    I found this book to be perfectly written for the demographic of my 1st-semester comp students. Many of these students are new to writing, unfamiliar with the English language, or downright afraid of writing in general. This book--with its conversational style and cultural examples--serves as an excellent tool to ease my students into the writing process.

    I would recommend this book to any instructor who has first year comp classes, ESL, or high school at-risk students who need a friendlier intro to the art of writing.

    Technically speaking, the book was alright. From the title, I anticipated a user's manual for the dedicated novice writer. To tap into thoughts and feelings. What I got was a contrived pseudo-passionate message which was a bit to condescending for my taste.

                          Originally published in 1959, Robert Bruce's "1877: Year of Violence" is a classic of sorts. Personally, I was drawn to this book because of its focus on that watershed year. Most undergraduate courses use 1877 as the explicit demarcation point between early and modern American history. Yet, I never quite understood why a plurality of professional historians had concluded that 1877 was the decisive inflection point in the history of our nation and hoped this book would shed some light on that issue.

                          In the main, this book deals with the rise of big business (railroads, in particular) and the subsequent emergence of unionism and ultimately labor violence. That larger story is told through the specific events of the summer of 1877, when railroad workers reacted widely and violently - although not concertedly - to a wave of pay reductions by the major eastern trunk lines. In essence, the railroad executives had formed a quasi "union of capital," whereby each major trunk line agreed to lower wages by 15% one at a time throughout the summer and not to issue any rate wars in the interim while roads were putting down the inevitable strikes and walk-outs.

                          The most shocking aspect of Bruce's narrative is the level of violence committed on both sides and the extremely precarious state of the nation at that time, both economically and politically. President Rutherford B. Hayes had come to office at the beginning of the year in a widely disputed election where he had secured a one electoral point victory over his Democratic challenger, New York Governor Samuel Tilden, but lost the popular vote and was ultimately declared the winner by an extra-governmental committee (sound familiar?). Moreover, the nation was just beginning to recover from the Panic of 1873, the worst economic contraction in American history to the time, while the South still smoldered from Civil War and was on the verge of all-out racial warfare as Reconstructionist policies were imposed from Washington. In short, the crisis facing the country was severe and it is a testament to the remarkable resilience of our republic that it survived such a widespread spasm of violence so shortly after a civil war, in the midst of extreme economic hardship, and under the leadership of a new, disputed and largely uninspiring chief executive.

                          Bruce's writing style is crisp and direct, as one might expect to find in a book written by an academic in the 1950s. He avoids the showy dramatization common in contemporary popular history, but also steers clear of the dry, didactic prose of "more professional" histories. Those seeking a light, inspiring book to breeze through will likely be disappointed; however, those interested in getting a better understanding of a crucial, yet mostly forgotten epoch of American history will be satisfied and rewarded.

                                            This book is a quick and easy guide to cutting food costs in the restaurant business. More than anything else it makes you think of ideas to make your own business more profitable. This is a book that you will want to assign to your entire kitchen staff.

                                                The NRAEF is introducing a new program as part of its strategic focus on recruitment and retention. This new management training certification program is based on a set of competencies defined by the restaurant, foodservice and hospitality industry as those needed for success. NRAEF ManageFirst Program leads to a new credential, ManageFirst Professional (MFP), which is part of our industry career ladder. This competency-based program includes 12 topics, each with a competency guide, exam, instructor resources and certificate. Students earn a certificate for each exam passed. The topics and exams are aligned to typical on-campus courses. For example, the Controlling Foodservice Costs Competency Guide is designed to align with a Cost Control or Operations Management course. Competency Guides and Textbooks: Most guides are 150-200 pages in length and are designed to be used with traditional textbooks for each course area. Each guide contains the essential content for that topic, learning activities, assessments, case studies, suggested field trips & research projects, professional profiles and testimonials. Instructor resources are available electronically and include competency guide content, notes indicating points to be emphasized, recommended activities and discussion questions, and answers to all activities and case studies. Exams: Exams accompany each topic covered in the competency guides. Pencil and paper and online exam formats are offered. They typically are proctored on campus at the end of a course by faculty. Certificates: The NRAEF provides a certificate to students upon successfully passing each exam. The certificates are endorsed by the NRAEF and feature the student’s name and the exam passed. The certificates are a lasting recognition of a student’s accomplishment and a signal to the industry that the student has mastered the competencies covered within a particular topic. Credential: Upon successful completion of five NRAEF ManageFirst Program exams (including three predefined core topics, one foundation topic, and ServSafe Food Safety) a student is awarded the NRAEF ManageFirst Professional (MFP) credential. There is no additional charge for the credential. The program is targeted at the academic community. The program is flexible for use at two-year or four-year restaurant, foodservice and hospitality programs, proprietary schools and technical/vocational career education schools.

                                                          "This book has centered on the concept and process of discovering and maintaining fit-strategic fit between the organization and its environment and internal fit among strategy, structure, and management processes. Fit, we have argued, is not merely important; it is crucial. With fit comes fame, with misfit comes failure...We have shown that fit is a simple concept but not a simple process. To achieve strategic fit, organizations must create, understand, develop, and sustain a distinctive competence that adds high value to goods or services the market desires...The obvious lesson here is the same one we have been emphasizing throughout this book. In the competitive world of today and tomorrow, competencies must be investment-based. They must rest on the sustained investment of money and time, which build ever-increasing skills and know-how as well as the capability to use them to their fullest (pp. 186-199)."

                                                              I have not worked completely through this book, but have found it to be very readible with sound information. Everything does not apply to my situation (very small organization), but the concepts are clear.

                                                              This book, like all of Ms. Cassidy's work, is straightforward, to the point and reads like a blueprint for success. In particular, she frames the objectives (Where are we? Where do we need to be? What's the best way to get there?), then gives guidance on answering the questions and a realistic and actionable plan for meeting the objectives.

                                                              Her approach is focused on business needs and linked to the overriding imperatives and strategies of that domain. She begins by discussing the business drivers and why strategic planning is necessary, then provides a phased approach to the strategic planning process itself. This approach captures the business and technical "as-is" and "to-be" pictures, performs a gap analysis, and a plan for going from "as-is" to "to-be". On the surface this appears to be common sense, but the devil is in the details, and she provides the details. That is what makes this book so valuable. More importantly, it's obvious that she has extensive experience in strategic planning because all of the subtle issues are addressed, and her advice is on the mark every step of the way.

                                                              Of course, one of the big issues in strategic planning is the question of what capital investments to make in software, either as an upgrade or entire replacement of company-critical systems, that align to the slected strategy. This book shows how to select the best fit to meet strategic plans, and how to capture the true costs and support requirements as a matter of due diligence.

                                                              This book is, in my opinion, one of the better ones on the topic, and is only exceeded by her most recent book titled "A Practical Guide to Planning for E-Business Success: How to E-enable Your Enterprise". That book contains substantially the same approach as this one, but is aligned to e-business. Regardless of which book you choose, you'll find Ms. Cassidy's approach to reflect best practices, and the advice interspersed throughout the book to be invaluable.

                                                              Half of the book deals with strategic planning which is quite helpful. Half the book deals with how to acquire an application which is not.

                                                              I work for a large East Coast Utilities company. Our project team was charged with producing an "Information Systems Strategic Plan". A daunting task given multiple platforms, architectures, and technologies. Our team was experienced and knowledgeable, but lacked process direction.

                                                              We turned to Anita Cassidy's book and found it amazingly helpful. We found ourselves referring to it many times during the planning and implementation stages of the project.

                                                              Her book provides an authoritative reference which allowed us to cut total project time by 25%. We didn't need to argue about process, methodology, or research strategy. We went with Cassidy's suggestions and we were more than pleased with the results.

                                                              Cassidy's simple, straightforward approach is easy to follow, meaningful, and very applicable. If you have the task of assembling an IS Strategic Plan, then this book will give you the step-by-step methodology to do so.

                                                              My graduate IS/IT Strategic Planning course did not assign a text book on writing up an IS/IT Strategic Plan, so I had to track one down on my own. After reviewing at least a dozen books, I found Cassidy's to be the most practical with multiple and varied examples of the critical ideas, sections & components found within an IS Strategic Plan. There are many great examples of Mission and Vission statements and detailed sections on ROI analysis, executive summaries and the entire planning process, etc. The graphics & exhibits are easily understood and well organized, as is the entire book. In fact, other students actually purchased this book during the semester at my recommendation and our professor is looking to add this book as required reading for the course! It is especially good for those who have little to no experience putting together an entire IS plan from ground zero. Thorough, to the point, terrific examples and extremely well organized is how I would sum up this book. It will serve both students and IS/IT professionals extremely well.
