5 out of 5 stars The best, in brief..........2004-06-17

On a regular basis, the Economist, one of the most respected news periodicals in the world, publishes this handy guide of facts and figures. This covers many of the 'vital statistics' of nations, multinational and non-governmental international organisations, and key political and economic topics worldwide, all compiled by the world-class Economist Intelligence Unit, who regularly publish reports for government and business leaders all over the world.

The first section of the book is on World Rankings. This covers important areas in geography, population, urban density, economics and living standards, financial and monetary issues, agriculture, business, transport, education levels, health and over social topics. You can find out here which country has the largest percentage of farmers (it isn't Hong Kong or Singapore), which country has the largest outstanding debt (think big -- big countries have big debts), and even which countries have the highest percentages of beer and wine drinkers, smokers, and music lovers (so you'll know where to party).

The second section of the book has an alphabetical listing of the countries of the world, with all of their vital stats spread across two pages -- demographics, economic stats, financial and trade data, exchange rates (generally), capital, geographic data, and more. The really suprising thing in this listing is that nowhere does it give the principle language of the country -- given the comprehensive nature of the data, one would think that a line or two regarding languages spoken would be a natural piece of data to include.

Also, this is not a complete listing of nations -- this includes only major nations, with a Eurocentric tilt. None of the Central American countries are included; there is a definite lack in Caribbean, African, and Asian countries also. However, to include all the nations would make this a jumbo-sized book, not a pocket guide. As it is, they have been selective, and while one might quibble with some of their choices, it is still a very handy and authoritative guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best single source for global statistical data.......2002-01-19

Few statistical compilations are as consistently useful and interesting as The Economist Pocket World in Figures. I have bought each annual edition since the early 1990s and count it as the single most useful reference source available to managers. The Pocket World is produced by the same group that publishes the weekly Economist magazine and expensive but invaluable country reports from the Economist Intelligence Unit. That lineage guarantees (as much as anything could) the timeliness and accuracy of data. The first part of the Pocket World lists 'world rankings' for over 170 countries using around 200 different measures. These include all the standard economic, population and financial measures as well as interesting comparisons on trade, quality of life measures, creativity and research indices and consumption data. A little cross-referencing produces useful and original information. Match (for example) per-capita book purchases (page 88) against computer ownership levels (page 86) and you can produce a linear regression that should be music to Amazon's heart!

The second part of the book has country profiles providing a two-page statistical breakdown for each of the world's 60 major economies. Spending some time comparing and contrasting the data gives the reader a greater depth of understanding about the factors that set nation's destinies. The sections on age distribution and birth rates, for example, clearly show the different national challenges raised for Japan (with the world's highest median age) and for many troubled African states where close to half the population is under fifteen.

For anyone interested in world affairs this is an essential book. It is an endlessly fascinating source of data and a reliable base from which to build an understanding of economic and demographic trends.

Book Description

Goldstein explores how change happens within an organization using some of the most leading-edge scientific and social theories about change and reveals that only through "self-organization" can natural, lasting change occur.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ...Or, How to REALLY Bring About Organizational Change..........2000-10-31

Jeff Goldstein's 1994 book "The Unshackled Organization," is considered one of the "must reads" by complexity folk who are in the organizational development business, and it is easy to see why. Little new has been said about the actual practice of facilitating organizational change and development since Kurt Lewin's work in the 1940's, save for perhaps Chris Argryis' and Peter Senge's works. Goldstein's prescriptions for facilitating change tap into the energy of the organizational system itself, and it's natural transformational qualities, leading to self-organization.

Goldstein is a business professor at Adelphi University, and serves on the editorial boards of Emergence and Nonlinear Dynamics, Psychology, and Life Science. Goldstein has been at the forefront of applications of chaos and complexity in business and management for 15 years. He was one of the founding members of the Chaos Network, the first formal professional society to devote itself to these ends, and was one of first presidents of the academic group Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology and the Life Sciences. Goldstein's current work is focused on the history of the concept of emergence, and its implications.

Goldstein states, "this book presents a practical approach to organizational change derived from state-of-the-art scientific research on how systems change". The book is "practical" in that while it does draw heavily from complexity theory, it does so in a user-friendly yet scientifically valid way. Each chapter introduces the theory behind the concept, and then discusses specific approaches and activities that the leader or facilitator could use to implement the concept; the chapter also has numerous short stories to make application of the concepts clear, and cartoons by Hannah Bonner that ground the concepts in everyday life.

Goldstein's work theoretically draws most heavily from Prigogine's concepts of self-organization, and Maturana and Varela's concept of autopoiesis. He describes the characteristics of self-organization as "radical reorganization of the structure of a system; the spontaneous emergence of novel patterns and configurations; the amplification and incorporation of random events; the discovery of creative alternatives for functioning; and the arising of new coherence and coordination amongst the parts of the system". Self-organization is induced by pushing the system to a state far-from-equilibrium; at such a state, the system can be nudged into a different mode (attractor pattern) of behavior by small, random fluctuations from the environment. The environment does not change the system, and the system does not unilaterally change the environment; rather, the environment triggers internal mechanisms that are the source for transformation.

Goldstein demonstrates how self-fulfilling prophecies are commonplace in today's organizations, and how such expectations act as equilibrium enhancers--barriers to change. Goldstein then makes explicit the different ways in which leaders and facilitators can bring about far-from-equilbrium conditions: work with organizational boundaries, connect systems to their environment, difference questioning, purpose contrasting, breaking self-fulfilling prophecies, challenge assumptions, represent the system nonverbally, take advantage of chance and serendipity, and use absurdity.

Let me momentarily step out of the typical role of a book reviewer to give some further credence to Goldstein's contributions. Having been basically mentored into this subject area by Goldstein, I have had the opportunity to "practice" what is being preached here. I have had dozens of opportunities over the past decade to facilitate organizational change efforts, and the list above has quite literally emerged as my strategic game plan. Every one of my successes in facilitating change can be traced to the application of one of these concepts.

Especially noteworthy is Goldstein's method of "difference questioning", which draws from a tradition in family systems therapy. Difference questioning seeks non-concensus by highlighting where differences exist in group attitude and perception; it seeks to "generate differences that make a difference." Difference questioning, in the hands of a skillful facilitator, can be an enormously effective tool for instigating far-from-equilibrium conditions. As an example, I reflect upon one situation where I was facilitating a quality improvement team and we were in our very first session. I asked the group to verbalize what "project success" meant for them--what were the end conditions that would be achieved if we were to be successful in our efforts. Everyone went around and chimed in what might be considered a "standard" response. I noted however slight discrepencies between two members responses. Intuiting that such a difference might make a real difference, I "exploded" the viewpoints of the two to a point where a heated discussion ensued about why the team was put together in the first place. After a tumultuous two hours, the group was in concensus about their mission and purpose and what it meant to "succeed".

In summary, I can only give this book my highest recommendation, as it has very personally and positively affected the way I practice organizational development. Equally important as a scholar, it has showed me the way in which we can transform the physical science of complexity into social science and practice.

    Product Description

The title of the ASQ certification changed to Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence to reflect the fact that the role of the quality function is continually evolving. Many of the responsibilities for the management of quality are being deployed throughout the organization into other functions. This now requires a much more comprehensive understanding of an organization as a system within the larger system of society. The range of tools and technologies that quality professionals are required to use and/or facilitate is also increasing. The ability to read, interpret, and use financial tools, as well as use the language of cost/profitability when talking to senior management, is more important than ever for quality professionals. In addition to being a peerless reference on quality management, The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Handbook is the most comprehensive preparatory guide for the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Exam. The handbook is completely updated to reflect the changes in the 2006 Body of Knowledge (BoK), and the pertinent BoK requirements associated with good quality management practices are shown throughout each section. These BoK requirements represent the range of content and the cognitive level to which multiple choice questions can be presented. Included in appendices are the newly updated Body of Knowledge, an extensive glossary of terms, a list of additional references for further study, and (on an accompanying CD-ROM) sample questions similar to those on the actual exam.

The book comes with all the information that is needed to prepare for the Certification. However it does not provide with specific examples as to how to use all the information. I would say this is a book to keep in the book shelf because it contains a lot of information: from Organizational Leadership, Team Development, Process Management, Quality Management Tools, Supplier Management and all necessary information needed to be known by a Certified Quality Manager. Lots of theoretical knowledge is portrayed on this book.

        Book Description

Most of what passes for strategic planning is not strategic at all. It is long-range planning or comprehensive planning, or in some cases just program or project planning. The result is a relinquishment of control to external conditions and circumstances, the perpetuation of obsolete systems, and organizational fragmentation and internal conflict. The opportunity to create new possibilities and realities--the ultimate object of strategy--is lost. Cook maintains that even to attempt strategy there must first be a strategic system, a system that deals with strategic issues, decision-making, and strategic action, which is preceded by strategic thinking. Cook combines these three aspects of strategy into a coherent, powerful concept that reinvigorates strategy with its original forceful meaning: "strategos--to lead an army." In this way strategy becomes the "means by which communities continuously create artifactual systems to serve extraordinary purposes." His book contains sound, pragmatic theory, original insights into strategic issues, and detailed hands-on guidance on all phases of strategic thinking, planning, and action. Cook explains that stragetics can be expressed as thinking, planning, and action. Strategic thinking "will always embrace five arenas: the definition of strategy, the meaning of leaders and leading, the distinction between condition and cause, the nature of systems, and the characteristics of organizations." Strategic planning, as a currently popular management practice, is not what it was originally. The definition has changed. The only definition that captures the original intent is: the means by which a community of people create artifactual systems to serve extraordinary purposes. Dr. Cook points out that strategic action is seldom included in any contemporary intepretation or application of strategy, yet action is both the realization of strategy and the creation of new possibilities beyond strategy. In that sense, strategic action is the end and the beinning of strategics. Thus, Cook takes the traditional idea of strategic planning, infuses it with strategic thinking, and carries it to strategic action. Instead of merely improving what already exists, organizations can create new systems that are capable of what he calls "constant emergence--always vital, always creative."

AT&T's divestiture was the largest corporate reorganization in history and has had international repercussions. It was a major development in American economic policy, and a prominent part of the deregulation movement of the late 1970s. This study reveals the internal decision-making process at AT&T and explains how private and public interests combined to shape corporate and public policy in late 20th-century America. Temin weaves the strands of politics, economics, business, and law into an accessible narrative history that will be of interest to the general reader who wants to know about government business interaction and how it affects American citizens. Temin portrays divestiture as a great experiment in public policy, competition, openness, and international policy. He concludes that the experiment has been a mix of deliberate design and uncontrollable forces whose outcome was not foreseen.

There's no mystery about why Internet-centric businesses figure prominently in the popular consciousness these days: they're a great way to make a lot of money. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting an Online Business acknowledges that you can make a killing by taking a Web company public and explains, in layperson's terms, a bit about the process. However, the real service in this book is in the way it brings the reader down to earth by puncturing visions of instant e-wealth and then diligently explaining how to make real (read "bankable," not necessarily "enormous quantities of") money. The income streams you can build are generally tiny by Wall Street standards, but they can be very significant on a personal or family scale. You'll get a realistic view of Web business here, and that's why this book is worth reading.

The book suffers a bit when it attempts to explain the mechanics of Web publishing (a huge subject that's covered far better elsewhere), and there's very little discussion of the specific procedures involved in setting up a site to take credit cards. (This is a significant omission.) Coverage of soft matters, however, is good. The reader gets a tour through the thought processes involved in developing a business plan, plus all the details online entrepreneurs have to take care of (including dull things like fulfillment and order processing). Having a good idea and an attractive Web site won't cut it. Rather, a successful business has to know its product, know its customers, and unfailingly provide top-flight customer service. This book shows how to do all three. --David Wall

Topics covered: Selling products and services on the Internet, as the startup process applies to everyday entrepreneurs. Sections deal with defining a business plan, getting money for startup and growth, designing a Web site that draws and retains customers, advertising, marketing, and fulfillment.

              Book Description

Learn to manage a Web site and maximize the use of information gleaned from an online presence. Also included: an overview of E-commerce, explanations of various Web software tools, the basics of Web design and how to set up a company Intranet.

              1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2001-01-25

This book tries to cover all aspects of e-commerce on the internet but stays at a "dummy" level in terms of educating the reader about the specifics. It lacked depth and was too general for me to get anything out of it. Plus it is cluttered with many outdated and annoying web references that detract readers from the chapter readings.

              5 out of 5 stars A great reference tool.......2000-07-19

There are a lot of references to resources on the web relating to the topics covered in the book. Just what I needed! The book has straightforward and simple writing about the considerations of starting and running a web site for profit. Then if you want to do more research, there are plently of URLs to start your research on the web about the resources available. Perfect for a beginner. This book also is showing up on bookshelves under the title "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting an Online Business" under the same ISBN. Gordon Whyte is not given credit as an author on this version, he just does the forward for the book.

Once upon a time, buying stuff on the Internet was easy. Once you were satisfied that your personal information was adequately protected by encryption and other security technologies, all you had to do was find what you wanted and submit your credit card details. You can still do that, but the Internet now boasts a myriad of ways for you to get stuff you want.

The number of facilities for selling your own goods to others is exploding too. Preston Gralla explains all of this in The Complete Idiot's Guide to Online Shopping, providing you with the background knowledge you need to buy and sell things on the Web; explaining such concepts as Dutch auctions and electronic coupons; and intelligently combining the capabilities of commercial sites, such as the numerous online automobile dealers, with free resources such as government crash-test numbers. He also shows how to milk Usenet newsgroups and consumer sites for commentary and buying advice.

A large part of this book consists of commentary on various online storefronts. Most of the entries deal with books, CDs, clothing, food products, and computer stuff, and it's not fair to fault him for omitting sites in an online-shopping universe that's changing so rapidly. Notwithstanding, you'll probably want to supplement Gralla's listings with fresher sources of information about places to shop online. You'll also likely get more assistance from online resources if you're looking for stuff other than mainstream consumer goods--say, parts for a specific car or specialized metalworking tools. --David Wall

Topics covered: Basics of Internet transactions, security considerations, avoiding scams, finding bargains, buying and selling at auction, researching and buying automobiles, searching for houses and apartments, and buying various consumer goods.

              Book Description
