Donna Garner, English and Spanish teacher

Bring the English language to life with this valuable new resource!

Some say that learning a second language is like drinking water from a fire hose. But teaching it does not have to be like standing under Niagara Falls. This is the fundamental message of Jerry Jesness’ new quick-start guide Teaching English Language Learners K-12. In our climate, ESL teachers face immense demands as educators because the ESL class is often the critical, transitional step into a student’s entire education. The author provides specific strategies to address the special challenges for instructors. This valuable resource offers a terrific framework to nurture that motivating spark in ESL learners. For ESL educators, it’s more than a job—it’s a mission!

3 out of 5 stars Teaching English Language Learners k-12: A Quick start Guide for the New Teacherr.......2006-11-11

I took a coarse through Ottawa University. English Language Learners this text book was the teacherrs book of choice. During this class we read every chapter, reviewed it in the class and did presentations about each chapter to further our understanding of the text. The concepts presented in the book
were concepts and processes and methods that I have been using in my classroom for years. I did not learn any new processes or ideas as to how to present ideas to my classes. This text did reinforce that the methods and materials that I teach are very appropriate. The teacher had stated that the ideas in this text were tested and proven to be very effective in the classroom with English Language learners. And that the same methods were excellent for teaching any type of student in the multilearner classroom that all teachers are faced with today.

5 out of 5 stars It sure seves its purpose........2006-03-19

As this book claims to be, it will give a guick-start for the new teacher in teaching ESL. It generally touches all the issues that an ESL teacher could think of. It offers quite helpful tips for the teacher of adult learners of English as well as younger learners.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quick start for teachers in an ESL role.......2005-12-14

This book was an excellent cut-to-the-chase guide for a teacher shoved into an ESL role who needs to get up to speed quickly. His approach to teaching recognizes the pressures, hurdles and difficulties that many teachers face when placed in this role.

      5 out of 5 stars Useful & Thought-Provoking.......2005-09-01

I thought both his philosophy of teaching and his technique to be useful and thought-provoking.

1 out of 5 stars This book is awful!.......2005-08-17

I was assigned to read this book for an education course this summer. The title would suggest that this book would be very useful for new and inexperienced teachers. I was extremely disappointed. Jesness rarely, if ever, explains the research behind his opinions in this book. [...]. He makes huge generalizations and gives an erroneous lesson plan trying to use the SIOP model. The worst moment in the book is where he says that ESL teachers would be justified to just teach English to English Language Learners and not teach the content areas, despite the fact that all ELLs are required to take content area exams under NCLB. There is so much rich literature to help teachers instruct ELLs, but this book is neither rich nor useful. I would highly recommend NOT reading this book.

                      Book Description

                      H. L. Goodall’s ground-breaking study of what people do with symbols and what symbols do to people explores the lives led by people in organizations. His narratives take on the form of six detective mysteries in which the narrator figures into the plot of the intrigue and then works out its essential patterns.

In the first mystery, "Notes on a Cultural Evolution: The Remaking of a Software Company," Goodall looks at the transition of a Huntsville regional office of a Boston-based computer software company where the lives and social dramas of the participants reflect the current state of high technology.

The second essay and perhaps the most insightful, "The Way the World Ends: Inside Star Wars," penetrates the various defenses of the Star Wars command office in Huntsville to discover its secrets and surprises. Goodall shows how media, technology, fear of relationships, and symbolic images of the future unite into the day-to-day operations of people who believe they are responsible for the outer limits of our nation’s defense.

"Lost in Space: The Layers of Illusion Called Adult Space Camp" illustrates how a supposedly innocent theme park invites participation in rituals and ceremonies designed to influence a future generation of taxpayers.

In "Articles of Faith," Goodall enters a super mall in Huntsville, noting how shopping centers provide consumers with far more than places to purchase goods and services.

"How I Spent My Summer Vacation" finds Goodall back in an academic environment, at a conference of communication scholars, where he demonstrates the difficult task of translating cultural understandings from one context to another.

"The Consultant as Organizational Detective" offers the sobering message that real-life mysteries may surprise even the most accomplished sleuth. A concluding chapter, "Notes on Method," and a new autobiographical afterword round out Goodall’s penetrating look at our symbol-making culture.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Counts .......2006-08-06

Casing the Promised Land by H.L. Goodall, Jr. (the first in an ethnographic trilogy) is an interpretive ethnography that consists of a collection of stories over the course of eight years (and written up in two) that seeks to construct a perspective (not to be confused with Truth) in a larger effort to encourage discussion and debate (particularly) among academics who usually have clear ideas about what `science' is or should be (e.g. this debate is especially apparent among the quantitative/qualitative divide).

This collection of essays frames ethnographic organizational `mysteries' focusing on communication scholarship within the context of personal experience as researcher. Goodall weaves together a strand of multiple narratives as researcher and ethnographer, husband, professor, etc., that collectively constitute an `experience,' albeit an experience that in its totality can never actually be fully understood or even known (which is precisely the point). The experiences chronicled in this text spotlight the poetics of humans communicating but also highlight the space outside where meaningful communication takes place that cannot necessarily be accounted for.

Here Goodall, an authority on rhetoric and communication, seeks to complicate our thinking about organizational communication and technology especially in the rural South as well as make a case for the importance of interpretive ethnography in the academy. Goodall makes no qualms about his general dissatisfaction with the social sciences and much to his credit this book highlights through storytelling the great necessity for ethnographic research as well as noting the limitations and shortcomings that often result, a point few positivists are willing to concede. It is within this space that we can learn to be better researchers, writers, intellectuals and human beings so to test the general shortcomings of growth and creativity that we all no doubt experience. Stated otherwise, we as academics are not nor should be confined by the limits of a particular research design or methodology that all too often seems to thwart our creativity (although not our promotion to tenure) in so many ways.

This text provides the researcher with yet another way of doing research differently outside of the constraints of the establishment. This book was very entertaining and highly recommended for both the novice and the seasoned researcher.

                      Book Description

In this total update of his classic, quality guru Philip Crosby revisits and ultimately reaffirms the thinking he introduced in the tradition-shattering Quality is Free. In that volume, he took quality precepts learned at ITT and adapted in his great entrepreneurial experiment, Philip Crosby Associates (PCA), and rolled them out for the business world's lasting benefit. Now, after 16 years of intense change in one of the hottest areas of business, he shares his current thoughts on some of his most enduring contributions.

3 out of 5 stars Business life story under misleading title.......2001-05-23

Some people who read 'Quality Is Free' observed that the title is somewhat misleading (because it oversimplifies the real message). This book's title is definitely misleading, because it suggests that the book is an update to "Quality Is Free'. This, however, is not at all the case - this book does not have anything to do with "QIF", except the author and his general attitude towards quality (which is quite convincing, however).

"Still Free" is just an account of Crosby's career from his earliest work experiences, through ITT to his own quality consulting firm. The focus, however, is almost always on quality philosophy and implementation, rather than personal matters - they are touched on only to illustrate the professional aspects. Generally, it is a good account but I doubt that this is a reasonable form of explaining author's quality philosophy because it's intrinsically simple and intuitive; as far as can be seen from the book, it has not evolved much over years of its application by the author. This being the case, it is not worth explaining in this particular form.

The book would be more valuable if it were written before "Quality Is Free", not after. Maybe they should be read in this order; doing it the other way round does not seem to be very useful.

An advantage of this book over "QIF" is its language: much more clear and readable. All in all, it may be worth reading if you only want to get a general idea of Crosby's quality concept. If you need a program for actions, better read "QIF".

                            Book Description

The old business process paradigms wrought by the Industrial Revolution are no longer tenable. TQM, continuous improvement, and other "revolutionary" new models that have arisen to take their place over the past several decades have proven to be stopgap measures at best. Yet, one undeniable truth has emerged from all these noble experiments: to survive in today's global marketplace, a company must perform like a world class competitor. Survival in the new world business order requires a clear understanding of changing customer needs coupled with the ability to translate those needs quickly and efficiently into products or services.

Achieving the Competitive Edge—a comprehensive guide for businesses large and small—offers a coherent, well-structured approach to becoming a world class competitor. Developed by the authors during their many years as consultants to industry and government, the approach draws upon the best ideas and methodologies from a variety of business process/management models and fuses them into a set of easy-to-implement practical procedures.

Short on theory and long on hands-on guidance, Achieving the Competitive Edge introduces managers and engineers to the best management tools currently used in industry. The authors carefully analyze each tool in light of today's volatile global business environment and show you how to apply it successfully to solve day-to-day problems. Since the emphasis throughout the book is on strengthening the company from the inside, Harry K. Jackson, Jr., and Normand L. Frigon devote considerable attention to a wide range of tools for analyzing and improving quality and competitiveness.

The authors impart a working understanding of tools and concepts through the device of an extended real-world example. Drawn from the authors' own files, this case study provides a unique opportunity to see concepts, techniques, and tools in action, and to assess the advantages and disadvantages of each. More than 90 easy-to-read charts and tables help you absorb the theory and develop a feel for the techniques.

In today's global marketplace, every company must think and perform like a world class competitor. Achieving the Competitive Edge helps you make world class performance a reality in your organization.

Advance Praise for Achieving the Competitive Edge.

"Achieving the Competitive Edge is an outstanding reference source for ensuring continuous measurable improvement and the ability to compete in today's business environment."— William O. Grimes, Senior Member, Technical Staff, Texas Instruments, Inc.

"As someone with the responsibility to operate a business on a daily basis, I appreciate the direct, commonsense approach and business language of this book. One of the distinct strengths is that I can actually use it directly in the operation of my business. The authors understand my management and quality needs and provide a guide on how to do it.The first book of its type that recommends a specific approach to planning, then guides me through the implementation of the planning process business." —Thomas G. Dacus, Vice President, Scitronix.

"Achieving the Competitive Edge: A Practical Guide to World Class Competition is easy to understand and free of jargon. It provides a much needed, step-by-step guide to essential elements required in any business strategy for the '90s and beyond. If your business competes in the world marketplace, Jackson and Frigon's book is required reading."— Paul A. Baltes, Director, Engineering Professional Development, University of Arizona.

"In Achieving the Competitive Edge the authors have compiled a valuable source of work of the tools managers and workers must be able to employ to make their companies competitive in the new global economy. It presents a good, clear explanation of how quality process and management tools are used."— Philip L. McIndoo, Senior Vice President, The Mitre Corporation.

                              Book Description

Famous Fables of Economics critiques some of our most cherished stories of market failure. Economists have used these colorful myths to justify a wide range of public policy interventions in the economy: public provision of goods and services, economic regulation of industry and antitrust actions against major corporations. Despite their blatant factual inaccuracies, the appeal of these fables to economic, law, and management academics continues undiminished - the fables are persistently repeated in countless classrooms, textbooks, and academic seminars.Among the fables critiqued here are the lighthouse, the keyboard, the bees and the orchard, General Motors' acquisition of Fisher Body, the Liberty Ships and the learning curve, predatory pricing and tulip mania. This provocative book explores the mythical nature of some of economists' favorite stories and raises fundamental questions about the role of the government in society. It provides an intriguing look at economic thought that is accessible to general readers, students, professionals, and academics. These articles suggest that economic analysis of market efficiency should rely on systematic study of institutions and transaction costs rather than on casual anecdotes.

                                Book Description

In this third edition of their classic study of the political commercial, or "polispot," veteran media analysts Edwin Diamond and Stephen Bates reveal the backstage stories of the 1988 presidential campaign - the Ailes-Atwater media mastery, the Dukakis team's babel of TV voices, Willie Horton's transformation from convict to celebrity. The authors take a close critical look at the key political ads of 1988 and 1990, with particular attention to the subtexts directed at voters' racial attitudes and fears. They also preview the 30-second arguments and attacks of the 1992 media campaign.

In a new chapter, Diamond and Bates examine the case against spots. They take a hard look at the societal ills that critics have blamed on TV campaigns, including mudslinging, misrepresentation, and malaise. They evaluate the proposals to ban or severely restrict the spot. They also assess the growing press scrutiny of TV campaigns, such as the use of "truth boxes" in newspapers. Their verdict on political ads will surprise many viewers - and cheer all friends of the First Amendment.

As the media consultants and their handiwork grow more subtle and sophisticated, and as political campaigns increasingly exist only on the home screen, The Spot is an indispensable guide for the campaign season.

Edwin Diamond is Professor of journalism at New York University, where he directs the News Study Group, and he is the media columnist for New York Magazine. His previous books include The Media Show: The Changing Face of the News, 1985-1990. Stephen Bates, a lawyer, is a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. The second edition of this successful book addresses how technologies evolve and how they drive the need for organizational change and adaptation. Focusing on the general-management challenges that innovative firms face, the editors draw from a variety of disciplines and demonstrate the links between innovation, organizational competencies, organizational architectures, executive teams, and managing change.

What we have here is an anthology of 42 articles that, collectively, examine a wide range of strategies and tactics for effective management of innovation as an organizational problem, not merely a technical problem. As co-editors Michael Tushman and Philip Anderson suggest in the Preface, "bringing an innovation to market involves more than creating something new. It is a strategic challenge because innovations succeed when they reach the right market at the right time with the right competitive positioning. It requires the management of change because innovations succeed when new ways of operating are aligned with new value propositions." I should add that Tushman and Anderson are also among the contributors. Others include Clayton Christensen, Stephen Jay Gould, Jim Collins, Jerry Porras, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Charles O'Reilly III, John Seely Brown, and Henry Chesbrough.

Although the book was written primarily for use in business school courses, carefully selected portions of the material will also be of substantial interest and value to countless others (e.g. C-level executives) who are charged with determining how their own organization can most effectively respond to the perils and opportunities of change and innovation. It remains for each decision-maker to determine which articles are of greatest relevant to her or his organization.

The 42 readings are carefully organized within seven sections. Of greatest interest to me are Section V ("Knowledge, Learning, and Intellectual Capital") because its contributors explore the problem of accelerating the rate at which an organization generates and deploys knowledge, and, Section VII (""Executive Leadership and Managing Innovation and Change") because its contributors explore focus on the essential organizational component that galvanizes all others: leadership. Here are two brief excerpts that correctly indicate the quality of content that is consistent throughout all of the articles.

On why so many strong, capably managed firms stumble when faced with particular types of technological change: "While many scholars see the issue primarily as an issue of [begin italics] technological competence [end italics], we assert that at a deeper level; it may be an issue of [begin italics] investment [end italics]. We have observed that when competence was lacking but impetus from customers to develop that competence was sufficiently strong, established firms successfully led their industries in developing the competencies required for sustaining technological change. Importantly because sustaining technologies address the interests of established firms' existing customers, we saw that technological change could be achieved without strategy change." Clayton M. Christensen and Joseph L. Bower, "Customer Power, Strategic Investment, and the Failure of Leading Firms"

On building a culture that supports constant mindfulness and experimentation: "It isn't sufficient to generate new ideas now and then. Your company - or more likely a part of it - needs to be a place that generates and tests many disparate ideas. It should be an arena, a constant and constructive contest, where the best ideas win. Will these ideas about innovation ever look anything but weird to the majority of managers? Probably not, because most companies will always devote more time, people, and money to exploiting old ideas than to exploring new ones. Exposure effects being what they are, managing for creativity will always require a conscious effort. However, if you read `Dilbert' or have friends in the arts, you know that exposure effects cut both ways. To people who spend their days doing creative work, the way that most companies are managed seems just as weird." Robert I. Sutton, "The Weird Rules of Creativity"

This book shows the links among innovation, organizational architecture, executive teams, and managing change. The 41 articles that are included in this book have been carefully chosen from the current literature, with an introductory essay by the authors in which they show how the diagnostic model is applied to the problem of managing innovation. In the introductory essay, the authors highlight themes recurring throughout the book, such as the systems nature of technology, the importance of history and path dependence, the cross-functional nature of innovation management, the paradox between efficiency and adaptability, and the role of executive leadership in managing through turbulence. The introduction provides a helpful road map that offers a coherent rationale for studying innovation management. All modules in the book have editorial introductions that help to reinforce the links among technology, organizational architectures, and executive and managing teams. Introductions are also included for each chapter, explaining the fundamental point each reading raises and how it is integrated within the rest of the book. Managing Strategic Innovation and Change also features readings on topics including technological evolution, technology strategy, globalization, and organizational learning, offering a complete set of readings on the management of innovation.

                                          Book Description

Rational Risk Policy is based on Viscusi's Arne Ryde Memorial Lectures, delivered at Lund University in 1996. The organizing principle of these lectures is that the irrationality of individual decisions is often embodied in government regulations. Rather than overcoming the inadequacies in individual risk beliefs and behaviour, governmental regulations often institutionalize them. Viscusi examines how consumers and workers perceive risk and the implications of these risk beliefs and behavioural responses to risk for government policy. Hazard warnings efforts, direct regulation, and liability are among the alternative modes of intervention. The role of risk tradeoffs with respect to the value of life as well as the consequences of wasteful regulatory expenditures are considered in a discussion of riskrisk analysis. Rational Risk Policy also includes a critique of the risk analysis practices used by government agencies as well as a consideration of how liability and social insurance should be integrated into a rational risk management strategy.
