This is a dense book, and takes time and effort to read and understood.

If you have read 'The Fifth Discipline', the books of Chris Agyris, and other organizational theory but still thinks something is missing, that they can't really explain how organizations work (but only how they ought to work), this book will get you further. It is not an ends to all means, but definitly an important new consideration.

The book's greatest weakness is the same as many other organization books: it doesn't tell where his theory comes to short, and what consequences the 'organizational-environmental-biospheres' have.
Knowing the very basics about Freud other psychology helps as the book tries to bridge the gap between the psychology and social understanding of organizations.

What the book does, is to represent an interesting link from narcissism (the psychological level) to how subordinates and managers interact (the social/organizational level), to how (and which) employes are promoted and thus which values are amplified among top-level managers. This is then used in the second part of the book to explain the Challenger accident and the big downfall in marketshare of General Motors.

A Business Book That Tells the Truth--For a Change!.......2000-08-06

I have asked Howard Schwartz to write a new edition of this incredibly truthful, and therefore unusual and important book. He hasn't responded to my request---I wish he would update this book to the present. It would be a mind-blower book for the year 2000. Anti-corporate activists MUST read this book to understand what they are up against even though published in 1990.

This book is the ONLY book that uncovers how and why management schools such as the Harvard Business School and others fail to prepare managers to deal with their employees and the public in any other way than abusively! Scwartz teaches organization behavior and knows his subject!

Michael Maccoby has written in the Harvard Business Review (Jan/Feb 2000) that management narcissism is on the increase. Schwartz's book describes what this will mean---especially if, for example, NASA proceeds with Cassini (nuclear powered) type probes. NASA administrators, like all federal administrators, share narcissistic character styles that make their judgements dangerous, because these narcissistic folks are so divorced from reality they would risk their own families to maintain image.

Take the 1986 shuttle disaster. The top administrator said that the chances of failure were 1 in 100,000. The engineers and statisticians said 1 in 20. Why such a lie by the administrator? Because Reagan wanted the Challenger to fly....and among narcissists, who can say no when it's so easy and seemingly necessary to lie to keep one's image!

Do Not Purchase!.......2007-03-31

Do not purchase this book. Buy the 4th edition instead! The verbaige is the same in both editions - almost, if not, identical. The 5th edition changes many of the figures out though - yet leaves the text reflecting the previous figure. If you try to understand by following the figures, your are lost. In many places the referenced dimensions in text are no longer in the figure as they were swapped out. The verbaige is good work. But for those who really want to understand - get the 4th edition. I compared both so that I could learn what I needed to understand. This issue occurs throughout the book, but is really bad throughout the last half of the book - where the subjects get more intense. I was severely disappointed that such distinguished reviewers (listed in preface) could miss so much.

In addtion to that, this book covers almost everthing you need for ASQ Quality Technician Certification, I think this book is even better than the CQT Primer.

Here, Richard Lachmann offers a new answer to an old question: Why did capitalism develop in some parts of early modern Europe but not in others? Finding neither a single cause nor an essentialist unfolding of a state or capitalist system, Lachmann describes the highly contingent development of various polities and economies. He identifies, in particular, conflict among feudal elites--landlords, clerics, kings, and officeholders--as the dynamic which perpetuated manorial economies in some places while propelling elites elsewhere to transform the basis of their control over land and labor. Comparing regions and cities within and across England, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands from the twelfth through eighteenth centuries, Lachmann breaks new ground by showing step by step how the new social relations and political institutions of early modern Europe developed. He demonstrates in detail how feudal elites were pushed toward capitalism as they sought to protect their privileges from rivals in the aftermath of the Reformation. Capitalists in Spite of Themselves is a compelling narrative of how elites and other classes made and responded to political and religious revolutions while gradually creating the nation-states and capitalist markets which still constrain our behavior and order our world. Insights Into The Real World of Marketing.......2002-05-11

I found this book because of its review [in a newspaper] that described the book as the most unique marketing book sold by Amazon.com. It did not disappoint.

Written in a very readable style -- its almost like the author is talking to you over the dinner table --- the book describes Mr Schoenleb's experiences in marketing positions in 11 companies from Procter & Gamble to Burger King and Midas. In each chapter there are "lessons" offered to the reader on what Mr Schoenleb learned from his experiences.

The overall theme of the book is that to succeed in marketing in a company you must match your abilities and plans to a company's internal "culture". He tells fascinating real-life case histories. I particularly enjoyed his chapter on how he selected a new ad agency for Burger King.

A great book for anyone who's interested in how the American business world really works, especially marketers or Ad Agency folks.

But by the end of World War I a revolution in the standards of personal hygiene had taken place. Soap was not only more widely used but was suddenly viewed as a powerful symbol of purification, civilization, and progress. What caused this radical shift in attitudes?

In this fascinating cultural history, illustrated throughout with dozens of period illustrations and advertisements, Juliann Sivulka shows that the transformation of soap from luxury product to everyday staple and symbol of success was the result of both the newly emerging advertising industry and large-scale societal changes brought on by the modernization of daily life. The new emphasis on soap translated into more elaborate cleanliness rituals, creating in turn specialized places devoted to care of the body, more complex domestic interiors, and new customers for an emerging consumer society.

Making use of a large body of primary research material, Sivulka's study reveals that cleanliness came to symbolize a morally superior and civilized individual. Keeping clean, according to advertisements, was not only a healthy habit, it also ensured romance, material abundance, and acceptance into the successful white middle class. Advertisements also reflected women's changing roles as agents of cleanliness, as well as creators of mass cultural images that reinforced narrow stereotypes, which feminists later protested. African American personal cleanliness rituals emerged in a pattern similar to that of their white counterparts, but were informed by the politics of appearance and the uplifting of the race.

This intriguing, lavishly illustrated study is full of insights about the develoment of the consumer culture that we all take for granted.

Soft Soap.......2007-08-05

Sivulka used to teach at the University of South Carolina. She now teaches at Waseda in Japan. I did not care for this book when I reviewed it for the Journal of American History, (Vol. 89 (March 2003): 1450-1451) since I thought Sivulka had a lot of examples of advertising, but really could not analyze advertising or its broader cultural connotations very well. I was also struck by the absence from the bibliography of Susan Strasser's Satisfaction Guaranteed, which I thought an essential work to this study. Then I read Vincent Vinikas's review in the American Historical Review (Vol. 108 (June 2003): 851-52) and found more reasons not to respect this book. My advice is to read Vinikas's Soft Soap, Hard Sell: American Hygiene in an Age of Advertisement

Excellent book that covers the fundamentals of PM. Easy to read, simple, and based on practical experience. Every plant manager should read and keep as a reference. Currently, i am in the process of setting up a maintenance program for 11 plants. I found this book helpful.

I have no prior knowledge on preventive manintenance. This book is very helpfull it covers the basics in a practical point of vue with a lot of helpfull tips. It even provide standard form to get started and to get a better picture.

A Knockout How To Manual.......2002-12-24

Whether you use this as a bookshelf reference or a daily guide in either implementing or fine tuning your own PM program, the book is easy reading and provides a wealth of concepts, actual examples and sound advice. I've had the opportunity to watch this program work and it's dynamite. However, stepping up to this level and creating a new way of operation can be painful. John Gross provides the hard earned experience and guidelines to make your effort more successful and help you avoid the mindfields of being on the cutting edge. This is must reading for any plant manager, plant engineer or plant operations manager. For those running warehouse operations, the concepts apply equally well for facility and equipment support.
