Some good ideas, but now there are better.......2004-03-05

TQM was a great idea in its time. Now one can see that TQM, like what came before and after it like Excellence and Six Sigma, is just a subset of what really works- Open-Book Management (see the book of the same name by John Case). When TQM, or any similar program, is implemented, in order for it to work, needs to address the other areas of OBM such as financial information and understanding, appropriate responsibilities, and a stake in the rewards.

Fortunately, not only does this book/tape talk about TQM in particular, but it also talks about certain issues involved in implementing any similar type of program.

Not much more than a promo for a specialized analysis proc........1998-07-09

The audio book discusses companies which are successful at using a particular analysis procedure but barely touches on management itself. More of an 'infomercial' as it lacks quality content.

interesting strategy.......2000-07-06

Too short , easy read, very clear. His stragegy is a portfolio of just 3 or 4 sector funds. 30 % in Financial, 30% in Technology, 30% in Small Companies and 10% in cash inside a tax saving plan, with regular monthly contributions for "dollar cost averaging". This would provide 20% average yearly return versus usual market 12% with a little more risk The 10% cash is supposed to be there to take advantage of market dips, but he does not expand on this. Also he does not mention anything about rebalancing portfolio occasionally. I have been investing in mutual funds for 15 years. I found the book interesting and plan to make some changes to my portfolio based on the book.

The book fails to achieve what the authors state.

It is a mere collection of undocumented "charts" from each of the models refered to, with overly simplified explanations and in some cases with significant variations from the original theory.

The book cannot serve as a reference tool. Consider purchasing something more relevant.

This book proposes a conception of the corporate strategy making process that recognizes the individual strategy maker as a center-stage corporate actor. This individual-centered view of the stategy making process is needed in order to better understand the interplay between objective factors and the subjective perceptions and values of strategy makers. Using a large sample of executives working in two of the ten largest U.S. commercial banks, Das examines empirically the dynamics of two critical aspects of the role of individual strategy makers: future orientation and perceptions of the strategic planning milieu. He discusses the various implications of his findings for further research into the strategy making process. The author demonstrates the utility of individual future orientation in understanding how strategy makers influence the character of the eventual corporate strategy. The results of Das' study help to explain why long-range planning is really more short-range than anyone cares to admit.

This is a very good Turnaround book. I particularly like the scope development and validation section. Other interesting features correspond to the master scheduling sections as related to different phases of the turnaround.
It would have been good if presented more details about the phases of the Turnaround Management Process.
The review of project management theory is okay. However, I would stress the project management concepts as applied to maintenance work.

Must read for any Baan library........2001-01-19

I have had the pleasure of assisting the implementations of Baan products at several companies in he United States. My background with Baan starts with a very old version 2.0. startup at a Mining and Manufacturing company, to a recent ERP install. All the versions in between. This user manual takes a solid walk through the basics, through tools, and implementation guidance. I recommend this Baan bible for anyone having responsibility to install, parallel, and migrate to ERP Solutions in their business.

From Filing to Fitting in Flexible Manufacturing is based on a well-known but previously unpublished monograph by Ramchandran Jaikumar on the nature and history of manufacturing. The development of mass manufacturing ranks as one of the most important contributors to human living conditions ever - of the same magnitude as agriculture and modern medicine. This monograph examines the development of manufacturing over several centuries, through the eyes of a single industry and company. Throughout this period, the key has been precise control of manufacturing processes, rather than production speed per se. There have been six revolutionary transformations in manufacturing, each involving a shift in hard technology, the nature of human work, and the nature of process control. Each epochal change was a step in the evolution of manufacturing from art to science. Each required a different ethos of process control and forced a new system of manufacture. Machines, the nature of work, and the nature of the organization all had to change in concert. A companion paper by Roger Bohn expands the concept of transition from art to science to encompass two more-or-less parallel shifts: in the nature of procedures, and in the level of technological knowledge. The level of knowledge can be modeled as a directed graph that maps current understanding of causality in the manufacturing process. As a process moves from art towards science, knowledge and its causal graph become more elaborate: new nodes are added, new relationships are established among new and existing nodes, and wholly new issues emerge and are gradually integrated with existing knowledge.
