        Book Description

The author introduces Financially Focused Quality (FFQ) to the business world. The FFQ management strategy has been evolving over the years at Lockheed Martin and has been documented as having saved them millions of dollars. FFQ takes TQM and Full-Cycle Corrective Action (FCCA) a critical step further by including a financial viewpoint at the beginning of process improvement activity, and integrating recognition of cost in each step of the process. In the 21st century, technical expertise alone will not be enough. This book offers valuable financial concepts and insights that will greatly improve your worth to your companies. Equipped with FFQ concepts and methodologies, you will be able to observe your workplace from a financial viewpoint, enhancing your value as a decision maker and leader. The book presents the methodology for insuring a company-wide education on key financial issues. With an understanding of basic concepts, the book explains FFQ elements and their use in making and implementing business decisions. The final chapters contain case studies showing successful FFQ applications. Financially Focused Quality: TQM in the 21st Century gives you the skills necessary to implement FFQ in work environments, offering the prospect of improving the translation of quality and cost-cutting measures to the bottom line. It is an important professional reference and provides the financial education that all employees should receive to become leaders in the 21st century.

        1 out of 5 stars FFQ - a waste of money.......2000-08-05

I found this text to be almost completely useless in understanding either how to do total quality management or how to analyze improvement efforts within a company. The author spends a lot of time on how to handle administrative issues such as how to organize a finance department (I am not sure what this has to do with quality) and handling administrative details such as how to administratively handle suggestions and improvement ideas.

What is not handled is how to actually do any of the Total Quality Management (TQM) or quality initiatives that are mentioned but not discussed. The author's idea of employee involvement seems to be standard HR programs such as reward programs, vacation time, benefits packages, etc.

Its focus on integrating TQM with finance harkens back to the days when the finance function ruined the quality of US products by making every decision based "on the numbers" rather than what was needed to improve product and service quality.

I do not disagree with making sure improvement projects have a payoff-that is good business sense. But a text claiming to discuss how to tie quality and finance together should at least discuss how to use both the finance and quality improvement tools rather than focus on how to set up administrative functions to manage the paperwork.

This book is an excellent primer on the latest quality concepts of the 21st century, and takes the reader one step beyond by incorporating innovative financial concepts to ensure profitability. This exceptional text should be on the book shelf of every manager and student of quality.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional breadth of Quality Mgt and Financial topics.......1999-08-17

This book takes the latest TQM-type "flavor of the month" one step further, by integrating recognition of cost at each step in the process. It takes a comprehensive look at contemporary process improvement methodologies, and provides a well-founded education on relevant financial issues. This book is also very interesting to read, filled with fascinating case studies that relate to real-life situations that the author, Mr. Cappels, has solved. I found the breadth of topics covered to be exceptional.

            Book Description

Written for corporate strategic planners and market researchers as well as students of management, this book offers the most complete introduction to the methodology and applications of ordinal time series analysis available in book form. Particularly useful for managers who seek a reliable and accessible means of analyzing the strategic performance of firms, products, industries, or political entities, the ordinal time series approach uses simple data, longitudinal analysis, and rank positions to produce results that more accurately reflect the dynamics of competitive position and corporate performance than those generated by more traditional methods which rely on absolute numbers and complicated analyses. The level of mathematical sophistication required is that of college introductory mathematics for business, making the methodology widely accessible. The contributors explain how to use the methodology and how to collect the appropriate data, review the statistical procedures involved, and examine numerous real-world applications of ordinal time series analysis. The book begins by introducing the notion of formalizing managerial intuition about strategic situations by employing rankings over time to describe the performance of products, firms, and departments, for example. Having established the advantages of using ordinal data, the contributors illustrate the use of rank statistics and show how to incorporate uncertain aspects of strategic situations in an ordinal context. A separate chapter covers information statistics that describe the aggregate behavior of a group of organizations over time. The contributors then present a series of examples demonstrating the wide applicability of ordinal time series analysis to various types of situations. Included are an analysis of the transportation industry over a 30-year period, an ordinal analysis of corporate performance, the application of ordinal analysis to the problem of product strategy, a look at world export activity, and an examination of international competition in the microelectronics industry. Throughout, particular attention is given to providing the reader with the background and information necessary to successfully employ ordinal time series methodology in his or her own environment.

              Book Description

Presented here for the first time in English, this richly detailed study--based on British, French, Greek, and Russian archival sources--tells the story of the powerful Greek trading houses that competed successfully with North America to feed the industrializing population of Western Europe. Vassilis Kardasis presents this commercial history by charting the rise of Greek merchant houses to a position of dominance over the export of trade in Russian grain. Though the Greeks would eventually cede their dominance to the competition of cheaper American grain in the second half of the nineteenth century, their influence was felt in the transformation of Southern Russia to productive agricultural land and the formation of large Black Sea port cities which would eventually encourage massive immigration. Diaspora Merchants in the Black Sea fills an important gap in our understanding of the role of the diasporic Greek community in southern Russian history, the history of Greek maritime activity, and ultimately the history of economic relations between Eastern and Western Europe.

                Book Description

The editors of this volume point out that globalization calls for global history-history that treats the planet as a single complex entity. Several of the chapters address the origins of globalization's first wave in the 19th century, focusing on the interrelationship between economics and the spread of three pioneering inventions: the steam engine, the telegraph and the telephone. Others chronicle the late twentieth-century textile and bicycle industries, the development of the ATM machine, railroad modernization in France, major software disasters and the culturally empowering effects of the cassette tape. And three authors make fundamental arguments about the nature of globalization's changes: how the ties binding Europeans have evolved from patronage to connections to networks, how global interconnectedness has eliminated differences in the perception of time, and how the key to understanding the dynamics of globalization lies in the local application of standardized technology.

                  Book Description

Matrix pearls are the glue that holds medicine together - the valuable kernels of wisdom and experience that guide physicians through the complexities of modern medical practice. Most of the pearls arise from heated discussions at the morbidity and mortality (audit) conference, on hospital rounds, in hallway discussions or in the physicians' lounge, and many arise in the privacy of the consultation room or from family discussions, but the sad fact is these lessons are usually lost - they are seldom recorded and have never been catalogued...until now!

Cut to the Chase: 100 Matrix Pearls for Doctors takes the grand oral traditions of medicine and records them as valuable lessons. Dr. Leo Gordon, author of the popular Gordon's Guide to the Surgical Morbidity and Mortality Conference, distills a thirty year career in medicine into one hundred witty, poignant and eminently readable essays.

Students, nurses, administrators, and physicians in all specialties will find in this book a delicious and instructive view of the ups and downs of life in today's medicine.

                      4 out of 5 stars I love Leo Burnett.......1998-06-01

I was a Burnett once. I worked in LB Taiwan for couple of years since I have graduated from the univeristy. According to publish "100 Leo's" Chinese edition, I have joined all the processes, and read it over and over to find ideas out to develop the launching news release. I do love what Leo Burnett insists about Advertising which is his favoirte career. Even though the sentences are very short, they all are smart words which make people to think deeply. I'd like to re-read it when I met some problem in my job - even I am not in an advertising related company now. And the most important thing is : I made myself a "star reacher" after having worked in LB. I do love Leo Burnett, and look forward to see more books about LB to be published in the future.

                      1 out of 5 stars Don't think of this as a "book".......1997-09-09

If you're expecting an informative book with insight into the world of advertising, you will be disappointed. This is a postcard sized collection of two line quotes few of which are inspiring or even funny. Retain your respect of Leo Burnett, don't buy this book. 5 out of 5 stars "Mistah Kurtz--he dead." An influential work on five 20th century seminal works.......2007-10-21

I read this book for a graduate Humanities course. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, written in 1899 is a seminal work about the ills of colonialism, as well as a postmodern look at the subject of mankind. Conrad's book had a crucial influence on five important works of the twentieth century: J. G. Frazier's book The Golden Bough. Jessie L. Weston's book From Ritual to Romance, T. S. Elliott's poem the Waste Land, Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces, and Francis Ford Coppolla's movie Apocalypse Now, screenplay by John Milius, was based on Conrad's book. Another interesting fact is that this work was read by Orson Welle's Mercury Theater Players on the radio and was to be his first movie. After doing some work on it he abandoned the project to do Citizen Kane! I would have loved to of seen what Welles could have done with this story. Conrad's story is so riveting in part, because he himself served as a riverboat captain. High school teachers and college professors who have discussed this book in thousands of classrooms over the years tend to do so in terms of Freud, Jung, and Nietzsche; of classical myth, Victorian innocence, and original sin; of postmodernism, postcolonialism, and poststructuralism.

Just a taste of the plot reels you in! Marlow, the narrator of Heart of Darkness and Conrad's alter ego, is hired by an ivory-trading company to sail a steamboat up an unnamed river whose shape on the map resembles "an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country and its tail lost in the depths of the land" (8). His destination is a post where the company's brilliant, ambitious star agent, Mr. Kurtz, is stationed. Kurtz has collected legendary quantities of ivory, but, Marlow learns along the way, is also rumored to have sunk into unspecified savagery. Marlow's steamer survives an attack by blacks and picks up a load of ivory and the ill Kurtz; Kurtz, talking of his grandiose plans, dies on board as they travel, downstream.

Sketched with only a few bold strokes, Kurtz's image has nonetheless remained in the memories of millions of readers: the lone white agent far up the great river, with his dreams of grandeur, his great store of precious ivory, and his fiefdom carved out of the African jungle. Perhaps more than anything, we remember Marlow, on the steamboat, looking through binoculars at what he thinks are ornamental knobs atop the fence posts in front of Kurtz's house and then finding that each is "black, dried, sunken, with closed eyelids-a head that seemed to sleep at the top of that pole, and with the shrunken dry lips showing a narrow white line of the teeth" (57).

I especially became interested in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness from the movie Apocalypse Now. There is a scene in the movie that shows Colonel Kurtz's nightstand in his cave. T. S. Elliott's poem the Waste Land is one of three books on the nightstand. The other two are Jessie L. Weston's book From Ritual to Romance, and J. G. Frazier's book The Golden Bough. Anyone wanting to understand the movie Apocalypse Now, especially the character of Colonel Kurtz, and what Milius and Copolla are trying to tell their audience need to read these three books as well as Conrad's Heart of Darkness!

As a graduate student reading in philosophy and history I recommend this book for anyone interested in literature, myth, history, philosophy, religion and fans of Apocalypse Now.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for those interested in JIT.......1999-10-27

This book encompasses all the main issues of JIT which are covered deeply. Even so, the writing style is overly dense and it makes hard to go through the text. It's a reference book on all the literature in inventory but a bit out of date.

                                          Description:
A substantial amount of research has been carried out on capacity-constrained production-inventory systems. This has mostly dealt with models assuming deterministic demand and single-item systems. In previous work, one of the authors together with a co-researcher designed a basic theoretical model for systems with multiple items and stochastic external demand. These developments were presented within a discrete time framework. Lead times were assumed to be given constants and the net present value principle was applied. Although the theory developed concerned situations in which the lead times could be any non-zero constants, in order to design an analytical solution procedure, the assumption was made that lead times were zero, in order to be able to apply dynamic programming. Cumulative production and cumulative demand were taken as state variables. In this paper, we remain in the discrete time framework and develop a methodology for the case that lead times are non-zero, whereas demand is deterministic. Our emphasis is on the design of the state space, the properties of which depend on the product structures (the input matrix), the distribution of lead times among the production processes (the lead time matrix), and on the historical sequences of the production vectors. Once an efficient state space is designed, dynamic programming may be applied as a solution method. The net present value principle is again applied.

                                            Description:
Consider a one-warehouse multi-retailer system under constant and deterministic demand, which is subjected to transportation capacity for every delivery period. To search for the best stationary zero inventory ordering (ZIO) policy, or the best power-of-two policy, or the best nested policy, the problem is formulated as a 0-1 integer linear program in which the objective function comprises of a fixed transportation cost whenever a delivery is made and the inventory costs for both the warehouse and retailers. To overcome the transportation capacity limitation, we extend the policies to allow for staggering deliveries. It is shown that with transportation capacity constraint the non-staggering policy can have its effectiveness close to 0% from the best staggering policy and the power-of-two policy with staggering allowed can have its effectiveness close to 0% from the optimal policy. Nevertheless in general, the power-of-two policy fairs well on a number of randomly generated problems. To solve the large distribution network problem, an efficient heuristic based on the power-of-two policy with staggering of deliveries is suggested.

                                                  Book Description

Semantics in Business Systems begins with a description of what semantics are and how they affect business systems. It examines four main aspects of the application of semantics to systems, specifically: How do we infer meaning from unstructured information, how do application systems make meaning as they operate, how do practitioners uncover meaning in business settings, and how do we understand and communicate what we have deduced? This book illustrates how this applies to the future of application system development, especially how it informs and affects Web services and business rule- based approaches, and how semantics will play out with XML and the semantic Web. The book also contains a quick reference guide to related terms and technologies. It is part of Morgan Kaufmann's series of Savvy Manager's Guides.

4 out of 5 stars explains XML and Web Services in an easy way.......2006-01-05

McComb explains a challenging idea of semantics and why this matters in business. He shows that it can be a vital way to efficiently encode your business's rules in a framework of Web Services and servers. This involves understanding different approaches to encoding these rules. Procedural, declarative (like SQL), model based and rule based.

The book goes into how XML is the base standard of representing data or rules in a Web Service context. It takes a lot of the mystery and hype out of what Web Services are or could be. A sober counterpoint to much speculation elsewhere. But one that still clearly shows its potential.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Well-written, thoughtful, and informative. A must-read!.......2004-07-26

This book does a tremendous job of covering some important issues -- rarely does a technical author provide comprehensive analysis of the role of semantics. McComb addresses high-level issues while also providing solid, hands-on, specific information.

Having myself been involved in complex integration projects, it's refreshing to see someone discussing the problem (and potential business value) of getting meaning out of unstructured information -- without promoting a particular technology. Even more impressive is that he does this using an extremely readable style.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was skeptical that the book would be relevant to a small company's projects, but I got lots of good ideas that we can start implementing right away. Because the world of the semantic web is still so new, even our small company has a chance to contribute to a lot of the ontologies that will be used in our industry for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive, inspiring, and distressing.......2004-06-08

As a professional data modeller, I found this book impressive, inspiring, and distressing.

It is impressive because the author has done a good job of encapsulating a broad set of what on the surface appear to be completely unrelated topics--metadata, business rules, data modeling, XML, etc. Except that I am interested in all of them, which should already have told me that they were related. He managed to balance the level of detail for each of the areas, not getting either intimidating with detail or too superficial to be useful.

I found it inspiring because I really have been interested in this subject for many years and just didn't know it. In my data modeling practice I have always focused more on the meaning of concepts than on how they might be physically represented in databases. The author's admonition to companies to spend more time (and money) considering semantics could be in my marketing materials.

My current problem is that data modeling has become passé and it is tricky to market my services. I like to distinguish myself from other data modelers in that I think I am better than most in understanding semantics, but I never described it that way. Semantics now gives me a way to rework my marketing message.

I found this book distressing for the same reasons I found it inspiring. It points out that far from being a closed issue, this field is just beginning. The amount of stuff I still don't know is really troubling. The bibliography seriously scared me. Part of the problem is that my undergraduate degree was in philosophy, but in addition to the fact that I really have trouble after all these years remembering who said what, I now realize that my education in that subject was seriously superficial. Now I am going to have to take a refresher course!

While I often see myself as an old curmudgeon who hates new ideas, I see this book as a challenge to me to get my intellectual act together. I welcome that and I am glad to see that there are still exciting things to be done.
