Carol Carter, a publishing-industry executive and the author of a half-dozen employment guides, believes college students who truly want to succeed after graduation must actually start preparing as soon as they begin their post-high school education. In Majoring in the Rest of Your Life, she presents a series of suggestions designed to help these students move from their often unfocused freshman years to landing the job of their dreams. Chapters deal with defining interests and goals, balancing academic and personal lives, aiming for useful extracurricular activities and part-time jobs, networking, traveling, and, eventually, sending out résumés and going on interviews. Carter certainly defines the linkage between school world and real world in a way that makes the connection click, and then provides the tools (including six appendices containing more than 50 pages of additional information and resources) that just might make it stick. --Howard Rothman

      Book Description

MRL is a practical strategy to get you from your first semester of freshman year to your first job. the classroom is not the only place to learn in college, and MRL shows you how to make the most of opportunities to discover what you enjoy doing, get practical experience, and meet people. The author's sympathetic, informal, and often very funny, style draws from her own success story as she expertly guides students throught the steps to a rewarding college experience and career.

5 out of 5 stars No better guide for the directionless college student.......1999-08-08

Teachers, do you have a student who just doesn't know what direction to take in life? Do they remind you of a boat adrift without a rudder? Carol Carter has written an excellent book aimed at that student. Majoring in the Rest of Your Life; Career Secrets for College Students, is outstanding in filling the need of providing a good overall sense of direction for the drifting college student.

Many of us have been there, or know others who have been there: entering college with no clue what to major in. Or picture this scenario: a recent college graduate who has no idea where he or she will get their first job. This book seeks to deal with the situation in which those students find themselves.

Carol Carter is Vice President and Publisher of Student Success and Career Development at Prentice Hall. She is particularly suited to writing this book, with unique personal qualifications based on her own experience and her work at Prentice Hall.

The book walks through interest and ability inventories to help students discern strengths and weaknesses. Tips on obtaining first jobs, networking, and handling rejection are interwoven with advice on internships, time management, and resumes.

Succinctly, we can't think of a better book for high school seniors and college students.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......1999-07-29

This is one of my all time favorite career/college planning books. Along with MAJOR IN SUCCESS it is informative, while also interesting reading. The author makes the student want to continue on with the book, and the "learning" process is almost effortless. An excellent resource for all underclass college students and college-bound high school seniors. Mary Becelia, Mary Washington College Office of Career Services, Fredericksburg VA

            Book Description

This controversial book strongly criticizes recent developments in the study of organizational structure in the United States. It concentrates on five theories that are fashionable: population-ecology, institutional, resource dependence, agency and transaction costs economics. Each is shown to be flawed, either in its logic, or by studies of actual organizations. These sharply different theories have fragmented the field and present a negative view of managers. Lex Donaldson argues for an integrated theory built around structural contingency theory, that places managers in a more positive light.

            4 out of 5 stars A for effort.......2007-08-28

Lex Donaldson laments the fragmentation of organizational theory in the United States (p. 1). Among the theories in common use at the time, Donaldson identifies four major ones, each operating under its own, distinct paradigm: population-ecology theory, institutional theory, resource dependence theory, and organizational economics (p. xi). He argues that they should be abandoned in favor of a previously dominant paradigm - the one underlying structural contingency theory - and sketches out a theory expanded by bits and pieces from competing theories (ch. 7).

The major difficulty with this book is that it cannot stand by itself. Donaldson's arguments hinge on an accurate and thorough description of an on-going dispute. Not only does he need to know and fairly portray arguments that exist in five distinct bodies of literature, he must also convince the reader that he succeeded - which ultimately seems to be a futile effort as the uninvolved reader is left guessing whether Donaldson's attacks on some elusive, shapeshifting theory actually prove anything, while a reader with a solid stake in that theory will likely assert that they do not.

One does not need to assume malice or any deficiencies on Donaldson's part to recognize that this is not a task for any single author. In order for Donaldson to assess the respective merits of different theories, he needs an agreement about what each of them is - that is, a consensus within the dominant coalition of the field. This necessity arises from Donaldson's vision of a "coherent, integrated body of knowledge" (p. 5) as a single, dominating paradigm and one associated body of theory. Unfortunately, the field of organizational studies as described by Donaldson consists of several competing factions; some of them seem not interested in consolidation, while those seeking consolidation expect it to take place on their own terms (Donaldson himself is no exception).

Donaldson's focus is on contributions of various theories to his own area of interest. This may explain why he shows little inclination to explore different scopes and motives in theory building, even though he notes his difficulties in drawing the boundaries of each theory on several occasions (e.g. pp. 53, 83). He never adequately reflects the difference between descriptive and prescriptive theories and hence misses one of the better options for - at least partially - reconciling them: Structural contingency is prescriptive; by matching contingencies with appropriate responses, it describes the best way for an organization to reach a given goal. And while Donaldson and other proponents of that theory like to phrase their propositions as if they were naturally followed, there would be no point in Donaldson's "guidelines to managers with pressing, practical problems" if organizations were always able to figure out the proper response to a contingency (p. 5).

Population-ecology theorists, on the other hand, do not offer advice to managers; they describe various reasons why the guidelines put forward by structural contingency theory may be difficult to implement (p. 44). Institutional theory, too, is descriptive; it acknowledges that managers effect change and sees imitation as the primary mechanism, which doesn't contradict structural contingency theory; after all, when managers follow Donaldson's empirically valid guidelines, they are mimicking the behavior of successful organizations. Resource-dependence theory emphasizes the importance of external and internal dependencies and their impact on goal setting, shedding some light on the obstacles a manager or an organization may face when trying to implement the recipes provided by structural contingency theory.

But Donaldson is very reluctant to expand the scope of his favored theory. It is telling that he wonders why it would be a crucial issue who will control an organization (p. 135), and that his "integrated explanatory model" is one of organizational structure with strategy as a contingency (p. 206). To him, simply put, an organization is a structure designed to serve a specific purpose. The creation of strategy does not figure in his model, nor does the implementation of change in the organization. This narrow view is quite remarkable given the ambitions implied in the first chapter, where Donaldson finds the country's slipping economic performance "in a way surprising since US organizations have had the benefit of being able to draw on a large body of organizational theory and research generated in US universities", only to find the explanation in "an outbreak of irrationality" in the "US academic work on the topic of organization structure" (p. 1). Some help with determining the appropriate organizational structures is all it takes to put the US economy back on track, or so he would have us believe. Donaldson's hubris easily matches the one he finds in Hirshleifer (p. 165).

The discussion above indicates that Donaldson is not on a path to consensus. A man calling an influential, competing paradigm "fatally flawed theoretically and empirically" (p. 127) is not likely to successfully forge a dominant coalition anytime soon. His criticism will hardly convince the adherents of any paradigm. The contrast between his vision of a shared paradigm and his glaring short-comings as a uniter are curious. His criticism may fail to convince the adherents of each paradigm, but it may well confirm their beliefs that all the other theories deserve to die. A paranoid reader might be forgiven for suspecting that Donaldson's cunning plan is to fan the flames and spread ammunition liberally, in the hope that structural contingency theory will emerge as the sole survivor of an all-out war.

Donaldson may be biased and over the top sometimes, but many of his criticisms are spot on. Unfortunately, a solution will require some form of consensus, and that is not a task for one well-read man with strong opinions. Four stars for a rarity - a decent, albeit biased overview over all major theories, and for thinking big.

I would recommend this to anyone new to operations management in a production environment. The book does a good job of covering the key concepts of inventory management and production planning in a quick and easy to read format.

            5 out of 5 stars Systems Implementation & Review.......2000-06-28

I read this book as part of a Masters degree, comparing actual methods with "The Proven Path". It is the only humorous book I have read on methodologies and the concepts are of relevance to all systems implementation - not just manufacturing. I thought the book was easy to read and very interesting - in short, it is excellent. A must for those pursuing a production career.

5 out of 5 stars Great manufacturing management book.......1999-12-09

The book does not go into great detail but it is worth reading because it explains everything you need to understand how a manufactoring company has to work in order to achieve full controll over its business processes. The examples are very simple but very usefull. It is also a good book for people that do not have a background in manufacturing because it explains everything you need in order to understand the main subjects.

            5 out of 5 stars A tremendous book for tomorrow's leaders, today!.......1998-11-04

This is a great book that encapsulates many of the latest innovations in manufacturing management. Including - JIT, MRP, MRPII, MPS, and many others. A must read for the forward-looking manager.

Armed forces across the globe engage in economic activities both in times of war and peace. This book provides a critical analysis of this phenomenon, comparing experiences with "military business" from four continents (Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America). Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the volume shows the implications of "military business" for civil-military relations, good governance and international development policies.

                  Book Description

In this pioneering work, Gustavus Myers lays bare the corruption, swindling, land deals, and bribery that are at the basis of Canadian history. This is Canada's past seen through the eyes of a muckraker, and in it the heros of other histories appear in quite a different light.

This book was first published in 1914--in the United States. It has never before been published in Canada. Canadian historians have mostly ignored, suppressed, or mocked it. But history is not the preserve of apologists for big business and the political parties, and A History of Canadian Wealth is certain to be widely read and recognized at last as a classic.

A landmark revisionist history of Canada, A History of Canadian Wealth remains as lively and startling as it was when first published.

                                  Book Description

Cutting Edge Advertising is the first and only book providing a step-by-step plan to create cutting edge print advertising for the twenty-first Century. Over 300 world famous print ads are discussed and analysed in depth by the people who created them - the Gods of advertising now, not forty years ago. Internationally respected names like David Abbott, Tim Delaney, John Hegarty, Gary Goldsmith, Bob Barrie, Neil French and Jeff Goodby - from the world's most admired advertising agencies - share their secrets in a carefully structured, inspirational journey through the contemporary truths of doing great ads.

The book serves as a reference text for creatives, clients and colleges. No other single title covers the subject so completely - from research and strategy, through to conceptualising and crafting. For creatives in every agency of the world, the book provides a step-by-step methodology which can be applied immediately in their daily work. It means they can stop copying and start creating their own cutting edge work. By learning how to think like the masters, they can become masters themselves. For advertisers with brands to build, the book offers hundreds of insights into how the most internationally renowned campaigns were crafted. As more clients take direct control of their own advertising, the book arms them with vital methodology and a new way to think. In the author's words, "This is the book I wished I'd had when I started in the business." Unique features in the book include: 1. A chapter which demolishes the myths and formulae of how advertising should be done. For the first time in one book, world creative leaders explain why methodologies and precepts developed in the 1950s and 60s are no longer valid - and why many are actually harmful in today's context.

                                  2. A chapter which explains how brand building has changed. Exciting new brands have emerged, displacing old ones. The strategists share their secrets and explain why a different kind of advertising is needed. 3. A chapter which actually tells you how to get ideas. No other advertising book has ever done this. The creative process is demystified. 4. Two chapters devoted to the craft of art direction and copy, where experts tell what to do and what not, which rules to break, and which rules never to. 5. A chapter of inspiring advice for everyone in advertising: how a cutting edge career can be nurtured and accelerated. The leaders of the industry discuss their own fears of failure, and what it takes to succeed.

                                  6. No other advertising reference work provides 300 contemporary ads from the best agencies in the USA, UK, Europe and Australia. Details of how the ads are created and crafted are explained, sharing the decisions which had to be made along the way. The advice of the masters are expressed in simple, frank and (sometimes) provocative terms. 7. No other book of this kind addresses such issues as consumer psychology, how to strategise, how brands are being built; how cutting edge thinking can be applied to global campaigns; how to build a world class career and reputation.

                                  Cutting Edge Advertising-Jim Aitchison

Quoting liberally from several dozen of the advertising world's most acclaimed copywriters and art directors, Mr. Aitchison does a brilliant job of explaining how the best print advertising is developed. In the first few chapters he deals with the subject on something of a higher, philosophical plane. But promptly thereafter, he settles down into an almost tutorial approach; working his way from how to arrive at an insight, how to transform that insight into an idea, and finally, how to craft that idea into a great ad-visually and in its writing.

Being an Australian, he is well positioned to tap into the enormous volume of great print advertising that has come out of the Asian markets-Singapore, Honk Kong and so forth. But he also references many of the best print advertising that has come out of the U.S. and U.K.
And while we're on the subject of print, it's worth noting that although it is the author's avowed intention to provide readers with "how to create the world's best print....", much of what he says can easily be applied to any effort in marketing communications.

All in all, an extremely valuable tool for beginning copywriters and art directors. Not a bad one for their superiors, who sometimes struggle for the exact words to explain why an ad is or isn't working. And certainly worth reading by the clients who finance all this print advertising-cutting edge and, in far too many cases, ham-handed.
                                  Good show!

5 out of 5 stars Cut and thrust.......2001-02-14

Wit, wisdom, and style. Candid remarks. A warts and all approach, and a feel that gets under the skin of the beast called advertising. It's worth the purchase price alone for the tale of Neil French and XO beer ... a study in pure genius if you ask me, and I'm not just saying that because of a burning desire to become a copywriter, I'm saying that for one simple reason: it's true.

Yes, the reproductions could have been a little better in a few places, but it's what Hegarty, Barrie, French and Abbott (to name but a few), have to say that's more important, and the book is riddled with insights - so much so that many of the personalities simply leap off the page and slap you about the face.

As an aspiring creative it was comforting to read other reviews of this book from current players in SE Asia (reviews I read after having read the book), and I violently disagree with the reviewer who said the book was bollocks. What nonsense. And no, it's not "Hey Whipple, Squeeze This" - another marvelous book - nor could it be, for the simple reason that this book has a completely different voice.

From the seasoned pro to the up-and-coming young turk, this book has something for everyone. Regardless of how long you've been in the business there's an awful lot to learn, and I don't think this book can be faulted in any way other than a few dodgy bits of repro. If you're serious about the ad world this is probably one of the best books you could read. And read it you should - at least three times.

I came away from this book refreshed and energised. It's a text book, a reference book, a source of inspiration and something to go back to again and again. And if you can't be arsed with this book the world of advertising probably isn't for you.

Well I don't know about the rest of you, but I thought Cutting Edge Advertising was absolute bollocks. I did like the cover, though. Very clever the way the word advertising is put in the shape of a dagger.

5 out of 5 stars If You don't Read It, You Missed It!.......2000-09-17

                                  This is an excellent book.

Well-researched. Filled with new insights and creative philosophies about advertising in the Creative Economy.

The author is a practitioner in advertising, who has a passion for rules-breaking advertising.

I think this book will become a classic, when more people find out how good it is.

I recently got into radio sales, and I bought this book prior to taking the position. Unfortunately this book was all about the creative process of developing radio advertisement and not about selling them. So, great for creative side, not so much sales.

This book is a must read for all management students and should be a mandatory text at the Masters level. Besides providing the basic theories of business ethics and corporate social responsibility, the authors have included a number of thought-provoking issues that are relevant today at all levels within corporate management. These issues must be addressed by the reasonable and responsible managers if they are to serve the best interests of their corporations, the employees, their customers, the community, and society at large. This book is a guide for managers in making informed and educated decisions on the moral dilemmas that face them. It provides insights into a safer path through the twisting road of compliance policy not on what the law permits or prohibits but on reasoned ethics of corporate responsibility.

                                    Book Description

This book tackles one of the most pressing public policy issues of our time: the reform of regulatory and enforcement practice. Malcolm K. Sparrow shows how prescriptions for reform that are centered on the concepts of customer service and process improvement fail to take account of the distinctive character of regulatory responsibilities—which involve the delivery of obligations rather than just services.

Sparrow identifies a central notion at the heart of a new regulatory craftsmanship: "pick important problems and fix them." This simple approach presents complex implementation challenges with profound consequences for the way regulators organize their work and report their performance. The author explores the underlying nature of the risk-control or problem-solving art, and specifies the organizational infrastructure and managerial practices required to place effective risk control at the heart of routine agency operations.

The Regulatory Craft will be especially valuable for regulatory and law-enforcement practitioners, as well as legislators, students, and others who care about the nature and quality of regulatory practice.

4 out of 5 stars re-thinking the role of government.......2000-07-14

Author Malcolm Sparrow suggests something so simple about the role of government that it's revolutionary -- agencies should be in the business of finding important problems and fixing them.

                                    Simple -- but difficult.

Anyone who works in government would tell you they solve problems all the time. But most objective looks at government show that government's primary job is to "implement programs." Those programs often deftly solve problems. Yet they leave much undone. It is the undone problems that Sparrow's book deals with.

Sparrow is an old cop, turned top-level educator. He's got a doctorate and teaches at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He is a recognized expert in results-based reform of government. Personally, he is glib and practical.

His experience with policing seems to drive his philosophy. At the crux is this quote from his mentor, Herman Goldstein:

"...policing becomes more effective if police, rather than processing 911 calls one after another and in isolation, could learn to identify underlying patterns and then fashion tailor-made solutions that prevent recurrences." (page 72)

Sparrow shows how identifying patterns and fashioning tailor-made solutions is the crux for most government -- not just police. He ampley cites examples from environmental agencies, customs, OSHA and others to show this. He tells the real-life obstacles to achieving this, too (page 112). Overall, he tells how government could do better and who's doing it.

The book implies a unique slant on deterrence. While getting tough may achieve a deterrence effect, too often it happens after the evil deed. Sparrow suggests that government deter before the deed. How? Analyze patterns of unsolved problems, then tailor interventions to deter BEFORE the problem happens. This is not to rule out enforcement punch -- just to focus it on those against whom it's most effective. He shows that it can be done using case studies.

Sparrow's thinking should appeal to the pragmatist. This book is not pie-in-the-sky theory. It blends top-level thinking and on the ground experience. If you think government could be doing better, you could do worse than picking up a copy of "The Regulatory Craft."

The book is almost a handbook or guide to those who are planning to improve a quality system on their company and to establish a perfect system to retrieve the documents/records used to record this process.

                                            Book Description

How good companies build a culture of integrity

In the present environment of corporate governance brought on by high-profile executive scandals, this book makes a strong case for encouraging business leaders to manage beyond compliance. Achieving the bare minimum of compliance isn't enough. By making corporate responsibility and integrity a strategic priority-rather than something companies are forced to comply with-companies can realize tangible financial returns and benefits. This book provides practical advice, effective tools, and time-tested best practices for approaching corporate integrity strategically and managing an integrity program on a day-to-day basis.

There is a growing realization that compliance with the rules is only a minimum standard of performance, and an increasing demand from stakeholders at every level — shareholders, employees, customers along the entire supply chain, consumers, advocacy groups, and the local community at large — for more transparency and accountability from corporations.

But most businesses have little experience and few tools to deal with the urgent demand to increase corporate responsibility. Corporate Integrity provides practical tools and proven processes to manage complex integrity dilemmas and support implementation:
