        I had a friend pass this book on to me, when I was about halfway through my PhD. The solace I found in the author's case studies' and psychological analysis of the 'stages' one goes through during the PhD process was invaluable. Additionally, I found the section on the actual writing of the PhD thesis to be very practical. My only regret about the book was that I hadn't read it sooner.

        This book should be required reading for anyone considering doing a PhD.

        This book is a quick read and certainly recommended to anyone considering taking up the daunting task of getting a PhD. It is not the book, that will give you specific instructions on what you need to do to get a PhD (there aren't any), but it does give you a heads up on some challenges (e.g. feeling of failure) you will face as well as some tips and tricks (e.g. managing your supervisor) that you can apply along the way.

        Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to grow up and be a doctor,
        cure people in ER just like Dr. John Carter. In fact,
        it was the death of Dr. Mark Greene that made me realize
        how much of a waste I am to society.
        I just finished reading this great great book and I think I am
        all set to do a PhD in the United States of the Kingdom; 12 steps
        closer to my dream.

        Thanks to this great book, I have it all planned in
        12 baby steps.

        I am going to (1) take it easy, (2) look for a great place
        to study, (3) search hard and shop around for an adviser,
        (4) write my dissertation, (5) do my research...and so
        on, if you want to figure out your 12 step program, you
        should definitely read this book.

        This book is perfect if you are going to apply for a Phd in Britain. If you are going to do so, buy it!. However, in my opinion is not worth to buy it if you are already a phd student or you are not in the British phd system. In this case I suggest you to borrow the book or to find it in your library for a fast read. I think that the book is a little expensive for the information you will find in it. It is full of obvious advices that you probably already know, but it is not bad to see them written.

        As I see it, the most important things in the book are: the definition of phd, the chapter "How to do research", the psychological aspects related with the phd process, and the chapter "The form of a Phd thesis".

        The worst things are: the chapter "How to survive in a predominantly British, white, male, full academic enviroment"; I think the information reported in this chapter is common in all social and professional environments and not specific to the phd, people that belong to minorities or are under harassment situations can easily find information in more specific literature. This chapter could be substituted by a more usefull one that could be titled: "Before the Phd"; there could be inserted important information that is not present now. i.e. in science phd's is very important to have a strong mathematical background "before" you start or to have adecuate English writing/reading skill "in any case"(so you should work hard before the phd if your mother language is not English).

        As conclusion, I think that the book is helpful in general and it is worth to have a look on it; a valuable point is that it is the result of a profound analysis of the British Phd process, but in another hand this can be counteractive if applied to non-british phd.

        Essential for all global undergraduates (who are technically junior researchers), postgraduates and academics at all levels. The book increases understanding of different elements of the research process from what you need to know about applying to do research and choosing a supervisor to information on the final oral (viva) examination. The book is written in an accessible way and provides guidance for those who want to continue researching. Are you considering a new research project and need help or encouragement? This excellent book will give you that and so much more besides.

          After reading this book I can only hope that I will be lucky enough to have a student with severe and multiple disabilities in my classroom some day. The book has a lot of practical ideas, simple and easy to use and at the same time there are a lot of references to actual research. This is a very inspiring book!

          Dr. Downing does a wonderful job in this book of offering
          teachers practical information. She has a section devoted to
          each stage of education from preschool to high school & within
          each section offers specific tips on how to modify both the
          environment & the curriculum. She also addresses common
          concerns such as dealing with disruptive behavior & a lack of
          adequate planning time or support staff resources.
          A great addition to any teacher's resource library!

              Recent literature has emphasized the projected changes in organizational demographics and the fact that globalization also is changing the face of organizational landscapes. Taken together these trends are serving to increase the need to understand and appreciate cultural diversity in virtually all organizations. Many books already exist that attempt to address this topic. Each one attempts to provide a guide to dealing with a variety of racial, ethnic, or cultural backgrounds. The intent of Sims and Dennehy's book is to go beyond offering ideas or to serve simply as a guide to improve the management of diversity. Thus, a major goal of this book is to have its readers reflect on their personal diversity and difference experiences and to create a forum for answers and questions on the value of diversity and differences for all. The main thread that ties everything together in this book is the strategy of creating value through repeated emphasis on our need to look beyond valuing and managing diversity to the interdependency of a variety of individual variables that shape our lives. The book begins by offering a bridge-building model as a tool that colleges and universities can use to decrease the alienation experienced by minority students on predominantly white campuses and to increase the social consciousness of all institutional constituents. The next chapter suggests that diversity is essential to learning, and good conversation is a powerful way to learn from diversity. The book then introduces a model that seeks to place the issue of diversity management as one part of an overall development change process. The notion that the success of some organizations in enhancing diversity is dependent upon the vision and strength of management is emphasized in the next chapter, which, by taking a different perspective, presents the argument that current corporate infrastructures do not promote diversity. Unless a company builds new internal support systems that encourage diversity of thought and action, employees hired to "make the company more diverse" will merely be homogenized into the prevailing culture. In the following chapter the role of training in U.S. organizations is discussed as a major component in increasing the recognition, understanding, and appreciation of diversity and difference. The concept of "difference-based approach to advocacy" and its relation to issues of gender are introduced as cornerstones of creating work environments that are supportive of employees' needs to balance work and family. The next chapter provides data for analysis of the expatriate's learning experience and applies the learning from expatriate experiences to those issues faced by minorities in a domestic setting. A need to create new intellectual diversity that focuses on foreign language skills applicable to the needs of economic, scientific, and technological markets is emphasized in the next chapter. Next, a comparison is made of the decision-making processes and practices of Japanese and American managers at a Japanese company in the United States. The author's pioneering findings can be generalized to understand decision-making in different cultures and organizations. The role of diversity educator is then discussed and the author persuasively argues that active learner participation, self-disclosure, and a trusting supportive environment are prerequisites to understanding and appreciating diversity. The book concludes with a review of the important points discussed by the contributors to this book, offers questions in need of answers, and identifies future issues on diversity and differences.

                  The Sum of All Differences is an excellent book that introduces people to diversity's impact on public organizations. There is a lack of awareness and understanding about diversity and Audrey L.Mathews makes diversity issues easy to understand and also gives solutions to diversity issues and problems that many of us encounter in todays workforce. I strongly recommend this book.

                        Creating that edge over competitors under hypercompetitve markets conditions is imperative to survival or domination. Competitive advantage can arise from effective positioning, cost leadership, differentiation or even the time taken from product-conceptualisation to product-realisation. To achieve success in these external-oriented strategies, the organisation itself must possess the necessary resources coupled with the appropriate orientation. The views offered in the book raises several interesting points on developing and preserving those resources so as to offer the organisation that competitive edge.

                                    Until the last decades of the nineteenth century, Mexico faced the twin problems of chronic political instability and slow economic growth. During the period of the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship (1876-1911), however, a series of institutional reforms reignited growth and created rents that enabled the Díaz government to threaten its opponents with military force or to buy them off.

                                    These institutional reforms came out of distinctly political processes, which often had to be brokered among multiple groups of economic elites and regional political bosses. Therefore, they were often structured to encourage investment by specifying property rights or creating streams of rents for particular entrepreneurs. In short, Porfirian Mexico is an excellent natural laboratory in which to investigate not only how institutional change can foment economic growth, but also how specific features of political institutions give rise to specific economic institutions that have both positive and negative effects on growth and distribution.

                                    In fact, the distributional consequences of the Porfirian regime gave rise to the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917, which produced a further round of dramatic changes in Mexico’s political institutions. These changes, in turn, restructured the institutions that governed property rights and those that determined the allocation of rents generated by property rights. This book aims both to identify the crucial institutions and to measure their economic effects.

                                    In addressing these issues, the contributors to this volume employ theoretical insights from the New Institutional Economics and statistical hypothesis-testing as well as traditional archival methods. Thus, in addition to advancing the field of Latin American economic history by studying the interaction of political and economic institutions during the period 1870-1930, the book also makes a methodological contribution by using analytic tools not previously employed in the literature.

                                            Although the author is Brittish, his major contribution was to provide such a detailed account of corporate governance practices in Japan, Germany and France where literature is rarer. US and UK summaries are useful if you want to get all the essentials in no more than 40-50 pages. Competing corp. gov. reviews of countries are too superficial compared to this one. For the corp. gov. country analysis I am writing I elected his format as role-model, and his depth and insightfulness as a goal! I just wished I had the same kinds of contacts (in the country I am writing about) Charkham seems to have in ALL 5 countries.
