                        How much productivity can a hierarchical organization bring in business today? Can you increase the productivity of your organization if you have more control over your employees?

                        Here are the persons who strongly deny to this question; Finn van Hauen and Bjarne Kastberg, Danish consultants of business management; Arlene Soden, an U.S. consultants.

                        This book co-authored by the three people stresses to value your employees¡¯ creativity and values; it suggests values-based leadership by rethinking control, the traditional leadership. The messages like this attracted extraordinary interests at the ASTD(American Society for Training & Dvelopment) Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, last May.

                        The point is:

                        If its employees can share the values and beliefs of a company and behave voluntarily, the company can get rid of the inefficiency caused by constant orders and obedience. Control is an obstacle to the employees¡¯ commitment to their jobs. The authors introduce the methods that support change, adaptability, innovation and commitment by showing easily understandable pictures, tables, and cases.

                        The original title of the book is ¡°Dare to Kiss the Frog.¡± quoted from ¡°The Frog Prince¡± written by Andersen of famous Danish fairy tale writer.

                        When the princess became sad because her precious golden ball fell into the pond playing with it, a frog came to her and said he would get her the golden ball if the princess would promise to kiss him in return. This is a metaphor of the frog¡¯s transformation into a handsome prince when the princess kissed the frog to keep her words. It means that breaking conventional beliefs or assumptions can lead to incredible results.

                        Therefore, the book does not advocate the conventional management theories we are accustomed to and rather urges us to rethink the beliefs that control over employees¡¯ behaviors is effective to get the power of transformation.

                        The authors focus on humanistic factors and adopt significant sociopsychological concepts such as values, beliefs, and self-esteem to run a business. They defy the traditional, hierarchical organization systems, which are rampant in modern business. They claim that it¡¯s time to adopt new paradigm. For example, ¡°What is belief?¡±:

                        A patient arrived at the doctor¡¯s office and stated his conviction that he was a corpse. When the doctor asked the patient if corpses could bleed, the patient replied, ¡°No.¡± The doctor then took a needle and punctured a small hole in the patient¡¯s arm. Out came a drop of blood. The patient exclaimed, ¡°I didn¡¯t know that corpses could bleed!¡±

                        As shown in the above, beliefs are sometimes absurd. People who are excessively used to a conservative organizational culture or who are in wrong management environment work only inactively without creating new belief systems. The book provides a new view with these people; values-based leadership or management that relates values, purpose and beliefs to everyday actions. The key point of the book is: ¡°To throw away beliefs that prohibit transformation and create new beliefs and values.

But cooperative agreements often fail because problems affecting joint operations are managed inadequately.                                                       This book presents a history of Western monetary systems and explains why the system was preferred to a gold standard before 1800. Professor Redish argues that the technological ability to issue fiduciary monies, and a commitment mechanism to prevent opportunistic governments changing the ratio between the currency and a unit of gold, were (frequently overlooked) prerequisites for the emergence of the Classical gold standard. The simplicity of the gold standard, a monetary system where there is a fixed ratio between a weight of gold and a unit of currency, makes it an obvious focus for discussion of commodity money systems, and for contrasts with today's fiat money regimes.

                                                          This is an excellent book on how to be more effective on a sales call. Mr. Giglio brings a fresh perspective to improving your sales skills.

                                                          One thing I especially liked was how he carefully explains how to avoid falling into a "Murphy's Law" situation during a sales call. He gives great examples of sales calls where he, as a coach, was present. These examples are relevant to the real world and quite practical.

                                                          This book do not try to fill you with new 'techniques', it instead describes new ways to approach a customer, which ultimately produces the lasting results we are seeking.

                                                          I highly recommend this book to everyone. "Beating the Deal Killers", can add a new, more business-like dimension to your professional life.

                                                          "Running Your Machines with SPC" is the book I recommend for both new and 'sustainment' operations SPC training.

                                                          Too often, operations personnel have been introduced to charting methods from a quality or engineering perspective, and not from a tactical operations point of view. A quality perspective often emphasizes product disposition, and an engineering perspective usually focuses on capability issues.

                                                          This book clearly illustrates the operations role of SPC and the use of control charts for rapid and effective `hour-by-hour' tactical decision-making.

                                                          I reviewed many textbooks for my Managing MIS course, and this was one of the finalists. I chose it because of it's easy to read style, systemic approach, and good use of case studies.
