Book Description
We find ourselves engaged in various kinds of negotiations every day, from trying to land a new account or win a promotion at work, to buying a house or a car, or bargaining down a cell phone bill, or settling a dispute with a friend or spouse. In this groundbreaking book, negotiation expert Ed Brodow shows us how to settle conflicts amicably to reach a win-win solution every time.
Using the no-nonsense, results-oriented boot camp approach, Brodow drills readers on the basic skills needed to master the art of negotiation. After completing Brodow’s basic training program, you will have learned how to:
• Conquer your fear of confrontation and overcome the negative behaviors that hold you back
• Identify and develop your personal negotiation style
• Assess the other side’s strengths and weaknesses
• Get the other side to make concessions without giving up any of your goals
• Master the art of listening to understand the other side’s position and strengthen your own
• Avoid getting sidetracked by personal or emotional issues
• Create an atmosphere of trust in which the other party is a collaborator rather than a competitor
• Break through impasses and close the deal
Using a wealth of examples from real-life encounters, Brodow demonstrates how to negotiate for things most readers never knew were negotiable, such as department store purchases, medical costs, loan rates, phone bills, and credit card fees. He reveals how to develop the skills and the confidence each of us need to negotiate successfully, and achieve our goals at work and in our personal lives.
Customer Reviews:
Well Written and Helpful.......2007-06-12
Brodow provides a very useful summary for those needing to negotiate - eg. for a raise, starting salary, buying or selling a house or car, etc. Overall suggestions are made (eg. the most important trait is listening, with the ability to ask good open-ended questions also important; be willing to walk away; have a pre-thought minimum acceptable, target, and high target prior to beginning), followed by specific suggestions for certain situations and involving specific personalities.
I would suggest giving the book a quick read, then keeping it handy to refer to in future negotiations.
Ethical and well written.......2007-02-09
I liked this book a lot. Most negotiating books are either so complicated that you'd have to be an ambassador to understand them or so aggressive in their tactics that you wouldn't want to use them. This book is a perfect balance of ethical methods that will make you a winner. Ed Brodow is a competitor of mine on the negotiating lecture circuit and he has done an excellent job of distilling his all-day boot camp into a highly readable book. From Roger Dawson, Author of "Secrets of Power Negotiation."
Good Value.......2007-02-05
Ed Brodow presents good ideas in a straight forward and understandable way. The book is well worth the price.
Negotiation Boot Campers Book.......2007-01-29
Ed Brodow brings years of experience in sales, acting and consulting to his direct, concise, practical and anecdotal tome of terrific ideas. For those of us who loathe negotiating, he reminds us that we do it daily in our professional and personal lives and that we can adopt actions that work.
After reading his practical, conversational book, I was inspired to make a call to an airline that charged me to change a "free" ticket. The voucher for the exact amount of that charge is in the mail to me. Ed Brodow's ideas and techniques worked for me and they will for you! Buy it now, it's the best investment you'll make.
Good information, not just for sales.......2007-01-28
The book is a stripped course in the essentials of negotiation. All the steps needed to improve your skills and improve your results are simply and clearly stated with quick explanations of each.
Don't get me wrong, because I think this book is very, very helpful. However, it is quick. The examples are quick, so if you have no background in sales, bargaining, negotiation, or mediation, the examples may not sell you on the techniques. However, as other reviews point out and from my other readings, I would say that the steps and suggestions from Brodow and squarely on the mark.
The book is a little misleading. From the examples and subtitle (How to Resolve Conflict, Satisfy Customers, and Make Better Deals), you would think that the book is primarily geared towards salesman. Don't let that distract you from the lessons. The comments listed are helpful in all situations of conflict resolution. The 70/30 rule is universal.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about and fine-tune his or her skills in negotiation.

Excellent Information Planning Experiments.......2001-06-14
This book is for someone that has identified problems, and wants to use sound experiments to solve those problems. The book provides some good guidelines, and some good forms for preparing experiments (some of which I use). They emphasize graphical/visual approaches, and avoid statistics, which I missed somewhat. When I travel to different plants to solve problems, I use this book as a reference.
review of design of experiments.......1999-12-26
this book makes statistics understandable! i love the graphics!

Understandable Design of Experiments and Quality Application.......1999-01-20
Robert Brewer has written a book that allows you to understand statistical process control techniques without being a mathematician. He uses graphs were ever possible to point out how to tell if a process is working as it should. He also explains ideas like process capability, process improvment and analysis of variance of properties in a straighforward, readable and understandable fashion.

Mining The Middle Ground: Developing Mid-level Managers for Strategic Change
ASIN: 078790208X |
Book Description
An exceptional job of refocusing the middle manager's role?a must read for practitioners and educators alike.
--Jack Viega, editor, The Academy of Management Executives
In their quest to become leaner, flatter, and reengineered, organizations have systematically cut out the very positions that once made them successful?mid-level managers. In The Strategic Middle Manager, management experts Steven Floyd and Bill Wooldridge draw on a decade of research involving over 250 middle managers to demonstrate that the success of future organizations rests decisively on strong middle management.
The authors present the tools managers need to:
- Redefine their roles
- Increase their strategic value
- Secure their futures
- Identify the top performers in the ranks...and much more!
Far from lacking perspective, middle managers have a unique, pivotal perspective that places them at the forefront of organizational change. They can play the role of champion, synthesizer, facilitator, and implementer--and this book gives the advice needed to energize management. A must-read for training professionals, managers, and top executives, Floyd and Wooldridge's work will radically redesign--and drastically improve--your organization's effectiveness.
Customer Reviews:
A much-needed and excellent work........1999-08-25
I use this book in my MBA and Undergraduate courses in Strategy. For my MBA students especially, young men and women of an average age of 27, in lower middle level management positions, this book makes strategic thinking and their role in it a concrete reality. They begin identifying immediately with the four roles of championing, synthesizing, facilitating, and implementing. Several of my students have become more assertive in their jobs as they have a better understanding of their role. A few have recognized that their firm has "no clue" about management in a rapidly changing and global environment and begun the search for a new position in a new company with a future. The Strategic Middle Manager is, indeed, a most valuable resource.

Book Description
Out of Work, the first book to chronicle the history of unemployment in the United States traces the evolution of the problem of joblessness from the early decades of the nineteenth century to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Challenging the widely held notion that the United States was a labour-scarce society in which jobs were plentiful, it argues that unemployment played a major role in American history long before the crash of the stock market in 1929. Focusing on the state of Massachusetts, Professor Kevssar analyses the economic and social changes that gave birth to the modern concept of unemployment. Drawing on previously untapped sources - including richly detailed statistics and vivid verbatim testimony - he demonstrates that joblessness was a pervasive feature of working-class life from the 1870s to the 1920s. The book describes the ingenious, yet personally costly, strategies that unemployed workers devised to cope with the joblessness in the absence of formal governmental assistance. It also explores the many dimensions of working-class life that were profoundly affected by recurrent lay-offs and the chronic uncertainty of work. Finally, it demonstrates that the fundamental contours of the Massachusetts experience were repeated, sooner or later, throughout the United States.

Book Description
Hardbound. The set of papers in this Handbook reflect the rich theory and wide range of applications of network models. Two of the most vibrant applications areas of network models are telecommunications and transportation. Several chapters explicitly model issues arising in these problem domains. Research on network models has been closely aligned with the field of computer science both in developing data structures for efficiently implementing network algorithms and in analyzing the complexity of network problems and algorithms. The basic structure underlying all network problems is a graph. Thus, historically, there have been strong ties between network models and graph theory. A companion volume in the Handbook series, entitled Network Routing, examines problems related to the movement of commodities over a network. The problems treated arise in several application areas including logistics, telecommunications, facility location, VLSI desi

Book Description
Two years after the publication of the Turnbull Report on corporate governance in the UK, it has been acknowledged that "many companies now find reputation risk a central cause of concern". And recently, several large, high profile and established companies have found that if they lose the trust of a particular group of stakeholders, the costs can be very high.
They have seen first-hand that brand equity is a function of these relationships and how it can impact on access to capital, long-term profitability, cash flow and sustained shareholder value. As this book went to press, British Airways experienced a rare bout of wildcat industrial action that left its reputation reeling. In many ways, this incident captured much of the essence of what can happen when relationships sour with customers, employees and also with shareholders.
Today, the new "rules of the game" concerning corporate reputation are taking shape. These go well beyond corporate image or identity and are in a very different league to public relations. Corporate governance and company law reforms now demand that the duties of directors and company reporting requirements explicitly deal with the imperatives of reputation.
Reputational Risk - -How to Manage for Value Creation focuses on the relationships that underpin reputational risk management and points the way on how to effectively manage reputational risk. The Briefing demonstrates that the best way for a business to report on reputational risk management is to report on the strength of its stakeholder relationships and the benefits that these can bring.
It discusses why reputational risk must be aligned with an organization's strategic priorities and integrated into its approaches to risk and business management - demonstrating how investing in and maintaining reputation as a critical corporate asset can both build brand equity and help to deliver shareholder value.
Essential reading for all senior decision-makers who are responsible for business strategy and value creation, this Briefing demonstrates - in a language they can understand and through examples to which they can relate - how value creation will increasingly depend upon a proper understanding of what reputational risk really means.
