Inspire your students to communicate and reflect through writing!

Using Journals With Reluctant Writers is an effective language arts tool for teachers, especially those who teach at-risk, alternative, and special education students. Designed to inspire even the most reluctant writers, journal topics are followed by non-revealing, non-threatening exercises to introduce writing as a means of expression and to allow students to test teacher reactions. Positive teacher responses then encourage students to move on to material that require more personal reflection and further elaboration.

Whether using the journals for daily practice or weekly assignments, teachers can effectively lead students through critical thinking, self-discovery, and ultimately more relevant and proficient writing. Each chapter begins with a topical, thought-provoking quote and concludes with suggested videos and related readings that can be used for more comprehensive assignments. Using Journals With Reluctant Writers also assists teachers and students in creating a complete language arts portfolio.

Highlights of this teacher’s guide include:

An essential resource for any teacher who wants to motivate students to write well and write often, while thinking critically about their own lives and choices.

5 out of 5 stars For the novice entrepreneur or corporate executive.......2002-05-06

Lessons From Leadership Failures: The Greenfields Approach by management consultant and business start-up expert Denis Orme is an amazing, superbly presented, informative and practical book offering case histories, anecdotal evidence, and cogent advice for making the most of one's business regardless of the produce or service being offered to the marketplace. From the crucial importance of watching one's budget to encouraging teamwork and most importantly, learning from the mistakes of others rather than making the same mistakes all over again, Lessons From Leadership Failures is an encouraging book and excellent guide for the novice entrepreneur or corporate executive wanting to lead their enterprise to an enduring commercial success.

5 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review.......2002-02-12

Lessons From Leadership Failures-The Greenfields Approach is a strategy based on a productive agricultural setting. Imagine for a brief moment that you are a farmer, and when you look outside all you see for many miles are Green Fields. Imagine further that the land is fertile, and that there is an abundance of water. There are no rocks to clear, no trees to fell, just rich fertile land ready for planting of any crop you choose! By applying the Greenfields Approach to business, Denis Orme believes you can envision your potential business and personal opportunities in the same way, without constraint. By doing this, many new opportunities will arise and existing ones will appear different.

The Greenfields Approach is unique and based on a straightforward principle. Too much of the planning and thinking we do is incremental and becomes self-limiting. Too much energy is spent in piece meal planning, benchmarking and strategies. This leads to false assumptions and self-imposed constraints. Denis Orme defines the Greensfields Approach by asking two questions. "If you were starting the business or business unit tomorrow, would you do business the same way?" Secondly, "If you were embarking on a career as a recent graduate, would you launch or grow your career the same way?" He then replies, "If you would not do things the same way, then why are you doing it that way now?"

Lessons From Leadership Failures-The Greenfields Approach has seven chapters and 63 modules. It is a virtual handbook outlining actual leadership failures, the lessons to be learned from these failures and how the reader can do it differently. As Denis Orme candidly writes in the introduction, "This book is about leadership mistakes in each key area of business and the lessons learned from mistakes made by other senior executives and myself." For example, Chapter 5 is entitled Flavor of the Month. In this chapter, Orme cautions against consultants or technologies that attract the latest fad or buzzword to solve problems rather than cost-effective solutions.

Lessons From Leadership Failures-The Greenfields Approach is truly different in approach and purpose. It is not simply another text on leadership, but a serious analysis of past business failures, lessons to be learned and how to do it differently.

This is the most comprehensive analysis to date of Nazi film propaganda in its political, social, and economic contexts, from the pre-war cinema as it fell under the control of the Propaganda Minister, Joseph Goebbels, through to the end of the Second World War. David Welch studies more than one hundred films of all types, identifying those aspects of Nazi ideology that were concealed in the framework of popular entertainment.

              Book Description

This book examines the everyday operations of the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police. How were the Gestapo able to detect the smallest signs of non-compliance with Nazi doctrines, especially `crimes' pertaining to the private spheres of social, family, and sexual life? How could the police enforce policies such as those designed to isolate the Jews or foreign workers with such apparent ease? Robert Gellately argues that there was a three-way interaction between the police, the German people, and the implementation of policy; and that the key factor in the enforcement of Nazi racial policy was the willingness of German citizens to provide the authorities with information about suspected `criminality'.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Close - Up Of The Nazi State.......2001-08-21

Gellately has written an excellent book based on his intimate research of files from a limited area of Germany. Unfortunately, probably for marketing reasons, the book does not focus on its own inherent virtue of offering a close - up rather than a broad - band view of Nazi society; presumably the publishers were reasonably worried that a book titled "How The Gestapo Operated In One Region Of Bavaria" might not have found enough buyers. But what looks like a handicap is really the strength of this book: through its limited scope it offers unique insights into how the terror state operated at bottom level. A shame also that the author often spends too much time bickering with his colleagues and with self - gratisfying moralism. But the strenghts of this work far outweigh its limitations. If you have ever asked yourself how the atrocities of the Nazi system could come to pass, you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Gestapo On Every Street Corner - Sort Of.......1998-03-24

Gellately's research radically alters our understanding of how the secret police operated in Nazi Germany, as well as in the German Democratic Republic and elsewhere. Essentially, Gellately is challenging the notion that the Gestapo was omnipotent, i.e. there was an agent on every corner who provided the regime with all the information it needed. By looking at remaining files in the area of Wurzburg, Gellately found that only a small number of total agents were available to cover a relatively large area. He concludes that even if those agents worked all day and all night, they still would not be able to accumulate the type and amount of information that they did. So, if there was not a Gestapo agent on every corner, how was the regime able to detect the smallest signs of non-compliance and how could they enforce their racial policies? Gellately suggests that the key factor was the willingness of Germans to provide the authorities with information about alleged criminal activities. In fact, most cases began with denunciations or self-policing. In other words, the Gestapo was reactive, not proactive. Gellately suggests that without this cooperation, the Gestapo would have been far less efficient and successful. So just why did the Germans denounce each other? Gellately found that motives were usually quite petty. One had to worry about being denounced by former lovers, business competitors, jealous neighbours, and so on. In fact, Nazi officials tried to put the brakes on the denunciations. In a nutshell, Gellately is suggesting that the secret to the success of the Gestapo was not that it had an agent on every corner, but that the population was so willing to denounce each other for personal gain. The result was an environment of self-policing. There was a Gestapo agent on every police corner, but just in the minds of the German people. But according to Bentham's theory about pan-optic society, that was enough. Germans behaved because they thought they were being watched, whether they were or not was neither here nor there. Gellately's work suggests that there are a lot of problems with the notion of a totalitarian regime. Total control is not only impossible, but not necessary in even the most notorious regimes. Far from being a regime which depended completely on terror and compulsion, the Nazis appear to have been successful largely because of public participation. The only shortcoming is that Gellately's evidence is drawn from one set of files from one part of Germany. We have to assume that the results here would be similar if not identical to other areas, even though we have no evidence from those other areas. Gellately is aware of this and it is beyond his control since most Gestapo files were completely destroyed. This book is a must read for German and Holocaust historians.

              Book Description

The fierce image of the Third Reich has been diffused during the past two decades as fresh research on the social history of the Nazi years has revealed the variety and complexity of the relationships between the Nazi regime and the German people.

Nazism and German Society, 1933-1945 addresses issues such as racism and sexism, active participation, passive resistance and the far from clear-cut distinctions between victims and perpetrators. David Crew's introduction sets out the methodological and theoretical issues with great clarity.

Contributors: David Crew, Omer Bartov, Alf Ludtke, Gisela Bock, Adelheid von Saldern, Klaus-Michael Mallmann and Gerhard Paul, Ian Kershaw, Ulrich Herbert, Detlev J.K. Peukert, and Christopher R. Browning

The articles in this book allows readers to see the disconnect between the National Socialist ideology and the actual practice with in various groups in society (ie workers, women and families.) National Socialism received wide-spread support based on promises they could not fullfill and subsequently focused on racial issues to divert attention from these unfullfilled promises. Food for thought when looking at current world events.

4 out of 5 stars an excellent analysis of German public opinion.......2000-03-28

Bankier has written a trustworthy book about German responses to Nazi antisemitism and propaganda, and the effect of public opinion on the German leadership during World War II. Many books discuss the psychology of persecution in Nazi Germany. Two good ones are Sereny's Into That Darkness and Brown's Ordinary Men. The particular strength of Bankier's book is its breadth of sources. The author draws on, among other sources, regional Gestapo reports, Allied Intelligence Reports and contemporanious observations in letters and diaries. Another strength is its analysis. Bankier certainly holds the Germans accountable. His analysis is profound but it may surprise you by shaking your pre-conceived beliefs. I was especially impressed by his discussion of the wide-spread knowledge in Germany of the "final solution", and Bankier's fascinating analysis of the public reaction to this knowledge.

                Book Description

The Nazis saw film as a major vehicle for both indoctrination and escapist pacification of the masses; in fact, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels tried to create a German counter-Hollywood. This highly acclaimed study, by one of Germanys leading commentators and authors on cultural policy, analyses the pictorial and spoken language of the various film genres in the Third Reich, including news reels, documentaries, feature and cultural films. It shows how a powerful and sinister propaganda machine emerged which, by deploying a wide range of psychological techniques, exerted a strong fascination on the masses. These methods were so successful that they continue to serve as models for totalitarian rgimes to this day.
