        Book Description

There are two very contrasting approaches to reading this book and learning about organizational design. The more traditional approach is to read the book, and then use the OrgCon on cases and applications. The second approach is to begin with the OrgCon software and only examine the book as you find it helpful. Which approach is better? It is your choice, not ours. In our experience, students in organizational design prefer to start with the OrgCon and a case, rather than with the book itself. Readers who have more background in organization theory and design usually examine the book first.

There are numerous changes in the third edition. The literature review in each chapter has been updated. The information processing approach is strengthened and applied more comprehensively as the theoretical underpinnings. Throughout we have rewritten the text beyond normal editing in an attempt to make the presentation clearer and easier to read.

        Book Description

If you are responsible for designing, implementing, or managing a quality software program, this updated edition of the Practical Guide to Software Quality Management now identifies 10 major components that make up a solid program in line with ISO 9001 quality management precepts. Thoroughly revised and with new chapters on software safety and software risk management, this comprehensive primer provides you with the starting points for a standardized documentation system, and analyzes each individual program component separately, addressing in detail its specific role and overall importance to the system.

This is the only volume to offer a broad overview of software quality management for non-experts and experts alike. It is written in clear, easy-to-understand language and contains a complete glossary that demystifies technical terms, abbreviations, and acronyms. Useful appendices contain example and "starting point" documentation outlines. Moreover, every chapter features an extensive list of authoritative references directing you to the latest technical details on a variety of software quality management issues.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Broad, shallow, and seems rather dated, but some useful stuff........2007-03-04

I've been in software development for over 20 years, and now I'm starting a full-time QA job, so I'm loading up on book about software quality management.

I'm sure glad I bought this used instead of new! It's great as a general overview of the basic software quality management concepts, but there's not a whole lot of depth here. It's a lot of "what to do" without much help on exactly how to do it, though I will say that the few sample forms and planning outlines are helpful.

On aspect of this book I found partucularly disappointing is that is seems dated. Sure enough, it was written just over ten years ago, before a lot of the current intranet deployed collaboration software became widely used. So, rather then start printing all those forms you need to run your software QA system, just put them on your "Quickplace" or "Sharepoint" workplace collaboration system.

So, this might be a good first book on software quality management, but it had better not be your last.

3 out of 5 stars A solid addition to any SQA library........2005-12-25

This book won't win any awards for being flashy; however, it is a very well written introduction into the world of SQM. Well organized, with the key points consistently reinforced. A quick read that makes you hungry enough to pick up on the key points and explore them in more detail. If you're new to world of software quality, or only have a couple years worth of experience then this is a good purchase for you.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but Shallow Coverage of a Broad Topic.......2002-09-01

As stated in the introduction: "This book is a primer for those who need to understand the concepts as well as the value of software quality management...It is not intended to be a reference for the experienced software quality practitioner or the definitive text on how to accomplish all the software quality tasks available today." I agree with that statement. I found the coverage of each element to be shallow. I kept wanting more details from the author, but that would contradict with the intent of the book stated in the intro.
Horch identifies the aspects of a Software Quality System in the first chapter and elaborates upon them in a logical, sequential manner in the rest of the book. He ends with several outlines based on or adapted from IEEE standards. The thing that I disagree with the most is the author's statement in the Preface that "The audience for this book includes those who have been charged with the responsibility of creating and implementing a total software quality system in their organizations." The problem is that those people will already have a good understanding of the material presented in this book and as such, the book adds nothing to assist them in implemtating a software quality system beyond what they already have. I've gone back and forth between rating this book three or four stars. While I agree with the elements of a software quality system and their need I believe that this book fails to meet its goals.

5 out of 5 stars Blueprint for 'building' a quality organization.......2001-07-07

After I finished reading this 259-page book I kept thinking of how it was organized and how the author presented the material. Although I have been exposed to, and worked within, quality frameworks throughout my 25-year career this book triggered a clarity that brought together the essence of an effective quality program. This happened when I drew an analogy between the book's contents and approach, and constructing a building.

First, the book starts with a chapter titled "Elements of a Complete Software Quality System," which is the foundation. It then covers what I think of as the building blocks: standards, reviews, testing, defect analysis, configuration management and software documentation. It then fills in gaps, much like mortar, by covering associated quality concerns. Each of these "building blocks" and the "mortar" are thoroughly discussed in separate chapters. The actual construction comes in the final chapter titled "Quality System Implementation".

This book is copiously illustrated and the writing is straightforward. Although my analogy may be somewhat distracting, nothing in this book is - each chapter stays focused on its topic and goes into considerable depth. The author provides you with a solid foundation, quality materials and a blueprint for creating an effective quality organization, and does so in 259 pages. This book earns five stars for the influence it had on my thinking, and has my highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to put in use.......2000-04-04

+ve points: Gives practical guidelines to develop your own quality assurance plan. Useful for small to medium size projects. -ve points: SEI-CMM should have been covered in greater detail. an introduction to 6-sigma would have been useful. Not scalable to larger projects.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent language for describing business processes.......2003-05-16

The old saying about not being able to understand something until you can quantify it is generally true, but can be superseded by a more accurate statement. "If you can diagram it, then you can understand it, more particularly you can make someone else understand it as well." While most humans can think numerically, a large percentage have some difficulty with quantitative data. However, nearly all can follow directed diagrams, so they are generally a superior way to describe complex structures. IDEF0 is a set of rules for diagrams that are simple, yet allow for enough complexity so that the most complex of processes can be represented.
This book is an explanation of the IDEF0 syntax and structure and how to apply it to business operations. No previous experience is necessary, the diagrams are largely self-explanatory and what little extra explanation that is needed is provided. As a long-time user and instructor of the Unified Modeling Language, I am familiar with complex diagrams. Yet, I was surprised with how simple and effective the IDEF0 "language" is to use and understand. Using little more than boxes, arrows and labels, very complex structures can be described in a compressed format. The last two chapters describe how to use it and how to avoid making some common mistakes.
Business Process Reengineering is where previous business processes are modified to conform to changes in the environment. In order to be able to do that, you must be able to define what your previous business process was. The IDEF0 will allow you to do that, and I recommend that you read this book if you are currently in the process of altering your business practices.

4 out of 5 stars The best-written summary of IDEF0 presently in print.......2002-03-06

This is a book that is more about IDEF0 modeling than Business Process Reengineering (BPR). It is well organized with numerous diagrams and illustrations. IDEF0 conventions, benefits, and history are all well presented, but anyone seeking a "how-to" on BPR will not find much here.

The book provides chapters on the utility of IDEF0, its use by the Department of Defense (DoD) in process improvement, as well as IDEF0 syntax and semantics, their application (called pragmatics), and tips.

The appendices may well be the most useful part of the book. Appendix A describes the types of models and decomposition strategies. The next section provides many interesting sample models. A rather academic and dry treatment of SADT and IDEF0 is in Appendix C. In Appendix D, where SADT data modeling, IDEF0 and IDEF1X are positioned, the author asserts that "some amount of process modeling should be done before data modeling." The final section provides an insightful case study.

The primary concern about the book is its light treatment of BPR concepts. Also, the points made in the "Do's and Don'ts" section might have been better presented in the related sections of the text; the separate chapter seems redundant or confusing at times, making a single topic difficult to review. A detailed treatment of how to use activity based costing in process analysis and redesign would have been most welcome. Finally, the book seems incomplete without a listing of tools that support IDEF0 modeling.

All things considered, this book is recommended with reservations. It is the best-written summary of IDEF0 presently in print.

4 out of 5 stars More than practical, it's a fundamental of IDEF0.......2001-03-29

This book is more than the title said. I bought it to refresh my IDEF0 but I found many great stories behind IDEF development as well as the "growing" example while you learn. Compared to its size, you can finish this book in a day -but pack with lots of information. I found it's quite useful for brush-up my IDEF. For the new user of IDEF, it might be a little bit (just a little) to grasp the whole idea of BPR. Additional book of workflow management, BPR and system analysis are required.

4 out of 5 stars Just as the title says..........2000-04-06

An excellent book that goes beyond the FIPS manual in terms of increasing the readers understanding of IDEFO concepts. More importantly, however, are the sections on the do's and dont's. These sections are very useful in improving ones authoring techniques and are very useful for a project manager. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars My only guidence for doing process reengineering using IDEF0.......2000-03-30

My name is Louma I am from Jordan, my background is computer science, my comment on this book is:- Reading this book was my only guidence to do my job in process reengineering, it helped me a lot understanding the IDEF0 methodology. And I wish that this book had with it a booklet with more in depth explannation and examples for another cases may be a health service delivery, book production, security gaurding etc of general cases. I want to add that the book is writen in a very user friendly way and it is easy to be understood.

Thank you author. Keep the good work.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book on FP.......2002-08-12

This book was written almost five years to the day before the authors' later "Function Point Analysis: Measurement Practices for Successful Software Projects". It provides the foundation for the later book with a significant amount of overlap, but with some key differences as well.

The theme of both books is function point analysis as a software estimating technique. The focus of this book, however, is FP counting and analysis techniques with an emphasis on software engineering as a coherent process. The material is more geared towards introducing FP and making a business and technical case for using this technique. In my experience FP is most effective when used to estimate the scale of a software development project, while the traditional lines of source code metric is better suited to estimating size. Each has a place in an integrated approach to estimation, but this book is solely focused on FP.

If you want a higher level view of FP because you're exploring it as an estimating technique this book is ideal. It covers the reasons for, and philosophy behind, FP, and also goes into considerable detail. However, if you have standardized on FP as an estimating technique I think the later book, "Function Point Analysis: Measurement Practices for Successful Software Projects", will better meet your needs because it goes into much deeper detail and can serve as a desk reference. Both books have a place in the body of knowledge for software metrics and estimating, and both will be valid for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Function Point Estimation.......2000-04-05

The book is a great asset to those who want to learn and apply FPA method. I am amazed how well the authors have covered almost all aspects of FPA in this rather small volume. With this book, I hardly needed to resort to other references for counting function points in small and medium sized applications. Very well written book. I wish the authors consider a new addition in light of rather recent developments at IFPUG.

          Book Description

Interorganizational collaboration is not an easy process to implement successfully, yet it is becoming a significant means of achieving organizational objectives in turbulent environments. Creating Collaborative Advantage draws on the work of authors with a high level of relevant experience, providing a thought-provoking and highly accessible introduction to this new concept. The book begins by developing a framework of key dimensions for understanding collaboration. It highlights the differing rationales and contexts involved and the range of elements that need to be explored before embarking on collaborative endeavors. Next, the volume focuses on collaboration in practice. It examines the problems that can occur when different aims, cultures, procedures, power resources, and professional languages cross organizational boundaries, paying close attention to the importance of creating and sustaining value for the participants in these contexts. Finally, the book addresses the processes of acting as facilitator to collaborative groups, discussing how and why a third-party facilitator role can be helpful, and exploring the various processes and techniques that can be used. Creating Collaborative Advantage is invaluable reading for students and professionals in strategic management, public sector management, management science and operations research, and general management.

            Book Description

There are few industries, if any untouched by global competitive forces. Firms and countries long accustomed to dominance in their respective international markets must now reckon with aggressive and innovative competitors from all corners of the world. As the cross-border flow of people, knowledge, ideas, products, services and management practices accelerates, the notion of home-based advantage is becoming weaker. Unlike their domestic counterparts, firms competing across borders must deal with differences in political, legal, financial, cultural, governance and macroeconomic contexts. These contextual differences shape competition in international strategy and make the study of international strategy more than just a simple extension of classic strategic analysis. Global Strategy deals with the question of how firms can compete in a global environment. Andrew Inkpen and Kannan Ramaswamy examine the issues considered central to the study of strategic management in a global context, such as the nature of global advantage, strategic alliances, competing in emerging markets, international corporate governance, global knowledge management and ethical issues in international business. Much as been written about the relevance of global, regional and domestic strategies to counter competition from overseas and as a means to enter foreign markets. However, lobal Strategy takes a broader view, organizing itself around a set of strategic management issues that arise specifically because a firm is international. While there is obviously some overlap between domestic strategic management and global strategic management, it is Inkpen and Ramaswamy's contention that the differences between domestic and global strategy warrant specific attention. By integrating academic research with practical examples and case studies, they inform students and managers of global business about a diverse set of important strategic issues.

                Book Description

Creating Organizational Advantage presents a critical appraisal of fashions and fads in management theory. It exposes the strategic weaknesses of change programmes such as Total Quality Management and Business Process Re-Engineering and explains why so many companies fail to become 'market-led' or 'customer-focused'.

An examination of global competitive forces and the internationalization pressures faced by companies provides insight into key strategic challenges as we approach the 21st century.

Creating Organizational Advantage analyses: how globalization is forcing organizations to address their 'strategic sloppiness', why companies seek 'panacea' solutions to basic business problems, the strategic dimensions of organizational change programmes, the role of joint ventures and strategic alliances in compensating for shortfalls in core competencies.

These key themes are integrated within a framework which proposes balanced solutions for organizational survival and strategic prosperity.

Many of the ideas for the book came from the author's research consultancy and executive development experience with international organizations, including:

                Book Description

This engrossing history of an extraordinary company, Corning Incorporated, chronicles how one of the oldest business enterprises in the world maintained its place as a global leader in technology for over 150 years. In the nineteenth century, Corning developed colored signal lights for railroads. In the twentieth century, it created Pyrex and color television tubes; today, it is a Fortune 500 company leading the international marketplace in areas such as fiber optics and photonics. If you use the Internet, drive a car, or simply turn on a light, then Corning is a part of your life. The Generations of Corning tells the fascinating stories of its founding family--the Houghtons, the inventors, and the adventures, behind Corning's remarkable achievements--from unexpected discoveries, like the laboratory mishap that led to Corning Ware, to the years of painstaking, often frustrating, research that led to its breakthrough in fiber optics. From 1851 to 1996, five generations of Houghtons made Corning a company that combined a culture of continuous innovation with a sense of loyalty to its employees and their community. Davis Dyer and Daniel Gross show how the critical changes in organization and leadership that accompanied each new generation helped Corning not just survive, but to prosper, and push itself to the cutting edge of materials technology in decade after decade. The Generations of Corning is a classic success story and a triumph of the inventive spirit.

4 out of 5 stars Easy informative reading covering a very technical company.......2002-04-05

I approached the Generations of Corning with the same trepidation I approach most "business" books, only to be pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail, the historical perspective and the technical accuracy the book offers. A great history of the Houghton family and their beginnings in and around the Chemung Valley (Corning, NY) area and their strengths in the glassmaking / R&D community coupled with detailed business / labor / process information makes this an excellent corporate biography. Particularly the detailed explanation of partnerships that led to Owens-Corning, Dow-Corning, Ciba-Corning and Siecor will be of interest to business builders. Additionally the very detailed technical info on the evolution of manufacturing and marketing of dark fiber (my personal interest when purchasing the book) proves to be just enough without being so technical as to alienate the average reader.

I would recommend this book for those reasons, great business evolution info, just enough history to validate it and enough detail in current technical areas to make it timely to the fiberoptic community.

Examines the social and economic history of a major late-colonial trading center to cast new light on our understanding of Mexico's regional history. Offutt shows how Saltillo was home to a richly textured society that stands in sharp contrast to images portrayed in earlier scholarship, and she examines two of its most important socio-economic groups-merchants and landowners-to reveal the complexity and vitality of the region's agriculture, ranching, and trade.

                      Book Description

In "The New Entrepreneurs," Rene Reid Yarnell raises poignant issues being faced by a growing number of professional men and women across the nation and around the world. With so little security in the workplace, the aftermath of downsizing on both those fired and those left behind, women hitting glass ceilings, workers not paid their worth and saving little or nothing toward retirement, with employee agitation on the rise, more and more workers are looking outside of corporate America for more suitable alternatives. As the corporate executive was the hero of the 20th century, Ms. Reid Yarnell proposes that, with the advancement of technology and the World Wide Web, the entrepreneur will be revered in the 21st century. But it will be a new entrepreneur, not one climbing corporate ladders, nor satisfied merely with amassing financial accomplishments. The 21st century entrepreneur will also seek the balance of lifestyle freedom, self-mastery, and personal fulfillment and find it working from home. Not only employees but employers are candidates for this new form of entrepreneurialism, tired of measuring their success by what they gave up to get it. They realize that having their own business takes more money and time than they'd budgeted; they can never get away on vacation and leave the business behind; Friday payroll is not an option; and an increasing number of startups are going under.

What if, asks the author: you could have a business of your own...you could work at home...it didnt require a vast amount of startup cost...it requires no employees...you are in business for yourself but not by yourself...you inherit an experienced team who train you...you have an unrestricted earning potential...it has the ability to become a passive, residual income...you can determine your own schedule and prioritize your own life events...and you have the resources to contribute toward causes that are reflective of your values?

This emerging profession that has the potential to meet all of these criteria is called network marketing. What is that, you ask? It is a form of distribution of products and services that, through word of mouth promotion, uses the power of duplication of effort. Unlike conventional marketing that generally has a few representatives responsible for large volumes of sales, this form of marketing has large numbers of representatives responsible for a small number of sales. It is a form of direct selling in which the distributors are compensated on a multi-level basis as opposed to a more traditional single-level pay plan. The entrepreneurs who will carry us across the threshold of this new era will be legions of network marketers, waving the banner that signals our inalienable rights to lifestyle freedom, personal fulfillment, and financial peace of mind.

This remarkable industry, the author predicts, will be responsible for changing social trends over the next few decades. Spending more time working from home, which is part of the explosive trend today, these entrepreneurs will be better mothers and fathers; they will reestablish priorities and create lives with a more elevated sense of purpose and fulfillment; and with more capital in the hands of responsible individuals, countless people will make more money than they ever dreamed, with many of them using their newfound wealth for altruistic causes.

In "The New Entrepreneurs," you will be given guidance in deciding if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur, discerning whether the network marketing industry is right for you, selecting the right company, evaluating a compensation plan, joining an effective team, the unique challenges women face in network marketing, how to work in this business as a family, the evolution of the industry, and be exposed to the most frequently asked questions and their responses. If you learned today that, due to a medical condition, you had only five months to live, would you make any kind of change in your life? Then, asks the author, why wait? Why not make those changes now? If you are ready to explore creative ways to make a living while also making a life, you owe it to yourself to read this book and consider joining a growing number of New Entrepreneurs.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, useful book.......2007-02-28

This is without doubt one of the best, and most useful books I have read (and I have read many!) on the use of logic in business presentations. The book outlines a great process for structuring problems and synthesizing
complex information into a easy-to-understand story for decision makers. Linda Long is a great writer and teacher, and anyone who wants to improve their logical problem solving shoudl buy and use this book - I absolutely recommend it.

                      5 out of 5 stars strong framework.......2007-02-27

This book provides a strong framework for building arguments. It also provides a helpful structure for disecting the process of researching a problem and then writing the solution. The book is easy to follow and helps the reader to develop an argument in a logical and powerful way.

2 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money.......2007-02-14

There is nothing new to her book in the Communications field and her examples are not at all helpful for classroom discussions.

                      Who Really Needs Life Insurance?

"It's a very emotional issue and a very subjective one," says William Brownlie, a retired chartered life-insurance underwriter who now advises consumers and author of Life Insurance Boot Camp Buyer's Guide.

5 out of 5 stars For all stages of one's life..........1999-09-10

Life Insurance Boot Camp is basic training for the life insurance industry. Aimed at consumers of life insurance, this 330 page paperback (also in a diskette Word 97 version) will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about life insurance, and then some. From what to look for in a company or agent to the calculations for the internal rate of return of a whole life policy, this manual covers all.

William Brownlie is a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a career life insurance agent now retired from actively selling life insurance. He holds the CLU, ChFC, CIP, LIA designations. His other works include "Life Insurance: Its Rate of Return", and "The Life Insurance Buyer's Guide". He is also a former member of the Million Dollar Round Table, a group of life insurance sales achievers.

The book is divided into nine parts: Life Insurance Basics, Life Insurance Considerations, Term, Non-Term, Riders, Who Should Pay the Premium, Ledger Statements, Claim Procedure, and a Life Insurance IQ Test.

The material in the book is suitable for beginners to life insurance experts, although the internal rate of return discussion do get a bit complicated. The author is obviously an expert in this area.

Each chapter ends with the author's subjective opinion on the topic at hand, and leaves the reader with the impression of being gently guided along the education process.

If you could purchase one book on the topic of life insurance, this one should be near the top of your list.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for the forgotten life insurance market.......1999-01-21

An excellent primer for the middle income market long forgotten by the life insurance industry - because they have taken Plato's advice by developing "philosopher kings" as agents to serve those earning high six figure incomes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent life insurance primer.......1998-12-27

This guidebook excels in describing the "return" of a whole life policy. The author is an expert in evaluating the internal rates of return (what buyers are getting for their money measured in terms of compound interest) for term and non-term life insurance.
