    Book Description

Littleton, Colorado. Conyers, Georgia. Pearl, Mississippi. Jonesboro, Arkansas. Springfield, Oregon. In the aftermath of the latest incidences of school violence, Kids Killing Kids: Managing Violence and Gangs in Schools tackles the tough questions: How do we find out which students are potentially violent? What do we do with them? Is there an epidemic of children whose psychological problems go undetected until they erupt in violence? Are the parents really responsible? Parents, administrators, fellow students, the media: we all look for someone to blame. Kids who look or act different fall under suspicion. The cry goes out for more gun control, less violence in television, movies and video games. President Clinton calls a conference to address violence in the media. Add gangs to this mix and the situation becomes explosive. A factor in inner-city schools for years, new evidence suggests that gangs are now recruiting new members from suburban schools. Violence from conflicts between rival gangs adds to the already volatile atmosphere in schools. While not all violence can be anticipated, there is no substitute for being proactive. Kids Killing Kids: Managing Violence and Gangs in Schools serves as a guide for detection, intervention, and prevention - providing solutions for our schools.

      Book Description

High-tech products have historically had notoriously poor design. Fortunately, companies have recently started to embrace user-centered design practices. This transition hasn't been smooth; many companies have difficulty transferring good design into final, shippable product. There is a political/cultural disconnect between the outward corporate desire for good design and the internal corporate culture that implements it. The Simplicity Shift is about moving the company culture to value, discover and implement simplicity, and to create a well-designed product. For most companies, product design is not paramount; it is something locked into a "design department" and approached as a sub-task of the larger sequential process. For companies to truly create breakthrough, easy-to-use products, they must elevate design so that its terms and tools are shared by everyone in the team. Design is a strategic tool that thereby becomes a part of how every company employee thinks, acts--and most importantly--makes decisions. Product managers and professional designers will benefit from the tools and examples about making design work in a production company.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch design booklet.......2004-12-10

This book contains twelve small chapters on the adequate design of technical devices, the design of good and foremost well usable "user interfaces". Each of these chapters is a fast read (maybe half an hour), but contains enough substance to fill an entire book of good quality.

It is always good to remind oneself in regular intervals, of what excellent quality means. This book helps you.

I read it from the perspective of a software developer. After reading this I now think, that I really do finally understand the importance of use cases (see Ivar Jacobson). Before I was reading a book by Kent Beck on Test Driven Development. Also here the Jenson Book sheds extra illumination. A test is a use of a program.

You might find the book expensive for so few pages. These pages are more than worth it.

          Book Description

The greatest textile manufacturing centre in America used to be, not Lowell, Massachusetts, but Philadelphia, where in 1880 over eight hundred textile firms employed over fifty thousand workers producing fabrics, carpets, yarns, and knit-goods of every description. Proprietary Capitalism presents a careful reconstruction of the rise of textile capitalism in the Quaker City, whose distinguishing features were immigrant family firms, flexible strategies for production, and an emphasis on skill, quality, and market responsiveness. The small and middle-sized firms in Philadelphia, far from being displaced by corporate competitors, proved durable, functioning through networks of linked specializations, with spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing often performed in separate establishments. Proprietary Capitalism documents the development of a fully realized alternative to the corporate style of mass production that brought fame to New England’s mill cities. This book presents a strong challenge for a rethinking of the role of ‘small business’ in the saga of American industrial development.

                Book Description

In today's highly competitive market, many destinations - from individual resorts to countries - are adopting branding techniques similar to those used by 'Coca Cola', 'Nike' and 'Sony' in an effort to differentiate their identities and to emphasize the uniqueness of their product.

By focusing on a range of global case studies, Destination Branding demonstrates that the adoption of a highly targeted, consumer research-based, multi-agency 'mood branding' initiative leads to success every time.

                * Includes five completely new chapters authored by brand consultants, destination marketers and academics, including Philip Kotler and Wally Olins.
                * A more global coverage with new case studies and examples from the US, New Zealand, Australia and Asia.
                * Considers the web as a channel of place branding/promotion and its effects on the industry

5 out of 5 stars The World of Destination Brands.......2007-10-21

After Destination Branding was first released it quickly became the branding bible for destination marketers and academics alike. Contributions by some of the world's leading destination branding experts such as Philip Kotler, Simon Anholt and Wally Olins have provided the second edition with some of the best in contemporary thinking on the subject. This edition introduced a number of new case studies that reflect the challenges of branding places in a variety of different market situations and lifecycle stages. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of Shanghai which is destined to be one of the great destination brands of the 21st century.

                Book Description

Corporate governance has become a major issue in business over the last decade. Adrian Cadbury has played a central role in developing policies, good practice, and our understanding of the complex issues involved. In 1992 he chaired the committee, sponsored by the Bank of England, whose Report on the Financial Aspects of Corporate Governance (commonly known as the 'Cadbury Report') put issues of corporate governance on the map. Ten years on, Cadbury now reflects on issues of corporate governance and chairmanship drawing on his own business and policy-making experience. In the book, he discusses and explains the central issuse of corporate governance; provides practical advice to chairmen and directors on their roles and responsibilities; and surveys the major codes of practice that have been developed in the last decade. He also considers the implications of the current review of company law and speculates on the implications of electronic developments for shareholders' voice and voting, the extent of a company's social responsibility, and the changing relationship between boards, managers, and investors. This book is both an informed commentary and a practical guide. Cadbury's insights will prove essential reading for anybody taking on senior roles in companies and other public organizations, and will provide well-grounded analysis for management academics, students, and advisers.

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative Guide to the Cahirman's Role.......2003-08-06

This could hardly be bettered as a guide for chairmen and board members on roles, relationships, key tasks and how to accomplish them. The author chaired the UK review, The Committee on the Financial Aspects of Corporate Governance and is a world authority in the field. He provides clear and well-organized coverage of the essential features of good governance and how boards can achieve it, without getting lost in legal/accounting technicalities.
He also provides some discussion of the issues of governance arising in a changing world (social responsibilities, environmental issues, responsibilities to stakeholders other than shareholders), but covers these rather more superficially.
He also includes some interesting reflections on the differences between US and UK Board structures - at a time when US practice is changing towards the separation of the Chairman and the CEO roles.

                          Book Description

The phenomenon of increased interconnectedness of the world's societies, generally referred to as `globalisation', is not only changing our everyday life, it also influences the legal framework we are living in. The challenges brought about by this process are especially great in fields of law which are by their very nature international such as Private International Law, the Law of Capital Markets, International Insolvency Law or the Law of the Internet: can, for example, established conflict-of-law rules survive in a globalised world? What options exist for regulating capital markets in the era of globalisation? Are national laws on international insolvencies prepared for the increasing number of cross-border insolvency proceedings or does the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency show the way? How can national or international legislators react to the new forms of torts and copyright infringements via the World Wide Web? These are some of the questions which eminent scholars from Japan and Germany try to answer in this volume. All essays are based on contributions to a symposium which took place in Fukuoka, Japan, on 28--29 March, 1999. The book will be a source of inspiration for everybody who deals with the legal aspects of the global changes which the world's leading economies face at the border to the new millennium.

                                      Book Description

Prescott Bush is the only person in U.S. history to be father of a U.S. President, grandfather of a U.S. President, and grandfather of a state governor. Duty, Honor, Country is more than a biography of the U.S. Senator from Connecticut, although it is that. It looks at the principles that Prescott Bush passed on like family heirlooms to his five children, including George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States: discipline, duty, ethics, commitment, courage, honor, honesty, loyalty, and responsibility. And it looks at the ways the Bush family legacy has made Prescott Bush, former President George Bush, George W. Bush, and Jeb Bush give themselves to public service. "My father believed in the concept of noblesse oblige," said former President George Bush. "You made your money and you had a duty to serve the community or your country."

Written with the encouragement and enthusiasm of former President Bush, the book is a readable story of noblesse oblige in action, from the time Prescott Bush served in town government in Greenwich, Connecticut, to his career as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut, to his role in passing far-reaching legislation in the Eisenhower years. It also deals honestly with Prescott Bush's alleged business relationships with Nazi industrialists and other accusations. Half of the book also shows how the commitment to public service was lived out in the lives of Prescott's children and grandchildren, focusing on his son George H.W. Bush and his grandsons George W. Bush and Jeb Bush.

"While there is a natural American enchantment with history as nostalgia," says the author, both Georges and Jeb resist - even detest - the words dynasty and legacy. 'Dynasty means something inherited,' said President George W. 'We inherited a good name, but you don't inherit a vote.'"

                                      3 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-07-18

This book reads very well. It took me two days to shoot through it casually. There are some mistakes, however, mostly dealing with dates of elections and positions held by officials at the time. As I have seen from others, the truth can be a little open to interpretation. But if you are above the politics and the petty bickering, this can be a very good read for someone who is interested in learning more about the origins of the Bush family.

5 out of 5 stars Why the people of the US elected G.W Bush --twice.......2005-05-21

This excellent book gives an insight into the values instilled by Prescott Bush, carried forth by President George H.W.Bush and now being practiced by President George W. Bush. These men and their families know what it means to practice honor, integrity, and duty to their country. The people of the US,who gave them the honor to serve, see the strength of duty and conviction in their actions, and this is what they see in President George W. Bush and don't fall for the picture portrayed by the elite left wing media and establishment. There is no doubt that the Bushes believe it is a great honor to serve their country and they will do everything possible to ensure that they will do it to the best of their ability.Leadership and Statesmanship is one thing while politics is another matter. The Bushes are able to handle both and do it without being mean-spirited or nasty;even in times when things don't always go the way they wish.To them, a public office is a sacred trust and they will do everything in their power to insure that the office gets the respect it deserves.Whether or not you agree with President Bush on all issues, one certainly knows where he stands .He has proven to be a man of his word, will give it his best and along the way will do nothing to disgrace the office he has been elected to hold.
There are a couple of thoughts the Bushes live by and everyone can benefit from them;regardless of their Faith or Politics:
"Doing what is right is what is more important than being
                                      popular."
"Principles matter a lot more than opinion polls."
Keeping this in mind one can see The President lives by his convictions;and this is the foundation of greatness. This applies just as much to the cop on the beat, the teacher in the school, the coach on the sand lot and The President of the United States of America. It is what George W.Bush believes, practices and will be his legacy.

Prescott Bush was a just a man, but he was a man who did a lot of very bad things. He administered finances for European shell corporations of the Third Reich before and during the war. His company was seized in 1942 under the trading with the enemy act. He helped Hitler. It's as simple as that.

This man profited from war and the death of other people's children.

Now his son, George HW Bush, is working for defense industry holding company, The Carlyle Group, who reports some of its highest profits ever. His Grandson has overseen the awarding of the largest no bid, no limit contracts in the history of the U.S. handed out to his Vice President's company (excuse me, Mr. Cheney still has options and receives "deferred retirement" checks from Halliburton every year). GW Bush's ratings were at their all time high when he declared war (for those of you who thought the Constitution gave that power to congress, they abdicated over a year ago)on Iraq, allowing him to push through another scurrilous tax cut for himself and his biggest contributors- once again profiting from the death of other people's children.

The seeds, in this case, have not fallen very far from the tree...

The United States government confiscation of Prescott Bush's and family assets in 1942 under the Trading With the Enemy Act for dealing with Nazi Germany and running Germany's I. G. Farben inyerests and others in the US should show just how disingenuous the title of this book is and the motives behind it. Public Relations at its finest.
                                      Not the Bush's finest hour.

As always, John Gould's dry-as-a-bone wit made me laugh out loud while reading. This memoir of his long friendship with his son's father-in-law deals with their shared annual vacation trips, through many years, into Maine's paper company owned north woods. The basic absurdity of a place where Maine residents rarely worked because they literally "couldn't get there from here" - it was easier for French Canadian workers to come in from Quebec, thanks to the lack of public roads - sets the tone for much of the book's humor. I found it a quick and easy read as well as a thoroughly delightful one.

3 out of 5 stars Visiting the the Maine woods with John Gould.......2000-02-10

Being one who visits the Golden Road almost yearly, I purchased the book with enthusiasm. My experience was mostly positive.

Gould demonstrates vast knowledge about the area. He describes: the realities of the Maine woods experience, personalities of the inhabitants, varieties of visitors, wildlife, history and industry.

One area of disappointment was Gould's frequent choice of vocabulary and references. While reading, a dictionary had to be at my side. Also, frequently used french, latin and some historical references made reading more difficult and not fun.

Mr. Gould did at times poke fun at his intellectual perspective. However, his choice of words does not seem suited for most.

All in all, the book is a positive experience. One can take a trip to Maine's Golden Road, from their favorite arm chair.

Using the fascinating analogy of the alchemist turning magic into gold, Bergeron and Blander - two Harvard & MIT professors - describe the process of turning an idea into a successful product. And that's just the first section!

As a partner in a professional services firm looking to diversity our labor-intensive services into technological applications, this book was right up my alley. Business Expectations helped me understand the process using real-world models and examples.
