                    Book Description

`I found Margaret Carr's book fascinating… the ideas and arguments put forward are well worth mulling over' - Early Years Educator

`This is an inspiring book from bilingual, bicultural New Zealand about revolutionizing the assessment of young children's learning and progress.... I hope this book inspires United Kingdom practitioners to set out on learning story journeys' - Nursery World

This book shows that an early childhood setting can be described as a learning place in which children develop learning dispositions such as resilience in the face of uncertainty, confidence to express their ideas, and collaborative and thoughtful approaches to problem-solving. These dispositions provide the starting point for life-long learning.

The author asks: How can we assess and track children's learning in the early years in a way that includes learning dispositions and avoids the pitfalls of over-formal methods, whilst being helpful for practitioners, interesting for families, and supportive for learners?

                    The book

                    · describes a way of assessment that stays close to the children's

real experiences and provides an alternative to mechanistic and fragmented

                    approaches,

                    · shows how practitioners can assess what really matters: those learning dispositions (interest, involvement and perseverance for example) that provide a foundation for life-long learning

The book is about weaving theory and practice: theorizing development and learning as reflected in assessment practice. The author also argues that unless we find ways to assess complex outcomes in early childhood they will be excluded from the teaching and the learning. Simple and low level outcomes and goals will take their place. The theoretical ideas and arguments are illustrated throughout by transcripts and stories of children in a range of early childhood settings. At every turn in the journey it asks: How is this reflected in a real life context? It documents the voices of children, practitioners and parents as the learning story develops.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for Early Childhood workers and parents.......2002-05-03

The powerfulness of this book, I believe, comes from its strong theoretical grounding in good quality Early Childhood research. At the same time it is very accessible to parents, teachers and caregivers working in Early Childhood. Lots of examples of children's, teachers' and parents' voices are given, clarifying and expanding on the discussion making it very readable and enjoyable. Although primarily about assessment, this book has made me reflect also on my assumptions and beliefs about children's learning. It presents a very powerful view of the role and methods of credit-based assessment in learning.

                        Book Description

This is a revision of a classic! This text provides a single source for information on both the structure and management of quality systems and the use of statistics to control and improve quality. It incorporates an international flavor and a good balance of services and manufacturing coverage. The goal of the second edition remains the same as the first edition - to promote learning by means of practical, effective applications intended to develop, control, and improve quality systems and processes.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Text Book that anyone has ever made.......2005-04-28

This text book is very bad. My professor for this class was almost as bad as this book. I can't believe that Amazon.com sells this book due to the low quality of it. Don't even buy it used because the authors made this up while they were on drugs because none of the chapters flow and they are lazy and make you refer to other examples that do not even pertain to the question. I wish Amazon.com let you score lower than a 1 star because this book doesn't even deserve that.

                        1 out of 5 stars not recommended.......2004-02-03

Very tedious, always refers to other examples, bad problems, unfriendly, unclear, no quality control

Reader unfriendly, tedious. Not recommended as a text for individuals entering the field.

Breakthrough Inc. was terrific. It was not another recipe book, rehashing old ideas. Instead, this book kept on asking me to stretch my goals, and suggested courses of action I could take that were designed at an MBA level. At times I actually did feel I was taking an MBA course as I visited such technologies as gap analysis, competitive analysis, and innovation analysis. Yet unlike an MBA course, everything was easily understandable and could be immediately applied. This book has already given me specific strategies for making my business more relevant in my market, and more profitable in my pocket.

5 out of 5 stars A corporate strategy for growth is delivered in spades........1997-12-02

"Director's Monthly," the official newsletter of The National Association of Corporate Directors, Vol. 21, No. 11, November 1997 says ... "CREATING AND SUSTAINING COMPANY GROWTH, by James B. Hangstefer (Waltham, MA: Burton-Merrill, 1997) promises a 'strategy for delivering concurrentgrowth in value to the key stakeholders of any company: customers, employees, and shareholders' --and delivers in spades. The author, who has run companies and served on a variety of company boards, offers a comprehensive set of managementand oversight tools organized around the concept of MOMENTUM. With practical tools such as a boards 'instrument panel,' Hangstefer lays out theresponsibilities of management versus the board, and shows how both can work together to achieve viable growth. Extras include a glossary and detailed case study."

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any businessperson...a fresh perspective.......1997-10-20

As Dr. Rohsenow, Professor Emeritus, MIT said on book's jacket...if you're in business and have time to read only one book, make it this one. He couldn't have been more on target. Book is a 9 out of 10 on business-book scale and a 10 on capturing a central thesis we in business instinctively know, i.e., the importance momentum plays in a company. Content explores how to measure it, build it, implement strategies to maintanin it, all toward assuring consistent company growth. Book lays out in easy-to-understand terms the important non-financial standards to use as measures to go along with traditional financial standards to produce corporate growth consistently. This book is informative for the business executive who knows his company is doing well and is mandatory for the executive whose company is not doing as well as hoped for. Book shows how to go about bringing constructive change painlessly. A fresh and provocative read.

This book provides a much needed analysis of the ways in which entrepreneurial firms manage their relationships with key suppliers during periods of growth. The analysis of these relationships, known as a value-chain partnerships, offers important insight into the success and failure of entrepreneurial firms. Through the study of value-chain partnerships in a large sample of high and low growth pharmaceutical manufacturing firms, the book identifies strategic factors leading to a firm's successful performance.

                                      Book Description

This is a unique, comprehensive and international history of the post Keynesian approach to economics since 1936. The author locates the origins of post Keynesian economics in the conflicting initial interpretations of Keynes's General Theory and in the complementary work of Michal Kalecki.

The book, now available in paperback, begins by focusing on Cambridge Growth, Distribution and Capital theory and early post Keynesian thought in the US. The failure of post Keynesian theory to supplant the neo-classical paradigm in the 1970s is also discussed, along with an overview of post Keynesian thinking in other countries. The book then deals with the search for coherence between various strands of post Keynesian thought and other schools of economic thought. The author concludes by assessing the progress made by post Keynesian economics since 1936 and considers several possible alternative futures for the post Keynesians.

Historians of economic thought as well as post Keynesian and other heterodox economists will warmly welcome A History of Post Keynesian Economics.

King's history of Post Keynesian(PK) Economics gives a general overview of the founding of a distinct PK view.A distinct PK school is traced back by King to two individuals,J M Keynes and M Kalecki.King covers the claim made, according to one of the founding PKers,by Joan Robinson, that Kalecki had written a superior, mathematical version of the theory of effective demand three years(1933) before Keynes wrote his supposedly strictly literary analysis in the General Theory(GT) in 1936.These claims ,as King shows, have led to the fracturing of the PK school.King also covers the capital theory controversies between Cambridge,Massachusetts(Massachusetts Institute of Technology)and Cambridge,England(Cambridge University)over the roles played by the rate of interest and theoretical neoclassical production functions in capital reswitching .The main conclusion that a reader will come to is that the disparate and disputing subschools that make up the PK school have absolutely no clue as to how Keynes arrived at the conclusions he did since they accept the canard put out by Richard Kahn that Keynes was a poor mathematician since 1927.Various assorted PKers, such as Lorie Tarshis and G C Harcourt, have contributed mightily to the "What did Keynes really mean if we assume that he was rational?"debate,a debate which only calls into question the basic coherence of the PK school. This has naturally led to a chaotic situation.Unfortunately,King(K)lacks the mathematical skills(basic differential and integral calculus) needed to work out the technical analysis that John Maynard Keynes provided in chapters 10,20,21, and the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT, in order to rectify the situation. An understanding of the technical analysis worked out by A C Pigou in chapters 8-10,pp.86-102,Part II,of The Theory of Unemployment(1933)is a necessary prerequisite needed in order to understand the comparison-contrast that Keynes made in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT between his model and Pigou's model.A reader who has covered the above mentioned chapters will be in a good position to discover that PK economics is essentially based on the 1954-1956 error filled Economic Journal exchange over Keynes's aggregate supply function carried on by Dennis Robertson,Ralph Hawtrey,de Jong, and Harry Johnson, who wrote an error filled mathematical appendix for Robertson, who was a self admitted mathematical illiterate.Three of the main founding fathers of PK economics,Sydney Weintraub,Douglas Vickers and Paul Davidson, simply adapted the Dennis Robertson-Harry Johnson case"iii-(a)"as their own.Unfortunately, the Robertson-Johnson model, in their case iii-a, contains three errors. The first error is that the expected aggregate supply function Z=g(N)=pO.On the contrary,Keynes defined ,in chapter 20,that his expected aggregate demand function D=pO,where p is an expected price and O=F(N) is an aggregate production function defined as such by Keynes on p.283 of the GT.Keynes's expected aggregate supply function is correctly specified as Z=P+wN,where P is defined by Keynes to stand for expected or future economic profit,w is a fixed or variable money wage, and N equals total aggregate employment. This result is easily obtained from pp.23-25 of the GT or by integrating the derivative specified by Keynes on pp.55-56,ft.2 or by integrating the derivatives specified by Keynes on pp.282-286 of the GT.The second error is the Robertson-Johnson claim that D=C+I.In chapters 5,6 and 10,Keynes specifies that Y=C+I.On page 209,Keynes further specifies that Y=PO,where,in the context of the Y-multiplier model of chapter 10,Y equals actual aggregate demand and P equals the actual price level. The third error is setting Z=pO=D=C+I,since the LHS is denominated in expected units while the RHS is denominated in actual units.Keynes's correct specification is D=pO=Z=P+wN.Both sides are correctly denominated in expected units.D=Z then specifies Keynes's aggregate supply curve, which is a locus of all possible pairs of expected prices and expected profits. The actual result,Y,will pick out one member of the set defined by D=Z.If mpc+mpi=1,there will be no involuntary unemployment(mpc equals the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods while mpi equals the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods). If mpc+mpi <=1,some level of involuntary unemployment is present in the macroeconomy. All PKers accept and work with the mathematically incorrect and incoherent models of Davidson,Weintraub, and Vickers. The mathematical errors and misspecifications in their own models are the reason why the PKers have failed in their challenge to the orthodox schools of economics since 1960.

                                            Book Description

“Bruce I. Newman tells us briskly, firmly what our instincts also tell us: We are mass marketing images rather than providing real leadership.” --Paul Simon, Former U.S. Senator, Public Policy Institute, Southern Illinois University “Gatorade and Coke do it, so do candidates for high office—they manufacture images and manipulate reality to win our favor. In this insightful and compelling study, Bruce I. Newman demonstrates what politicians and interest groups are doing to us and what we need to do to strengthen our democracy.” --Dennis W. Johnson, Associate Dean, George Washington University “Bruce Newman has written an incisive account of the role that marketing plays in contemporary politics. He argues persuasively that mass marketing techniques are profoundly changing and corroding American politics. His book provides an enlightful analysis of the ways in which marketers have transformed the presidential election.” --Richard M. Perloff, author of Political Communication: Politics, Press and Public in America “This book is a must read for anyone concerned about the growing trend of sound bite over substance, willful manipulation of the media over honest engagement of the American Public.” --David Wilhelm, Former Chair of the Democratic National Committee “While marketing has led to better quality in most markets, we are beginning to have serious doubts about what is doing to the quality of political life. Bruce Newman raises serious questions about whether anyone of merit can get elected today without the support of expensive and sophisticated marketing machinery.” --Philip Kotler, S.C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing, Northwestern University Marketing, not ideology, drives America’s contemporary political system, with an emphasis on image over substance, personality over issues, and 30-second sound bites over meaningful dialogue. Through the use of carefully crafted messages meant to manipulate voter thinking, the same marketing tactics used by Fortune 500 companies is shaping public opinion. The Mass Marketing of Politics details how marketing tactics are being used to determine public opinion, win votes, and shape public policy in the White House and Congress. The book points out the pitfalls of relying too heavily on marketing as a campaign and governance tool and offers solutions to fix our political system before it is too late. Bruce I. Newman is the author of The Marketing of the President (Sage, 1993) and the forthcoming Handbook of Political Marketing. He has served as a communication advisor to top White House officials and has written widely on the subject of political marketing in both scholarly and popular media. The Mass Marketing of Politics is provocative and essential reading for anyone interested in American politics, marketing, political communication, and media studies.

The author does a fairly thorough analysis of the role of the media in American politics in recent history as well as touches on how special interests fit into that role. A disclaimer explaining that these analyses are replete with tidbits that not-so-covertly reveal his political ideas and leanings should be provided at the beginning of the book in bold neon font. Though not really what I might call a page-turner, it gets the job done, and future predictions certainly give one something to ponder in the period of nearly unpalatable political pandering. This book is sure to provide material to continue the rich tradition of polemicizing about the state of American politics.

                                              Book Description

Traditional mathematical programming has concentrated on problems that can be solved by achieving a single objective. In reality, many multi-objective situations exist; concentrating on a single goal limits the applicability of math programming models. Accordingly, multiobjective optimization has emerged as a rapidly growing area. In this monograph the author draws from the more mature body of literature on multicriterion decision theory to enhance understanding of multiobjective optimization. There are obvious commonalities between the two areas, but to date no one has presented a book which unifies the two. That is the aim of Multiobjective Optimization: Behavioral and Computational Considerations. There are many behavioral and computational issues which are relevant to multiobjective optimization. These issues cross the disciplines of behavioral decision theory, information and decision support systems, and computational analysis.

Research physicians face intractable dilemmas when they consider introducing new medical procedures. Innovations carry the promise of preventing or curing life-threatening diseases, but they can also lead to injury or even death. How have clinical scientists made high-stakes decisions about undertaking human tests of new medical treatments? In Lesser Harms, Sydney Halpern explores this issue as she examines vaccine trials in America during the early and mid-twentieth century.

Today's scientists follow federal guidelines for research on human subjects developed during the 1960s and 1970s. But long before these government regulations, medical investigators observed informal rules when conducting human research. They insisted that the dangers of natural disease should outweigh the risks of a medical intervention, and they struggled to accurately assess the relative hazards. Halpern explores this logic of risk in immunization controversies extending as far back as the eighteenth century. Then, focusing on the period between 1930 and 1960, she shows how research physicians and their sponsors debated the moral quandaries involved in moving vaccine use from the laboratory to the clinic.

This probing work vividly describes the efforts of clinical investigators to balance the benefits and dangers of untested vaccines, to respond to popular sentiment about medical hazards, and to strategically present risk laden research to sponsors and the public.

“Concise and extremely well-written. . . . A fascinating synthesis of sociology, history, and institutional theory.”—Samuel C. Blackman, Journal of the American Medical Association

Now in a revised and updated edition that takes into account recent horrors such as the September 11 attacks, Culture Of Fear by Frank Furedi (Professor of Sociology, University of Kent, Cantebury, England) is a fascinating and provocative sociological study of the contemporary and increasing epidemic of fear in an age when people are statistically safer and live longer than ever before, even a mere century ago. Scare stories that turn people away from discoveries such as genetic research and genetically modified food are particularly worrisome to Professor Furedi, who exhorts a warning that the new media driven fears may well be over-hyped, leading the nation to collectively fear that the sky is falling, when the real danger lies is in the abandonment of scientific and technological advances in industry, medicine, and agricultural. Culture Of Fear is highly recommended reading for the non-specialist general reader, students, political activists, and governmental policy makers, as well as being a welcome addition to academic reading lists and reference collections.

I am writing primarily to respond to the Chicago reviewer who found this book less valuable than Barry Glassner's book of the same title and the work of Philip Jenkins. Glassner probably writes better than Furedi, but he's not a better thinker. Glassner's book has received a lot of attention, and it probably deserves it, but it isn't all that profound a work. Furedi, on the other hand, even though he probably pushes his argument too far (i.e., dismisses as fear mongering some things that are probably not), is much richer in his analysis. Jenkins, I must say, I find a bit irritating - at least based on his book on terrorism. While he has obviously done his homework and knows a great deal about the subject, he really doesn't end up saying very much of use.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For All Students.......2000-03-28

I was recommended the book by a lecturer at my university as a must read to attempt to gain an understanding of the socio-political climate of our times. The book does not disappoint: Furedi's work is rational, informative, well argued and progressive. It points the direction forward in these "post-modern" times where the victim is celebrated and humankind's achievements have been forgotten. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to see the truth about many factors in todays society.

I ordered this book by mistake, thinking it was the book of the same title by the sociologist Barry Glassner . I don't know who Frank Furedi is, but he sure isn't a writer (though to be fair, this book does come from an academic publisher). It's hard to critique Furedi's argument because his writing is so turgid. I suggest that people interested in fear and panics read instead the work of people like Philip Jenkins, whose work on moral panics is truly pathbreaking, or Glassner, who writes with great style and wit. I am familiar with this literature and did not read anything in Furedi's book that was original or provocative.

Those with an interest in this subject may want to buy this book, which does provide some interesting observations. But the writing is too dry, the examples too weighted toward the UK, and the overall conclusions too predictable to appeal to anyone else.

                                                      Book Description

The personal testimony of individuals engaged in healing practices and the opposing voices of orthodox and alternative medicines are the center of Healing Powers. Focusing on medical norms and practices and on competing philosophies of the mind, the body, reality, and rationality across radically different "belief systems", Fred Frohock clarifies the social and legal dilemmas represented by "scientific medicine" and "alternative care."

"Frohock goes beyond the often irreconcilable differences between scientific biomedicine and alternative care by clarifying the social and legal dilemmas they present. . . . A noteworthy contribution forcing us to rethink what medical care is all about."—Jeffrey Michael Clare, Journal of the American Medical Association

"The book does more and better than simply provide a social-scientific proposal. It also gives not only a hearing but a voice to those who follow alternative therapies. . . . Frohock's accounts of their stories—along with the stories of the medical professionals—are eloquent and fascinating."—Allen Verhey, Medical Humanities Review

"Contains a storehouse of valuable information about the historical, philosophical, and psychological bases of alternative approaches to healing."—Marshall B. Kapp, New England Journal of Medicine

"Frohock introduces us to the scientific naturopaths and to physicians who believe in the mind's power to heal, to charismatics who believe in but cannot explain their powers, to those who test God and those who merely accept. He writes so well that I felt I had met these people."—Arthur W. Frank, Christian Century

                                                        Book Description

Risk and Morality examines how decisions about risk and uncertainty relate to moral principles and ethical conduct. Editors Richard Ericson and Aaron Doyle have brought together in this volume a selection of original essays on the topic by renowned scholars in the disciplines of philosophy, sociology, law, political science, geography, criminology, and accounting from Canada, the United States, England, France, and Australia. Presenting cutting-edge theory and research, the essays analyse the broader social, political, economic and cultural dimensions of risk and morality.

The concept of risk has become pervasive in recent years in political discourse, popular culture, organizational communications, and everyday life. The contributors' respective research projects on risk and morality in politics, business, legal regulation, crime prevention, insurance, extreme sports, and biotechnology provide original empirical evidence to substantiate their theories and address the ideological and policy relevance of their work. Collectively, the contributors explain why risk is such a key aspect of Western culture, and demonstrate that new regimes for risk management are transforming social integration, value-based reasoning and morality. Further, they illustrate that these new regimes do not necessarily foster more responsible conduct or greater accountability in institutions.
