A "must-have" for the PSAT too.......2002-08-29
Yes, this is an outstanding guide to prep you for the ACT; however I have also found in invaluable in my tutoring students for the PSAT. The PSAT has a writing section (which includes grammar and essay correction neither of which is found on the SAT I). Many PSAT/SAT prep books prepare students well for the Critical Reading, the Sentence Completions, and the Analogy questions. But these same prep guides fall way short in prepping for the PSAT "Writing Section". The ACT on the other hand has a PSAT-similar writing section and prepping for this is a "joy" using the ACT Insider's Guide. Not only does the Insider's guide have a wealth of mock writing section problems, but it also has a far and away best grammar tutorial included as an appendix. I insist that my PSAT students read this appendix and do assignments in the ACT writing section of this book. The grammar appendix is an ACT (PSAT) focused treatment of grammar; yet I've had many students tell me that this appendix has helped them in their high school English courses and has provided backfill on grammar concepts that have heretofore escaped them. The Math section of the book contains many nuggets (mixture and work problems as examples) that the more "involved" student would find worthwhile in prepping for a high score on the SAT I or the PSAT. This book is fifteen bucks very well spent.

How to Audit the Process-Based QMS
ASIN: 0873895304 |
Book Description
This book takes a brand new look at the entire audit process for both auditors and auditees. No longer will auditees need to feel like they must comply with an auditor's checklist without understanding why compliance is helpful to, or necessary for, the organization. Likewise, auditors will learn a fresh approach for developing feedback and reports that are more than lists of failings, but are value-added assessments of an organization's strengths and areas for improvement. By educating them as customers of the audit, this guide teaches auditees how to get the most value from their audit. Auditors will receive guidance about how to make their job something organizations will appreciate as a tool they can use to improve their company.
This complete how-to guide will help auditors and organizations plan for their internal or external audit. O'Hanlon himself is a registered IRCA Lead Auditor and Lead Auditor trainer who teaches you the previously undiscussed areas of the audit process. Additionally, this book will show both auditors and auditees how to make your audit a process that creates value for the organization, not just a tool to ensure compliance. Internal, second- and third-party auditors and auditees can use the numerous frequently asked questions to prepare for the situations they will encounter during an actual audit.
Customer Reviews:
Practical approach -- completely implementable!.......2003-05-14
Its not often a book comes along that not only is a pleasure to read but actually gives sound advice that can be understood and readily implemented 'straight from the page'! Tim O'Hanlon has provided such a text for those of us involved in ISO 9001:2000 audits. The practical approach that brings auditing into the realm of business reality makes this an immmensely useful read. Its on my compulsory reading list for clients who want to revamp their auditing process so as to realise the value-adding potential of audits. My advice -- buy it, read it then use the knowledge to improve your processes!
When they said this book would help; they weren't kidding!.......2002-05-21
I was given the job of planning the transition of our existing system to ISO 9001:2000 and someone said "Read Tim O'Hanlon's book". I did and I am so pleased. I got much more than I bargained for. When I saw the title I thought it was not what I needed but I was wrong..it was the only thing I needed. This guy really knows what he is going on about.
At last I get it!.......2002-05-07
For years I just did not get the point of auditors. I thought they were like police officers trying to find the culprits. This book makes it clear, their role is to add value and what's more, this book tells you how they should do it. Dr. O'Hanlon has opended the door for effective audits.
Dr O'Hanlon's book is ensightful and refreshing!.......2002-01-16
This book is a breath of fresh air in an area made stuffy by boring quality books that make no sense unless you already know your stuff and if you did you wouldn't buy the book in the first place!
Dr. O'Hanlon seems to realise this and explains everything using easy to understand terms and useful diagrams. I heartily recommend purchasing this book...it certainly provided me with an interesting perspective of the auditing system!
Quality Audits for Iso 9001:2000 : Making Compliance Value-A.......2001-12-12
This book offers a fresh approach for auditors. I like that O'Hanlon is saying 'hey make your audit worthwhile for your company. Don't be afraid of the auditor.'
Nice diagrams are included and book is easy to understand.

The bar code is now at the core of commerce, transportation, warehousing, manufacturing, and retailing, and its influence has spread to virtually every industry in the industrialized world. When this voluntary product code was first introduced in 1974, it led to the worldwide revolution in supply chain efficiency.
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of this now universally embraced technology, the Smithsonian Institution sponsored a symposium. Gathered together in this volume, are the thoughts of eight speakers--with hands-on experience--concerning the development, diffusion, adoption, and applications of a truly groundbreaking technology. The volume concludes with papers from a panel discussion among those involved in creating the Universal Product Code, the foundation of the bar code.

Book Description
This important new book examines a period of dramatic economic change in Britain during the Thatcher era. The Conservatives' free market policies generally improved the performance of the economy in Britain, but some parts of the country still did poorly. Terrence Casey argues that this was as a result of variations in social contexts--a combination of institutions, interests and economic culture. Social context is a crucial intervening variable between the policies selected by decision-makers and the performance of economies, thus the key for enhancing prosperity is the proper match between economic policies and the context in which they are implemented.

The Japanese Mind: Understanding Contemporary Culture
ASIN: 1840645806 |
Book Description
Japan has succeeded in many industries through its renowned production system. Competitive advantage, however, in the new economy is shifting from production to demand-based capabilities. One such new industry is pharmaceuticals, where Japan has been a resounding failure, both from public policy and corporate strategy perspectives. This book provides a detailed examination of how Japan has socially constructed its pharmaceutical industry, the economic and political bases of this construction and the consequences for corporate innovation and performance.
Perhaps the starkest indication of this failure of Japanese public policy is the emergence of a new drug lag in that nation. Almost 90 percent of important new drugs are unavailable in Japan, despite their widespread diffusion throughout the rest of the world. Analysis of this drug lag confirms that it is not due to government discrimination against Western firms, but rather is only one of many consequences of failed Japanese industrial policies.
The author presents an analysis of the nature, causes and consequences of the new drug lag in Japan. He contrasts the problem with the one experienced in the US and looks at the powerful role played by domestic politics in shaping the pharmaceutical industry. The last chapters look at the various remedies available. Academics, experts in government and industry, researchers and students of industrial policy, economics, public health and trade policy will find the examination of this important industry both informative and enlightening.

Book Description
In the e-business economy, managers are faced with too much data and too little meaningful information about markets, customers, products, company operations and finances. Their greatest challenge is to identify, manage and use the right information to compete. Information management is too important to a company's performance and growth to be delegated primarily to IT, information or financial specialists. This book is based on the idea that information management is the responsibility of every manager. Managers may not be IT specialists, but they must create the conditions for effective information use that creates real business value. Donald Marchand and his colleagues at IMD invite you to learn your information responsibilities, so your company can use information faster, better and smarter than the competition. By using the business framework of 'strategic information alignment,' this book shows how information can create business value through delighting customers, being more innovative, managing risks and being the low-cost leader in your markets and industries. Learn the why, what and how of better information use and management in your company. At last, here is a book about managing information written specifically for business managers. Developed from the executive teaching, consulting and real world research of a team of faculty who work with the world's leading global companies every day, this book provides managers with the mindset and guidance to leverage the company's capabilities to use and manage information to create business value.

Wide look at IS/IT Management Issues.......2001-09-22
This book is a collection of essays that cover the full spectrum if IS/IT management challenges and practices. The essays are grouped into three Part and further subdivided into topic sections within their respective parts. Although the main audience is IS/IT management, this book should also be read by business process owners who are the consumers of IS/IT services.
Part I is brief and sets the context by discussing the larger issues of competing with information and how to use information to create business value. This is the foundation of the rest of the book and is aimed at IS/IT managers and [in my opinion] business process owners. Part II (Putting Information to Work) begins with Section A's four chapters that tie information as processed and provided to the business to business goals and objectives. The value of these chapters is they educate the IS/IT manager in the business value of the services and products that they are providing and showing them the bigger picture of their roles in supporting business objectives. Section B (Creating New Reality) consists of two chapters that touch upon knowledge management issues to a degree, and certainly illustrate how information can be leveraged into actionable knowledge. Section C's two chapters address cost reduction, while Section D devotes two chapters to risk management and control.
The most interesting portion of this book is Part III, which is focused on how to use information as a competitive advantage. The five chapters in this Part starts with the basics of competing with information, and ends with a look at building e-commerce capabilities.
Overall, this book will provide IS/IT managers with a good foundation in business uses of information, which promotes a better understanding of IS/IT's role as a service provider and information manager. This is important because, from what I've observed at many clients, IS/IT is focusing more and more on tools and technology, or infrastructure building. The direct result of this focus is a growing chasm between what's important to the business and what IS/IT perceives its role to be. The essays in this book will go a long way towards educating IS/IT management and refocusing them on what is really important.
