Book Description
This detailed guide outlines a strategic planning approach uniquely suited to the academic environment and proven effective in numerous institutions around the country. The authors address the complex nature of stakeholders and conflicting purposes in an academic setting. Their approach leads to?rather than starts from?the institutional mission statement, and includes realistic methods of negotiating the political barriers that often obstruct the development of a strategic plan and its implementation.
This informative book is particularly effective when used with the companion workbook Working Toward Strategic Change.
Customer Reviews:
Necessary and Conceptual!.......2000-10-05
The book provides not only a conceptual framework, but also some methodology for enabling us to visualize the problems connected with the innovations. I think the people involved in the business of Higher EdAdmin will find this book very interesting and up-to-date tool for solving many problems associated with those innovations! The language of the book is very simple and this makes the book very interesting and accessible. I would wish to see more about presidency. I hope this will be improved in further editions of the book.

Book Description
The transformation of the corporate world is one of the most extraordinary events of the 20th century. How and why this transformation happened is the subject of this brilliant social history of business, which provides an intriguing look at how "the company man" has responded to the successive shocks of the past 20 years.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent history of corporate culture.......2000-06-15
What would we do without Anthony Sampson! Here is another Sampson book that carefully analyses an important part of western business culture to show us what it's really all about. Sampson always impresses with his grasp of the issues, but what I like most is his humanity. He is keen to show exactly what the changing business culture has done to the people in it, and who the winners and losers are. Sampson is not just another corporate booster, and combines the rigour of an academic with the narrative skills of a professional writer. All in all, this is a balanced book and a good read from one of our most insightful writers on business issues.

Book Description
This revised, expanded best-seller is a powerful new tool kit for the 21st century. The book that crowned the quality revolution (with over 100,000 copies sold since 1991) is poised to make it happen all over again.
This new and expanded edition of the widely influential WORLD CLASS QUALITY not only provides more techniques and case studies, but also extends them into new areas (such as the service sector) and shows how to use them in a wider variety of applications. A new coaching emphasis makes it easy for managers to make these tools available at all levels of a company and even to customers and suppliers. The book also offers: * A practical way to secure top management commitment and make "Design of Experiments" a way of life at any company * A new reliability technique that simulates field failures at the design stage so they can be prevented before production * A new chapter summarizing related quality management and control techniques, making this an essential book for managers concerned with quality.
Customer Reviews:
"Simpler" is better.......2007-09-20
Bhote has produced a treasure. All manufacturing professionals would do well to internalize this short book.
Besides explaining a simplified but very effective method of DOE (the Shainin method), this book does a great job of explaining another simplified but powerful SPC method: Precontrol Charts.
The explanation of Shainin DOE or Precontrol Charts are sufficient to make this book enormously valuable. Yet Bhote goes farther - he puts these tools into context within the overall production Quality system. He gives a lucid thumbnail sketch of the evolutionary stages of an organization's quality system, from what he terms "innocence" to "world class", and he does a convincing job of explaining the role of managment and of the quality professional in a manufacturing organization striving for world-class qulaity.
As if that weren't enough, Bhote includes an extremely powerful product design reliability tool -Multiple Environment Overstress Tests (MEOST)- and Poka Yoke (error proofing) which of course is both a design and a production methodology to achieve zero errors.
The criticisms of Bhote that I have seen generally come from two camps: (1) 'purists' who have disdain for simplified DOE & SPC charts, and (2) nit-pickers who are put off by Bhote's strong criticism of classical methods and annoyed by typos.
The bottom line is that the contents of this single book, in an amazingly concise manner, live up to the promise of the title. Implementing the methods as explained by Bhote will reduce variation to world-class levels and create a robust production system from design to finished product. The beauty of the Shainin methods which Bhote lays out is that they are much simpler than their classical equivalents, which makes their implementation much easier and thus more likely to be carried out.
Practical.......2006-03-01
The book explains excellent problem techniques in a very lucid manner. A must read for any process engineers, Six Sigma belts and any one in production/operation.
Some of the tools the author explains (like Multivary analysis) can be extended into a statistical study (ANOVA) and more detailed results can be obtained. I wish the author does some of it in any forth coming edition atleast as an appendix (if not in main text, to keep its simplicity).
It works........2005-09-18
As a process engineer I had spent a year with problem. There was nobody to solve it (in the multinational company). Together with my collegue, with two experiments (Component Search and Paired Comparision) we found the root cause and proposed the corrective actions - modification on tool. After implementation of our proposal the problem has gone forever!
Despite the fact that there are many mistakes in text, graphs, tables, it's the best book about Shainin DoE.
There are better............2005-07-01
I was somewhat confused when reading this book couple years ago to learn about Dorian Shainin approach. Fortunately, subsequent to reading this book, I read the following two much better books on Shainin's ideas:
Mnufacutring Solutions for Consistent Quality and Reliability by Robert Traver, 1995, amacom
Statistical Engineering by Stefan Steiner and Jock MacKay, 2005, ASQ Press
Practical.......2004-12-13
I'm not an academic in statistics and DoE but an end user to this advanced quality tools so I don't really care that much about the academic part of the theory so long as the methods help me in my work. What I find most interesting of Shainin's method is its practicality and ease of use. Keki has indeed done a great job in explaining the methods from his own industrial experiences without flooding the reader with too much theory. He used real life industrial application examples to illustrate his points which is something very useful to the practitioner like me. Although there're some typo errors in this book and could be frustrating but it makes you really read and understand the principle behind each method more carefully and that's good. After reading this book, I find an urge to share this new practical knowledge with my collegues because it is simply easy to use and yet powerful.
By reading this book and practising it in your work, it will becomes an assest to you. I'm not denying the contribution of the traditional DoE and Taguchi method because I felt that all methods are good as long as it is easy to use and at the end of the day help us to solve the problem.

The experiences of Rock Hill, a city of nearly 50,000 people located within the Charlotte, North Carolina (NC) Metropolitan Area, help the reader understand how many southern cities in the United States attempted to adjust to the social, political, and economic changes affecting their region since the 1960s.

Book Description
Political Institutions and Economic Growth in Latin America offers a new contribution to the literature on institutions and growth through the analysis of historical cases of institutional change and economic growth in Latin America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The contributors base their approach on the New Institutionalisma body of theory that posits that the specific features of regulation exert powerful effects on the efficiency of firms and markets. Using three key analytic perspectiveshistorical, economic, and politicalthe authors provide both insights about the economic performances of real-world economies and a methodological framework for further research. Closely analyzing the performance of an economy over time, the authors explain the following cases, among others:
- The political decisions and policymaking that reduced the international movement of capital in Latin American countries and steered their economies off the path of economic development
- How the Cuban sugar industry went into decline as a direct result of state-sponsored institutional changes in the 1920s and 1930s
- Why persistent inequality in income and wealth Latin America led to inequality in educationand ultimately damaged economic development
- How specific political rules produce particular economic resultsthrough an insightful analysis of the evolution of government subsidies and the regulation of railroads in Brazil during the nineteenth century
- Why the Brazilian textile industry enjoyed a period of extensive and intensive growth in the 1890s when the newly founded republic reduced restraints on the banking system
This book illuminates the history of economic growth and stagnation in this important region.

Customer Reviews:
Overpriced for what you get.......2007-10-22
This book does have a lot of useful information contained within the pages but it is impossible to sit down and read it. The writing is very bland and I think it would be impossible to read it cover to cover. However I have skimmed through the entire book to get a better understanding of its contents and refer back to it from time to time during projects.
As for the online portal I agree with the other reviewer, it is not worth the price of the book. And I really didn't like that it expires after a year.
If you are even looking at this book, I assume it is required reading for a class. If that is the case, buy it used, even if you don't get the online access, it is not worth the extra money.
The only thing active is the buyer's credit card! Tell your University not to use this book!.......2006-06-29
There is NO review material in this book. All of the review material must be accessed online. An activation code that expires after a year must be used to access any of the online review material.
My new finance books (hardback) cost only $35 more for double the number of pages, smaller print (the print size in Kotler's book looks like a freshman trying to make the minimum page length), and hundreds of exercises.
Marketing 2.0 is not worth anything close to the price. The buyer essentially receives a $115 magazine with an offer to subscribe to the publishers site.

Book Description
With the demise of WorldCom amidst a flurry of accounting scandals dominating the front pages, and following hotly in the footsteps of the equally spectacular downfall of other telecoms giants including Global Crossing and Lucent Technologies in recent months, The Great Telecoms Swindle investigates the reasons behind a roller coaster ride that is set to continue for some time yet. Vivendi, France Telecom, Vodaphone and numerous other corporate behemoths all face testing and possibly life-threatening times that will demand radical solutions in the coming months.
The telecoms story is set to run and run and investors are set to continue to feel the heat. For a market that, as little as eighteen months ago amounted to a license to print money, the question 'what went wrong?' must urgently be asked. How could companies like Cisco Systems go from being paragons of virtue in the new corporate age to near pariahs embroiled in a welter of financial difficulties in such a short space of time? Is 'next generation telecoms' nothing more than a myth, a triumph of hype over reality? Tracking the rise and fall of the telecoms market from deregulation in the eighties through the advent of the mobile world, and on to broadband, 3G, and the mobile Internet the authors uncover what fuelled the boom, where the mistakes were made (by industry players and investors alike), and what if anything the future holds.
Taking the lid off the headlines, The Great Telecoms Swindle reveals and examines the real problems in the telecoms market today, and exposes an industry that is entirely unsure of its own future value proposition.
