          Book Description

Environmental remediation has brought significant improvements to industrial sites and surrounding communities throughout the nation. It's also become notorious for high budget overruns and frequent schedule delays, as environmental remediation's technological aspects become subject to political, managerial and economic concerns. Modern Project Management (MPM) Processes offer a new framework for remediation programs, geared to increased efficiency and precise troubleshooting. Environmental consultant and certified project management professional (PMP) Timothy J. Havranek has helped various companies put MPM into practice: now, he brings his techniques to the environmental remediation industry at large. Melding traditional project management structure and advanced strategic planning techniques to the needs of environmental remediation, Modern Project Management Techniques for the Environmental Remediation Industry presents this major innovation: a standardized planning process, applicable to all types of remediation projects. Every participant in an environmental remediation effort can mutually benefit from Modern Project Management Techniques for the Environmental Remediation Industry. Environmental consultants will discover precise budget and schedule-planning skills-quite an advantage in their increasingly competitive industry. Customers will also know what to consider when selecting an environmental services company, and discover advanced methods for reducing project costs and durations. MPM: it's bringing new vitality and purpose to environmental protection. Put it into practice with the benefit of Havranek's real-life experience.

Mr. Havranek starts by putting project management in the environmental industry into an historical perspective and proceeds to illustrate how modern project management techniques can be applied within the environmental industry. In an industry that is evolving from reactive mode to thoughtful planning and execution, the book is a primer for project managers.

5 out of 5 stars A perspective from an environmental professional.......2000-02-01

Mr. Havranek's book provides a very complete overview of project management techniques for the environmental remediation professional. He covers all phases of the project management beginning with evaluation of project opportunities and continuing through project team setup, resource management and tracking and project execution. He also presents a unique approach to strategic planning which utilizes quantitative decision analysis techniques. I highly recommend the book as a project management text.

Cormac O Grada unites historical research with economic theory in this original and stimulating book, which will be essential reading for all students of Irish history. Within a broadly chronological framework, Ireland offers a fresh, comprehensive examination of all the well-known puzzles of
Irish economic history including the inevitability of the Famine, the role of land tenure in agricultural backwardness, and the failure of the economy to industrialize. OGrada's account is both accessible, with technical discussion kept to a minimum, and intellectually exciting.

From the supplier: Domino's Pizza Inc of Ann Arbor, MI, raised $110,000 for 132 charitable institutions through its 1992 Christmas Lights Display. The display was a financial liability and a source of bad publicity for the company. However, through the initiative of the company's Hospitality Div staffers Haithem K. Sarafa and R. Scott Lorenz, together with charities and the Ann Arbor community, what was considered a nuisance became the fund raising event of the year. The event not only raised necessary funds, but also fostered cooperation and good relations within the community.

                    Book Description

A much-needed exploration of the New Institutional Economics, or NIE, including a critical assessment of its central theoretical contributions since the field's early beginnings in the 1960s, is this book's objective. It traces the development of major ideas about the genesis and significance of institutions as these ideas have been presented in the NIE. Given the fundamental understanding underlying work in this new area of research--that transactions involve the use of real resources and have costs--the book views the NIE as an amalgam of transaction-cost economics, property-rights analysis, and contract theory.
Efforts are made to explain how the various theoretical strands discussed in the NIE literature fit into the general fabric of modern institutionalism, and how the new concepts put forward can be applied to institutional analysis. Since the new institutionalist approach contrasts sharply with that of the traditional neoclassical model, special attention is given to elucidating the points of difference between the two. And, along these lines, a final chapter deals with the troubling question of whether neoinstitutionalist theory can be advanced by efforts to extend or generalize neoclassical theory.
The book will be essential reading for economists attracted to the NIE approach. In addition, scholars from such disciplines as political science, sociology, and law will find the work useful as the NIE continues to gain wide academic acceptance.
Eirik G. Furubotn is currently serving as Research Associate, University of Texas at Arlington; he recently retired as James L. West Professor of Economics, Texas A&M University. Rudolf Richter is Professor of Economics, Center for the Study of the New Institutional Economics, University of Saarlandes.

Written by two leading authors in the area, this major work explores at length the "new institutional economics." Research in this area has become prominent in the social sciences in the 1980s and 1990s. Addressed largely to academic economists and advanced students, the book covers transaction-cost economics, property-rights analysis, and the theory of contracts. The "new institutional" approach embraced here centers on the key concept of transaction costs. By use of this idea, an attempt is made to explain the nature and role of the organizations and institutions of economic life. The approach is much in the tradition of the work of Nobel Laureate Ronald Coase and his well-known and prolific follower Oliver Williamson.

The book is organized into ten substantial chapters. After an introduction, the work moves on to a second chapter on the pivotal concept of transaction costs. Two chapters on property rights follow, then chapters on contract theory, markets, firms, and the state. A final chapter usefully considers possible future developments of the new institutional paradigm.

The exposition is generally clear and helpful, and the volume is an excellent introduction to the literature of the new institutional economics. Each chapter ends with useful recommendations for further reading. As a comprehensive introduction to a particular type of institutional approach, the book cannot be easily faulted....

Overall, it is a pity that the volume under review did not probe more deeply into the literature on the possible weaknesses of the transaction-cost approach and thereby consider alternative explanations. Nevertheless, the achievements and positive features of the book should not be underestimated. It can be recommended as a comprehensive exploration of the transaction-cost paradigm.

3 out of 5 stars A Collection of Different Views.......2000-03-24

This book contains some theoretic introduction on transaction cost, property rights and contract theory. Market, firm and state are the main topics of the later part of the book. This book is a collection of different views of different economists and political economists. There is little about the authors' view. The analysis is not systematically presented because they have put too much different arguements together in analyzing an issue. One good thing in this book is the reading list it contains.

1 out of 5 stars Poor at best.......2005-02-09

I agree with J.Boot's review - it is obvious that another reviewer on this page is completely biased. Maybe it was their way of getting 'brownie points' for a better grade. ;)
As for the book, the explainations aren't very good, the illustrations confuse the subject, and overall it is a dry, slow read. I think the same regarding the 'Align in the Sand' book, too. The subject matter seems to jump around with little thought to flow, and the overall theme regarding IT/business alignment is a bit too utopian and unrealistic.

                      2 out of 5 stars A Big Yawner.......2004-09-20

The other review of this book is obviously biased, since he studied under the author. This book is dry, poorly formatted, and has terrible illustrations/tables/figures.

For example, the author's discussion of Strategic Alignment Maturity starts off with a figure describing different levels of maturity (okay), followed by text that repeats what the figure shows (uh, okay), followed by MORE figures that expand on the first figure. ??? This is really poor presentation of information.

I bought it for $60 (not cover price of $130) and am disappointed. Frankly, Dilbert does a better job of explaining IT management.

                      5 out of 5 stars A must read!!.......2004-03-01

I got a lot out of the book and found it extremly helpful in my career. So many items can be taken directly from the book and applied to your job.

I was lucky enough to study under Dr. Luftman during the fall of 2003 at Stevens Insititute of Technology in NJ. Dr. Luftman is very insightful and truly understands the needs for aligning Business and IT. Dr. Luftman engages on a regular basis all of the top CIOs in the NYC market. Besides this book, I recommend Dr. Luftmans other book "Align in the Sand". Another great work.

I guarantee after reading the book you will truly understand what it takes to make your IT group a Value Center rather than a Cost center.
