1 out of 5 stars this book is an apologia for the author's mistakes.......2006-11-17

read the much better written and more balanced 'dot bomb' by david kuo for an accurate account of how craig winn, a law school dropout who once sold flyswatters, endeavored to burn through venture capital and turn value america into a smoking crater.

this book is a poorly written rant and oozes desperate self-justification on every page.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2006-04-01

Craig Winn and Ken Power have provided an excellent glimpse into what is really wrong with corporate America. Greed and self promotion seem to permeate those who think they know best how to run a company. Filling one's own pockets at the expense of the employees and the shareholders is why we have had so many major business failures over the past several years. This is an insightfull look into the corporate world, is well written and thoroughly researched. I recommend it to anyone who travels in the corporate world or wants to know what is wrong with the company they work for.

You are a valuable asset for the democratic values and the truth about society and hidden business.

      Outstanding Book.

      5 out of 5 stars Now I know what's killing Corporate America!.......2002-09-17

This book should be mandatory reading for all Corporate executives and especially all boards of directors. It clearly spells out just what must have happened at Enron, Global Crossings, K-Mart, WorldCom, and so many other bankrupt companies. It's the so called "professional" mangement's pocket-lining greed, unchecked by the board which results in spriraling economic sdeath to the companies, the employees, the shareholders and to everyone EXCEPT the managers. Cudos to Power and Winn for an expose' that finially tells it like it is. Everyone can learn from this one.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and an Excellent "Lessons Learned" Account.......2002-05-29

Ken Power et al does an excellent job of turning several years of memories and experiences into a very readable and detailed behind-the-scenes account of what happened with ValueAmeria. For me, the book became a text book on subjects like IPO, private funding, road shows and passing the baton from founder to CEO. The authors balance enough factual detail with colorful background to make the book interesting. I couldn't put it down. Admittedly (and understandably) self-serving in areas, the book provides insight about what all dot.coms experienced - from people who played on the field rather than watched from the bleachers.

This book really made me think. I thought I never would agree with the authors' conclusions, but after looking at those people close to me (father, father-in-law, uncles, friends, etc.) who are no better off now than when they started working in Organizational America 30 years ago, I have to agree.

Can we change before things get worse? Maybe with Hart's & Scott's recommendations and insights (really nothing more than reiterations of what most of us already know and believe) we can!

very enlightening. clarifies what qfd really is and how it should be. the layout though could be further improved so the reader does not have to flip through pages to refer to tables mentioned in the text. also it would've been nice to see examples 100%. i guess this is difficult because of proprietary info. my only regret is that i did not buy this book first, right away.

5 out of 5 stars Best collection of Japanese QFD case studies available........1998-07-06

Dr. Yoji Akao, co-founder of the QFD methodology edits more than 25 QFD case studies from Japanese companies including Toyota, Komatsu, Matsushita, and NEC in industries far ranging from manufactured and assembled products, construction, chemical process, service, and software.

Comprehensive QFD is introduced to forever dispel the mistaken notion in the West that QFD is a House of Quality. The intense detail to other essential deployments such as quality deployment, function deployment, subsystem deployment, reliability deployment, cost deployment, technology deployment, concept development, part deployment, process deployment, QA and QC process sheets are displayed in exacting charts and tables accompanied by explanatory text by the very engineers that headed up the projects.

Mastering the case studies in this book is prerequesite to attaining QFD Master status.

        Book Description

Condon explains key aspects of NAFTA and WTO rules on trade in goods and services, foreign direct investment and intellectual property protection and shows how these rules affect global business strategies. Cases are used to illustrate how these agreements work and how they affect crucial business interests. He examines the political context in which the negotiation and enforcement of trade agreements take place and how business people can enforce the rules and influence the negotiations to support global business strategies. He also shows how NAFTA, WTO, and global business strategy affect some of the major issues of our time, such as AIDS, global security, environmental protection, globalization protesters, and illegal migration from Mexico to the United States. Anyone doing business from, to, and within the NAFTA region will find this essential reading. NAFTA and WTO interact in ways that can make or break a company's strategy. Business strategists must consider the impact of today's rules and how future developments will affect them. However, as Condon makes clear, this book is about more than just business. The globalization of law and business affects the lives of everyone. Scholars, researchers, students, and international business professionals will find the book of value, as will those involved with financial services, international law, and international relations.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Complex Made Clear!.......2002-12-06

Rare indeed is the book that explains global trade regulation simply and clearly. Even rarer is the book that brings the subject to life - making tangible its very real impact on each of our lives. Professor Condon's text achieves both ends. His lucid writing renders a difficult topic accessible. His practice of commencing most chapters with a detailed real-life case study means his reader knows the setting and context for the rules and theory, before being exposed to them. The author then concludes most chapters with a second case study so as to anchor the theory in real trade disputes.

The soporofic effects of most trade regulation texts are notably absent here.

This is an excellent example of the scholarship of integration. Its great contribution lies not in new discoveries but rather in making easily understandable that which so many other authors make obscure and difficult. The author's unremitting commitment to placing his points in the context of real trade disputes brings them to life and allows the reader to appreciate their importance.

The book is primarily focussed upon NAFTA and WTO rules and procedures and is addressed directly to the audience of business people who have to navigate their way through those rules. The first half of the book addresses the global trading system and the trade regimes for goods, services and intellectual property. It then proceeds to analyse foreign investment agreements and to consider strategies in the negotiation and enforcement of trade agreements. Finally the topic of how AIDS, trade and terrorism affect our economic future serves to place the text firmly in the context of contemporary events. It should be noted that this final topic, which constitutes the sub-title of the book, is one chapter in eight. Potential readers should appreciate that the focus of the book is very much on NAFTA and WTO rules and appropriate business strategies to deal with those rules. The sub-title serves to highlight a very interesting and timely chapter in the book, not to elucidate its major themes.

The primary audience for this book comprises two groups. The first are those to whom it is expressly addressed -- business people who trade or engage in direct investment across national boundaries, or those whose businesses are affected by such trade or investment.

The second group are students of law and business. I expect these students will love this book. Students, as a whole, tend to distrust theory and ignore that which they cannot see to be relevant. Professor Condon's unrelenting real world focus leaves no reader with any doubt that this topic really matters, today, in our economy, and in our lives. The clarity of his writing also invites the reader in - one wants to keep reading in part because it is so easy to do so. This book will work better in most classrooms than texts written deliberately for that purpose.

This book will serve practising lawyers who are encountering this field for the first or second time very well. I can think of no better general introduction to the field. But the breadth of its coverage and relative shortness work against it satisfying all the needs of detail-oriented experts. The book also has an understandable North American focus. The author is a Canadian who works in Mexico and NAFTA is one of its major themes. Readers from outside North America may wish for less consistent use of North American examples and case studies. Then again, for such readers who export to or invest in North America, few books explain so clearly the interplay of the NAFTA and WTO regimes and highlight the strategic choices available to business that thereby arise.

This is a particularly timely book. The effects of the September 11 attack are well analysed in the chapter devoted to that and other horrors. The agenda agreed upon in Doha in November 2001 is well integrated throughout the work.

Anyone engaged in international trade or direct investment could not fail to benefit from reading this book, and its lucid and interesting style makes it a comfortable companion on the long flights such business often entails. For those who do such work, or seek through their education to be qualified to do so, it offers a simple, clear and thus precious roadmap to an area that is apt to confuse.

        Book Description

Previous books on the industrialization of America have focused either on the industrial revolution in the first half of the nineteenth century or on the rise of big industry in the second. In this groundbreaking study Licht provides a new perspective by focusing on industrialization first as a product and then as an agent of change. As population expansion and greater market activity fueled manufacture, he explains, industrialization led to greater social and economic developments as well as crises that required a more administered political economic order.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A well-rounded ntroduction to American Industrialization.......2004-04-29

Licht's oft-repeated thesis is that American industrialization is characterized by complexity and diversity, yet he still synthesizes a coherent narrative and argument in his book. Plus, he deftly summarizes (and takes sides in) debates regarding several major questions about U.S. industrialization: Did labor scarcity create more mechanization? Was the late nineteenth century a second industrial revolution? Was what transpired a continuation of earlier initiatives or a fundamental shift?

Licht's book is appropriate for an undergraduate classroom, or a graduate seminar in which a quick introduction to industrialization is needed. It presents the major themes of American industrialization, and has enough teeth to leave room for debate, especially if students are prompted with questions before they begin reading. Licht approaches industrialization from many angles--labor, capital, robber barons, government, craftsmen, factory workers--and gives the reader a solid introduction to the issues. Instead of footnotes, the book concludes with a strong bibliograpic essay for each chapter. The book is not intended for advanced scholars of industrialization, but some specialists may find Lichts reframing of American industrialization in a social history lens useful. I did.

Most succinct summarizing quote: "Complexity and diversity marked the whole process of industrialization. The growth of manufacture occurred in different countries, regions within countries, and trades in a remarkably uneven fashion; the timing and pace of change varied widely, as did choices of technology and managerial arrangements. Industrialization destroyed certain skills and occupations but created others; the process similarly generated both small- and large-scale enterprise. In the United States, agricultural expansion, not contraction, accompanied industrial development; professional, clerical, and service sector employment grew alongside." (21)

3 out of 5 stars Good Information and Analysis, Bad Writing.......2001-06-02

This book was required reading for my AP US History course, so naturally I didn't want to read it anyways. Unfortunately, I also had to write a report on the book so I was stuck. This book is packed full of nonstop information with the occasional analysis of facts. It moves very slowly stating so many facts that it is simply a boring book to read. As I usually am an avid reader, this says a lot. However, if you want to know all the informartion there is about the Industrial Revolution, this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars The Ongoing Regurgitaion of Historical Dross.......1999-12-22

I had to read this book for an advanced history class. If you want a good text book for the nineteenth century, this is your guide. But for anything but an index for the industrial revolution, this book is no different than reading binary code. It is a long string of useless facts about things minutely interesting or important to this time period. Granted, it does have some good information, and I applaud the author for his tenacity on sticking to writing this ticking brain tumor, this book is about as fun and interesting as poking myself with something rusty.

Does it bring employees and managers closer together or cause strife? These are some questions answered in the new Oxford series, The Learning History Library. Each book gets inside a company at a crucial time of change, offering a unique opportunity to see innovation from the inside out. Created and edited by George Roth and Art Kleiner, the learning history library uses an imaginative format to shape and narrate a story of major intro-firm transition.
