    In the future a more competent workforce will be required as workers will have to acquire the competence to predict and deal with novel situations at work. This book aims to provide the reader with insightful perspectives about competence in different situations and contexts. It presents a more enlightened view of human competence by opening up an international dialogue about the meaning and interpretation of competence in the workplace, and the impact of learning environments on workplace policy and practice. Five major premises which provide a basis for how we interpret, experience, and teach competence in the workplace are put forward: notions of worker competence, and the persuasiveness of informal workplace training; developing competence as an individual, and the inherent relationship between the worker and work, and the lifeworld; learning which develops higher level competences based on a more holistic conception of competence; characteristics of learning environments as integral components of learning at work; learning environments construed as theoretical and methodological problems in terms of their impact on the acquisition of competence.

        If you have to deal with collegues in an international company, if you want to understand your customer or supplier, if you want to reduce unnecessary friction, you must understand how your counterparty interprets your behaviour. This book is a great help with its coordinate system of cultures.

        A very useful book if you need to GO GLOBAL. It give you the first hints about characteristics of foreign culture, even your own cultures. The structure and the very practically and lively examples make the book easy and sometimes funney to read. A strong buy for those who need or want to look outside of their own culture. Best book that I have seen so far in this area. No theories, pure reallity. I tested it live and it helped me in various situation to understand pitfalls that I hit or avoid pitfalls.

        "Richard Gesteland's "Cross-Cultural Business Behavior " has already reached classic status and is now in its fourth edition. Rather than being a theoretical compendium of cross-cultural theories this book is a practical guide for businesspeople in the "front lines of international trade".

        The first part of the book presents in a hundred odd pages the theoretical knowledge needed to appreciate and understand the case examples and the "how-to" sections. Some of the theoretical concepts such as monochronic and polychronic cultures are presented as givens without acknowledging links to the works of theorists. This might annoy some readers. But Gesteland approaches the understanding of the differences between national cultures from the perspective of a busy person who conducts business, with specific country-by-country advice.

        Busy international negotiators and businessmen as well as HR-practitioners, who are looking for "How-to" guidelines, which are not cumbersome, would appreciate this non-academic style and approach.

        In his book Cartin covers an amazing amount of ground, in depth and easily read. He provides a lot of graphs and figures, which I like for explaining concepts. Cartin is also a big fan of Control Charts and sigma, which is often given just equal treatment with the other tools in many other books, but as any practictioner knows, is the tool most often used for quality process control.

        There are some new elements added from the earlier version (TQM in title), but substantively this is the same book. Good thing, the original book was a classic. I still refer to my copy often. I read a friend's copy of this newer version and decided that the older one was still 99% relevant. However, if you don't own the earlier version, buy this one. It will provide value longer than that car you're driving.

        This book is a very good guide to the secondary issues of project management. The author goes into detail on topics such as managing complexity, extending projects to include operations and support, building teams with borrowed resources, resource estimation and a variety of other topics. The topics are valid, the writing is clear, but the writing style is very verbose. On the one hand, the topics are relevant only for project management professionals, but the writing style is for beginning project managers. This is a good book to read after to get your PMP certification.

        This second edition is a minor update to the original that was published in 1994. When the first edition was published business process reengineering was in vogue. Today we're still doing reengineering, but it goes by the moniker of "organizational change management". A rose by any other name; however, this book remains one of the only project management texts that stays focused on reengineering and organizational change projects while including traditional project planning, scheduling and control techniques.

        What makes this book unique is the way the author tackles organizational politics head on, and the sage advice given to deal with it. These comprise the main theme of Part I's first three chapters, which address the business environment, how to bring order out of chaos and engaging change. The final two chapters in Part I cover risk management and customer satisfaction - two main critical success factors for any project, but are especially important in organizational change projects.

        Part II starts with a chapter that is boldly titled "Acquiring Political Skills and Building Influence" and segues into another topic that most PM books sidestep: "Building Teams with Borrowed Resources". If you've ever attempted employing matrix management or virtual teams you'll appreciate the advice given in this chapter. The author also gives an excellent discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of self directed teams, which may be ideal in theory, but are not easy to achieve in practice. Chapter 8 in this part is a well written piece on project selection techniques, which reflects the author's approach that is better documented in a book that he coauthored titled "The Project Office".

        The remainder of the book is focused on traditional PM techniques, including estimating, outsourcing considerations, earned value (now part of the PMI PMBOK), and project metrics.

        If you are involved in organizational change projects this book is the best resource because of the way it combines organizational change management with traditional PM techniques.

                          Tim Smith has given sales people a practical guide to establishing lasting relationships and a loyal customer base. Mr. Smith has broken the sales process down into 7 steps, which when followed, result in a powerful relationship and long term success.
                          Mr. Smith's approach is logical and easy to follow. Examples of how this process works are plentiful and buttress his points very well.
                          I found the book readable and amusing. I will strongly suggest this book to my sales colleagues who are looking to improve their sales skills.

                          This book is outstanding! It takes a very simple approach to communicating the best way to maintain business with current customers and grow your business with both existing and new customers. Each one of us can implement the seven steps into our selling. Mr. Smith did a great job of giving us examples we can work with. I have already recommended this book to several colleagues!

Loyalty Based Selling is a quick read that avoids all the warm and fuzzes about selling and gets right into the meat of it. Tim offers a unique perspective and specific examples of whats's made him #1. The book walks you through how to introduce your self to a prospective customer to celebrating the close of a big deal. This book is a must read for all sales reps.

                            This book is more technological in nature than CRM strategy. It does give information regarding CRM as a business strategy; however, the core of the book is technology. If you are going to implement CRM at your organization, this book is a must read in conjunction with a book on CRM strategy. A lot of organizations try to implement CRM without having the infrastructure in place that will allow them to fully benefit from CRM. This book clearly defines how the systems infrastructure must be part of the CRM strategy and how they should be implemented together. It very thoroughly explains the use of data warehousing and systems design. The only downside to this book is the duplication of information. It could easily have been 100 pages shorter.

                            This is an excellent book that is very well written. It takes the complexity out of CRM and provides winning strategies to put an effective CRM program in place.

                            It provides a road map on how to design and build a world class CRM solution. And it recognizes that not all companies will build a large system up front, rather taking a step by step approach. Of particular interest was the section on implementing a CRM solution in 100 days. The approach and related disciplines is what matters most and it overviews these nicely.

                            The chapter that provides numerous examples of customer experiences is also very useful.

                            The author does an excellent job of pointing out that CRM is much more than customer acquisition and retention. He drives home the point that it is really about developing and managing a relationship.

                            5 out of 5 stars Accelerating Customer Relationships is what it's all about.......2002-02-22

                            This book is an indispensable read and reference for the business manager or technology manager that is teamed together. The author has brought together data and information from a very wide variety of sources - and added to it a substantial treasure trove of case studies. It is very real world. The sample project plan and methodology can be applied in many environments.
                            The case studies and biblography alone are well worth the acquisition price. The author also leaves many pointers to accessing more technical or in-depth materials throughout the book. Its use could save many firms (and teams) a lot of agony. It is truly about accelerating customer relationships - something every business person must be concerned with.

                            Ron's perspective on the subject obviously comes from substantial knowledge and experience in the industry. The research he has done around CRM technologies is very impressive and has depth that I have not seen in another books. I enjoyed his three dimension thinking to business. Worth the read!

                            If you just want to know what is CRM about, this book is too long (456 pages). And if you want to know how to put in practice these ideas, you won't get too much. Tons of words and little use of them to tell you about "How to do it?"
