Strategic Organizational Diagnosis and Design: The Dynamics of Fit (Information and Organization Design Series)
Richard M. Burton , and Borge Obel Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1402076843 |
Book Description
There are two very contrasting approaches to reading this book and learning about organizational design. The more traditional approach is to read the book, and then use the OrgCon on cases and applications. The second approach is to begin with the OrgCon software and only examine the book as you find it helpful. Which approach is better? It is your choice, not ours. In our experience, students in organizational design prefer to start with the OrgCon and a case, rather than with the book itself. Readers who have more background in organization theory and design usually examine the book first.
There are numerous changes in the third edition. The literature review in each chapter has been updated. The information processing approach is strengthened and applied more comprehensively as the theoretical underpinnings. Throughout we have rewritten the text beyond normal editing in an attempt to make the presentation clearer and easier to read.

Useful appendices contain example and "starting point" documentation outlines. Moreover, every chapter features an extensive list of authoritative references directing you to the latest technical details on a variety of software quality management issues.
Customer Reviews:
Broad, shallow, and seems rather dated, but some useful stuff........2007-03-04
A solid addition to any SQA library........2005-12-25
Decent, but Shallow Coverage of a Broad Topic.......2002-09-01
Blueprint for 'building' a quality organization.......2001-07-07
First, the book starts with a chapter titled "Elements of a Complete Software Quality System," which is the foundation. It then covers what I think of as the building blocks: standards, reviews, testing, defect analysis, configuration management and software documentation. It then fills in gaps, much like mortar, by covering associated quality concerns. Each of these "building blocks" and the "mortar" are thoroughly discussed in separate chapters. The actual construction comes in the final chapter titled "Quality System Implementation".
This book is copiously illustrated and the writing is straightforward. Although my analogy may be somewhat distracting, nothing in this book is - each chapter stays focused on its topic and goes into considerable depth. The author provides you with a solid foundation, quality materials and a blueprint for creating an effective quality organization, and does so in 259 pages. This book earns five stars for the influence it had on my thinking, and has my highest recommendation.
Practical and easy to put in use.......2000-04-04

The Practical Guide to Business Process Reengineering Using Idefo

An excellent language for describing business processes.......2003-05-16
The best-written summary of IDEF0 presently in print.......2002-03-06
The book provides chapters on the utility of IDEF0, its use by the Department of Defense (DoD) in process improvement, as well as IDEF0 syntax and semantics, their application (called pragmatics), and tips.
The appendices may well be the most useful part of the book. Appendix A describes the types of models and decomposition strategies. The next section provides many interesting sample models. A rather academic and dry treatment of SADT and IDEF0 is in Appendix C. In Appendix D, where SADT data modeling, IDEF0 and IDEF1X are positioned, the author asserts that "some amount of process modeling should be done before data modeling." The final section provides an insightful case study.
The primary concern about the book is its light treatment of BPR concepts. Also, the points made in the "Do's and Don'ts" section might have been better presented in the related sections of the text; the separate chapter seems redundant or confusing at times, making a single topic difficult to review. A detailed treatment of how to use activity based costing in process analysis and redesign would have been most welcome. Finally, the book seems incomplete without a listing of tools that support IDEF0 modeling.
All things considered, this book is recommended with reservations. It is the best-written summary of IDEF0 presently in print.
More than practical, it's a fundamental of IDEF0.......2001-03-29

Measuring The Software Process: A Practical Guide to Functional Measurements
David Garmus , and David Herron Manufacturer: Prentice Hall PTR ProductGroup: Book Binding: Textbook Binding ASIN: 0133490025 |
Book Description
Function point counting is one of the fastest growing software management techniques used in the software industry today. This book shows how to successfully execute the function point counting methodology, based on the current rules and guidelines set forth by the International Function Point Users Group (IFPUG). Covers software measurement and the application of the function point methodology, the specific rules and guidelines of the function point methodology, and function point uses and benefits. For programmers and software development managers.Customer Reviews:
Excellent introductory book on FP.......2002-08-12
The theme of both books is function point analysis as a software estimating technique. The focus of this book, however, is FP counting and analysis techniques with an emphasis on software engineering as a coherent process. The material is more geared towards introducing FP and making a business and technical case for using this technique. In my experience FP is most effective when used to estimate the scale of a software development project, while the traditional lines of source code metric is better suited to estimating size. Each has a place in an integrated approach to estimation, but this book is solely focused on FP.
If you want a higher level view of FP because you're exploring it as an estimating technique this book is ideal. It covers the reasons for, and philosophy behind, FP, and also goes into considerable detail. However, if you have standardized on FP as an estimating technique I think the later book, "Function Point Analysis: Measurement Practices for Successful Software Projects", will better meet your needs because it goes into much deeper detail and can serve as a desk reference. Both books have a place in the body of knowledge for software metrics and estimating, and both will be valid for years to come.

Global Strategy: Creating and Sustaining Advantage across Borders (Strategic Management)
Andrew Inkpen , and Kannan Ramaswamy Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195167201 |
Book Description
There are few industries, if any untouched by global competitive forces. Firms and countries long accustomed to dominance in their respective international markets must now reckon with aggressive and innovative competitors from all corners of the world. As the cross-border flow of people, knowledge, ideas, products, services and management practices accelerates, the notion of home-based advantage is becoming weaker. Unlike their domestic counterparts, firms competing across borders must deal with differences in political, legal, financial, cultural, governance and macroeconomic contexts. These contextual differences shape competition in international strategy and make the study of international strategy more than just a simple extension of classic strategic analysis. Global Strategy deals with the question of how firms can compete in a global environment. Andrew Inkpen and Kannan Ramaswamy examine the issues considered central to the study of strategic management in a global context, such as the nature of global advantage, strategic alliances, competing in emerging markets, international corporate governance, global knowledge management and ethical issues in international business. Much as been written about the relevance of global, regional and domestic strategies to counter competition from overseas and as a means to enter foreign markets. However, lobal Strategy takes a broader view, organizing itself around a set of strategic management issues that arise specifically because a firm is international. While there is obviously some overlap between domestic strategic management and global strategic management, it is Inkpen and Ramaswamy's contention that the differences between domestic and global strategy warrant specific attention. By integrating academic research with practical examples and case studies, they inform students and managers of global business about a diverse set of important strategic issues.

The Generations of Corning: The Life and Times of a Global Corporation
Davis Dyer , and Daniel Gross Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0195140958 |
Book Description
This engrossing history of an extraordinary company, Corning Incorporated, chronicles how one of the oldest business enterprises in the world maintained its place as a global leader in technology for over 150 years. In the nineteenth century, Corning developed colored signal lights for railroads. In the twentieth century, it created Pyrex and color television tubes; today, it is a Fortune 500 company leading the international marketplace in areas such as fiber optics and photonics. If you use the Internet, drive a car, or simply turn on a light, then Corning is a part of your life. The Generations of Corning tells the fascinating stories of its founding family--the Houghtons, the inventors, and the adventures, behind Corning's remarkable achievements--from unexpected discoveries, like the laboratory mishap that led to Corning Ware, to the years of painstaking, often frustrating, research that led to its breakthrough in fiber optics. From 1851 to 1996, five generations of Houghtons made Corning a company that combined a culture of continuous innovation with a sense of loyalty to its employees and their community. Davis Dyer and Daniel Gross show how the critical changes in organization and leadership that accompanied each new generation helped Corning not just survive, but to prosper, and push itself to the cutting edge of materials technology in decade after decade. The Generations of Corning is a classic success story and a triumph of the inventive spirit.Customer Reviews:
Easy informative reading covering a very technical company.......2002-04-05
I would recommend this book for those reasons, great business evolution info, just enough history to validate it and enough detail in current technical areas to make it timely to the fiberoptic community.

Book Description
In "The New Entrepreneurs," Rene Reid Yarnell raises poignant issues being faced by a growing number of professional men and women across the nation and around the world. With so little security in the workplace, the aftermath of downsizing on both those fired and those left behind, women hitting glass ceilings, workers not paid their worth and saving little or nothing toward retirement, with employee agitation on the rise, more and more workers are looking outside of corporate America for more suitable alternatives. As the corporate executive was the hero of the 20th century, Ms. Reid Yarnell proposes that, with the advancement of technology and the World Wide Web, the entrepreneur will be revered in the 21st century. But it will be a new entrepreneur, not one climbing corporate ladders, nor satisfied merely with amassing financial accomplishments. The 21st century entrepreneur will also seek the balance of lifestyle freedom, self-mastery, and personal fulfillment and find it working from home. Not only employees but employers are candidates for this new form of entrepreneurialism, tired of measuring their success by what they gave up to get it. They realize that having their own business takes more money and time than they'd budgeted; they can never get away on vacation and leave the business behind; Friday payroll is not an option; and an increasing number of startups are going under. What if, asks the author: you could have a business of your own...you could work at home...it didnt require a vast amount of startup cost...it requires no employees...you are in business for yourself but not by yourself...you inherit an experienced team who train you...you have an unrestricted earning potential...it has the ability to become a passive, residual income...you can determine your own schedule and prioritize your own life events...and you have the resources to contribute toward causes that are reflective of your values?
This emerging profession that has the potential to meet all of these criteria is called network marketing. What is that, you ask? It is a form of distribution of products and services that, through word of mouth promotion, uses the power of duplication of effort. Unlike conventional marketing that generally has a few representatives responsible for large volumes of sales, this form of marketing has large numbers of representatives responsible for a small number of sales. It is a form of direct selling in which the distributors are compensated on a multi-level basis as opposed to a more traditional single-level pay plan. The entrepreneurs who will carry us across the threshold of this new era will be legions of network marketers, waving the banner that signals our inalienable rights to lifestyle freedom, personal fulfillment, and financial peace of mind.
This remarkable industry, the author predicts, will be responsible for changing social trends over the next few decades. Spending more time working from home, which is part of the explosive trend today, these entrepreneurs will be better mothers and fathers; they will reestablish priorities and create lives with a more elevated sense of purpose and fulfillment; and with more capital in the hands of responsible individuals, countless people will make more money than they ever dreamed, with many of them using their newfound wealth for altruistic causes.
In "The New Entrepreneurs," you will be given guidance in deciding if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur, discerning whether the network marketing industry is right for you, selecting the right company, evaluating a compensation plan, joining an effective team, the unique challenges women face in network marketing, how to work in this business as a family, the evolution of the industry, and be exposed to the most frequently asked questions and their responses. If you learned today that, due to a medical condition, you had only five months to live, would you make any kind of change in your life? Then, asks the author, why wait? Why not make those changes now? If you are ready to explore creative ways to make a living while also making a life, you owe it to yourself to read this book and consider joining a growing number of New Entrepreneurs.

Who Really Needs Life Insurance?
"It's a very emotional issue and a very subjective one," says William Brownlie, a retired chartered life-insurance underwriter who now advises consumers and author of Life Insurance Boot Camp Buyer's Guide.
For all stages of one's life..........1999-09-10
William Brownlie is a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a career life insurance agent now retired from actively selling life insurance. He holds the CLU, ChFC, CIP, LIA designations. His other works include "Life Insurance: Its Rate of Return", and "The Life Insurance Buyer's Guide". He is also a former member of the Million Dollar Round Table, a group of life insurance sales achievers.
The book is divided into nine parts: Life Insurance Basics, Life Insurance Considerations, Term, Non-Term, Riders, Who Should Pay the Premium, Ledger Statements, Claim Procedure, and a Life Insurance IQ Test.
The material in the book is suitable for beginners to life insurance experts, although the internal rate of return discussion do get a bit complicated. The author is obviously an expert in this area.
Each chapter ends with the author's subjective opinion on the topic at hand, and leaves the reader with the impression of being gently guided along the education process.
If you could purchase one book on the topic of life insurance, this one should be near the top of your list.
