            5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-03-29

This book is an excellent resource for any organization seeking to improve its business practices. Kerr identifies seven key elements to proven success and provides a roadmap to institutionalizing them. The who, what, where, when, and why of each technique is clearly defined and demystified.

Unlike many theory guides, this one is written with executives, managers, and business professionals in mind, providing insightful material for all levels. The sample materials and actual case studies reinforce each strategy presented.

This book is highly motivating and will give you and your company the business practices to effectively execute and succeed in today's global market.

I highly recommend this book. It is the first of its kind -- containing real-life examples from industrty as well as thorough how-to methodology segments. This book is a great companion to the many theory books that are so popular today among business readers. Pick it up, you'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars Roadmap To Success.......2006-06-29

For Leadership teams faced with the challenge of developing a strategy for long term success, this book is absolutely a "must read". Kerr offers a holistic approach and a pragmatic plan for overcoming cultural and operational barriers to success, backed by real life examples. I'll introduce the principles in my practice and also recommend The Best Practices Enterprise to colleagues, clients and anyone else interested in solid solutions to tough problems facing enterprises today.

            5 out of 5 stars It's a competitive world!.......2006-05-26

"I really like this book! Its premise is that an organization needs to do these best practices extremely well in order to perform higher order activities that seem to be more glamorous (i.e., Six Sigma, Privacy Management, Business Globalization). I couldn't agree more, we need to go back to basics in order to remain positioned for new opportunities ... it's a competitive world.

My one gripe is that the core material is not particularly novel. But, it is presented in a fresh, new way. I've read Kerr's other books and many magazine articles over the years and he does have a way of reducing complex concepts into their simplest forms so that everyone can understand them. He has done a nice job here, too. If you're an executive, or just want to be one, you should give this book a try."

            3 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Today's Business Environment.......2006-05-24

"The Best Practices Enterprise" is unique in that it contains both visionary and methodolology elements under one title. I particularly like the way in which the author ties the best practices tightly together.

While organizations struggle with the challenges associated with subjects like global stability, privacy management, the environment and energy, Kerr offers a framework through his best practices that all businesses can use to develop the action plans needed to remain successful.

The book helped me alot through my master thesis in self-assessment and also to practice the tool in my company. It helps every one who wants to know more about why organizations need the self-assessment tool, the various models available for assessment, and the different approaches for implementing self-assessment. The only negative is that it does not include case studies. Any way I did not expect that one book can contain every thing I want.... But the book supplies me with 90% of what I need to know about the subject.

Practical guidance is provided on techniques such as making an effectiveness comparison, targeting for improvement, and producing target-setting tables and benchmarking comparison charts.

according to me, schools need for benchmarking more than directly profit-based industry corporations. because, measure succesfull of schools very difficult as objective. thus, we must compare schools for reality measurement results. and this book clarifies key components of benchmarking in schools and school improvement with benchmarking. if prenciples and tecnics in this book apply correctly, it can contribute to effectiveness and efficiency in schools.

More hospital performance data is readily available than ever before, and benchmarking is implicitly required by some Joint Commission standards and CMS measures. Gathering meaningful data is vital in the era of pay for performance, and payers and agencies are calling for more transparency in quality improvement data. The need for benchmarking is clearly growing, and many hospital staff are being asked to run benchmarking projects for the first time. Help is here with HCPro s new book, Benchmarking Basics: A Resource Guide for Healthcare Managers. This resource takes healthcare managers through the benchmarking process, step-by-step. It explains how to implement benchmarking programs that use valid data to answer a variety of questions, make accurate comparisons, and measure a hospital s overall performance, both internally and against facilities nationwide. Readers will also learn when not to benchmark, and how to avoid commonly made mistakes that can affect results. In every chapter of the book, you'll find a concise summary of topics, as well as tips on potential trouble spots and what pitfalls to avoid.

If you're planning, organizing, or actually undertaking a benchmarking program, you need the most authoritative source of information to help you get started and to manage the process all the way through. This powerful guide comes to you from the APQC's International Benchmarking Clearinghouse, known as a world leader in the benchmarking movement.

Written for managers, this guide helps the reader plan, organize, and introduce benchmarking into an organization. The book enables you to understand who should be involved and what steps you need to take for successful benchmarking.

Information from surveys of 87 members of the International Benchmarking Clearinghouse provide unique insights into the benchmarking process, thus enabling you to better plan your own efforts.

A wide variety of other useful information is available in the eight appendixes. You will find definitions of legal and moral behavior in the context of benchmarking and a comparison of process models of various steps involved in benchmarking. An extensive bibliography of benchmarking and total quality management literature is also included.

Book info: I read the 1st edition that was published in 1993.
Pre required knowledge or literature: None
General: The book is hard to read, every topic it handles it immediately goes deep into the subject, therefore you lose track

                  Book content:
In my opinion when talking about benchmarking you are looking e.g. at a process what you want to compare in performance with a standard or reference (process). You would say that ways of quantifying performance of a process for example OEE would be explained in this book, but it isn't. Therefore you get crap like "Section 8: Assessing Quality Maturity" (17% of book) and section 9: "A Bibliography of benchmarking literature" (9%) Appendixes (9%) etc. The book handles everything from a management perspective e.g. how to convince management; calculating costs of benchmarking; project management related issues; basically everything around benchmarking project and therefore forgetting the import issue itself BENCHMARKING.

                    Book Description

This practical book will help organisations and purchasing professionals improve the effectiveness and efficiency of business operations, which for all 21st century businesses is an economic necessity.

Benchmarking or process measurement - the process for assessing effectiveness, is at the heart of any business activity. Benchmarking has an extraordinary impact on corporate finances and operational performance.

Benchmarking Procurement emphasises the need for business leaders to look much more closely at their operational management processes and how they set strategic objectives. The benchmarking process is not about producing comparisons with other organisations, as many believe, it is in fact a quality management programme which allows management to measure the efficiency and contribution from all sectors of the business and to continually improve performance.

The book includes Questionnaires and Benchmark inventory management examples, which the reader will find particularly helpful.

                              5 out of 5 stars Silver Shines.......2003-10-15

Diane Silver and her life partner, Patty Doria, joined with Ben Zimmerman to advocate for the inclusion of "sexual orientation" into the civil rights law in Lawrence, Kansas, and successfully made that city the first legally safe place in Kansas for lesbian and gay couples. (Silver's work always goes deep, as with the brilliant essay published in Ms. magazine, in which she wrote, "I Claim the Title of Widow.") This book offers a no-nonsense but emotionally resonant approach to understanding the issues behind the need for civil rights. Anyone, of any orientation, can benefit from the book's clarity; it would be particularly useful for activists and for people who want to share it with their family and friends, so they can understand.

                                Book Description

A discussion of the silver situation in the United States divides itself naturally into two parts. On the one hand, we have the purely economic aspects of the problem, the working of the silver legislation, its history, the results that have flowed from it in the past or may be expected in the future. On the other hand, we have the intricate and difficult questions of policy involved, the right and wrong of the legislation, the evils or benefits that have ensued and may be expected, the best course to be followed in view of all the emergencies of the situation; the treatment of the problem not only form the economic, but from the wider social and political point of view. Here, as in almost every subject which the economist has occasion to examine, it is advantageous to distinguish between these two classes of considerations. Accordingly, the present monograph will discuss them separately, undertaking first an examination of the economic phenomena, and proceeding thence to a discussion of the questions of policy.

Taussig held his powerful Harvard pulpit until 1935, when that chair was handed over to his more colorful successor, Joseph Schumpeter.

Check out page 46 of the 49 online. It shows the entry for "Tickle" in the index. Of course this should be TCL (Tool Command Language), but the authors are apparently trying to pass themselves off as being more knowledgable than they really are. This is the most preposterous mistake I have seen in any technical book, and I've read hundreds. Would you trust the authors to advise you on how to conduct research when they so miserably failed to research what TCL is? This mistake was pointed out by a previous reviewer, and now they demonstrate it for all to see by making the index available on this very site?! These guys need to TAKE some marketing lessons, not offer them.

This book is packed with good information. I saw the review in Wired,
and couldn't agree more. I've been using the resources identified in
the book and on the companion website. My company did a little
research with some free web survey technology, which wasn't very
useful. Not only does this book explain why (in a way I can
understand and explain to my managers) but it also explains how to do
it right. Lots of good examples thrown in as well. We're gearing up
to run some surveys, and so far, all is well. ... -- I suppose this
book isn't for statisticians, but then, the authors say that up front.
All in all, this is one of the better "how to" books I've
                                            seen for the web.

1 out of 5 stars Online Market Research for Dummies.......2001-02-18

At best this book is a very general overview of market research concepts that are not even specific to online surveys. For instance, don't "lead" the respondent.

Its best isn't very good though. For instance, the authors repeatedly refer to Excel as a bona fide analysis tool. No professional worth his or her salt would use such a tool for this purpose.

At its worst this book is full of misinformation about web development. Before I bought this book, I wish I could have read the review that points out the authors' total misconception about Tcl, or "Tickle" as they call it.

Even more incredibly, there is an entry for "Tickle" in the index!

If you are at an intermediate level or higher in either market research or web development, this book is completely worthless.

2 out of 5 stars Handbook means reference, and this is not a reference.......2001-02-18

There is some good information in this book but for the most part it is far too simple. For instance, almost no attention is paid to the critical topic of validating user data. I've heard this should at the least be done on the server, and possibly on both the client machine (using Javascript) and the server.

Again, no useful information is presented on the matter of preventing respondents from going back and changing data once they have entered it. These are a couple of issues that have been encountered by market researchers who have already managed a web survey or two.

While this book cannot be all things to all readers, it does claim to be a handbook. Handbook means reference, and I expected these topics to be covered better.

This unique and cutting-edge book takes Lean beyond your four walls to the end-to-end supply chain. The authors discuss how to integrate the total value stream — vertically, horizontally, and laterally and achieve success through empowered people and teams, cultural transformation, and an integration of Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and enabling technologies such as ERP, SCM, APS, CRM, PLM, networks, exchangers, and portals. Using the Lean Extended Enterprise Reference Model (LEERM), the authors demonstrate that by deploying the right methodologies and technologies to the right situation you can achieve huge breakthroughs in performance.

This is an excellent book that I have purchased for key leaders in my organization. It does a great job of linking Value Stream Mapping to Lean Concepts.

Being a "real world" lean practitioner and having gone through the many trappings in "going lean," I found T. Burton and S. Boeder's book, "The Lean Extended Enterprise" to be one of the most practical and usefull text on the market. These authors have blended the best of academics, case histories, lean tools, and industrial science to provide a road map to navigate a lean implimentation. I.e., not only on the shop floor, but across the enterprise. This helps preclude the sub-optimiztion syndrome and lack of work organization and syncronization that many of us have experienced while attempting to go "lean."

The book provides a great reference model ("Lean Extended Enterprise Reference Model-LEERM") for understanding the strucure and framework for assisting companies, their customers, and suppliers in transitioning to a total value stream conversion to lean. Unfortuately most books on the subject of lean only address the application of specific lean tools (Kanban, SMED, etc.) and do not provide the strucured methodology necessary for aligning the total organization. The Lean Extended Enterprise Model outlined in the book identifies Panels of Value Stream Integration; (1) Strategic Journey Panel, (2) Best Practices and Principles Panel, (3) Implementation Panel,(4) Methodologies, Tools, and Enabling Technologoes Panel. Additionally the book provides a formal performance measurement tool to support the Lean Extended Enterprise Reference Model. The termed used to define this model by the authors is "Lean Extended Enterprise Assessment Process-LEEAP". Seven major evaluation areas are identified in detail; (1) Leadership, (2) Customer and market focus. (3) Uniform improvement infrastructure, (4) Value stream processes, (5) Extended enterprise integration, (6) organizational learning, and (7) Performance measurement. This book is a must read reference for those companies who are serious about implementing Lean throughout the entire Supply Chain.

What I would thought would bring to me some new concept or ideas to continue to move in the Lean Enterprise direction and conversion, is however a "summary" of all the different available tools, with nothing new about them. Unfortunately not written for those of you who have already started to implement Lean approches in Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Product Development, or else. Good for the ones looking at the different options and trying to see what can be the whole picture...

1 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide to CRM.......2006-02-25

Redundant reference to nearly every main point. This book could easily have been one third the length and twice as effective if the author had been concise.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A hearty Recommendation.......2002-07-31

The author has clearly explained CRM, its premise, it application within the workplace, and its components, processes and technical underpinnings. The book provides the reader with a coherent definition and then backs it up with a CRM action plan that provides a distinct link to business essentials within the scope of a concise understanding of the broad range of processes that it takes to implement CRM. The author does a great job of explaining the necessity of bringing together the business, its processes and technology and does so in a very down to earth manner (no technospeak). The book then provides the reader with a very clear diagram of what is needed to bring a specific CRM application to fruition.

This book provides a very balanced picture of CRM. So if you need to understand CRM, its value, how it relates to business processes and what it takes to implement it, this book is for you. The checklists are invaluable and it gives you basically everything needed for a successful CRM implementation.

5 out of 5 stars There are Many Reasons to Buy this Book.......2002-07-20

The book should be on the reference shelf of any manager or executive contemplating, implementing or working with CRM since it does a wonderful job of covering the business issues and technical parameters and requirements of CRM. For example, the author goes into considerable detail about how and why CRM is important to meeting business requirements and devotes many pages to the vendor and partner selection process. Furthermore, the book covers CRM from not only the IT viewpoint, but also from the departmental manager and executive office's perspective. I think it would be hard to find a book with a more comprehensive road map to CRM. Yet, the book is an easy read.

If you're involved in CRM, or are in a company that is considering CRM then this book should be your CRM Bible. It provides a thorough, well-organized treatise on all aspects of CRM. The author not only provides a full explanation of what CRM is and what CRM IS NOT, she also walks the reader through planning a business case, dealing with the human element, planning stages, project management and finally implementation. Every section is thoroughly covered, from RFP to vendor selection to outsourcing.
