It's a tough market these days for network consultants, but the one commodity there's lots of is fear. There's loads of stuff to be scared of. Which means that canny network experts can get some work by offering to protect computer networks from unauthorized access. It's best to earn a certification before you go touting yourself for work, though. Cisco Systems' Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA) rating is a good vendor-specific one, and is sure to help get you in the door for security work at places with lots of Cisco equipment. CCSP Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced Exam Certification Guide brings you up to speed on the PIX firewall line, with emphasis on the coverage of the CSPFA exam.Like the other books in the Cisco Press certification line, this one reads like an instructor's lecture, albeit frequently supplemented by reference material (command documentation, for example). The authors begin with material that should be familiar to a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or anyone else with basic network grounding, and build from there into the more specialized areas of VPNs, NAT, and access-control lists as they pertain to PIX environments. As always, you'll learn more if you have a testbed PIX firewall on which to try the procedures that appear in the text (the companion CD-ROM holds no simulator, only a quiz program), but this book gives test candidate a great base from which to work. --David Wall
Topics covered: The stated objectives of the two CSPFA exams, one of which candidates must pass in order to earn the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA) certification. The two exams are 9E0-111 (soon to be retired) and 642-521. Coverage includes PIX firewall installation and configuration, as well as techniques for adding such services as remote access management, virtual private networks (VPNs), network address translation (NAT, and accounting features.
Book Description
Official self-study test preparation guide for the Cisco CSPFA 642-521 exam
Coverage of the CSPFA topics enables you to fill your knowledge gaps before the exam date. You'll learn about:
Becoming a CCSP distinguishes you as part of an exclusive group of experts, ready to take on today's most challenging security tasks. Administration of the Cisco PIX Firewall is a difficult and complex task, critical for protecting a network. Whether you are seeking a PIX-focused certification or the full-fledged CCSP certification, learning what you need to know to pass the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA) exam will qualify you to keep your company's network safe while meeting business needs.
Each chapter of the CCSP Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition, tests your knowledge of the exam subjects through features such as quizzes, sections that detail exam topics to master, and summary sections that highlight essential subjects for quick reference and review. Because experienced IT professionals agree that the most demanding portion of their jobs is troubleshooting, the final section of this book includes scenarios dedicated to troubleshooting Cisco PIX Firewall configuration. This includes a description of the problem, a portion of the system configuration, debug output, and suggestions to help you resolve the issue. The companion CD-ROM's customizable testing engine enables you to take practice exams that mimic the real testing environment, focus on particular topic areas, randomize answers for reusability, track your progress, and refer to the electronic text for review.

Customer Reviews:
This book was worthless..........2005-04-21
Fair at best, very poor practice exam.......2004-04-12
Example: What kind of protocol is easiest to spoof?
Possible answers: UDP, TCP, ICMP, All protocols, or DNS
The "correct" answer is "TCP is the more difficult to spoof..."
I've found a few other errors, making the practice test virtually useless. In the example, the given answer is correct for a different question. In some cases, the answer is actually wrong for the question.
I'm disappointed that an "official" study guide from Cisco Press has so many issues.
Don't waste your time.......2004-03-05
At best it's a waste of money, at worst it will give you a false sense of what is required for the exam.
Incomplete and Replete with Errors.......2004-02-17
Even the accompanying practice exam was flawed. About 10 minutes into it I got a question whose "correct" answer logically contradicted the parameters of question itself. I'll never know how good or bad the remainder of the exam was, because I immediately uninstalled the program in disgust.
My biggest complaint, however, is that too much material covered on the exam is missing from the book. Sure, the book will get you throught he basics of setting up a PIX firewall, but topics such as the Firewall Services Module, the CiscoWorks Firewall Management Console, and the Auto Update Server are conspicuously absent. And these topics were prevalent on the exam.
With that said, I did pass the exam on the first attempt. But it was thanks to some of the other practice exams and source materials that I was able to make up for the deficiencies and errors in this book. Had I taken this book as gospel, I have no doubt that I would have failed.
I need these study guide books to get me through the CCSP certification, but I am certainly going to avoid anything else by these two authors if possible. Frankly, I'm not sure they understand how some of these technologies (e.g., VPN protocols) really work. They certainly haven't explained them well to me.
Fair Reference... Poor Study Guide.......2004-01-19
If you have no experience with a Cisco PIX this book is a good start. It can help you select the proper model for your needs. Each model has different features that may or may not be important to your use. The differences are outline in a model by model summary followed by a complete comparison chart of the all the models.
Once you select your model you will need the basics to get going. The authors do a great job of covering the commands that you will need to get started. Examples highlight the usage, which helps when there are multiple arguments available for a single command.
As you progress through the book the subject matter increases in complexity, but the authors keep you informed. Cicso has built in the power to their operating system, but unleashing that power needs some explaining. The advanced commands are helpful since there are times when difficult configurations push us to the test. Having the insight to the power and proper use of certain commands and configurations help us overcome these obstacles.
I was impressed with the scenarios provided in the end. I like the way that the authors challenged me with their configurations and tested my skill and understanding. Their explanations have helped me to reconsider and change my configuration and setup to provide for a more secure network, which is something that we all need these days.
On the book's negative side I found quite a few errors in spelling and grammar. It seems to have been poorly proofread. I found the word "network" spelled "netowrk." How does that get by? My spellchecker corrected it for me, but somehow this made it passed the spellchecker used by the authors and was not caught by the proofreaders.
There are a few sections where I found some copy and paste errors. For example in the section regarding the Cisco 520, the body text reads "Cisco 515" in error. This leads to some confusion if you are not alert. It could easily lead you to believe the Cisco 515 can function the same as a Cisco 520, which is not always the case.
Another annoyance is the fact that some of the figures in the book do not use the same IP scheme as what is written in the text. It is as if the scenario or configuration was written and the figure was not updated to correspond, or vise versa. This makes it a little hard to follow along. I found it easier to correct the figure with a pen then to change the text.
Overall I feel that the book is a good reference guide, but does not make the cut for a study guide. There are too many errors that are distractions while studying. I should not need to hold a pen in my hand as I read along to make corrections. That is the job of proofreading.

This book will teach you how benchmarking is used to improve performance, set quality objectives, and identify and adapt to best processes. Most of us routinely use benchmarking--to measure, match, compare, evaluate--all to establish a standard of what we believe is best. However, the critical elements of our customers' expectations and requirements are often missing. This book adds those elements into the process, and demonstrates six other types of benchmarking, while helping you decide which method will suit your needs.Customer Reviews:

Most pragmatic approach to high-tech marketing there is.......2002-11-19
Eureka! I've found a really useful Marketing & Sales Book.......2002-02-16
This is a path-breaking and landmark publication for any organization interested in enhancing their marketing endeavors in order to attain faster and better results. It is the first time that as a reader I felt truly engaged in an interactive process with the authors. They asked me to answer 15 questions and calculate a score. As a test of repeatability, I asked my marketing colleague within our institution to do the same, and she obtained independently the exact same score (2.2) which placed us clearly in the Solutions Phase II quadrant of the Service Lifecycle. From there it was a simple matter to go to the templates on pp. 115-129 to obtain a ready-to-implement immediately set of vital, mission critical marketing and sales tactics.
Having read many marketing books, this is the first one that began to approach a scientific paradigm for me. It contains plausible and reasonable theoretical models for several realistic, empirically based situations-e.g., products vs. services. It definitely has a high-tech spin, but I believe it has wider and more general relevance and application opportunities.
For the layperson I think the next edition of this book could be enhanced by including a definitive glossary of important marketing terms (jargon) at the back of the book. I found myself seeking clarification of exact connotations of "parity plus one," "customer touch points," and so forth.
Overall, buying and perusing this book which only recently (January 2002) became widely available is a high value-added proposition where the probable returns are orders of magnitude greater than the modest purchase price. I can't help but wonder how many failed companies could and should have been saved if they truly understood and applied the revolutionary content contained in this short (159 pp.) eye-opener. I recommend it without qualification to anyone and everyone who has ever been puzzled by the marketing maze.
Perpetual Marketing is a comforting North Star with associated, detailed charts to make it easier to navigate the dangerous waters of today's dynamic global marketplace with more confidence and less fear of the unknown.

Cooperative Commonwealth: Co-Ops in Rural Minnesota, 1859-1939

Customer Reviews:
Cooperative Commonwealth.......2001-03-17
The earliest attempts at establishing union stores failed in part due to inexperience but also because their scope was too broad. But in time farmers learned that the more specific their objectives, the more likely they succeeded. Creameries were the first resounding success. A creamery was established at a crossroads that served local farmers and was soon followed by a store and church. This hamlet seemed to provide all the local farmers needed. Fire insurance mutuals and wheat elevators soon imitated the creamery example. Railroads attempted to piggyback onto successful grain elevators, but farmer control many times prevailed. Farmer movements such as the Grange and Farmers Alliance aided co-op development, but were not instrumental. The fact that co-ops outlived national agrarian movements says more for the local institutions than for national organization. Co-ops eventually bloomed into full-fledged corporate entities such as Land O' Lakes and CENEX. These organizations played important roles in Minnesota politics.
Keillor's book is well written, though the reader will encounter a myriad of acronyms that are seemingly unavoidable. Keillor's writing style can be difficult to follow at times, but he manages to regain the reader's attention often enough so not to spoil the book. The primary issue with the book is its reliance on a handful of sources.
There are specific examples Keillor puts forth to illustrate his points, but perceived generalizations lead the reader to wonder if these examples were true representation across the state. To emphasize his point on anti-county set politics, Keillor points out that the county seats of Yellow Medicine, Brown, and Otter Tail counties came under fire by co-ops because their seats were not centrally located within the counties. However, none of the seats were moved in response. Also, were there anti-county seat movements of co-ops in counties where the seat was centrally located? Keillor does not say. He also uses Freeborn County as his case history for cooperative creameries. But did the same circumstances happen in other counties? By design the book intentionally omitted data from counties where other economic endeavors outpaced agriculture, but many agricultural counties were neglected as well. There is no mention of Stearns, Houston, Nobles, Jackson, Chippewa, Cottonwood, or two dozen other agricultural counties. What are their stories?
One final flaw concerns the last two chapters. Up until these chapters, the primary focus was on the farmers, not the politicians. But by the end of the book, Keillor's emphasis is entirely on the governors and legislators and how they interacted with federal programs of the New Deal such as the Rural Electrification Administration. Farmers become role players in their own economic development.
But there is much to be learned from this important historical work. Keillor sets the stage for future scholarship to either prove or disprove his thesis, and given the extensiveness of Minnesota Historical Society collections, there is plenty of opportunity to expand on the work started here.

Book Description
During the latter half of the nineteenth century, a number of `social philosophers' gained pre-eminence throughout North America and Europe for their writings and speeches, Henry George being one of the best known; often referred to as `progressivists', they sought to expose the established and growing socio-economic iniquities that were the result of swift industrialisatio, and called for a new political ecomony and social order. This book, the first in a trilogy, examines the basics of Henry George's political and social philosophy. Through careful and exhaustive research into George's original works (including Progress and Poverty, Our Land and Land Policy and articles in the Standard), the editor has compiled in one volume the essentials required for a clear and comprehensive understanding of Henry George's thinking. This final volume in the Henry George Centennial Trilogy comprises selections from the works of distinguished scholars, both past and present, on the single land tax and its relation to Georgist philosophy. Drawing upon principles of land economics, they offer detailed and diverse insights into the concept of a single tax based on land value and the practical uses of land value taxation in industrialised economies as an effective and equable way to redistribute wealth.Customer Reviews:

Customer Satisfaction Measurement Simplified: A Step-by-Step Guide for ISO 9001:2000 Certification
Terry G. Vavra Manufacturer: ASQ Quality Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0873895002 |
Book Description
Recent changes to the ISO 9001:2000 international standards require that organizations must have an effective method of measuring customer satisfaction to achieve ISO certification. In addition to maintaining thorough documentation of each process, these organizations must also measure the effectiveness of that process, along with the consequences for the customers. Customer Satisfaction Measurement Simplified is the first book on the market specifically written to assist on attaining this requirement. Using graphics, charts, and real data with examples drawn from the author's own experiences, Customer Satisfaction Measurement Simplified will guide you through the process of implementing a customer satisfaction measurement process to help your organization meet ISO 9001 certification.Customer Reviews:
Tries too much and achieves too little.......2002-07-16
In an apparent attempt at simplification, the implicit assumption is made that the reader knows nothing about ISO standards or customer satisfaction measurement. Since customer satisfaction measurement relies on an understanding of research methods and statistics, there seems to be a similar assumption that the reader might not know anything about those either. And that's the crux of the problem. ISO standards, customer satisfaction, research methods and statistics are all big topics in their own right and deserving of at least a full book's worth of explanation.
I'm not sure that any single book could do justice to all of those topics simultaneously, but I know this one does not. I suspect that the amount of detail included would overwhelm a person who truly didn't know anything about any of those topics before picking it up. On the other hand, the book does not provide enough detail to be useful to those who do have knowledge of at least some of the topics. Also, the fact that so much is included would make it easy to lose the forest among the trees. For example, the section on reporting results is longer than the section on identifying customer requirements, but of course if you've done a bad job on the latter, the former is a waste of time.
To make matters worse, the book is cluttered with boxes and lists named things like `step-by-step' and `checkpoints.' These are interspersed throughout the text, and while they may have been an attempt at clarity or simplicity, the result is just the opposite. They make the book seem even more disjointed.
If you just want to know about measuring customer satisfaction, you would be much better off buying the book with that title by James H. Myers. If part of your reason for wanting to know about measuring customer satisfaction is to put systems in place to meet the ISO standard, you would be better off buying the Myers book plus one of the more recent general books about the ISO standards (since customer focus was one of the major changes to the standards, all new ISO books discuss this issue).
A major key to ISO 9001:2000 certification.......2002-04-22
(1) Identify your customers.
(2) Identify their requirements. (Maps to ISO requirements 5.2, 7.2.1).
(3) Determine what you're going to measure, and how.
(4) Measure satisfaction based on step 3. (Maps to ISO requirement 8.2.1).
(5) Analyze the data. (Maps to ISO requirement 8.4).
(6) Report the results.
(7) Communicate the results and employ continuous improvement methods. This complies with the change from the 1994 version in that continual improvement is now required, where it was only implied in the 1994 version.
What makes this book so valuable is that it reduces the complexities for meeting each of the requirements using the process to a series of steps in each process stage. Each chapter contains a summary of the goals, then gives step-by-step procedures needed to attain the goals, and identifies the deliverables that must be produced. This sounds simple on the surface. In reality implementing customer satisfaction requirements management, measurement and continuous improvement is a complex undertaking that not only touches virtually all parts of an enterprise, but also mandates a change in corporate culture.
Additional value in the form of worksheets and checklists covered in the appendices (and provided in electronic format on the CD ROM) make this book absolutely essential to any company that is pursuing certification (or are re certifying under the 2000 version).
Additional features of this book include: the author's extensive experience in customer satisfaction management is condensed into this reasonably short book, the book layout makes it easy to follow and find information, and the straightforward manner in which necessary information is presented. This is the only book, to the best of my knowledge, that solely focuses on this aspect of ISO 9001:2000. Fortunately, it covers all of the essentials and leads you step-by-step through the process of meeting this important set of requirements. I personally believe that it's the key to getting certified under the 2000 requirements because of the scope and magnitude of effort that is required to comply with a seemingly innocuous requirement that can be a major barrier to achieving certification.
