    4 out of 5 stars A great book for getting started - 4 stars........2006-02-03

This book stopped me from avoiding my PhD supervisor by the end of my first year. A guided text starting at the front end of a research project and moving gently through each stage - using simple language. As the title states this book, is a step-by step guide. For those of us starting on the road to research - even if it's a short lived journey to completing honours, masters or a PhD project - this book will be used and is worth the fee. A great step by step book for beginning researchers.

5 out of 5 stars had to have it.......2003-03-30

Am in the middle of a research project and am still trying to sort out all the how-to's of organizing the information. Got this out of my school library and know I will use it again and again as I continue through the process. So I just had to have it, even on a students spare budget. Definitely a keeper. The format of the book is approachable and the information is immediately useful.

      Book Description

"Geert Hofstede writes very clearly and engagingly. His interest in people is deep and genuine, and he enjoys the variety of their habits and motivations. His sympathy is usually with the underdogs in any situation, rather than those in authority, but he sees the humanity of both. His studies are carefully done. . . . His insights are nicely expressed. . . .The greatest value of Uncommon Sense About Organizations will probably be as a resource for management teaching, in its human behavioral aspects. --Systems Research "This is a worthwhile collection. . . . His work is notable for its international and cross-cultural approach. . . . Hence this book deserves a place on the bookshelves of serious students of organizations, particularly those with an international orientation." --Work, Employment, and Society "As the author takes us on an international journey, his writing covers a wide range of situations, from the shop floor, and the staff and management of multinational corporations, to the scene in a Swiss high school graduating class. The material, even when academic, holds the reader's interest because he writes about real events and people. . . . I enjoyed the international flavor of the cases and the freshness of the articles because the author revisits and analyzes the material, with the benefit of hindsight and continued scholarship. . . . I was impressed by the wide range of interests of the author." --Borje O. Saxberg, Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Washington Hofstede's lifetime of research into organizational behavior has yielded a considerable number of studies using a variety of methodologies. Uncommon Sense About Organizations assembles 17 of the author's superlative articles and case studies, grouping them within three main themes: the impact of jobs on people, power and control in organizations, and studies in training sessions. Hofstede further divides and examines these subjects in relation to their sizes, categorizing studies of the individual or small group as belonging to organizational psychology, for example, while attributing the study of a single, larger, and more complex organization to the discipline of organizational anthropology. The combination of the author's careful and informed scrutiny and his thoughtful juxtaposition of these topics reveals organizational realities that might not otherwise be discerned. Encompassing such wide-ranging disciplines as sociology, psychology and anthropology, Uncommon Sense About Organizations is a tour de force of behavioral science research.

        Book Description

The former CEO of Burger King blows the cover on corporate incompetence--and uncovers the secrets of good business--in his sharp-tongued, riotously funny book.

Why are so many businesses such depressing, poorly directed messes? Ask Barry Gibbons, enlightened capitalist, high-spirited wit, and the man who nearly single-handedly pulled Burger King out of a long, disparaging slump, rendering it robust and dynamic (without cutting heads).

In this rollicking, iconoclastic book, Gibbons blasts apart the thick wall of hubris, hierarchy, regimentation, and exaggerated complexity so endemic to the corporate world--and lays bare his 101 "Universal Laws of Business," commonsense truths about how to run a business profitably and well. His sage witticisms and sensible opinions cover motivational theory, limited terms for business leaders, being big but acting small, hurdling marketplace barriers, unhealthy profit, new branding, innovation, information technology, and more.

And Gibbons deftly answers nagging questions, such as: why mediocre products litter a hyper-competitive marketplace that demands distinct oneswhy the workforce is supremely alienated, exactly at a time when businesses need savvy, motivated employeesand why the most meticulously crafted business plan contains the one and only scenario guaranteed not to happen.

These 101 business truths will grab readers by the gut and make them gasp in relief. Because they're the things that most everyone (especially the folks laboring in the trenches) knows to be true--and wonders why the top dogs don't have a clue.

This is a good business book for people who hate biz books or for those who are tired of lousy ones. Very readible, incredibly funny and very useful. Should make you some money.

5 out of 5 stars Humor but with meaning.......2003-06-06

This book provides lots of good stories and hands-on lessons, mainly on small things about management/leadership, i.e. "If the corporate 'grandfather' (the boss's boss) isn't part of the appraisal process, it isn't an appraisal process." Total it has 101 lessons. Isn't that great?

Net, I like it a lot. Recommend it to any mid-level manager who works in a mid-size or large company.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to really laugh -- and learn -- read this book.......1999-12-24

This guy writes with the wit and wisdom of Tom Peters and the hysterical observations and honesty of Dave Barry. Loved this book. I want more.

5 out of 5 stars Barry Gibbons is not "irreverent" he's dead on!.......1999-10-02

Reviewers and critics of Barry Gibbons often talk about his irreverent humor. As far as we're concerned, though, he's dead on! Even his title for the book shows it. Here's a book that talks about business in a way that we've always thought it should be run. Mr. Gibbons presents his ideas in 101 Universal Laws of Business, but in essence these just state what most of us mere mortals (i.e., without MBA) would call "common sense". He starts off with what he calls "Tests of Rightness" (no, not righteousness!) Already, we thought we could start making our own rules. Look, if it doesn't feel right, then it probably is a mistake, right? These are not namby-pamby "feel good" rules, but basic common sense. Mr. Gibbons presents all of these pieces of wisdom with with the kind of humor that makes reading a joy. We sped through this book nodding our heads in agreement, and holding our sides when we laughed too hard. Buy this book, read it, live it. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars The humor bites with common sense.......1999-07-09

The management bookshelves are crowded these days with instant answers to age old management issues. Rarely does a book come along that contains as much common sense wrapped in style that is easily digestable.

Gibbons proposes 101 Universal Laws of Business stretching from the CIA Factor (Confusion from Implied Assumptions) to the absolute guarantee that what ever you have in your business plan is the one and only scenario that is guaranteed NOT to happen. Hey, even God designed the rhinoceros !! Probably not his best work, unless your another rhino.

This book proves that business can and should be fun, simple and full of common sense. You'll finish this book wishing you could work for Gibbons and even more importantly wishing you could manage like him. This book could help you get there !!

          Book Description

When it appeared in 1983, Caroline Humphrey's Karl Marx Collective was the first detailed study of the Soviet collective farm system. Through careful ethnographic work on two collective farms operated in Buryat communities in Siberia, the author presented an absorbing--if dispiriting--account of the actual functioning of a planned economy at the local level.
Now this classic work is back in print in a revised edition that adds new material from the author's most recent research in the former Soviet Union. In two new chapters she documents what has happened to the two farms in the collapsing Russian economy. She finds that collective farms are still the dominant agricultural forms, not out of nostalgic sentiment or loyalty to the Soviet ideal, but from economic and political necessity.
Today the collectives are based on households and small groups coming together out of choice. There have been important resurgences in "traditional" thinking about kinship, genealogy, shamanism and mountain cults; and yet all of this is newly formed by its attempt to deal with post-Soviet realities.
Marx Went Away will appeal to students and scholars of anthropology, political science, economics, and sociology.
"The book should be on the shelf of every student of Soviet affairs." --Times Literary Supplement
Caroline Humphrey is Fellow of King's College and Lecturer in Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge.

            Book Description

Henry George's political economy has been hailed as one of the great contributions of American social criticism. His writings have, however, invited interpretation in contradictory fashion. Commentaries have used him to uphold laissez-faire social Darwinism allowing for the aggrandizement of money. Some on the left have regarded his ideology as calling for a co-operative commonwealth well beyond the intentions of the single-tax mechanism. And there are those who see him as having, in effect, written a new Declaration of Independence as powerful as that of 1776. Bringing to light his previously unavailable British writings would clear up some misunderstandings and also present the man and his ideas in a fresher historical context.

            Unique Features of Asian Branding:

            1. Batey seeks a stable of at least twenty new Asian global power brands in a series of challenging country-by-country profiles. He investigates a diverse range of products and commodities in Asia; macros their present strengths and weaknesses and explores how they can become global power brands by 2020. His views will make this book truly controversial as Batey takes some Asian marketers to tasks while others will find his words inspiring and insightful.

            2. For the first time ever, the real inside story behind the development of the Singapore Girl campaign and the daring decisions made by the fledging airline as it took on the giant airlines of the early 1970s. This will be a must-read chapter for every marketing executive and advertising agency account handler. It will become one of the most quoted chapters of any marketing books as it demonstrates the success of unconventional, breakthrough strategic advertising.

            3. Batey's report card on the Asian advertising industry. What has it achieved? Where has it failed? Batey is the only industry leader qualified to write this analysis that will be widely quoted by the Asian trade press.

            4. For every Asian brand builders stuck for a strategy, Batey provides his proven guidelines on how to build a global brand from ground zero.

            5. For overseas-based brand builders looking at Asia from a distance, Batey brings them up to speed on the volatile Asian branding game.

Ian Batey is an established adman in Asia and is often known as the man behind the Singapore Girl. If you want to know what it takes to build global brands, this is a must-have book for you! I would say the most successful feature of this book is the inclusion of Mr. Batey's predictions of how a diverse range of Asian products and commodities can become global brand power in year 2020.

The Flexible Thinker gave me the tools to be on top of my game

I was amazed at the way this simple but newly constructed

I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to get over their
creative hump or jump start their business.

            5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2001-02-17

This book provides an pracical advice that can be used in everyday situations. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and examples in the book and anticipate this book will rival some of the classic "self help" books.

            5 out of 5 stars Practical & innovative.......1999-12-12

I found the book full of great ideas that are very practical. Easy & fun to read -- it may even change your life!

5 out of 5 stars A fun, thoroughly enjoyable and beneficial read.......1999-11-08

As the president of my own technology-related business, I found the need to keep ahead of the technology curve (and the ability to think one step ahead of the competition) quickly becoming a matter of survival. As a result, I decided to read this book.

Mike Rosenberg has hit on a topic that is becoming more and more talked about in the last few years; the ability to think outside the box.

All good and well, but just exactly how do you do that? By exploring his own dramatic and creative background, Rosenberg manages to tie the skills he learned in acting school (mostly creativity and improvisational skills) and adapt them to the business world, where they are suprisingly needed and effective.

Rosenberg helps average people discover new thought paths and ways of looking at problems they might not have explored on their own. By using real-world examples, amusing anecdotes, and skill building exercises, readers learn how to become more creative and original thinkers in their own lives. The book is extremely well written and readable, something that Rosenberg candidly admits in the book's preface is due in a large part to his wife, and applying his own books advice.

You'll find that after you read the book, you'll begin to see your problems (and as a result, options) more as creative tests and needed challenges. After all, this is where innovation is born. This book helped me to see situations like these in a new light: not as the insurmountable obstacles they had at times presented themselves as but as a chance to innovate, create, and in turn, become a better organization.

A fun, thought provoking and thoroughly original read. I hope we hear more from Mr. Rosenberg soon.

            Book Description

The U.S. Supreme Court, far from being above the political fray, has consistently made decisions that affect the electorate in profound ways—Bush v. Gore being but one example. This revised edition of the first over-all consideration of the role of the court in the electoral process is provocative and eye opening.

Of the first edition, CHOICE said, THE U.S. SUPREME COURT AND THE ELECTORAL PROCESS "plumbs the Supreme Court's constitutive apolitical role as `primary shaper of the electoral system' and reveals the pervasive involvement of the Court in the political process."

The U.S. Supreme Court—at least until Bush v. Gore—had seemed to float along in an apolitical haze in the mind of the electorate. It was the executive branch and the legislative branch that mucked about in politics getting dirty, the judicial branch kept its robes—and nose—clean. THE U.S. SUPREME COURT AND THE ELECTORAL PROCESS makes it abundantly clear however that before, during, and after the judicial decision that made George W. Bush the President of the United States, everything was, is, and will likely be politics—including the decisions handed down by the highest court in the land.

This revised and updated edition takes into account not only the recent judicial decision on the Presidency, but a myriad of others as well in which the U.S. Supreme Court has considered the constitutionality of a wide range of issues involving voting and elections, representation, and political participation. Practitioners and academics in both law and political science examine a number of court actions that directly affect how we choose those who govern us, and how those decisions have affected our electoral politics, constitutional doctrine and the fundamental concepts of democracy, including: racial redistricting, term limits, political patronage, campaign finance regulations, third party ballot access, and state ballot initiatives limiting civil liberties.

5 out of 5 stars Almost made me.......2003-02-15

want to go out and get in a fender-bender myself. We've all seen the famous Driver's Ed movies about the deadly physical and emotional consequences of auto accidents, but rarely has there been such in-depth treatment of the risk management and allocation consequences. I've read many books on insurance (and even reinsurance), but with the exception of Ostrager and Vyskocil's work, none have kept me turning the pages like Phillips and Chippendale. Look for more brilliance from this duo; the Simon and Garfunkel of the no-fault insurance literary community.

5 out of 5 stars No-fault? It's your own dam fault if you don't buy this book.......2002-03-26

While I have long followed the work of Jerry J. Phillips, it is more than obvious to the intelligentsia that Stephen Chippendale is the powerhouse in this dynamic duo. Chippendale takes the reader on a tour de force fandango adventure in the no-fault world, it really is quite first rate. He might be a younger attorney, but that is not about to intimidate that bad boy
