    Book Description

Niklaus Wirth is one of the great pioneers of computer technology and winner of the ACM's A.M. Turing Award, the most prestigious award in computer science. he has made substantial contributions to the development of programming languages, compiler construction, programming methodology, and hardware design. While working at ERH Zurich, he developed the languages Pascal and Modula-2. He also designed an early high performance workstation, the Personal Computer Lilith, and most recently the language and operating system Oberon.

While Wirth has often been praised for his excellent work as a language designer and engineer, he is also an outstanding educatorsomething for which he is not as well known. This book brings together prominent computer scientists to describe Wirth's contributions to education. With the exception of some of his colleagues such as Professors Dijkstra, Hoare, and Rechenberg, all of the contributors to this book are students of Wirth. The essays provide a wide range of contemporary views on modern programming practice and also illuminate the one persistent and pervasive quality found in all his work: his unequivocal demand for simple solutions. The authors and editors hope to pass on their enthusiasm for simple engineering solutions along with their feeling for a man to whom they are all so indebted.

    4 out of 5 stars A Very Inspiring Book.......2002-06-22

This is the first nerd-book that I've read in a _long_ time that I could call inspiring. It got me back to my roots of computer science and applying Occam's razor to everything I see, think, or do. I only gave this a 4 star because one of the chapters is not congruent with the goals of the book. Chalk that up to the ego of that author and ignore it. The rest is great.

If you are an older generation software engineer and feel like you are drowning in the needless complexity of modern day languages like C++, perl, or java, then I think you owe it to yourself to give this book a try.

If you are a newer generation software engineer and haven't seen what some of your predecessors were doing before and around the time of your birth, then you REALLY owe it to yourself to give this book a try.

I was born the same month as Smalltalk. It's one of my favorite languages. When were YOU born?

3 out of 5 stars Almost really interesting.......2002-03-03

This book is a disappointment, but it was very close to good. The articles are mostly anecdotes and project descriptions by Wirth's students. I, too, was expecting more direct descriptions of Wirth's teachings. The glimpses shown here were almost enough, but in the end, unsatisfying.

I'm giving it three stars. If you will do anything to learn more about Wirth, you should certainly read this. For general programming insights of similar ilk other books, such as The Practice of Programming or Meyer's Object-oriented Software Construction, are better places to look.

    3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-08-14

Echoing the previous reviewer's sentiments, I expected to learn more about the person. Instead, you get some short articles (of uneven quality) by his students. Remarkably, the one most aligned with my current job--the Clint network--was the one I found most tedious.

As a minor plus, the book has a really *nice* cover.

I donated my copy to the local library.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-07-17

I purchased this book with the hope of gaining some insight into Niklaus Wirth as a person and an educator. Wirth has made many contributions to the computer science field, so I was hoping for tales from his students and close friends that would relate some of the man behind the magic.

Instead the book reads very much like the proceedings of a technical conference (without a well-defined topic). In fact, many of the essays only relate to the book in that the authors were students of Wirth (or really appreciated his accomplishments) and they thanked Wirth in the introduction and conclusion. I did find a number of the essays to be interesting but I imagine that I could have found a very similar technical paper by searching the ACM or IEEE libraries.

There were few actual insights into Wirth as a person and little discussion of him as an educator. The overriding theme is, of course, that Wirth is a strong proponent of simplicity (it says as much in the title). However, the tie-ins to this theme in each essay usually amounted to simply stating that Wirth demanded simple solutions. A few essays did give some examples such as suggesting the use of simpler algorithms (that are good enough) in lieu of more complicated (and error-prone) but faster algorithms. However, a number of articles reported the number of lines of code and the number of different modules as proof of simplicity.

The book wasn't bad but it wasn't what I was hoping for (what ever is?) or what I had expected.

        5 out of 5 stars This is a marvelous,well written,understandable book........1999-04-10

This book is just what VE has needed. It brings Value Engineering (VE) into the modern world and shows VE to be a system esential to today's business and social environment.

The book is in four sections. The first,"The World Around Us" discusses a number of management systems, cites their strengths and when they should be used in a project development cycle to get the most benefit from each system. One of the systems discussed is VE and the difference between VE and all other management systems, both old and new, is clearly indicted.

The "Economics Of Profit" discusses in detail four essential elements, Cost, Function, Value and Quality and the need for an understanding of each and the relationship of each one to the other to achieve a successful profitable result from effort.

The third section"The Human Element", covers Communiction, Motivation, Teams and Teamwork and Creativity as essential elements for developing any project whether it is business or personal activities.

The fourth section alone is great. "The sum Of The Parts" puts all of the technical and psychological elements together in the VE system and illustrates the operation by means of a simple, actual example of a project from start to finish. the project is discussed in plain language that is readily understandable. In addition, there are eight varied examples of projects that show the potential scope for application of the system from products to business and government organizations to personal affairs. there is also an appendix with a myrid of useful information.

          Book Description

This book, written by planners for planners, will assist the reader in applying microcomputer resources efficiently and imaginatively in solving common planning problems. This is not a book about microcomputers, nor is it a book about planning. It is, rather, the first book to clearly explain and vividly illustrate how a microcomputer is used to solve major classes of planning problems. The authors' examples detail ways to productively employ several planning tools, including spreadsheets, databases, and modeling environments. Further, individual chapters shed light on the microcomputer technology that is relevant to planning but often poorly understood. Current and developing technologies are covered, and a framework for comprehending and evaluating future technological developments is presented. Behavioral implications of the microcomputer revolution are not ignored. The authors examine the evolving role of the planner and planning department in the organization. For those planners feeling confined or confused by computing environments, this book may well point the way to greater independence and understanding. It provides a bridge between the computing world and the planner. Various sections explain how to build, run, and maintain microcomputer-based planning systems. The authors, through their examples, explain the major types of software useful to planners and indicate which type is suitable for each class of planning problem. The examples illustrate good practices to pursue and common pitfalls to avoid in micro-based planning. This book addresses themes and issues common to a broad range of planning operations and applications. It should therefore be accessible to the reader with little formal microcomputer training as well as the veteran who seeks an integrated vision of micro-based planning. This reference belongs in the office of every planner and planning manager who would like to make better use of computing resources.

            Book Description

The services industries—which include jobs ranging from flipping hamburgers to providing investment advice—can no longer be characterized, as they have in the past, as a stagnant sector marked by low productivity growth. They have emerged as one of the most dynamic and innovative segments of the U.S. economy, now accounting for more than three-quarters of gross domestic product. During the 1990s, 19 million additional jobs were created in this sector, while growth was stagnant in the goods-producing sector.

Here, Jack Triplett and Barry Bosworth analyze services sector productivity, demonstrating that fundamental changes have taken place in this sector of the U.S. economy. They show that growth in the services industries fueled the post-1995 expansion in the U.S. productivity and assess the role of information technology in transforming and accelerating services productivity. In addition to their findings for the services sector as a whole, they include separate chapters for a diverse range of industries within the sector, including transportation and communications, wholesale and retail trade, and finance and insurance.

The authors also examine productivity measurement issues, chiefly statistical methods for measuring services industry output. They highlight the importance of making improvements within the U.S. statistical system to provide the more accurate and relevant measures essential for analyzing productivity and economic growth.

Alan Greenspan was quoted in 1998 as saying "the current economic performance ... is as impressive as any I have witnessed in my near half-century of daily observation of the American economy." With inflation down and corporate profits pouring in, it's hard not to share in this optimism. But in the early '90s, things weren't quite this rosy. Richard Lester opens his book The Productive Edge with a recounting of that embarrassing day in Tokyo in 1992 when George Bush coughed up "the barf heard around the world" onto the lap of his dinner companion, the Japanese prime minister. At the time, American industry was in a funk, cowering before the economic might of Japan and Germany. Today, the roles seem reversed, but are they really?

Lester believes that the insecurity and volatility that marked those years is masked but still with us today. He points out that a decade of downsizing, corporate restructuring, and new management techniques has not improved the rate of productivity growth, which he believes to be the "most important measure of any nation's economic performance." The book first looks at the dismal state of productivity in the U.S., then considers examples and extracts lessons from companies in the automobile, steel, semiconductor, and cellular communications industries that have successfully bucked the trend. Lester attacks the total quality movement and corporate reengineering as ineffective and argues that to increase productivity and to lessen the insecurity and volatility lurking just below the surface of the bubbling economy, both business and government must spend more, not less, on research, development, and people. The Productive Edge will open your eyes to the problems inherent in today's economy and offer solutions useful to anyone in business and government. --Harry C. Edwards

              Book Description

Case studies of U.S. industrial performance show how recent gains in productivity in key sectors can serve as models for renewed growth in the economy as a whole. Compared to the early years of this decade, when concerns about the global "competitiveness" of U.S. industries reached an anxiety-laden peak, the past few years have looked positively rosy: inflation and interest rates under control, millions of new jobs created, the federal budget deficit well off its peak, and the stock market rising to unprecedented heights. At least one dark cloud still lurks on the horizon: the lagging overall rate of productivity growth, which has been stuck in low gear since the 1970s, retarding concurrent improvements in living standards. Recently, however, significant new productivity gains have been reported in many important industries, both old and new, including automobiles, semiconductors, steel, electric power generation, and cellular communication. What is it about such industries, and individual firms in those industries, that has enabled them to buck the general trend--in effect, to regain their productive edge? In this wise and illuminating book, a leading authority on this crucial issue searches five recent success stories for clues to shape a new national strategy for economic growth.

                              Book Description

Although the level of U.S. per capita output was higher than that of any other industrialized country at the end of World War II, output has increased by more than four times and per capita output has more than doubled. Empirical evidence has shifted the terms of professional debates over the importance of investment and productivity as sources of postwar growth. This volume traces this outstanding growth performance to investments in tangible assets and human capital.

The distinctive feature of investment as a source of economic growth is that returns can be internalized by the investor. The most straightforward application of this idea is to investments that create property rights. These include rights to transfer the resulting assets and benefit from the incomes that are generated. This volume broadens the meaning of capital formation to include the investments in education and training. The contributions of these investments to economic growth can be identified from their impacts on labor incomes.

After the slowdown in U.S. economic growth that began in 1973 it became apparent that economic research had failed to produce a satisfactory basis for policies to generate growth. This volume provides the starting point for development of a new consensus based on the policies that stimulate and reward investments in tangible assets and human capital. These policies will focus on returns that can be internalized by investors, ending the fruitless search for "spill overs" that can generate growth without providing incentives for capital formation.

This volume examines attempted changes to industrial relations in Britain during 1948-1990, designed to promote institutional reforms of management and trade unions. Specific focus is given to the Donovan Commission and other trade union reforms, and income policies to connect pay more tightly with productivity. International initiatives of the AACP, BPC, and EPA are also included.

                                  Book Description

Ads are everywhere. They are accused of making us smoke, drink, lose weight, and buy things we don't need. But of course we can see through them--or so we say. So how do ads work? How do they draw on and shape the rest of our culture? Ad Worlds is a readable introduction to the ways ads are produced, transmitted and interpreted, drawing on work in cultural studies, discourse analysis and marketing. It argues that advertising is not monolithic or all-powerful, and illustrates the complex and unpredictable effects of ads as they travel through the different worlds of the client, the agency and the medium--before ultimately reaching ours. Myers focuses on the strategies that shape an ad, its circulation, and the responses to it. Each chapter is centred on an analysis of memorable (or not so memorable) ads from Britain and the United States, on posters, on television, or on the World Wide Web. This book deals with critical perspectives on advertising but also shows the author's genuine enjoyment of ads, their ingenuity and excitement.

                                  Book Description

Written by a well-renowned author team, this undergraduate text is intended for the required course for all logistics, transportation, and material management majors, as well as for the logistic elective course for marketing majors. This book is an updated, broadened version of a classic text last published in 1986 and now uses a systems integration of physical distribution, manufacturing support, and procurement for a viewpoint of total logistics management. The book presents a comprehensive description of contemporary logistical practice as it currently exists within the private and public sectors. It also presents a conceptual approach to integration that illustrates how the discipline is likely to change in the future. In-depth treatment of more advanced topics, such as strategic alliances, materials management integration, inventory, information technology, and location analysis, make the text useful for secondary coursework. Comprehensive case material and problems supplement the text.

5 out of 5 stars Covers the landscape of supply chain management.......2001-12-29

As an Consultant and an Information Technology Project Manager, I have to get up to speed on new industries in hurry. If only I had such a tool in other industries. This book was great. After spending just three days reading the book, I had enough knowledge to be credible with the transportation industry people I was going to work with. In fact, their "school of hard knocks" learning could only hope to make those with 30+ years of experience, have as wide ranging a knowledge as I acquired with this book. This book is for anyone wanting to quickly elevate themselves in the area of Logistics.

4 out of 5 stars Logistics for the MBA.......1999-04-15

This book was considered the "qualitative" text at Carnegie Mellon's Graduate School of Industrial Administration as opposed to other more "quantitative" logistical text books available.

This book does a great job discussing the executive and managerial aspects of logistics management. Some of the book topics include: basic logistics, logistical operations, customer service, supply chain relationships, global logistics, resources, forecasting, inventory strategy and material handling. It provides several real-world examples which are quite valuable.

If you are looking for an executive-level logistics book this is great. If you're a logistics manager who needs learn how to run a linear program to optimize your distribution routing, find another text.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, powerful insight using common sense.......2003-07-11

This book makes several key points in terms of how to market a successful web campaign. Not only does Steve King provide a perspective that is understandable, it is presented as common sense. He explains that in order to market your business or product on the Web, you need to know your customer, bottom line. The biggest misconception that I used to share along with most IT professionals is that a website should be created by your IT staff. This may have been what was required as the Internet became popular over a decade ago, but chances are that your IT staff does not understand your target audience. Steve explains, "Right now, most companies we know view the Web first and foremost as a technology and not as a marketing channel."

This book is short and to the point, definitely readable within an hour. Mr. King is able to explain in detail what the Web is to business and how a Website can be presented in such a way that it truly can bring a return on investment in greater numbers than planned for. This book is able to dissect the Web from yesterday and explain how it has become misunderstood today. Finally it includes a strategy going forward for designing a successful Website by marketing it correctly and understanding your customers as you take advantage of the most powerful medium in the world today.

4 out of 5 stars Are you charged with leading web initiatives? -- Must Read!.......2002-11-22

This book takes only a couple of hours to read and will certainly pay back your time when you go about leading your comnpany down the path of using the web as a strategic marketing channel.

Written for high level leaders (and those who want to be) of companies.

Explains exactly why Marketing should be leading your web technology initiatives - not IT. Yes, IT is needed, but they do not know and guide the business like your Marketing arm does.

Want to increase the bottom line? Then focus on your customers, whether they are internal or external, and involve them every step of the way. This book tells you how.

Most excellent high level guidance and a recommended read.

A must read for any executive who wants to stay in the game. Insightful and practical advice about the web, delivered unpretentiously with some light irreverent humor...caused a chuckle or two. A fast easy read for busy professionals. And best of all - no techno-babble - just straight talk.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the "Tech Weanies" Run Your Web Site!.......2002-10-06

The author of this book seems to be from a technical background, but has managed to "catch on" to the marketing relevance of the Web. He makes a powerful argument for a web strategy in this clear and concise little book! He writes that a major part of Web site development requires that the site be viewed as a separate marketing channel for business. He also emphasizes that the behind-the-scenes business strategy should require or dictate that marketing, not IT, control the development of the web site. A successful web site must, in his words, be "customer-centric", and that the development of this site is too important to leave to the technically-minded. As more and more transactions occur over the Net, it is critical that a Web Site be an integral part of any business.

This is a must-read book for any CEO, mid-level executive, and/or IT manager with Web responsibilities!

It is not merely a "How to" but an extraordinarily insightful book to be used as a reference resource that will enable you to create a Web strategy that actually works.

This book is very academic, and clearly intended for MBA students. It tends to focus heavily on "IT fighting" theory, but lacks real world examples of how the author or others have put them to use. As a new IT Manager, I learned a lot from this book about business strategy in general. But I don't feel like it has given me any specific ideas to work on immediately.

Mobile technology extends computing and the Internet into the wireless medium, and provides greater flexibility in communication, collaboration, and information sharing. In this research, we used the 'Value-Focused Thinking' approach to examine the strategic implications of mobile technology in a leading publishing company. The result is a means-ends objective network that depicts the fundamental objectives of using mobile technology and how the fundamental objectives can be achieved through means objectives. The research findings suggest three main strategic implications of mobile technology: (1) improve working process; (2) increase internal communication and knowledge sharing; and (3) enhance sales and marketing effectiveness.
