Disclaimer: Dick Duke was one of my mentors in graduate school, and it is a shame when professors like him retire, because they can not be replaced.

I obtained the mentioned book from University library. It is in DOS format. It did not work in my XP notebook. I wrote many times to author. He is indiffirent. I could not run the program still. I did not have this chance!! But it looks it is for year 1995 not for 2003!

Not Today's World.......2002-03-20

The Business Policy Game is copyrighted 1995 and contains a computer disk for the simulated game that is still in DOS. It is totally out of date. It teaches students to run a company in a business world that no longer exists. It offers no opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship or e-commerce. This game may have been useful for students in 1995 but it is no longer a simulation of the world that faces us in 2002.

The Business Policy Game (BPG) is a simulation of a business that takes place on a virtual world where only two countries exist, and you run a company that has competitors. You are the CEO and the CFO of this company. You take decisions about marketing, production, finances to make your company the best of the world.

This book is the BPG Manual, and contains the description of the world that the simulation develops. It is clearly written, and contains a detailed description of the process you have to follow to take decision on the Business Policy Game.

I think this provides valuable experience on running a real company.

Description:
This article describes the competitive strategies of the subsystems in the Brazilian electricity sector. The objective is to present a model in which the operation of each subsystem is managed independently. As the subsystems correspond to the country's geographic regions, the adoption of this model creates conditions for each region to develop according to its own peculiarities. The decision-making process is described based Game Theory. As such, the players or operators of each subsystem carry out their strategies based on the quantities produced, which results in Nash-Cournot equilibrium. In this model, the importance of the proper transmission line dimensioning is highlighted. It determines the competition level among subsystems and allows for optimization of the whole system without requiring arrangements for managing the congestion of the energy transportation grid. The model was programmed in FORTRAN, using IBM's optimization subroutine library (OSL) package.

This book explores the characteristics of inflations, comparing historical cases from Roman times up to the modern day. High and moderate inflations caused by the inflationary bias of political systems and economic relationships - and the importance of different monetary regimes in containing them - are analyzed.

Peter Bernholz demonstrates that certain macroeconomic traits have been stable characteristics of inflations over the centuries, and illustrates their causes; the development of real stock of money, real exchange rate, real budget deficit and of currency substitution. He goes on to explain that metallic monetary regimes allow substantial inflations by debasement - 4th century Roman Empire experiencing the highest of them - but are dwarfed by the experience of hyperinflations. These occurred only under discretionary paper money regimes. To demonstrate this and their characteristics, all twenty-nine hyperinflations are studied. In contrast to the existing literature, the book also examines political conditions that allow a return to stable monetary regimes, given the inflationary tendencies of political systems. Finally, economic measures and institutional reforms to end high and moderate inflations are discussed.

Disaster insurance rate determination (guessing or otherwise).......2005-08-11

An excellent survey of disaster insurance premium estimation. The volume is written by a variety of contributors, but they follow an outline predetermined by the editors. The material starts with an introduction to natural disasters (hurricanes and earthquakes), then reviews the primary 'technique' recommended by the authors: using GIS databases and sophisticated computer models to predict disaster costs (disaster models). Unfortunately, the details of running these models are hard to communicate without giving the reader access to an interface of a sample model.

Despite this difficulty, there is an excellent chapter detailing the legal battles between the insurance industry and consumer advocates. The battle was fought after the Northridge, CA earthquake, and the GIS data and disaster models were the heavy artillery employed by the insurance brokers. The authors review difficult issues regarding 'fair premium price' determination for regulated retail insurance policies. The purchasers of disaster insurance tend to see the brokers collecting risk-free profits. The brokers counter that the Northridge earthquake insurance payouts exceed all the premiums paid in California for over 20 years. Elsewhere the authors mention hurricane Andrew insurance payouts exceeded all insurance payments ever collected in Florida.

The final chapter covers 'terrorism insurance', and represents an excellent survey of issues facing the insurance industry after September 11. One of the interesting issues raised in the mismatch between industry assessment of 'fair premium' and public assumptions that a 9/11 type disaster could not happen, again. At least this is what sale of terrorism insurance demonstrates.

The book will probably suggest more questions than it answers. In particular, the chapter on terrorism raises interesting issues about 'governmental' coverage versus 'private' coverage. At a certain level, victims of terrorism can expect taxpayers to 'aid' those suffering from the disaster. 'Aid' is another term for insurance, but 'coverage' is universal and payments hidden in various taxes. Coming up with fair 'retail terrorism insurance premiums' seems beyond the capabilities of the US insurance system. The problems are structural and won't go away any time soon.

This book covers so many great topics that it is impossible to go into all of them in an amazon review. Suffice to say, for anyone in the reinsurance business, or anyone interested in risk management in general, this is simply a terrific book. The subject matter is dense, but the writing is lucid and engaging. Nicely done!
