This book presents Autonomous Maintenance activities & focus of each implementing phase. It also lists tools used in each phase. However, it does not explore the tools in details (QX matrix for example). It also does not explore to much integration among the other TPM pillars with Autonomous Maintenance pillar during implementation phases. It gives good, simple and effective visual control examples.

                          5 out of 5 stars Truly thought-provoking!.......2004-04-05

I first picked this book up at the local library, and after the max three renewals and one late fine, I decided that I should buy the book. This one is for any senior exec. who would like to see a way, (but not necessarily the only way,) to organize their company for success into the new millenium. The author makes some very good cases for his vision of the new company structure, one which I personally think is both workable and think makes sense. While he doesn't necessarily provide a clean blue-print for re-organizing or building from scratch, he does give a great thumb-nail sketch that any reasonably intelligent business leader or entrepreneur could follow. I personnaly plan on building my next company on this model....I challenge you to read the book and do the same!

4 out of 5 stars Transform your company for the digital economy.......2000-11-28

If you are even thinking of doing business in the new economy, get this book! Bill Bishop's simple straightforward approach will guide both the technosavvy start-up entrepreneur as well as the established bricks-and-mortar CEO breaking out of the traditional marketing mindshell. Bishop persuasively describes how to rethink the strategic planning process and guides the reader step-by-step with case examples in both the service and manufacturing sectors.

I liked this book, especially Bishop's methodology of how to think about and serve the customer. However, I questioned the writer's use of the words "all" and "most" throughout the book when the evidence is an interpretation about how the world works. Then again, management instinct is often built on experience. I recommend this book to corporate managers, plant managers, team leaders and small business entrepreneurs transforming their business model for the digital economy.

Wall Street is a window into the soul of America and a battleground for a clash of the nation's values. So writes Steve Fraser, author of the epic book Every Man a Speculator. Fraser sets out to chronicle not so much the history of the "Street" itself, but its place in American society. Since the founding of United States, he says, Wall Street has been the place where Americans have wrestled with their beliefs about work and play, democracy and capitalism, gambling and investment, equality and freedom, God and mammon, heroes and villains.

This is an ambitious, fascinating tale peopled with infamous confidence men, cold-hearted fraudsters, and ruined speculators, through whose eyes Fraser tells virtually an alternative history of America. The 721-page book starts with William Duer, the country's original market swindler, who manipulated government bonds after the Revolution and died in debtors' prison. Duer's frauds left a deep suspicion of Wall Street among many of America's Founding Fathers and the general public. That suspicion only intensified, Fraser writes, after the panic of 1873, which Mark Twain satirized in his novel The Gilded Age, and the 1929 crash, after which Wall Street came under public supervision for the first time. After World War II, the Street staged a remarkable turnaround, as its "wise men" became key figures behind the Marshall Plan, NATO, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund. Today, despite the dot-com crash and corporate-fraud scandals, Fraser writes that Wall Street has still managed to retain a positive image in America's new "shareholder society." But he concludes on a dark tone expressing concerns about "gathering thunderclouds of world economic disturbance." He warns that any future market crash could plunge the Street back into disgrace while also reviving the political extremism and fascism of the 1930s. Fraser's elegantly written book manages to be both entertaining and thought-provoking. --Alex Roslin

1 out of 5 stars Erudite But Less Than Compelling.......2005-12-29

Regrettably one of the more unreadable tomes about Wall Street, "Every Man A Speculator" comes up as dry as a professor's rambling essay, as unyielding as a sermon, but with relevance much harder to discern. The book is laden with--one might say overly reliant upon--quotes and convoluted, often pedantic sentence structures. It is admittedly informative at turns, at times socially insightful, but with no joy in its reading. It compels as a reference manual would, but that's not why we read.

1 out of 5 stars Why Was This Book Written?.......2005-08-22

Every once in a while I come across a book that begs the question: why was this book ever written? Steve Fraser's "Every Man A Speculator" is one such book. While it purports to explain the impact of Wall Street in American life, it never reaches this lofty plateau. It is a regurgitation of stories told about Wall Street figures, stories told by other people much better. It assumes you already know what Wall Street consists of and the difference between what Wall Street actually is and what people assume is Wall Street. I won't go into what I had hoped this book would be and failed utterly at because that would be unfair. Let's just say that the research behind this book is second rate and that there is no analysis whatsoever. In fact, there is nothing new whatsoever in this book.

A person can spend a lifetime attempting to understand the world of finance. Or he can read this book. It puts into perspective all the sludge oozing out of CNBC, Greenspan, Snow and Company, Kudlow and Cramer and, of course, the Mary Meekers who have begun to surface again after, I suppose, a four year vacation on a private island. For those of boundless faith and small capital, it provides a healthy dose of sanity. If you are victimized by excessive wealth and thus forced to protect it by what is called investment but amounts to speculation, read this one along with The Death of Money, by Kurtzman.

In the world of limitless electronic money, the price of any asset is determined solely by crowd psychology. Every time it changes those numbers on the screen go up and down, and for people buying at the asked and selling at the bid it is a tough game.

For those worried about the country as a whole, Fraser explains in language anyone can understand how enterprise has become a bubble on a tide of speculation, returning us to a condition not experienced in America since the Twenties. The same tired arguments for Wall Street hegemony which history exploded in the Thirties have been resurrected by the financial elite and their acolytes in the media and economics profession. Will history repeat itself? Recent crashes have been reversible by massive injections of fiat money. In the absence of political will it is hard to imagine alternative solutions.

One of the best books you could possibly buy. Engrossing, interesting and a real epic work in my opinion. I am a professor of economics and this filled in a lot of missing pieces concerning economics, politics, culture, and history. Starts from the Revolution, and goes right to the present. I dog-eared many pages!

In July, 1849, the arrest of a local confidence man attracted national media attention.

It seems the con artist, one William Thompson, genteelly dressed would approach his marks discreetly flashing a handful of cash. He would confide to the mark that he intended to invest the bundle in a sure fire business deal. He offered to invest the mark's cash in the same deal if he would demonstrate confidence in the deal by pleading his money and gold watch. Thompson promised to return the next day with the watch and even more cash.

                          Of course, he never did.

Throughout history, Americans have held ambivalent views of Wall Street. One moment they see it as one huge casino. The next, they see it as a cloister of scholarly seers who possess a mystical secret for instant success.

Steve Fraser has written a Wall Street history that explores that dilemma's impact on the American psyche. Americans remain preoccupied with the sins and virtues of the financial markets. On one hand they remain committed to their ancestral values of hard work, play, equality, well-being and national purpose. Yet, they are still magnetically drawn to promises of instant wealth and success.

This well-written, thoroughly researched history explores this chronic tension. Through the colorful tales of confidence men and aristocrats, he offers the reader unique insights into our collective view of American Capitalism and its changing culture.

                              Book Description

The one thing that all brands desire is customer affection. They want to be loved. And when they are not loved, what are they lacking? Is it possible to find the missing element - the holy grail - that will bring them closer to their customers and their own people? In his new book, John Simmons reveals how to undertake and complete that quest - using the power of words.

3 out of 5 stars It flew well, but had a shaky landing.......2004-11-25

First, let me say thank you to John for his efforts. The read was definitely worth it. The book was not as academically systematic as say, Pearson's "Hero and the Outlaw." But, if you're an analytical sort of writer, I believe that you will enjoy "Grail."

True be told, I think "Grail" is two books in one, with the second book overshadowing the first.

In the first part of the book, John talks about "verbal identity" as a compliment to visual ID. I shared the book with my fellow advertising imagineers, and we had a spirited debate on the practicality of establishing an objective set of tonal guidelines for brand managers. My only complaint was that John left his readers hanging a bit by omitting real-world suggestions for helping a client adopt such principles. (Maybe Interbrand didn't want any trade secrets getting out.)

John's second big idea was the notion of storytelling and its importance in creating a deeper understanding of a brand's essence. John used some excellent examples, and delivered his points well.

Truth be told, the dust cover and title nod more to the first focus area than the second. But, that's a bit misleading in my humble opinion. John's passions seem to be more focused on preaching the virtues of story telling to add value to brands - and his sermon was well received.

King Arthur and his knights sought the Holy Grail. Brand managers seek another shining goal: public adoration and identification. Author John Simmons shares that quest, but his knights in shining armor are writers. If the real legacy of King Arthur isn't the still-missing Grail, but the magic of enduring storytelling, Simmons is a sword-carrier in that crusade. He somewhat self-indulgently advocates a creative experiment in brand management based on examples from his firm. In his experience, the most effective approach to brand building is to have "creative" writers - not corporate managers and certainly not non-creative writers - devise stories that are "true to the brand." Such stories, he believes, are the most powerful medium for conveying brand strengths. As with most myths, readers may wish for more empirical evidence, even while enjoying his observations about the English language and its limitations. We recommend this book to brand managers and corporate communicators who want to use language more creatively in hopes of creating that "Holy Grail" of a story.

As much of a misnomer as "Creative" is in ad agencies, this book is just a sad example of the exact opposite.

Main premise: like knights looking for the Holy Grail, you need the magic of enduring storytelling to seep into your branding efforts. A magic that comes from writers and "creative people" instead of "corporate managers" and "surely not non-creative people".

Shallow. Self-indulgent. Hackneyed. Sorry for not even attempting to be creative in lamenting about this tragic excuse of a book, but that's only because it is not worth it.
