    Product Description

Any serious book collector (and the most serious belong to The Grolier Club, that pre-eminent New York shrine) harbors a latent penchant for lists.

These lists are usually generated in neat doses of one hundred titles. Here then (at least in the opinions of Messrs. Hutner and Kelly) are the hundred greatest printed books of the twentieth century. Given another pair of editors, you d probably be offered a different list, but this one serves and serves well, for it concentrates not only on the recognized chestnuts, but also lesser-known, and often exceedingly récherché volumes that have left their mark. It is noteworthy that only two books in the survey were printed by offset; the rest are all letterpress. And although America is strongly represented, there are also selections from Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Wales and Switzerland. Every book is illustrated in fine line duotone, many in color, and best of all, the captions that accompanied the original Grolier exhibit have been transcribed intact. In their two prefatory essays, Hutner has provided a convincing defense of his choices (1900 1948), and Kelly, a spirited apologia for his (1949 1999).

Joe Blumenthal ended his survey of fine printing in America with the observation that the art of the book, one of the slender graces of civilization, works its charm on each new generation. This survey, while admittedly neither comprehensive nor definitive, provides an excellent overview of fine printing over the past hundred years. Despite Morison s contention that typography is the most conservative of all the arts, the form of the book continues to mutate, evolve, and advance. If we are to overcome the complexities of a digital age, we would do well to appreciate, if not embrace, that heritage.

                          Book Description

This book follows four successful friends who met in graduate school while pursuing their MBAs. Now they meet for a monthly golf outing to continue their friendship, discuss their careers, and compete in a friendly golf game for the price of dinner. The challenges they face in business and in their personal lives are all too familiar. Golf provides an intriguing metaphor for the game of life, with its complexities and challenges, changing conditions, chances for creativity, penalties, and rewards. Moreover, golf is the game most often associated with business. As Hank, Jorge, Wayne, and Zack share their experiences and pursuit of improvement in Wisdom on the Green, they discover powerful new insights that help them see how they can improve their games, both in business and in golf.

This book will focus on the implementation of Six Sigma as a business strategy. Part of this strategy will include the integration of the Lean Enterprise philosophy with that of Six Sigma. We will also discuss ISO-9000:2000, Malcolm Baldrige Assessments, Total Quality Management (TQM), Balanced Scorecard, and Theory of Constraints (TOC).

For implementation of Six Sigma, we will describe our strategy, which we call Smarter Six Sigma SolutionsSM, or S4 SM. This step-by-step roadmap has evolved over the years within the training and coaching sessions conducted by Smarter SolutionsSM, Inc. An initial roadmap for this methodology is described in Implementing Six Sigma1 and Managing Six Sigma2.

The Smarter Six Sigma Solutions strategy calls the highest-level measurement a Satellite-LevelSM Metric, which is for tracking the high-level business measures to which Six Sigma projects are aligned. This approach also uses 30,000-Foot-LevelSM Metrics to track Key Process Output variables (KPOVs) of projects. These metrics are useful for establishing a baseline for Six Sigma projects, detecting when project change has occurred, and giving a high-level control measure that can monitor overall process change during and after a project is completed. To make improvements, focus is given within Six Sigma projects to identifying one or more Key Process Input Variables (KPIVs) that affect the KPOV variable. With the S4 approach, many KPIVs are referred to as 50-Foot-LevelSM Metrics, which are used to control the KPOV(s).

The mathematical relationship Y=f(x) is sometimes used within Six Sigma training to represent the principle that in a system, outputs are a function of inputs. In Six Sigma terms: KPOV=f(KPIV).

Some how-tos will be included within this book; however, we will reference other books, articles, and websites that give more in-depth descriptions of implementation.

The glossary elaborates on both technical and golfing terms used within the book that may not be familiar to all readers.

I just finished reading these two books [Wisdom on the Green and Lean Six Sigma] and having been involved with Lean Six Sigma for several years, I wish that I had these books when I went through my Black Belt training program. One point that kept hitting me is that while the process for selecting projects is so critical - I realized that it remains a weak link in most lean improvement process chains.

These books reminded me of "The Goal" and I enjoyed your books so much that I read them both within the past two weeks. I actually had a hard time putting the "Wisdom on the Green" down and read it during the past three evenings.

We all need a sensei like "Jorge Santos" and I thank-you for creating him.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Read.......2004-03-07

I didn't know much about either Six Sigma or golf, but this book presented Six Sigma in a way that I could understand it. The golf lesssons were interesting without getting me lost in the terms. This is not a book for someone looking for Six Sigma certification. It is a book for that person's boss, who won't have the time or inclination to read the massive volume that the practitioner needs.

                          1 out of 5 stars Keep looking!.......2003-05-08

This book provided no useful information about 6 sigma. The content of the book could be distilled into a single paragraph, at most. I am a chemical engineer, and I am working on my MBA. I bought this book because I am looking to become six sigma certified as well. This book was no help. It mentioned 4 or 5 terms that I am well acquainted with, like DOE's, but it didn't explain them at all. Plus, the book presented through a boring narrative.

5 out of 5 stars good to read for executives.......2002-10-29

Well written , simple and progressively depicts the use and implementation of six sigma to solve chronic problems. Woods should buy it to eliminate special cause problems.

5 out of 5 stars Working smarter than before.......2002-10-22

"Wisdom on the Green" uses narrative to express how you can use the Six Sigma methodology to change your organization from one of regular mediocrity to one of excellence. If you are doing the same thing day after day and expecting the result to be better, take a look here and discover how to work smarter. It effectively explains the essence of Six Sigma, shows its universal applicability, and reveals its power to transform an organization. Even if you are not a golfer, don't be turned off by the golfing context. It is used just enough to illustrate the Six Sigma principles and show how they can be applied to any activity.

                              Book Description

Competitive Governments systematically explores the hypothesis that governments are internally competitive, that they are competitive in their relations with each other and in their relations with other institutions in society which, like them, supply consuming households with goods and services. Breton contends that competition not only serves to bring the political system to an equilibrium, but it also leads to a revelation of the households' true demand functions for publicly provided goods and services and to the molding of a link between the quantities and the qualities demanded and supplied and the tax prices paid for these goods and services.

I have had the misfortune of attending some of "MAX_HOLES" sessions. Talk about a pompous clown baffoon. This book is a series of macho male ramblings trying to disguse itself as a sales manual. MAX can you spell "proof read." Does this person grasp that he is offensive with his inane war stories... that are totally irrelevant...
Don't bother with this losser...or his "book."

I was almost stunned to find a book focused specifically on Telcom Sales. Phillip understands the telcom industry because of his many years of hands on experience. This hands on experience is what makes his opinions so valuable. I would recommend this book for any person regardless of experience in the industry. This book would obviously be helpful for the rookie saleperson but I believe even the veterans would find or be reminded of useful information as well. He includes examples and scripts for each step of the sales cycle. You will not be disappointed in your purchase of this book. I also purchased his tape series which are great for all the windshield time we salespeople experience. His tapes can be purchased through his website which is listed in his book.

I have read a lot of "vanilla" books on the Internet and technology. This is the first book with some excitement to it and some very interesting issues addressed by these CTOs. A great book for both techies and business executives....
