        Book Description

Understanding Organization Through Culture and Structure: Relational and Other Lessons From the African American Organization presents an innovative view of organizations and the communication processes that constitute them. Arguing that human beings are communicatively embedded in their cultures, Anne Maydan Nicotera and Marcia J. Clinkscales, working with Felicia R. Walker, examine issues concerning task and relational orientations and the ways they and other cultural dimensions connect with organizational structure and function for predominantly African American organizations. Utilizing the results of their own research on organizations, they develop a set of humanistically-based models that illustrate how hidden cultural processes suffuse organizational life and are manifest through communication.

Emphasizing the development of alternative theories and models of organizing which are rooted in African-American culture, such as team-based versus hierarchy-based interactions, this book explores such organizational functions as leadership and management, power, authority and control, communication and interpersonal dynamics, and cultural identity and human development. Applying their findings in a broader analysis of contemporary practices in organizational restructuring, the authors present research that serves as the foundation for generating several emergent models with significant implications for organizational systems.

Understanding Organization Through Culture and Structure stimulates and inspires current researchers of organizational communication, and is certain to raise greater awareness of the operation of culture in organizing. The text is intended for scholars and students in organizational communication, management, organizational psychology, African studies, and related areas.

        Book Description

Changeovers in 3 minutes or less! That is the result of the process described in this book. Picking up where Dr. Shingo's Single Minute Exchange of Die left off, it streamlines the process even further to reduce changeover time and cut staffing requirements in half simultaneously!

The book describes how to achieve quick changeover in virtually any type of production environment with:

The book first outlines the tactical principles for improving the three phases of the changeover procedure. Next you'll learn how to improve changeover on a processing line. All of the ideas presented are based on kaizen improvements that require very little, if any, expenditure. Process razing and the implementation of one-piece flow are also examined as means for eliminating wasteful transportation and searching.

I had hoped that this would be an extension of Shigeo Shingo's "A Revolution in Manufacturing: The SMED System," but unfortunately it is not really helpful. The writing is convoluted. The translation could be better. I didn't find anything in this book that wasn't explained much more clearly in Shingo's book.

          Book Description

Andreu Mas-Colell has been doing pioneering work using differential topology in the analysis of general equilibrium. This work is regarded as outstanding and one of the major contributions to the development of rigorous economic theory in the last twenty years. The articles he has written have been difficult and technically demanding. In this book he brings this work together to show its scope and its power. He presents the analysis in a way which makes it accessible to the broader range of economic theorists and advanced students. This book has been long awaited as a seminal contribution to the subject.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent summary of advances in general equilibium.......1999-01-19

Making use of differential topology, Andreu Mas-Collel's book is an excellent synthesis of new techniques in general equilbrium theory. Traditionally, general equilibrium theory has been dominated by convexity analysis. The existence have been driven by assumptions such as convex preferences. Mas-Collel shows another possible route from which to analyze markets : conditions on derivatives. Amongst other acheivements, the book discusses how using a differentiable approach can allow for simple calculations on the number of equilibria (using index theory). Counting the number of equilibria is an area where the traditional convexity approach has been remarkably unsuccessful. The theory is elegant and straight-forward.

The presentation is clear. The book begins with an introduction to differential topology giving the less mathematically sophisticated reader enough background in concepts like transversality to understand the economics results which are proved later in the book. Concepts are developped slowly and in an intelligent manner with equilibrium theories occurring later in the book. On the whole, this book is a great contribution to economics and ought to be required reading for all economic theorists.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the best book ever written on economics........1999-01-14

Economics has been rigorized and advanced by the brilliant work of Debreu and Mas-Collel relating differential topology to the structure of the pseudo-equilbrium manifold. This book is an incredible summary and extension of that project, critical to our understanding of the economy.

            Book Description

Since the large-scale manufacture of personal timepieces began, industry leadership has shifted among widely disparate locations, production systems, and cultures. This book recounts the story of the quest for supremacy in the manufacture of watches--from the cottage industries of Britain; to the preeminence of Switzerland and, later, the United States; to the high-tech plants of Japan and the sweatshops of Hong Kong. Glasmeier examines both the strategies adopted by specific firms and the interplay of such varying influences as technological change, cyclical economic downturns, war, and national trade policies. In so doing, she delineates a cohesive framework within which to address such broader questions as how sustained regional economic development takes place (or starts and then stops); how decisions made by corporations are structured by internal and external forces; and the ways industrial cultures with different strategic learning capabilities facilitate or thwart the pursit of technological change.

4 out of 5 stars Two centuries of regional evolution in watch manufacture.......2001-08-12

Related to the authorýs previous work, Manufacturing Time reviews economic history and regional development for an industry with over 300 years of change.

The book focuses on shifting supplier trends in the last two centuries of consumer watch making, an obviously mature industry that will continue in some form. Various nations have fared well while they have held some technical or popular advantage, but have had trouble responding to industry internal and external forces that change the game. The book explores how players, who were once swift and strong winners, become slow and ponderous losers, dragging down entire economic communities. Demonstrated life cycles within watch manufacturing are instructive regarding general business management, industrial organization and policy.

2 out of 5 stars Manufacturing Time a disappointment for afficianados.......2001-06-20

Any of us who love horology and want to learn more will be very disappointed by this book.

It is very broadly based with virtually no supporting technical detail and numerous techical errors.

For example it states that a pin lever watch has fewer moving parts than a jeweled lever...

She freqeuently refered to Landes book but he in addition to being a respected academic is an enthusuastic collector.

...This book has no grabbing technical detail, not even enough to justify the sweeping economic statements she makes.

To her credit she pointed out some trends and aspects of national markets I had not understood but it is tough going even for someone already deeply interested in this subject.

Fans of Geoffrey Moore's Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado will certainly be attracted to The Chasm Companion, a step-by-step manual by longtime Moore associate Paul Wiefels that lays out specific ways to apply his popular tech-oriented business principles in our fast-changing world. But even those who never warmed to the earlier works--which proposed a pragmatic path for successfully navigating the ever-moving environment of "disruptive technologies that force changes in both strategy and behavior"--could find this book appealing. Designing The Chasm Companion as a hands-on field guide, Wiefels opens by explaining six "inflection points" in high-tech market development (the Early Market, the Chasm, the Bowling Alley, the Tornado, Main Street, Total Assimilation) that he and Moore insist everyone must carefully watch and properly react to as internal and external conditions evolve. He then outlines models and tools developed in the consulting practice he co-founded with Moore that enable individual corporations to carefully craft relevant strategies that they can align correctly with the appropriate market phases defined earlier. Finally, he presents initiatives (strategy validation, whole product management, marketing communications planning, and field engagement strategy) to help these firms actually implement their plans. Graphics and sidebars help Wiefels drive his points home clearly. --Howard Rothman

              Book Description

In The Chasm Companion, The Chasm Group's Paul Wiefels presents readers with a new analysis of the ideas introduced in bestselling author Geoffrey Moore's classic books, Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado, and focuses on how to translate these ideas into actionable strategy and implementation programs. This step-by-step fieldbook is organized around three major concepts: how high-tech markets develop, creating market development strategy, and executing go-to-market programs based on the strategy.

5 out of 5 stars The Blueprint for High Tech Product Marketers.......2007-02-21

I've been familiar with Geoffrey Moore's work since hearing him speak at a Cisco Systems Partner Summit in 1998. This field book is a must for anyone who wants to understand what to do (and not to do) to successfully market a high-tech product at each stage of the Technology Adoption Life Cycle, and during the Product Life Cycle. Reading this book has helped me better understand how and why we succeeded (and failed when we failed) at my previous company in the tech bubble of the 1990s. The challenge for managers and executives when reading this book is having the courage and fortitude to apply these principles, even when they seem counter-intuitive.

After reading the Moore's "Crossing the Chasm", this book really bored me. Maybe the language used in the book is the problem. I am not sure. However, I highly reccommend you to buy Moore's "Crossing the Chasm". It is an excellent book.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive and could be turned into a leaflet.......2004-11-08

I have read "Crossing the Chasm" and "Inside the tornado" by Moore, both very good books! When I first laid my eyes on this book I had a slight feeling that there might be risk of overlap. I think Wiefelds saw this as well and got a good endorsement by his colleague Moore - to state that this is a complement, not a repetition. That the book was published after the dot-com, in 2002, felt reassuring though - a lot of good lessons were probably to be learned for the reader. Ok, so I had high expectations, but felt a slight doubt.

After reading the book I have two statements:
              1. The book delivers some more hands on the two books it referrers to, some really good lists. All in all about nine pages of good ROI-of time material.
              2. I am very sad that Wiefelds did not listen to his own good recommendation: don't talk about your product as you know it - know your target group! Wiefelds should know that I am not planning on reading this book for fun - I want a high gain/time-quota, not 352 pages that take a week to read, when a 20 page leaflet would be sufficient! Because the book is repetitive - very!

              To summarize:
The book offers some good hands on tips and lists, but should have been a 20 page leaflet.

5 out of 5 stars Extends beyond high tech.......2004-01-24

Wiefels get to the heart of high tech marketing. Nothing I have read has more insights or is more useful in the practical application of marketing constructs for high tech. Anybody in high tech, indeed in marketing of any sort, can benefit from these concepts.

5 out of 5 stars THE guide for tech marketeers and managers.......2003-04-08

It's a very simple and clear framework to keep in mind, with VERY practical results in day-to-day activities of product management (specially for those, like me, come from "techies" backgrounds). It's reccommended to read the other 5 books of Chasm Group to fully understand the concepts, but to start using as product manager, this is THE guide.

Eighty percent of today's desktop computers operate on chips produced by Intel Corporation, which is now a more profitable company than the top 10 PC makers combined. But just how did the company, under CEO Andrew Grove, become so powerful? And what does its position mean to those who depend upon it? By combining public records, private documents, and interviews with more than 100 of those who know the company best, Financial Times columnist Tim Jackson has produced the fascinating, definitive story: Inside Intel: Andy Grove and the Rise of the World's Most Powerful Chip Company.

              Book Description

Named one of the Best Business Books of 1997 by Business Week, Inside Intel is the gripping business saga of a company that rose to dominance through technological innovation, and maintained its leadership against competitors through aggressive marketing, tough business tactics, and liberal use of legal firepower. In his in-depth portrait of Intel, the first history/expose of the company, Financial Times columnist Tim Jackson reveals that: *

Intel's corporate culture is determinedly secretive and authoritarian. *

The company retains its own force of private investigators to prevent its employees from going astray. *

Intel routinely uses the threat of lawsuits against workers and rivals. At the center of this story is Andy Grove, Intel's high-profile CEO and chairman, once a penniless immigrant who waited tables to put himself through college. It is Grove who has made the unpopular decisions which have kept Intel at the top of the chip market. Exhaustively researched from court records, unpublished documents, and interviews with Intel's competitors, partners, and past and present employees, Jackson traces the company's spectacular failures and successes, as well as the powerful human struggles that have made Intel one of the most competitive players in a high-stakes game.

I learned *alot* in this book. It felt at times like a 'way-back-machine', taking me back to the good-old-days of computers. It is definitely packed with information, and sometimes the cast of characters can be a bit large, but well worth the read! David W.

How did Intel become the most powerful company and why did they do so well after deregulation. This is the story that tells how the Pentium chip tried to change the world and sets the stage for how AMD fell behind (until recently). Andy Grove gives great management tips but this remains mostly the story of Intel. Andy Grove has several other books for management strategies. I highly recommend this for those who want to understand how the computer industry arrives at where it is today.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-05-08

This book gives an excellent chronologic sequence of beginning and eventual rise of Intel. It is pager turner from the 1st page. Also, gives a very clear visibility to an outsider of how well and menacingly Intel built its empire and business. A great book for anyone interested in knowing the history of Intel and semiconductor sector.

5 out of 5 stars Fair and Balance reporting. Great Motivational stories!.......2004-01-11

unlike most books on corporate america or stories about how exceptional american, against all odds, achieved exceptional things, this book did not do the typical left wing liberal spin to curse corporate america or give the same old same old "capitalism is evil" speech. the narratives detailed how a group of americans, in particular Noyce, Moore and Grove, took risk and boldly "go out and do something" (to quote Noyce) which eventually created wealth for himself/herself, for the employees and for many many people around the world (intel's employees and investors locate all over the world). these are people who in Anthony Robbins' definition as people who made positive difference in a lot of peoples' life. great book, extremely motivating. five star.

5 out of 5 stars The Birth Of A Processor Manifests The End Of The USSR.......2002-10-25

Very nice book about the US semiconductor industry. It gives us a rare look into the world of corporate America. Very interesting, well-written, and non-technical. Anyone with an interest in the entrepreneurship and computer industry would enjoy this book. This book provides many interesting and some uninteresting details about Intel's history.

This book can give an authentic taste both of the history of ingenuity and energy inside Intel. Mr. Jackson did a wonderful job! But there's a little too much on Intel's battles with AMD and not enough on its unique relationship with Microsoft.

May be you never believe it, that such a small silicon thing as Intel's microprocessor was a one of the main media to manifest the impotence of the communist regime in the USSR. In fact, I'm sure this technology turned out more dangerous for the Soviet Union than Reagan's Star Wars.

The new wave of organizational innovations involves new types of arrangements between individuals and corporations. It is likely to continue to produce new organizational forms, spanning the entire range of combinations of markets and hierarchies and involving complex, sometimes protracted negotiation processes between individuals and corporate identities. Such negotiation processes, we believe, will be an increasingly pervasive aspect of corporate life and an important mechanism for facilitating the new integration of individualism and big business through corporate entrepreneurship.

                Book Description

In Making Silicon Valley, Christophe Lécuyer shows that the explosive growth of the personal computer industry in Silicon Valley was the culmination of decades of growth and innovation in the San Francisco-area electronics industry. Using the tools of science and technology studies, he explores the formation of Silicon Valley as an industrial district, from its beginnings as the home of a few radio enterprises that operated in the shadow of RCA and other East Coast firms through its establishment as a center of the electronics industry and a leading producer of power grid tubes, microwave tubes, and semiconductors. He traces the emergence of the innovative practices that made this growth possible by following key groups of engineers and entrepreneurs. He examines the forces outside Silicon Valley that shaped the industry -- in particular the effect of military patronage and procurement on the growth of the industry and on the development of technologies -- and considers the influence of Stanford University and other local institutions of higher learning.

Lécuyer argues that Silicon Valley's emergence and its growth were made possible by the development of unique competencies in manufacturing, in product engineering, and in management. Entrepreneurs learned to integrate invention, design, manufacturing, and sales logistics, and they developed incentives to attract and retain a skilled and motivated workforce. The largest Silicon Valley firms -- including Eitel-McCullough (Eimac), Litton Industries, Varian Associates, Fairchild Semiconductor, and Intel -- dominated the American markets for advanced tubes and semiconductors and, because of their innovations in manufacturing, design, and management, served as models and incubators for other electronics ventures in the area.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent historical contribution that is also a good read.......2005-12-01

Lecuyer provides a compelling new perspective on the development of Silicon Valley, grounded in the evolution of a unique electronics manufacturing capability in the region. The centrality of manufacturing is traced through the growth both of an ecosystem of high-technology firms across four decades and of the novel business and management practices that were created. With this manufacturing perspective, Lecuyer shows how sucessive waves of high technology industries, from tubes to semiconductors to software, grew on the business, social, and technological innovations and capacities of the preceeding waves on the Peninsula.

Lecuyer's narrative is engaging, and populated by remarkable characters like the Varian brothers, Gordon Moore, Jean Hoerni, Robert Noyce, Andy Grove, and Apple Computer's "two Steves." The scholarship is deep and thorough.

Making Silicon Valley strikes me as an important contriubtion to the literature that would be of interest to many readers who are curious about the history of technology and business, well beyond the academic specialists for whom it will do doubt become standard fare.

                  Book Description

The production of bicycles in Britain and the United States recently suffered severe setbacks. The renowned American Schwinn brand was downgraded to the mass market by its new owners following bankruptcy, and Britain's Raleigh came close to closure because of high debts and poor returns, saved only by a last-minute management buyout. In both cases, market share and credibility were lost to newer, more innovative firms, as well as to a recentering of the global bicycle industry in the Far East.

This book reflects on such changes by setting them within a sociological and historical context. It focuses on the British bicycle industry in the interwar years and in the 1980s and the 1990s--periods characterized by modernization of production and of industrial organization, by changing relations among players in the industry, by new developments in labor relations, and by changes in interactions between markets and product design. In particular, it traces the fortunes of the Raleigh Cycle Company from its beginnings as an innovative young firm, through massive expansion of its products and markets and the assimilation of many of its competitors, into further innovation amid market contraction and management inertia, and finally into a phase of global restructuring that has transformed and reduced its role within the industry.

The book explores the complex ways in which product design, production methods, industrial organization, and the cultures of cycling have interacted to create a succession of sociotechnical frames for the bicycle. At the same time, on an activist level, the book promotes a participatory politics of bicycle technology and a less car-centered view of personal transportation.

The biggest thing to hit the business world since Henry Ford introduced assembly-line production is the concept of megamedia—the merging of the computer, telephone, software, entertainment, and cable TV industries. The technological convergence of companies from all corners of business has sparked the most sensational corporate shakeouts in history.

Now in an engrossing tale of big ideas, big egos, and the billions to be won or lost in the exploding communications industry, USA Today reporter Kevin Maney answers these questions and more. This insightful account includes:

Writing in a taut, hard-driving journalistic style, Maney takes us behind the scenes at leading companies for the first inside look at the shakeout in the communications industry. Megamedia Shakeout cuts through the hype to bring us a bold vision of the future and a clear-sighted, practical assessment of the exciting business and investment opportunities being opened up by the communications revolution.

Kevin Maney has been chronicling the communications revolution for several years now, and he has interviewed all the key players involved. In this book, he pieces together a coherent picture of where the industry is headed, explains the technologies and technological wonders involved, and offers a highly plausible vision of what the future will look like.

"Megamedia is the information superhighway, 500-channel cable systems and interactive TV all rolled into one. It is telephone companies, cable companies, entertainment companies and computer companies. All are part of the same converging industry. All will go through astounding change over the next decade as we witness the dawn of the Communications Age."—Kevin Maney
