If you are a first time teacher, maybe this book would be helpful, but I have taught 15+ years, and I really didn't learn anything new. I was hoping it would give strategies to help with ADHD students in the classroom, but not so much. It did give lots of research, which I wasn't really looking for.

        Book Description

David A. Garvin rocked the foundations of U.S. manufacturing when his devastating indictment of American product quality first appeared in the Harvard Business Review in 1983 and subsequently in newspapers around the world. Garvin had analyzed a representative global industry -- room air conditioners, a product with basic, unchanging technological requirements -- and irrefutably documented American failure rates which were 500 to 1,000 times greater than those of Japanese competitors. Now, building on that shocking study, Garvin's new work combines theory and practice to show how a more sophisticated understanding of quality can lead U.S. companies to a strategic approach to quality management, which is necessary to compete in today's world marketplace.

This seminal work is essential reading for managers, particularly since widely held assumptions and a growing mythology about quality have not produced the expected revolution in U.S. quality performance -- with few products able to match the quality and reliability levels of their overseas competitors. Garvin begins with a superb review of quality history in this country and an incisive analysis of what Japan has done with the same concepts and ideas -- and done demonstratively better -- revealing the hard facts that prove quality is the best competitive weapon to dramatically increase profits and cut losses.

Here is the actual evidence relating quality to such variables as price, market share, advertising, cost, productivity, and profitability as hammered out by Garvin in a point-by-point comparison of quality management in U.S. and Japanese plants. His focused study of seven Japanese companies and eleven U.S. factories makes extraordinarily clear what the Japanese have done to better even the best U.S. companies. He looks to the underlying sources of superior quality and identifies both the practices long associated with excellence, such as reliability engineering and precise information systems, and those that have rarely appeared in the literature, such as limited bumping, order of assembly operations, and narrow product lines. Finally, he demonstrates with unmistakable bottom-line figures the all-important need for top managers to become involved in quality activities.

Garvin's credo throughout is, "If quality is to be managed, it must first be understood." In this landmark work, he provides that comprehensive and lucid understanding of quality in a way that can readily be transferred to a wide variety of industry environments. The result is a damning, yet enlightening analysis that specifically illustrates how America must improve product quality to win back lost markets and gain long-term competitive advantage.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Brilliant, Practical, Useful.......1999-02-14

I was surprised to find that no one had written a review for this book. I came across it while writing my thesis for MBA on the subject of quality. This book is an extension of his McKinsey award winner article in HBR. Garvin expounds that there are 8 dimensions of quality, such as reliability, aesthetics, durability, etc. He begins by explaining different definitions and perceptions of quality; for example, engineering has a different definition than marketing, which in turn has a different interpretation than manufacturing. Through case study comparison of Japanese and American companies he demonstrates how quality management impacts the end product and profitability. Although, it is less engineering/statistical than the works of Juran and other quality gurus, Managing Quality is probably the most comprehensive book on quality; ideal for a manager/executive. Garvin's research is exhaustive; his writing style lucid.

Note this book was written nearly 10 years ago now and it's discussion of business process and technology is woefully out of date.

Most of the companies praised here for their "leading edge" processes have fallen off their pedestals for horrendous breakdowns in supply chain management -- see Xerox's SEC punished manipulations and Compaq's [bum] kicking by Dell.

This book was probably interesting in 1993 but is no longer.

          Book Description

Can managers learn from fads? That is the question Robert Cole addresses in this insightful book about the various factors supporting and inhibiting organizational learning. A longtime student of the Japanese and American quality movements, Cole focuses on the response of American industry to the challenge posed in the early 1980s by high quality goods from Japan. While most American managers view this challenge as slowly but successfully met, many academics see the quality movement that emerged from it as just another fad. In seeking to reconcile these two views, Cole explores the reasons behind American industry's slow response to Japanese quality, arguing that a variety of institutional factors inhibited management action in the early 1980s. He then describes the reshaping of institutions that allowed American companies to close the quality gap and to achieve sustained quality improvements in the 1990s. Hewlett-Packard serves as an example of a company that made this institutional transition more effectively than most. Cole describes Hewlett-Packard's successful strategies while also pointing out the serious problems that it and other companies face as they attempt to adapt, improve, and go beyond Japanese practices. He also uses Hewlett-Packard, an exemplar of the highly decentralized company, to explore effective strategies for the creation, dissemination, and implementation of knowledge. Unprecedented as a scholarly treatment of the quality movement,Managing Quality Fads provides several important lessons for those interested in management decision making under conditions of uncertainty and organizational transformation in a rapidly changing business environment.

          Book Description

Quality guru Dr. Joseph M. Juran has compiled an international history of managing for quality--a landmark volume of enormous importance and unquestioned authority. Each chapter describes the management of quality during a specific span of time and in a specific area of the world through the ages. A richly diverse group of authors, each one a renowned authority on the international history of quality, was chosen to produce this expansive work that focuses on the broad perspectives of quality, rather than on specific methods or industries. Dr. Juran, drawing on a lifetime of experience and research, offers his thoughts on the history of managing for quality in the U.S., and gives a remarkable summary tracing worldwide trends and the likely directions for quality into the next century.

This book is a must read for those who wish to learn about quality and talks about the entire history of the quality movement and the japanese revolution, and what would be the future of the science of quality management. I found this book a easy read than most others that I've read on quality management. Another positive aspect of this book is that the author is very precise to the point and at the same time covers almost every aspect of this science.

              Book Description

The management of production is faced with ever greater challenges as global competion mounts. The problems revolve around the paradox of flexibility and productivity in the organization of production: how to compete on price while retaining the capability to respond quickly to market changes; how to develop new products faster without jeopardizing product integrity; how to increase quality while reducing costs. The recent research on lean production has explored some of these questions in the context of the motor industry. This book takes a broader audit of these issues across the full range of the metalworking sector in the United Kingdom. Focusing on the engineering/manufacturing interface, the research presented here explores how 15 leading British firms are facing up to the challenges of the 90s.

                      Book Description

This history focuses on the credit generating function of American banks. It demonstrates that banks aggressively promoted economic development rather than passively following its course. Using previously unexploited data, Professor Bodenhorn shows that banks helped to advance the development of industrialization. Additionally, he shows that banks formed long-distance relationships that promoted geographic capital mobility, thereby assuring that short-term capital was directed in socially desirable directions. He then traces those institutional and legal developments that allowed for this capital mobility.

                              Book Description

The story of the American fur trade has been told many times from different viewpoints, but David Lavender was the first to place it within the overall contest for empire between Britain and the United States. Rather than offering a simple hagiography of men like Jedediah Smith, Kit Carson, Jim Bridger and other legendary trappers, Lavender relates the story of men such as John Jacob Astor and Ramsay Crooks who competed with Britain’s Hudson’s Bay Company for the fur resources of the Great Lakes region and the upper Missouri River country.
Within this framework of contest and competition, Lavender shows how the American Fur Company learned to exploit the needs and wants of Indian tribes to gain a superior economic position over the British. The brutal and bloody rivalry helped Ramsay Crooks develop the techniques for transporting furs, supplying trappers, and selling pelts that made fur trapping such an integral economic activity in early U.S. history.

                              4 out of 5 stars challenging .......2005-05-28

I would argue with the previous reviewer and call this book "challenging" rather than monotonous; of course it depends on the level of your interest in the subject...for me, it approaches the passionate...the author uses what might be called the "immersion" method of historical writing which can indeed be exhausting; this is not a book to be read in huge swatches; rather,a few pages at a time must be digested thoroughly...it requires a commitment of time and concentration, and should be read steadily from start to finish...you wouldn't want to put it down for weeks and then try to pick it up again. This book rewards effort; the reader will leave it with a vast knowledge of this arcane subject and most likely, a feeling of gratitude for a huge lesson in North American geography. It's amazing to find out how little you know about the latter subject until you start reading a book like this....also recommended, the author's ONE MAN'S WEST, a lively and fascinating chronicle of early mining and ranching adventures.

                              3 out of 5 stars Long-winded, exhausting and monotonous.......2002-02-05

The amount of research which went into this book must have been phenomenal but the writing style is so complex and confusing, it can be difficult to follow. This is the political and economical side of the fur trade business during the early 1800's from the point of view of John Jacob Astor and Ramsay Crooks of the American Fur Company. There is much to be learned from the book, especially relationships between the United States, England, France and Spain; establishing international boundaries; the never-ending saga of allowing (or not allowing) whiskey into the Indian country; the tense competition between the fur companies, etc. Better have a dictionary handy too as some of the wording will need defining to the average reader.

After watching yet another infomercial I began to wonder how the business started. Thinking back to when I was a child and watching TV, even then I liked the commercials and can still remember many of the commercials that I watched as a child. There must be more people like me if a commercial can now be an infomercial and last almost 30 minutes. It wasn't hard to find out who was behind infomercial business. Being referred to as the Father of the Modern Infomercial showed the respect that Mr. Hawthorne has from his industry. After reading The Complete Guide to Infomercial Marketing, it made me realize that many of Mr. Hawthorne's experiences in the Direct Response Television market could be used in many, many types of marketing - not just infomercials. Using the checklists in the book enables the advertiser to keep track of how the show is working. Mr. Hawthorne gives hundreds of tips and pointers throughout the book on how to develop strategies, how to be cost effective, how to plan and budget for your product and even how to tie in aftermarketing. I found the Glossary particularly helpful, not knowing 'the language'; it was a huge asset being able to find out what a term means with a layman's definition. The other resources from Mr. Hawthorne's years of experience are invaluable. I feel Mr. Hawthorne is very frank and forthright informing the reader about the infomercial business. The ups and downs, the good and the bad are all touched upon by Hawthorne. . The Complete Guide to Infomercial Marketing can be used as a guidebook for the novice and a reference book for the accomplished.
