    5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver for a visual-spacial, homeschooled student.......2007-01-17

We happened upon this book by chance. It is the first curriculum my child has actually thanked me for and looked forward to doing. I can only hope that this is a taste of the future of textbooks. I highly recommend this book to any educator of fifth through tenth graders, but especially to those who teach visual-spatial students.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT book!.......2006-03-14

I had the fantastic honor of meeting Teri Tibbett in person and my children worked with her for two days. She is such a wonderful teacher and a joy to listen to! She shared from this book and I had to buy it. The information is presented in an interesting way and you can have fun learning history and how music is tied into it. I can't say enough good things about this book--buy it. You wont' be disappointed! Look for her other books at tibbet.com too. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Fun AND Educational.......2005-08-10

I used this book in Summer School this year with 9,10 and 11 year olds and found it to be an excellent blueprint for study of American Music. Tibbett has done her research and provides a comprehensive look at the cultural backgrounds to today's music. The examples on the CD are from original artists when possible and when not, Tibbett steps in admirably.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a music teacher to love this book.......2004-09-03

This book is well organized, easy to use, and will entice your reluctant readers and writers to learn more because the subject is music! You students will be thrilled when their culture is the subject of the lesson. At my school we even used it with teens and just accelerated the pace abit. Thank you Teri for capturing your knowledge and love of music, culture, language and children all in one place!

      Book Description

It's one of the best-kept secrets of the corporate world: for years, leading companies have been quietly using the Baldrige framework - not just to apply for this prestigious award - but to improve their bottom line results. Companies such as IBM, FedEx, and Xerox have been using Baldrige to conduct organizational assessment as a way of driving their improvement efforts. And pioneering organizations in other sectors - such as education, health care and government-are also using assessment to improve their 'bottom line': improved efficiency and better service to students, patients and citizens.

5 out of 5 stars A handy repository of Hutton's experience and wisdom.......2004-03-08

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Process has grown in 12 years to be one of the most positive and influential prgrams to come out of Washington D.C. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) uses a measure of performance of the publicly traded Baldrige Award winners that compares these companies' stock price appreciation with the S&P 500 Index. In the most recent year, the "Baldrige Fund" outperformed the S&P Index by a margin of almost 5 to 1. Most companies will never apply for a Baldrige Award. However, many companies have used a Baldrige-based assessment criteria to evaluate their business and to focus their improvement efforts. The author has written a very useful guide for managers to use in deploying a Baldrige-based assessment system. As a senior Baldrige examiner I know that most companies need guidance to gain maximum benefit from an internal assessment process. Mr. Hutton's book is a must read for any manager or consultant before undertaking Baldrige-based assessment. It will also be useful to managers seeking ideas to improve an existing approach. In Baldrige-based assessments, the "how" question is looking for systematic approaches to the management systems in an organization. In this book, the author describes a systematic approach to assessment and provides illustrations through case studies of a variety of companies and how they use the process to get better at getting better.

If leaders of any service business expect to achieve and sustain an outstanding level of service quality, they must sooner or later turn their attention to the organization itself as the means of achieving customer/ citizen focus..The culture, the vision and direction, the leadership, the alignment of resources and functions, and the motivation and commitment of the workers are all essential ingredients for service excellence. Therefore, if you hope to get things right on the outside, you first have to get things right on the inside. David Hutton takes us through the steps needed for an organization to undertake an organizational assessment His road map provides guidance and examples for users and acquirers of assessment instruments to develop a quality management system. Book Description

In this brilliantly conceived, practical book for managers, Dan Thomas shows how general managers can take advantage of core management processes-what he terms management's five freedoms -- that make the most difference between success and failure. Thomas, who has been an entrepreneur, educator, consultant, and manager, has devoted over twenty years to studying the strategy, structure, and systems of successful companies. He explains how managers can exercise their five freedoms to choose the right business, create the right strategy, implement the right systems, design the right organizational structure, and get the right people.

The single most important freedom for management, Thomas argues, is to choose the right business. He suggests that there are great businesses and lousy ones, and managers should choose a business with growth, profit, and diversification potential to drive shareholder wealth. Next, Thomas shows how, even in those businesses with a lower potential for success, creating the right strategy can produce superior results. Companies such as Wal-Mart in the otherwise faltering discount retail industry and Southwest Airlines in the ailing passenger airline business are cases in point.

Management's third freedom, developing the right systems, is illustrated by examples from successful companies such as Frito-Lay, and unsuccessful companies such as Micropolis, that have employed different types of information, incentive, and decision-making systems. Thomas discusses management's tendency to look for "quick fixes" through changes in organization structure that promise overnight success. He explains that realigning a company's organizational structure, the fourth freedom, must be based directly on the strategies being employed in the business, not the latest fad.

The fifth freedom-getting the right people -- is perhaps the biggest concern of top management. Thomas illustrates how general managers who have exercised their first four freedoms effectively do not have much difficulty in getting and keeping the right people. By providing techniques that allow managers to assess a person's skills and motivation, Thomas enables managers to exercise their fifth freedom by matching these assets to the business, its strategy, systems, and structure.

After I have been through many consulting and strategy courses, Dan reveals a simple approach to help improve your business. I feel the book is rather dense, so don't expect to get through it in a night. Dan says a manager have 5 freedoms that a manager/ ceo can control: 1)choosing the right business, 2) right strategy 3)right systems, 4)right structure 5)right people. After knowing some successful consultants, this book goes further than most have taught me. Dan reveals his consulting strategies that apparently have put his services in high demand. Powerful knowledge.

            Book Description

At a time when social commentators are increasingly likely to assert the “death of class” as a source of social inequality and conflict, this far-reaching volume reasserts the significance of class and gender for understanding socioeconomic conditions. Rather than declining in importance, class and gender processes are being transformed by social and economic changes associated with postindustrialism, including the entrance of women into the labor market in ever greater numbers, a shift from manufacturing to services, and the rise of part-time employment.

Moving away from the narrowly focused debates that have characterized much recent class analysis, the contributors to this book urge a nuanced approach that focuses on the specific institutional contexts of class-gender relations in various advanced industrial nations. Class and gender relationships in each country are contextually embedded, they argue, in such issues as the differences in welfare-state regimes, the varying availability of flexible forms of employment, and the degree to which the labor market is politically regulated.

The essays analyze the class and gender bases of economic inequality in ways that are sensitive to nationally specific institutional conditions. Two introductory chapters set the terms of the theoretical analysis and provide a framework for thinking about the relationships between gender and class. The remaining chapters offer comparative, cross-national analyses that investigate empirical examples of the links between class and gender relations, including the changing gender composition of the middle class, gender differences in access to managerial positions, the social ramifications of flexible employment arrangements, the links between paid and unpaid work, and the increasing feminization of poverty.

The contributors include Gunn Elisabeth Birkelund, Wallace Clement, Rosemary Crompton, Paula England, Siv Overas, Rachel Rosenfeld, and Erik Olin Wright.

1 out of 5 stars Not very enlightening.......2007-06-30

This book could be helpful to people who donate little bits here and there when the doorbell rings, and feel they aren't spending where they mean too. Really, though,it just finds several ways to tell you to stop and think about what you believe in and act accordingly. I recommend thinking about that on your own, and then donating the money you might have reserved for this book to that good cause.

For donors with over $25,000 to give there is only one chapter. The primary advice to large donors is to get an advisor. Then it offers pearls of wisdom like, "If you're thinking of making a substantial gift to an organization you will want to have some detailed knowledge about he group's financial situation. One way to do this is to review their budget and balance sheet." I wonder how many large donors really find such advice enlightening.

One last word of warning - if your politics are not left-leaning you may be offended by some of the assumptions which are put forth in this book as facts - such as that government is not doing as much as it should to help those in need.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to help the engaged philanthropist create a giving plan.......2006-10-19

After reading "Strategic Giving" by Peter Frumkin (ISBN: 0226266265) last night, this book was a bit of a letdown. I read both books last night at Barnes and Noble. Although this book was well written, easy to follow, short and to the point, and pleasing to the eye, its text fonts were larger and the line spacing was bigger than used in Frumkin's book. The larger fonts and line spacing made the book feel less credible. But that's just me.

I can't fairly knock this book, though. In fact, it is a wonderful book. It will provide much help to an engaged philanthropist when creating his or her giving plan. My recommendation is that if you are interested in being an informed and strategic major donor, then get a copy of both books because they really compliment each other very well. Gary's book provides the framework of a guide to putting a giving plan together, and Frumkin's book gives the necessary background information that will help you better use Gary's "guide."

The first eight chapters of this book are the meat of the guide. They will lead you step by step in creating a sound giving plan. And the last four chapters are an attempt to cover what Frumkin covers in his book.

I would have liked the book better if the diagram of the Giving Plan Model at page 198 included in Appendix A had been included up at the front of the book and fully explained in what should have been the first chapter. Then the author could have proceeded to more fully explain the model in the next eight chapters.

And I'm not sure Appendix B was necessary. To me the book was about "how to plan to give" to charity in a meaningful way. Not "how to give." I would liked to have seen more content in this book like the content included in Frumkin's book. And if that had been done, then Appendix B would have clearly appeared to be out of place.

All in all, this is a 5 star book and one that major donors should definitely read.

5 out of 5 stars Tracy is the Real Deal.......2003-07-24

Tracy's book is probably the most practical material you can get anywhere on engaged philanthropy. Whether you give a lot or a little, whether you give money or time, this book walks you through a process that will make your giving more informed, passionate, strategic, and effective. This book is based on many years of experience in which Tracy has given herself and worked with others who give. Tracy herself is a well-known progressive philanthropic and activist, but the worksheets in this book would work well regardless of a reader's philanthropic causes. Highly recommended.

                        Book Description

This book is for people who want to establish private foundations and the professional advisors who help them. Advisors, give The Perfect Legacy to your affluent clients as a prelude to a discussion about their personal foundation. The Perfect Legacy is an easy-reading introduction to a hot topic among the high-end affluent, starting their own private foundation. The Perfect Legacy will inspire your clients to request a foundation feasibility study from you, an opportunity for you to help structure the foundation's assets and consult on personal asset management and overall estate planning.

For people considering a private foundation, The Perfect Legacy is filled with anecdotes about other foundations and their founders, and pie charts and graphs. It sets aside the usual technical detail to focus on issues important to founders - just how the foundation fits into their lives and that of their families.

If you want any specifics about setting up foundations, this book is NOT for you. It is so short on any specifics, that anyone could have written it, whether or not they had any real knowledge in the subject. It was a big filibuster. It took me all of 30 minutes to read it.

The reader would be better of looking up definitions in a dictionary. For FREE.

Please, Please do not waste your money on this book, unlesss you have NO clue as to what a foundation is and are so wealthy that you just have to have someone spoon feed you insipid advice.

On the bright side, the author sure has profited from a great title!

1 out of 5 stars Billed as a "how to" book, there is no "how to" in the book........1999-09-26

The subtitle of this book, "How to Establish Your Own Private Foundation," should be subtitled "Why to Establish Your Own Private Foundation." The book is long on generalities, and the so called "conversations" that the authors call "case studies" are insulting. An example: "Cool," said Danny. "Can I smoke a big fat cigar?" "Get Serious," said Debbie. "The foundation will take some time and effort." "Anything's easy after a two-year-old, then twins," said Danny. Please note that there are also factual errors in the book, not the least of which is computing the IRS 1-2% excise tax on a foundation's earnings instead as 1-2% tax on assets owned by the foundation (an error of a factor of 10). Don't waste your time or money on this book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent educational tool on private foundations.......1999-05-21

It took a long time for me to find a book that both educated me on private foundations and addressed my concerns about setting one up for my family. This book is exactly what I have been looking for. If you are considering setting up a private foundation yourself, I highly recommend reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars I found the book very helpful........1999-05-19

When considering creating a private foundation for my family I found it very useful to know what other people who created a foundation thought. The book is loaded with statistics on private foundations gathered from national research. It was very comforting to know that my concerns were also the same concerns that others had. I feel very strongly about my charitable activities and this book was considerable help in deciding to create my own foundation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of private founations.......1999-04-04

If you want to understand why people set up private foundations and if you're thinking about setting one up yourself, then this book is an excellent source of information. After reading the book you know what it takes to establish and manage a private foundation.

5 out of 5 stars How to think about and plan your giving.......2000-09-24

Most of us give money to charity. This book will help you think about how to link your giving to your personal values, making sure you support causes that are most important to you. It will also help you organize your giving.

When I organized my giving and linked it to my own values, I found that I was willing and able to increase my giving, and to get more joy and satisfaction out of my gifts. That's a great result!

This book is a "workbook" with exercises that help draw out your most deeply held beliefs and links them to your giving. It does not espouse any particular set of beliefs, so it is good for everyone.

I found it a great help in thinking about what I hoped my gifts could accomplish. I also evaluated my existing giving, adding certain charities and dropping others when I focused on those that were more important to me.

A great book for givers at every dollar level from modest to substantial!
