        Book Description

        This work aims to help primary and secondary teachers to recognize and teach mathematically able pupils. Roy Kennard reviews the characteristics of the very able pupils and shows how these characteristics are reflected in the National Curriculum for Mathematics. He goes on to show how: mathematically able children can be challenged through problem solving and interactive discussion; and the use of in-depth case studies and other examples of pupils' work makes it possible for teachers to see the consequences of the approaches discussed.

        This text also considers whole school organizational and leadership approaches and should be useful to school management teams or "gifted and talented coordinators." This revised and updated second edition should be of interest to teachers, advisers, lecturers and students with an interest in securing effective provision for mathematically able pupils.

              5 out of 5 stars A "must have" resource for every Consultant.......1999-04-25

              The title of this book should be "Way Beyond Negotiating" because it truly is a one-stop resource for guidance along the way to securing potential clients. Every consultant needs this book to learn how to gracefully negotiate, successfully manage client relationships and appropriately set service fees. "How do I price my services?" is a question I constantly get from fellow consultants, and Susan's book clearly outlines an easy formula to answer this question. This feature alone makes the book worth purchasing; then, as a bonus,the additional chapters are chock full of crucial information necessary to successfully close the deal. I have recommended this book to others, and expect once you read it, you will too!

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars An overview and outline to the ultimate 6 sigma reference.......2004-05-19

              Yes, it is true as several others may notice, that Managing Six Sigma is a book that refers often to Breyfogle's much larger tome, Implementing 6 Sigma. This book touts itself as an executive guide to learning about 6 Sigma, compares itself to other quality initiatives like TQM and Demming, points out the differences and does so in executive speak. It does also make a statement that it will refer to the Implementing book so it makes no bones about that up front.

              When you need more information, it points you to the section in the 1200+ page Implementing guide for the details. This book, however, gives you what you need to make an informed decision of whether 6 sigma may help you and your company out. I use it as a quick reference for the larger volume and quick hits. Besides, it fits in your briefcase and you can carry it on the plane instead of the Implementing book that is way too bulky to carry around with you. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has taken any 6 sigma courses as a refresher or for someone who wants to learn more.

              5 out of 5 stars Bringing together Quality and Strategic Management.......2003-02-12

              I thought this book did an excellent job of putting the Quality Initiatives many companies are attempting to implement in perspective with the total Business Strategies of a company.
              The authors continually point out that it is important to understand what quality initiatives are meant to bring about, and they focus the intent of the intiatives on bringing better quality to the customer, and an improved bottom line to the company.
              Thought the book did a great job in pointing out implementing Six Sigma wisely is a "good thing", but attempting it for the wrong reasons, and with the wrong focus, simply isn't.

              1 out of 5 stars Be VERY careful in buying this book........2002-03-23

              If you plan to "do" with 6 sigma, this book is probably not for you. Until now, I bought any John Wiley & Son, Publishers book on the premise that they always published quality....this book will make me more wary of what they intend the book to achieve (sales of more books or education of the reader). The books title leads one to expect it to be about managing 6 sigma and it may come closest to that objective, to use it's term, from 30,000 feet. Otherwise, it is mainly a marketing piece for a prior book by Breyfogle (Implementing Six Sigma). Dozens of times and sometimes two or 3 times on the same page the reader is treated to this: "EWMA techniques can be combined with engineering process control(EPC)to give insight into when a process should be adjusted. The mechanics of conducting an EWMA and EPC are described in Chapter 36 of Breyfogle (1999) Implementing Six Sigma."

              The glossary and list of symbols are inadequate. The problem with the glossary is murkey unclear definitions.

              Finally, the book is redundant with regards to listing repeatedly the "21 steps" it suggests to implement Six Sigma projects. Based on the table of contents, this should have been an excellent book. Evaluated on content, what a disappointment!

              5 out of 5 stars Hot mama.......2002-01-11

              I don't know much about the book, but the author is a super hottie tele skiing babe!

              2 out of 5 stars Not satisfied.......2001-08-07

              This book is primarily a marketing book for the author's first book. In every chapter, critical items are refered back to the author's first work. If you've read that book, you'll find this one interesting in regard to deployment. If you haven't read the first book, you'll feel you have been cheated in this book. I know I do.

              3 out of 5 stars Great taste, less filling.......2005-09-20

              This book had a pretty impressive title and subtitle. I thought it was an ok reading but a) it was little more than regurgitated article snippets and b) there was a lot of repetition from multiple sources. On one hand maybe this is good in that it was a good synopsis of various industry rags/pundit opinions, but it left me unfilled. I expected a book with more insight and analysis, but it was more of just copies of prior written materials.

              Not bad, just not nearly what the title/subtitle implied. A better name would have been "A Collection of Readings for CTO's".

              4 out of 5 stars a read for those in or aspiring to be in the job.......2005-03-22

              There are very few books that both tackle this topic and tackle it from the perspective of someone trying to perform the role, for this reasion Marks book is an invaluable insight for those who are looking for help or guidance and do not know where to go. the style is such that the book is readable and easy to follow. it might not have the ending of one of dan Browns novels but in the world of the CTO who needs surprises like that?

                Book Description

                This in-depth study of Chile's history, politics, and economics is written by a man who was British ambassador there from 1982-87. John Hickman witnessed first hand the economic transformation wrought by the "Chicago Boys" in the later Pinochet years and the return from military dictatorship and terror to democracy. The radical left-wing regime of Allende in 1970-3 and its violent overthrow put Chile on the world stage as never before, and its great economic success has kept it there. Hickman traces Chile's emergence and evolution as a state and conveys the unique characteristics and personalities of its leaders.

                This is a very well written book that provides a lot of historical information in an easy to read manner. I have travelled to Chile twice and have found it difficult to obtain books that write about Pinochet in an objective manner, because contrary to most books on the subject he is not universally reviled within the country. I think the author covered the subject well, not hiding warts but giving credit for the positive aspects of the Pinochet regime -- i.e., preventing a civil war and instituting the foundations of Chile's successful free market econmomy. I disagree with the other review to some extent, in that the author relies on his personal experience only in a few instances in the second half of the book, and most of that writing comes from his well documented research. There is a lot of information here in one book.

                  Book Description

                  "Makers of nothing, sellers of everything" is how official records define the marchands merciers of eighteenth-century Paris. These merchants were centered around the rue St. Honore, identified then, as now, with the luxury trades for which Paris was already internationally famous. They
                  established trading rights in items like fans, wigs, mirrors, and even ink, all of which were supplied to markets that were fashion-driven and likely to expand rapidly. Through an examination of inventories and other records, Sargentson offers a new perspective on the history of consumption,
                  painting a fascinating picture of the marketplace for luxury goods during the fifty years that preceded the Revolution. Her text raises important questions about the life cycle of objects and the way they were valued; the trading options of merchants who operated within narrow margins of credit and
                  cash flow; and the relations between the different groups jostling for position and advantage.

                  Book Description

                  One of the most frequent activities a prospective or existing small business owner takes is to ask a few friends or business associates about their reactions to a new product and then produce the product or start a new business based on those opinions. This informal "market research" can be very costly because it often incorrectly estimates your prospective market. But if you know how to systematically and effectively collect and analyze information from prospective customers, you can save time and a great deal of money.

                  Know Your Market takes the guesswork out of understanding your customers and their needs. Demonstrating step-by-step how to construct a typical research project, this streamlined guide explores all aspects of market analysis in language free of jargon and confusing abstraction.

                  Beyond the nuts and bolts of collecting, classifying and storing data, Know Your Market explains how to set up information systems, and how to gather, analyze, and present information on products, markets, market segments, and market shares.

                  Complete with worksheets, charts, tables and checklists, this practical guide will show you how to:

                  * Determine research objectives
                  * Monitor marketing efforts
                  * Budget a research project
                  * Perform secondary research and make the best use of available information in print
                  * Prepare and present an effective final report

                  Being a small business owner myself - I found the book helped me to better understand the needs of my customers - especially when it comes to collecting and analyzing information from prospective customers.

                  Market Research can be a dry topic, but Frigstad brought it to life in this piece. In my quest for marketing knowledge I found this book to be very helpful, tastefully written and inspiring.

                  This book was a waste of time, not to mention money. It is full of vague generalities and is has such a sopoforic writing style that its one legitimate use might be as an insomnia remedy. There is very little concrete, useful information in this book.

                      Book Description

                      In the 1960s and 1970s, Congress enacted a vast body of legislation to protect the environment and individual health and safety. Collectively, this legislation is known as “risk regulation” because it addresses the risk of harm that technology creates for individuals and the environment. In the last two decades, this legislation has come under increasing attack by critics who employ utilitarian philosophy and cost-benefit analysis. The defenders of this body of risk regulation, by contrast, have lacked a similar unifying theory.

                      In this book, the authors propose that the American tradition of philosophical pragmatism fills this vacuum. They argue that pragmatism offers a better method for conceiving of and implementing risk regulation than the economic paradigm favored by its critics. While pragmatism offers a methodology in support of risk regulation as it was originally conceived, it also offers a perspective from which this legislation can be held up to critical appraisal. The authors employ pragmatism to support risk regulation, but pragmatism also leads them to agree with some of the criticisms against it, and even to level new criticisms of their own.

                      In the end, the authors reject the picture—painted by risk regulation’s critics—of widely excessive and irrational regulation, but the pragmatic perspective also leads them to propose a number of recommendations for useful reforms to risk regulation.
