4 out of 5 stars One of The Best..........2003-07-05

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of Keep What You Own, by Adam Starchild (or whatever his real name is).

Although the publishers of this book (Paladin Press) are perhaps best known for their more radical, esoteric titles, Keep What You Own is actually a fairly conservative book when it comes to asset protection advice. It shows you the pros as well as the cons of most methods it covers, which the majority of books on this subject completely fail to do.

From Nevada Corporations to Offshore Trusts, most of the well-known methods of asset protection are covered in this book, and usually in fairly good depth. Despite having already read several books on asset protection in the past, Starchild actually brings up some extremely good points that many other books fail to mention. Some of his insights on Nevada Corporations were especially eye opening.

Although not an attorney, Starchild has obviously done his homework. There are a few asset protection methods you can tell that he is obviously biased towards (Swiss Annuties for example), but for the most part he provides a very unbiased look at each method of asset protection, and clearly explains why (or why not) it might be the right vehicle for you.

On the downside, the book is obviously in need of an update (it was originally published in 1995), although the vast majority of the methods he describes have changed little since the original publication. Also, he seems to pepper the book with references to companies that you have the distinct impression he is financially linked to. Unfortunately, writing under an assumed pen name does not add to his credibility.

On the whole though, Keep What You Own is one of the better asset protection books I have read. It would be great to see an updated version of this title, but 95% of it is still applicable to today's laws. Before you buy in to any of the more questionable asset protection schemes that you see advertised, you would do well to get a copy of this book. It reveals the good, the bad, and the ugly, when it comes to asset protection strategies.

5 out of 5 stars The book just gets more relevant with each passing year.......2001-08-22

The fundamentals haven't changed, and news events just make this book more relevant each year. Until the insane lawsuit trend stops, it is ordinary honest people who are at risk of losing their assets. Starchild's book addresses a number of safe, conservative techniques to gain some degree of protection - protection that is not always available through insurance

5 out of 5 stars One of the best experts on offshore topics........2001-02-11

An offshore haven is simply a country other than your own. To an American, it's anywhere you bank outside of the U.S. Why invest in offshore havens? Because when you invest outside your own country, you are no longer tied to its restrictive financial laws, and can protect your assets, save taxes and build your wealth easier.

Most of us have been hoodwinked into thinking that offshore havens are illegal, too risky, or otherwise unworthy of consideration. Don't believe it. Financial expert Adam Starchild will dispel myths and misconceptions about offshore banking and reveal how you can:

Achieve total secrecy and and financial privacy
Transfer your money offshore, and keep it safe from lawsuits, creditors, the IRS, etc.
Use offshore havens to legally avoid, defer or minimize taxes
Invest globally and build your wealth
Pick the offshore haven that best meets your objectives
Choose the right offshore bank and maintain an account -- easily and safely
Do business offshore -- and reap extraordinary benefits
And more!

5 out of 5 stars The Reasons for Asset Protection.......2000-10-30

Many people who elect to become structured offshore do so because they feel persecuted by government, claim-minded litigants, and even investigative journalists. Often it is less an election than a matter of simple survival. In spite of assurances of fair trials and opportunities to be heard, assets are at risk if they remain in your home country or if you remain within the range of the agencies or individuals that would attack you. The natural law of envy provides that the greater your success, the greater the likelihood that you will become a target for several character types, each with a different agenda but all proximately motivated by the natural law. That is, the means and immediate goals of attackers may take different forms but at root, each is driven by the natural law of envy.

Unfortunately, it is impossible for anyone, including us, to live in this world without confronting such ugliness in some form or another. Cloaked in a thousand forms of self-righteous crusading and victim restitution, all efforts share a common goal of taking away your assets. For example, armies of IRS bureaucrats, working 40 hours a week in positions with little hope of advancement, are paid to audit you and simply cannot help but enjoy the prospect of acquainting you with financial adversity. They may not personally realize economic benefit from their work, but their gratification derives from knowing that at least you will not enjoy your former wealth.

5 out of 5 stars The Worldwide Assault on Wealth.......1998-11-02

Today your wealth and ability to do with it as you please are in great danger. Not only is there a proliferation of thieves and parasites armed with sophisticated electronic weapons that can steal our money, but the government itself -- the very institution we should rely on to guard our rights -- is after our wealth more persistently and maliciously than any thief in the world.

All over the world, governments are becoming more and more predatory. They reach for more and more power, and they squeeze more and more money out of their citizens... by any means they can. There is almost nowhere on earth your money is safe anymore.

Powers to confiscate money, under the guise of "drug laws," are growing in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and many other countries around the world.

Historically, appropriation of wealth has taken many forms -- and it's gone on for centuries. For instance, in East Germany alone, 9,870 industrial and commercial enterprises and about one-third of the entire land area capable of agricultural or forestry use were confiscated between 1945 and 1949. The same thing has gone on throughout South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Do you do business in the U.S.? You should know that new banking regulations make it a federal crime not to report certain transactions -- of as little as $3,000. There is no requirement that the money be involved in any criminal activity -- it is a crime to simply not report the transaction. The penalty? Liability for a five-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. And -- the law allows the federal government to confiscate any funds they allege to be involved. Plus, bank tellers can collect huge rewards -- up to $150,000 -- for turning you in, if you are subsequently convicted of a criminal act, and subject to a civil fine or forfeiture of money or property.

Governments all over the world are trying to figure out how to crack down on the Internet and on-line communications. They're deathly afraid they'll lose their ability to tax, seize, and control their citizens' money.

The recent Bre-X scandal is a perfect example of how you can be cleverly robbed from anywhere in the world. Bre-X was one of the hot mining companies listed in Canada, but the investors who were fleeced were from all over the world. In a nutshell, fake drilling reports ran the stock of Bre-X from pennies all the way to $22.50, after a 10-1 split. When it turned out the reports were fake, some $4 billion in wealth disappeared almost overnight as the stock plunged.

As you can see, these threats are global. Governments don't protect you -- they're just part of the problem. And other threats cross borders and continents in the blink of an eye.

It doesn't matter whether you're wealthy or average, an individual or a company, or where you are in the world -- the assaults on wealth, from government and crooks, is growing, and you are at risk.

Adam Starchild believes that your wealth should be secure -- safe from the government and safe from thieves. In Keep What You Own he shows you some specific strategies to protect your wealth.

It's important to realize that people read posts and value the rating system on these books. I'm giving this book 5 stars because it tells the history that you can't learn in public school. Just because you have a social chip on your shoulder with an author is NO EXCUSE to ruin their chances of getting a 'loud and clear' message to those who are trying to educate themselves.

The 1 star rating three times should be deleted. It's rude, unprofessional, childish and as far as I'm concerned racist. Furthermore I feel it's part of the problem with getting the truth out about OUR history.

My opinion, Read It for the Historical Content not for the author! :)

I read his posts on Black Planet and Mi Gente everyday. He is a self serving person who is allways promoting his books. He constantly posts pseudo-history, but then fails to back it up under challenge. He refers to whites as crackers and claims native americans don't have claims in the Americas because Blacks have prior claims. For this reason I allready know this book will be an extreme case of Afrocentrism, and of no historical educational value. Sadly, he might be mentioning some truths, but he mixes it so much with fantasy, that the truth becomes suspect too.

                    Book Description

This first book to make a detailed exploration of the system of riverboat traffic of the Delta region, Steamboats and the Cotton Economy is also the first balanced study showing how steamboats in the early years of the republic performed essentially the same role that railroads would later perform in revolutionizing the interior of the nation. Today, the mention of steamboats conjures up romantic visions of cotton landings and mythological river traders. Some of the steamboats plying the Mississippi-Yazoo Delta waterways give form to the myth. Others call forth the true work-a-day world of steamers loaded with passengers, freight, and sacks of cotton seed. Such ubiquitous trade boats, cotton, gin boats, sawmills boats, as well as ice and mail boats, not only helped to build the Cotton Kingdom but also added rich texture and color to the history of the Delta. In discovering the role of steamboats in the everyday life of the Mississippi Delta, this book reveals the vital economic function of river transportation in the development of the region. With this as a major theme, Harry P. Owens shows how entrepreneurs developed and maintained this transportation system. He focuses on the biography of one of these businessmen, Sherman H. Parisot, and gives a case study of his steamboat company, the P. Line.

This history of the steamboat era in the region covers a century, from the 1820s when itinerate steamers of the Mississippi River mosquito fleet rushed into the Delta for cargoes and passengers, until 1920 when Mississippi River towboats and their barges entered the Delta waterways. Between these decades, young men who came of age along the Yazoo River gained control of their waterways in the late antebellum period and tried to hold them for the Confederacy during the war years. Re-establishing their control in the postbellum Cotton Kingdom, Captain Parisot and his associates fought a futile battle against the business giants of New Orleans. During the final days of the era, when they were confined to the Delta waterways, Yazoo steamboatmen faced the new challenge of the railroads. By 1900, the locomotive supplanted the steamboat for most interregional shipping, but steamers continued to transport large quantities of freight and thousands of passengers each year. After more than a century, steamboats, which had played such a vital role in the building of the Mississippi-Yazoo Delta, yielded to the internal combustion engine and the era ended.

I found this book to be really helpful - what to put, and what NOT to put, in an advertising portfolio; creative and unusual résumé concepts; and all of the insights delivered in a very realistic manner. What is very off-putting is the interior book design. The entire book is set in a HUMONGOUS point size that just screams at you from every page, plus the amateurish illustrations are cheezy. If you can get beyond the aesthetic oddity of the book interior, the information within is quite useful for aspiring art directors. Equally helpful for students just starting out, or for those endeavoring to make a career change.

I didn't know Ms. Paetro was an advertising pro until I looked her up with the intention of doing a recommendation GUIDE for her fiction books. In case you don't know, she's the co-author of two of James Patterson's best books, 4th of July and The Fifth Horseman. (I'm happy to hear she's co-authoring his next release, also ... which pleases me since I'm her biggest fan and think she enhances his writing.) Now don't get me wrong, Patterson is awesome and stands alone without any help, but there's something that clicks for me when Paetro gets into the mix.

But getting back to this "how-to" book, it's a real help to anyone desiring a career in advertising. It's interesting to hear the anecdotes Ms. Paetro tells from her own experience and to learn from a real "pro" who excels in so many areas of writing.

                    Informative! Inspiring! Thanks Ms. Paetro!

I am a fiction writer who also wants to write ad copy. I got this book on the recommendation of a professional copywriter and have been glad I did ever since. The book offers sage advice, a comforting hand, and many amusing anecdotes from both Ms. Paetro (herself an advertising professional) and several of the industry's stars.

It has informed and inspired me. It has answered questions that troubled me and others I didn't even know I had. It even includes an address to contact Ms. Paetro at for advice-something I've done a couple times.

If you want to get into advertising, I highly recommend this book.

There are now a number of good books on getting a job in the advertising business.
This is the classic - it contains the core good advice you need to get started on your portfolio (aka you "book," sample book, mini-book, etc.) for a job in the "creative" department of an advertising agency - or some other type of marketing communications firm (i.e. web site, in-house department, sales promo, event marketing, branding company, etc.).
In addition to the you-absolutely-have-to-know-this-period-no-further-discussion information inside this book, there are "good advice" essays from some of the absolute top people in the ad profession.
These days, you probably need more than one good book to help you get your book together - and maybe some time at a portfolio or design school (we talk about them, too), but this is the one to get you started.

Your friends at The Copy Workshop

PS. Even though it's listed, you probably won't find this book at your library - people tend to steal it. Bad!!
(But you know better than that, don't you?) Better buy your own copy.

PPS. This book was the first. There are now a number of other books on getting a job in advertising, and most of them are pretty good, too. But a lot of them assume you've read this one.

4 out of 5 stars Sound Advice and Highly Recommended by the Pros.......2004-01-10

This is an update of an earlier edition. I've never read the previous edition, but having seen its cover, I wish they had kept the same cover. But I guess that's a fairly minor complaint in the grand scheme of things.

To its credit, the "Book" goes beyond just advising on how to put a book (a.k.a. a portfolio to people outside advertising) together. It also offers advice on the job search and interviewing, among other things. A little over a third of the Book is Ms. Paetro's advice. The remaining two thirds consists of advice from numerous advertising veterans, some of them very recognizable names in the industry.

The Book itself is kind of an oddity in design. It's somewhat oversized, roughly 8" by 11 ½," and is designed to look like a portfolio. Clever, but I prefer the earlier edition's cover. Most of the type inside is oversized also (14 point?), making it a relatively fast, easy read. The advice appears sound and useful, although the advertising industry is notoriously tough to break into even under the best of circumstances. But my guess is anyone using the advice in this book will have a leg up on others.

Whether you are a college student soon to be pounding the street in search of work, or a pro seeking to make a lateral or upward move, there is good advice in here for you. And given some of the names recommending it, it may actually prove to be great advice.

3 out of 5 stars Not everything in this book is true..........2001-11-10

I bought this book in the mid-80s when I was a fledgling copywriter in New York City.

It was helpful in focusing on what was important in putting my book together. But not everything in this book is a hard-and-fast fact. For example, in the author's opinion, it is okay to simply have stick figures for your visuals. But every ad person I talked with said this thinking was completely wrong. The truth is, you need to have as professional-looking a book as possible, which means you need to hire, at the very least, a professional art director to draw your visual for you. Better yet, get some photos for your ad if that is what is meant to be there.

Competition for jobs is just so fierce, you need to do whatever you can to package yourself ahead of the next guy. Great ideas are not enough anymore; they need to look great, too.

In the end, I was always given the "great book, no jobs" refrain. After three years of pounding the streets of NYC, I never got a job. There was even an ringing endorsement from a New York creative director on the back cover which read "I will give anyone who follows this book's advice an automatic interview!" I never even got a return phone call from the guy.

I would recommend this book to a beginner, but with the caveat that the ideas inside are just one person's opinion, and should not be considered gospel.

A few years ago, as a college student, I had the opportunity of hearing a speaker who got his start as a copywriter at Ogilvy & Mather. While speaking, and in private group sessions, he disclosed that before going into advertising, he had just gotten his degree in Political Science, a subject totally unrelated to the fast-paced, crazy-creative, lucrative world of advertising. He bought this book, followed it to a T, built his portfolio, and was able to bluff his way into his first job in NYC. He impressed me so much, that I've been looking for this book ever since. I'm so glad that I was able to find it, (still in print, thank goodness) and am anxiously waiting for its delivery. As of December 2000, I have my degree in advertising, but I wasn't prepared for the angst of breaking into the business, and I was given so little guidance in preparing a 'book'. I think this book is really going to help.
