          Book Description

Negotiating on Behalf of Others offers a framework for understanding the complexity and effects of negotiating on behalf of others and explores how current negotiation theory can be modified to account for negotiation agents. Negotiation agents are broadly defined to include legislators, diplomats, salespersons, sports agents, attorneys, and committee chairs—anyone who represents others in a negotiation. Five major negotiation arenas are examined in depth: labor-management relations, international diplomacy, sports agents, legislative process, and agency law. The book concludes with suggestions for future research and specific advice for practitioners. Chapter authors and commentators are leading figures in the field of negotiation. Negotiating on Behalf of Others is a must read for professional negotiators, graduate students, and scholars in the areas of business, public policy, law, international relations, sports, and economics. Negotiating on Behalf of Others is the result of the first of a series of seminars conducted by the faculty of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard on “complicating factors” in negotiations. The first of these complicating factors selected for study was the effect of the presence of an agent on the negotiating process.

          Book Description

Service industries have traditionally lagged manufacturing in adoption of quality management strategies and Six Sigma is no exception. While there are a growing number of books on applying the hot topics of Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing concepts in a manufacturing environment, there has not been a mainstream book that applies these techniques in a service environment, until now. Transactional Six Sigma and Lean Servicing™: Leveraging Manufacturing Concepts to Achieve World Class Service is a ground breaking "how-to" book that serves as a practical guide for implementing Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing methods in a transactional service oriented environment. It uses real case studies and examples to show how Six Sigma and Lean Servicing™ techniques have been implemented and proven effective in achieving substantial documented results. Lean Servicing™ is the author's own term used to describe the application of Lean Manufacturing concepts to transactional and service processes. Liberal use of examples, graphics, and tables will assist you in grasping the difficult concepts. Transactional Six Sigma and Lean Servicing™ covers both theory and practical application of Lean Servicing™, Six Sigma DMAIC and Six Sigma DFSS concepts and methods so you can implement them effectively in your service organization and achieve reduced costs and a new level of service excellence.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who is in Six Sigma or involved with improving quality in their organization........2005-08-27

Having been a Green Belt and now a full time Black Belt, this is the first book that I have found out of several that I have read that is exactly what I am doing day to day. The book is easy to understand and sheds additional light on the processes of Six Sigma. The chapters give excellent examples! The author is very skilled at her trade. She is currently a Master Black Belt and instructor with my organization. I, along with many others rely on her expertise. Thanks Betsi, you're a great mentor.

          2 out of 5 stars Lean Servicing??.......2003-06-07

I bought the book to learn about Lean Servicing. While Lean Servicing is 50% of the title, it is less than 10% of the text. Just one case study/example.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice!.......2003-01-12

If you are a Six Sigma novice or a new Black Belt or Green Belt, this is the book for you! Ehrlich's book takes the mystery out of Six Sigma by explaining the concepts of using Six Sigma and Lean in the service industry succinctly and accurately. The book has great servicing examples that make the concepts very easy to comprehend.

I highly recommend this book and intend to make it a "must read" for my associates.

          2 out of 5 stars Another hype.......2002-10-21

Being a certified MBB I was looking for something with more substance. A typical off the shelf book regading Six Sigma methodology and application. I was expecting more from the lean perspective and it absolutely failed at delivering anything regading lean processing. Just another hype to sell the lean manufacturing priciple with a poor execution.

4 out of 5 stars This is a very good book and green belt reference tool.......2002-10-01

!After having read this book in greater detail a second time I felt obligated to rewrite my review!
Transactional Six Sigma and Lean Servicing is an easy read and laid exceptionally well. If you want to learn how to apply six sigma without all the rollout hoop-la this is a good book for you.
Too many of the newer books spend too much time discussing the road map of a full blown roll-out but lets face it, most of the people purchasing six sigma books are probably trying to apply the DMAIC problem solving approach on their own. If you're one of these people this book is for you.

Since I work in a transactional environment, I thought the Lean Servicing portion of the book, one chapter, would contain some good tips or new insight that I could apply to my gigs, but I was disappointed. The chapter simply describes how to perform a good process analysis.

However, I did enjoy the chapters (1.5 and 1.6) that discussed the history of quality and six sigma. These chapters are very well written and very, very interesting.

Betsi did a masterful job describing DOE and basic statistics in simple terms.

I can't believe how many times I find myself using this book as a reference tool!!

Through their official corporate statements, companies large and small, public and private, set forth their objectives and vision for future growth. Entrepreneurs find the stated goals of established companies valuable in forming their own businesses; students and prospective employees use the statements to gain useful background information on a company's culture. Each of the over 900 alphabetically arranged entries includes the company's name, address, phone number, and Internet address. These data are followed by a brief description of the company and the actual mission statement. Frequently there are two or three written presentations by one company.

              Book Description

Falsey offers a complete guide to the purpose and development of corporate philosophies and mission statements---the codified principles that guide the actions and operations of corporations. In addition to explaining the basic features, goals, and use of mission statements, Falsey also includes detailed information about the philosophies and statements of prominent corporations such as WR Grace & Co., Johnson & Johnson, and others. He shows that in some cases a corporate philosophy can effectively guide a company through difficult times--as was the case with the newsmaking TYLENOL poisoning that threatened to damage seriously the reputation of Johnson & Johnson and the continuing success of an important product. Falsey himself was employed by Johnson & Johnson during the TYLENOL episode and experienced first-hand the positive effects of adherence to an integrated corporate philosophy during times of turmoil. His book draws upon that experience as well as extensive research and in-depth interviews with top executives in a number of major U.S. companies. The result is a comprehensive, practical guide for corporate communications managers and staff charged with the responsibility for developing and disseminating company mission statements, and for top corporate management as well. Every facet of mission statement development and use is covered thoroughly, including assessment of need, key features, writing the mission statement, measuring success, and going beyond the mission statement.

                    Book Description

Highly stratified and regulated by norms and values peculiar to the region, southern society has been idealized and condemned in equal measure. Through the crises of secession, Civil War and Reconstruction, the industrialization of the South, and the ravages of the Great Depression, those who traditionally benefited from this stratification upheld the reactionary tenets of racial exclusivity and strictly defined gender roles and championed the value of religion and religious expression. Despite evidence to the contrary, these ideals formed the basis of what adherents saw as a civilized society and culture, and allowed authority to rest with an alliance of existing and emerging elites. While claiming to represent the interests of society at large, this alliance used issues of gender, race, and religion to divide the working classes and maintain its own position of power.

In Labor's Promised Land, Mark T. Fannin examines the ways in which these social and cultural pillars of southern hierarchy were co-opted by those laboring to organize workers in the South. Using the distinct but related examples of the Brotherhood of Timber Workers and the Southern Tenant Farmers Union as case studies, Fannin illustrates how the central themes of southern identity were used to mobilize the most disillusioned and exploited elements of the working class in the region.

By subverting customary values to promote movements in which solidarity was more powerful than social divisions, these unions challenged the very cornerstones of traditional southern society: women were encouraged to "think and act for themselves," and they assumed leadership roles within the movements; the rhetoric of race was radicalized; and the religious foundations of devout communities were shaken by an approach that reactionaries saw as explicit and often blasphemous. Thus, by upsetting the conservative values and traditions espoused by the agricultural and industrial elites, these organizations provide an important link between the promise of the South and the realization of working-class aspirations.

Using organizational strategies and rhetoric that reconstructed the firmly policed boundaries of "accepted" southern propriety, the unions added momentum to the growing crusade for an egalitarian society in the South—a crusade that would culminate in the civil rights movement.

                    Book Description

When did mass culture first appear in the United States? How was it conceived, produced and disseminated? Who were the main players in its manufacture? Richard Ohmann argues persuasively that the pivotal juncture came at the turn of the twentieth century when magazines began to reach large audiences and to depend heavily on advertising revenues. Mass circulation of magazines, combined with the rise of brand name products, facilitated the emergence of a homogenized mass culture (one produced by the few for the many in the name of profit) for the first time. This epochal change in the making of culture took place through the energy and innovations of diverse agents - publishers, readers, ad men, merchandisers -- acting to achieve disparate but compatible goals. Ohmann shows how their efforts succeeded because they answered to the needs of big business at a time when industrial capitalism's greatest achievements had led to its deepest crisis. Knitting together social and economic history with literary criticism and cultural theory, Ohmann develops a powerful new account of consumer society and of the social class in which it first took root.

3 out of 5 stars Ohmann is a genius, though this is not his best book........1998-09-16

Some critics consider this to be Ohmann's best work, which is odd...a little like praising Isaac Newton for his religious writings rather than gravity or calculus. Richard Ohmann is the genius who wrote "Shaw, the Style and the Man." This landmark book contains a new method for analysing style (all style, not just Shaw's) which lends itself to immediate application in the teaching of composition and rhetoric. The Shaw book is an exciting and useful book, not the usual academic cant. Every teacher of english should commit murder if necessary to acquire it.

5 out of 5 stars A lackluster piece full of superfluous language........1998-09-15

This man writes a lot, but says nothing.

                      Book Description

What are the most fundamental differences among the political economies of the developed world? How do national institutional differences condition economic performance, public policy, and social well-being? Will they survive the pressures for convergence generated by globalization and technological change? These have long been central questions in comparative political economy. This book provides a new and coherent set of answers to them. Building on the new economics of organization, the authors develop an important new theory about which differences among national political economies are most significant for economic policy and performance. Drawing on a distinction between 'liberal' and 'coordinated' market economies, they argue that there is more than one path to economic success. Nations need not converge to a single Anglo-American model. They develop a new theory of 'comparative institutional advantage' that transforms our understanding of international trade, offers new explanations for the response of firms and nations to the challenges of globalization, and provides a new theory of national interest to explain the conduct of nations in international relations. The analysis brings the firm back into the centre of comparative political economy. It provides new perspectives on economic and social policy-making that illuminate the role of business in the development of the welfare state and the dilemmas facing those who make economic policy in the contemporary world. Emphasizing the 'institutional complementarities' that link labour relations, corporate finance, and national legal systems, the authors bring interdisciplinary perspectives to bear on issues of strategic management, economic performance, and institutional change. This pathbreaking work sets new agendas in the study of comparative political economy. As such, it will be of value to academics and graduate students in economics, business, and political science, as well as to many others with interests in international relations, social policy-making, and the law.
