or not at all.

5 out of 5 stars The Directory of Executive Recruiters.......2001-02-15

This is the bible of executive recruiters... It breaks the recruiters by location, retained versus contingency, as well as industry specific. Very helpful and up to date.

          Book Description

Today, companies capture and store tremendous amounts of information about every aspect of their business: their customers, partners, vendors, markets, and more. But with the rise in the quantity of information has come a corresponding decrease in its quality--a problem businesses recognize and are working feverishly to solve.
Enterprise Knowledge Management: The Data Quality Approach presents an easily adaptable methodology for defining, measuring, and improving data quality. Author David Loshin begins by presenting an economic framework for understanding the value of data quality, then proceeds to outline data quality rules and domain-and mapping-based approaches to consolidating enterprise knowledge. Written for both a managerial and a technical audience, this book will be indispensable to the growing number of companies committed to wresting every possible advantage from their vast stores of business information.

          Key Features
          * Expert advice from a highly successful data quality consultant
          * The only book on data quality offering the business acumen to appeal to managers and the technical expertise to appeal to IT professionals

          * Presents conceptual and practical information complementing companies' interest in data warehousing, data mining, and knowledge discovery

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practise book in data quality.......2006-05-29

David has written an excellent data quality book. He focuses on a real works around data quality. He presents a practical approaches how to solve a different types of quality defects and also pointed out main quality principles. But reader must think how to apply mentioned principles and approaches in reader's organization.

Simply, good reading with application on a real cases.

5 out of 5 stars David Loshin's book and quality improvement of New Zealand National Health Information.......2005-09-21

At the time the book was published I worked as a data quality manager at the New Zealand Ministry of Health focusing on the implementation of the Data Quality Strategy for National Health Databases. It was a great help for us. We've implemented many of David Loshin's principles. Most importantly it helped us to understand that the majority of our DQ problems were not due to the poor data management processes, but because of the inadequate system's design or poor data model, which was either conceptually or contextually incorrect, incomplete or inaccurate.

5 out of 5 stars Its all in the Details.......2003-09-14

Most of the literature on Data Quality focuses on the challenges of creating and maintaining a data warehouse. Thankfully, for those of us trying to improve the integrity of the information in our OLTP databases, this book presents a methodology which is not specific to any one data environment.

This book is packed with lists of cases to consider for each step of the methodology. Each case is nicely documented. Actually, much of the book is taken filled with the documentation for each case, which may cause a person to lose sight of the methodology that is being presented.

I am person who prefers to learn concepts. I am not as interested in memorizing details. Hence, I would read this book, skipping most of the documentation in the lists, instead focusing on understanding the methodology. Thereafter, I would use this book as a reference when needing information on a particular step of the methodology.

5 out of 5 stars Data Quality in the Real World.......2003-02-06

As a data warehouse practitioner for over 12 years, I was recently challenged at my current employer to help assemble a global data quality team and process. Having done much of the work before on a piecemeal basis, we made steady progress.

When I received my copy of "Enterprise Knowledge Management," I found two important things:
          1. We were definitely on the right track, and
          2. There were some things we had missed.

David Loshin has put together an excellent field guide to all aspects of data quality. It is very easy to understand, and contains practical, effective suggestions. Most importantly, it is a true "soup to nuts" guide to data quality. There is very little that you might need to improve your company's "knowledge quotient" that you will not find here.

I have heartily recommended this book to a number of people when asked about data warehousing and data quality. You'll not find a better handbook anywhere.

          5 out of 5 stars Management review.......2002-02-26

While I am not a technical person, this booked helped me enormously to understand the management issues that surround data quality. In today's world, I am shocked that more companies are not using this approach to save massive sums of money. This book has given me the tools to do so within my company. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars How to achieve and then sustain innovation enterprise-wide.......2006-08-24

In this volume, one in a series of anthologies of articles previously published in the Harbard Business Review, the reader is provided with eight brilliant analyses of how to establish and then nourish innovative thinking entreprise-wide. No brief commentary such as this can do full justice to the rigor and substance of these articles. It remains for each reader to examine the list to identify those subjects which are of greatest interest to her or him. My own opinion is that all of the articles are first-rate. One of this volume's greatest benefits is derived from sharing a variety of perspectives provided by a number of different authorities on the same general subject. In this instance, "the innovative enterprise." Readers will especially appreciate the provision of an executive summary which precedes each of the articles. Also of interest is the "About the Contributors" section which includes suggestions of other sources to consult.

These are some of the key questions to which the contributors respond:

Which "time pressure" situations yield creativity? Why? (Amabile, Hadley, and Kramer)

What are the most effective "tough-minded ways" to "get innovative"? (Pearson)

How to break out of - and stay out of -- the "innovation box"? (Wolpert)

What causes an R&D "machine" to "sputter" and how to repair it? (Peebles)

What does the "discipline of innovation" require of both individuals and organizations? (Drucker)

How can research help to "reinvent" an organization? (Brown)

If "creativity is not enough," what else is needed? (Levitt)

Those who share my high regard for this volumne are urged to check out other "Harvard Business Review on..." volumes such as those on Culture and Change, Effective Communication, Innovation, Knowledge Management, Organizational Learning. Also Thomas Kelley and Jonathan Littman's The Art of Innovation and The Ten Faces of Innovation, Teresa Amabile's Creativity in Context, Evan Schwartz' Juice, Jane Fulton Suri' Thoughtless Acts?, Michael Michalko's Cracking Creativity, and Making Innovation Work co-authored by Tony Davila, Marc J. Epstein, and Robert Shelton.

5 out of 5 stars Highly nutritional and tasty food for thought.......2005-11-11

Today when the word "innovation" becomes more or less a cliche, this book does breathe valuable substance (not sheerly vague concepts but practical advice) to aspired innovators supposedly to have the power to steer the course of an institution. Some readers might think that HBR publications are quality guaranteed. As a regular reader on my company's monthly HBR subscription, I assure you that's not the case. However, this book is really a big beautiful pearl. In particular, I like "the discipline of innovation by Peter Drucker" the most because of the author's emphasis on innovators' need to look for simple, focused solutions to real problems, that the greatest praise an innovation can receive is for people to say "That's so obvious!" and grandiose ideas designed to revolutionize an industry rarely work. Drucker also points out that if diligence, persistence, and committment are lacking, companies are unlikely to succeed at the business innovation. Other passages like "Creativity under the Gun by Amabile, Hadley and Kramer" and "Research that revinvents the corporation by John Brown" are also brilliant. Without exaggeration, it's a very useful and great read. Dont miss it.

          Book Description

In the thirteenth century the Mongols created a vast transcontinental empire that transported skilled artisans from one cultural zone to another. Among those transported were Muslim textile workers, resettled in China, where they made clothes for the imperial court. In a fascinating account, the author considers the significance of cloth and color in the political and cultural life of the Mongols. Situated within the broader context of the history of the Silk Road, the book will interest not only historians of the Middle East and Asia, but also art historians and textile specialists.

I first read this book when researching clothing of the Mongol Empire. Thoroughly researched and supported by primary sources, this book sets a gold standard of scholarship for textile and costume research. Although somewhat dry reading for most people, it provides valuable insight into cultural priorities of the Mongol Empire, in addition to practical information suited to the reenactor. Well worth the money!

              Book Description

Rostow, Kennedy, and the Rhetoric of Foreign Aid is the first comprehensive, critical analysis of the influence of economic historian Walt Whitman Rostow's theory of the "stages of economic growth" on U.S. foreign aid policy during the 1950s and 1960s. Kimber Charles Pearce analyzes Rostow's rhetorical approaches to producing and promoting his modernization theory to U.S. policymakers during the Cold War, as a template for development aid programs designed to contain Soviet expansionism around the world. Drawing upon Rostow's writings, public speeches, congressional testimony, personal interviews, and recently declassified documents, Pearce examines the economist's protracted campaign to convince policy makers to apply his theory of economic growth to the development aid initiatives of Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson. The analysis culminates in a case study of Rostow's influence on the planning, advocacy, and implementation of President Kennedy's Alliance for Progress to develop Latin America.

Pearce demonstrates how Rostow's dual role as a leading architect of U.S. development aid programs and U.S. military escalation in South Vietnam made him a key figure, both in the history of developmental economic theory and in U.S. diplomacy during the Cold War. He argues that Rostow's role in economic diplomacy epitomized the social scientific turn toward argumentation and advocacy that occurred in the United States after World War II. Using methods of rhetorical analysis, Pearce offers new insights into how Rostovian theory was translated into political language by members of the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson administrations, and how Rostow's themes of nation-building, fiscal interdependency, and macro-management of the global economy have become commonplaces of post-Cold War policy discourse. By illuminating relations of social scientific research, foreign policy advocacy, and political power in the context of U.S. economic diplomacy during the Cold War, Rostow, Kennedy! , and the Rhetoric of Foreign Aid makes a significant contribution to the study of the rhetoric of economics and American diplomatic history.
