This book gives new principals (and probably others too) a reference for dealing with the challenges of the job.

5 out of 5 stars A True Surfer's Guide for Survival.......2001-02-06

This book was written with humor and insight. It makes you realize that being a principal with heart and humor is possible. It's not a high-handed theory book; it's a book that you can read and put into immediate practice for success. The situations used in the book strike home with "everyprincipal" realism. I enjoyed it tremendously and found it very useful.

    Book Description

The sampling inspection tables presented in this book were developed for use in the manufacture of communication apparatus and equipment for the Bell Telephone System. It assembles under one cover the three papers of original publication and adds a brief introduction. The papers have been reproduced with no modifications but the material has been rearranged in chapters. Chapter 1 outlines some of the factors to be considered in setting up inspection plans and develops a basis for minimizing the amount of inspection. Chapter 2 covers double sampling, the "average outgoing quality limit" (AOQL) concept, and the mathematical background of the tables. Chapter 3 is a reproduction by permission, which outlines the shop procedures for applying the tables.

      Book Description

If an opportunity exists, is it best to ensure that your product is first to the market or is performance enhanced through waiting and following? What factors should an entrepreneur consider in deciding when to take the lead in being the first to introduce a new product or service? What can be done to improve new venture performance? New Venture Strategy examines the process of introducing a new product or service and offers readers a framework for thinking through the issues involved in new venture performance. Examples include entry timing, market conditions facing the entrant, focus or breadth of entry scope, product or process mimicry, creation and development of entry barriers, and differences between independent and corporate ventures. New Venture Strategy will be useful as a core text in courses on entrepreneurship, corporate entrepreneurship, new product development, small business, and strategic planning. It will also be of interest to those developing business plans and others involved in new venture funding, marketing, and business development.

          Book Description

Newly revised and updated, The Rise of Modern Business compares and analyzes the development of business and business institutions in Great Britain, the United States, Japan, and, to a lesser extent, Germany from the preindustrial era to the present, with emphasis on the twentieth century. Because the evolution of business has been profoundly influenced by its environment, this study pays close attention to connections between business development and political, social, and cultural changes. It also offers an insightful argument on similarities and differences in global business development: the similarities result from the technological and economic imperatives of industrialization, and the differences result from the decisive influence of the national environments—laws, politics, social norms, and culture—within which businesses operate.

This edition of The Rise of Modern Business further highlights the diversity and complexity of business developments by examining both manufacturing and nonmanufacturing firms, exploring the development of small firms in addition to big businesses, and weighing the importance of labor and government for business development in all four nations discussed.

                Book Description

For more than half a century, marketers have bombarded customers with more and more choices in products and services. What is the result? Unprecedented anxiety. Our mental circuit breakers are on overload. In fact, pioneering brand strategists Steven M. Cristol and Peter Sealey assert that we have reached our manageable threshold for making decisions -- and a watershed in product proliferation. In this pathbreaking book, the authors argue with compelling evidence that the next generation of marketing successes will belong to those brands that simplify customers' lives or businesses in ways that are inextricably tied to brand and product positioning. They contend that if a brand is not reducing customer stress, it is creating it -- and it is vulnerable to losing market share to more customer-empathetic competitors.

Writing especially for product or brand managers who are struggling to simplify their portfolios, Cristol and Sealey have created a breakthrough framework that is itself a lesson in simplicity. After presenting two essential guideposts for managers to assess where their brand sits on the stress spectrum, the authors turn to the heart of Simplicity Marketing -- the 4 R's of simplification: Replace, Repackage, Reposition, and Replenish. Using scores of real-world company examples, Cristol and Sealey show how each of the 4 R's interacts with the others in powerful ways to relieve customer stress and how these strategies may be executed individually or in combination to build brand loyalty. Here for the first time are ten specific strategies to relieve customer stress through consolidating, aggregating, or integrating products and services, repositioning brands for more relevance to stress reduction, and decluttering customers' decision-making requirements. The final pages of this brilliant manifesto for a simplicity revolution provide a guide to managing simplicity strategies, leveraging information technology to simplify rather than complicate customers' lives, and integrating all the tools in the book into an executional blueprint.

4 out of 5 stars Required reading material, definitely!!.......2004-09-11

Even if you don't agree with the conclusions of the authors, this book is a 'must-read'! The authors lay out a very convincing argument for the validity of their 'Simplicity' approach to marketing, and the recommendations they make to encorporate the simplicity message in your own marketing, (or otherwise) plans are straightforward and well thought out. I have found the material to be compelling and easy to read, with just enough graphics to add value without clutter. (It seems that even while writing the book, the authors to care to embody the message through the medium!) The materials in the book can be applied to a number of areas in both business and personal life to increase your 'value', and I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Keep It Simple Whenever and Wherever Possible.......2002-01-19

"Simplicity Marketing" rings particularly true in the most developed economies around the world. Businesses and consumers are often overwhelmed with the complexity of choosing goods and services available to them, many products are full of functions and features that only a small minority of users will ever utilize. To end the prevalent brand complexity, clutter, and confusion denounced above, Steven M. Cristol and Peter Sealey offer their audience four strategies called the 4 R's: Replace, Repackage, Reposition, and Replenish. Cristol and Sealey apply each of the 4R's to a multitude of situations in which the life of businesses and consumers can be made it easier at the profit of marketers cognizant of the importance of stress reduction, simplicity, and convenience. Cristol and Sealey correctly point out that only few companies are ultimately insulated from the 4 R's imperative. Cristol and Sealey also rightly draw the attention of their readers to the fact that the 4R's must be integrated into the brand and product strategy so that the product offered is perceived as part of the solution to the growing complexity of people's lives.

                5 out of 5 stars Innovative Marketing.......2001-01-23

An excellent resource for anyone deeply interested in marketing, considering a new business model, or developing a new product.

Finally, marketing professionals who will intelligently embrace and (with ease) outline "repackaging" and "replenishing" strategies. These sections made the book worth the price for me.

The only drawback(s) with the book (though I gave it a full 5 stars), are the case studies. Too many of the online grocers are performing poorly in the marketplace to rely on them as standards, whether or not their marketing strategies are exciting and workable.

The final pages of this brilliant manifesto for a simplicity revolution provide a guide to managing simplicity strategies, leveraging information technology to simplify rather than complicate customers' lives, and integrating all the tools in the book into an executional blueprint.

                    .
The author wrote this beook because he was concerned that many of the SE textbooks on the market were too philosophical, and decided to channel his energies into creating a text
that reflected his realities as an SE practitioner and program
                    manager.

                    The book includes
                    1) conceptual foundations in SE,
                    2) HOW TOs,
                    and
                    3) practitioner-based knowledge.

Since SE applies to any type of system from Space Shuttles to PDAs, organizations, services etc., Wasson built on the basic SE foundations from aerospace and defense in formulating a fresh new approach that canbe applied to any business domain - construction, communications, financial, medical, educational, transportation, etc.

The 57 chapters are "lesson oriented", developed for upper-undergraduate to graduate level students, focus on specific SE topics, and include two types of exercises: development of general systems, products, and services and organizational centric.

Instructors can take the topics to any level of detail they desire, depending on their audience.

                      Book Description

Cost Estimating is beset with pitfalls. Which technique to use? How accurate will it be? This book aims to shed light on these questions. It presents a structured analysis of cost estimating and helps cost estimators make contract-winning estimates for projects relevant to both the budding cost engineer and the reader who simply wants to know how these things are done. After all, if the cost estimator gets it wrong, the implication affects the whole project! Exploring the methodology and overall strategy of project cost estimating, this publication provides an introduction to statistics and databases and illustrates how these may help the modern cost estimator. The book offers an interactive approach where the reader is encouraged to participate in a series of dice exercises to create a thorough understanding of the concepts involved. A disk supplied with the book contains a program - DICER - designed to simulate the dice throws and help calculate the relevant statistics.
