1 out of 5 stars Not Very In Depth.......2007-01-02

This book really didn't go very deeply into the strategies that help increase your score. He spent a lot of time explaining grammar, but not so much explaining the basic ideas that went into the actual police policy sections of the practice tests. It just wasn't very helpful. I put it down after I found the second typo that changed whether I thought an answer was right or not. (In the reading section, the crime was listed as occurring at 4:30 AM, and he had listed the correct answer as the choice that contained the time as 4:30 PM, among other things.)

      1 out of 5 stars Doesn't help at all.......2004-08-23

This book adds nothing to the preparation for the police exam in California.

1 out of 5 stars Not relevant to Australian candidates.......2003-01-23

I purchased this book with the hope that there would be more focus on the oral interviews and tackling the MMPI/ Psychology testing... but this isn't the case.
Most of the book focussed on the US written exams with 4 main question/ answer analysis and only a cursory overview of the oral stages. If you are in Australia and want information on how to tackle the face to face aspects of your police recruitment then don't bother buying this book- try and find a more specific title. There appeared to be some on the oral interviews but they were out of print. Good luck with your interview !!

2 out of 5 stars Not for todays exams.......2001-01-07

This book does not help out anyone who already has a high school education. The book contains elementry practice tests that are NOT useful for tests given in this era of recruitment.

          1 out of 5 stars Vladimir Kim.......2005-09-02

I bought this book as I was interested in simulating in simprocess. The book is not useful at all neither for an experienced modeller, nor for a beginner. This is of no use for a practical modeller, theoreist or student.

It is more of an entertainment kind of book with very generalistic sporadic examples about where simulation application was successful and funny pictures, double space 16 font text with no content.

For beginners, one should rather buy "Business Process Simulation" by Laguna, which also has a student version of soft. One can go through simulation examples and learn a lot. (I bought this two books together)

In general, if you want to waist your time and money, and read something in half an hour and learn nothing, buy it. But but does it make sense to pay for nothing and make the authors rich just because they are from GACI or Ernst and Young consultancy. Bad use of their brand to promote the sales of the bad book (but probably not so bad software)

I used to use ModSim by CACI on NeXT machine. Now CACI have the easier and PC-compatible, called SimProcess. This book is not only about Simulation sytem, but the great SimProcess user manual. This book is actually a geneal book of Simulation, not a Risk analysis or elses. CD-ROM, come with this book, is the SimProcess. Buy one get another free. But the software can be downloaded from the company website.

              Book Description

Do events of the 1930s carry a message for the 1990s? Lessons from the Great Depression provides an integrated view of the depression, covering the experience in Britain, France, Germany, and the United States. It describes the causes of the depression, why it was so widespread and prolonged, and what brought about eventual recovery.

Peter Temin also finds parallels in recent history, in the relentless deflationary course followed by the U.S. Federal Reserve Board and the British government in the early 1980s, and in the dogged adherence by the Reagan administration to policies generated by a discredited economic theory - supply-side economics.

Peter Temin is Professor of Economics at MIT.

5 out of 5 stars A Compelling Study of the Great Depression: The Gold Standard is Largely to Blame.......2007-07-12

Peter Temin rigorously explains the economics of the Great Depression and the lessons to be learned from the economics of the Great Depression. He explains convincingly that the gold standard was mainly to blame for the Great Depression. It was a Federal Reserve contraction of the money supply that began a recession, and then it was the gold standard that turned it into a catastrophic depression. To be specific, the gold standard imposed a severe tightening of the gold standard, and stubborn efforts by political leaders in several countries to maintain the gold standard strangled the economy further. In America, it was the Republican Party that had long supported the gold standard. It was reestablished when Calvin Coolidge was president.

The countries that left the gold standard quickly, such as Great Britain, recovered the soonest from the Great Depression.

The book praises FDR for abondoning the gold standard. Note that this is an economic history and not a political or social history. This book is for economists or general readers with a strong interest in the period. The analysis fits nicely with monetary economics but used standard equations relating to Keynesian economics.

Peter Temin established himself as one of the greatest economists of the Great Depression. That was his speciality.

Also consider "Essays on the Great Depression" by Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve and America's top economist.

4 out of 5 stars Taking the long view.......2001-06-02

Temin's account of the Great Depression differs in almost every from the standard texts. Austrian business cycles, monetary tightness etc. are all passed over as the author goes for the big picture....the long view of political history in Europe.

The Great Depression was the direct result, he says, of the breakdown of peace in the first decade of the twentieth century. The international spirit of co-operation that had existed throughout most of the second half of the 19th century evaporated with the European struggles for empire. So when crisis loomed in the late 1920s all the lifeboats were full of holes. Franco-German rivallry, the demise of the British Empire and isolationism in the United States all produced paralysis when leadership was needed most.

When leadership finally did arrive, it came in the form of social democracy and labour market rigidities which put a floor under the markets but extended the depression in ways not dissimilar to Japan in the 1990s.

If you like your economics filled with Keynes and history this is for you. If Friedman or Schumpeter is more to your taste, then this is worth reading just to see what the other side thinks.

              Great stuff.

              Book Description

"Globalization" is here. Signified by an increasingly close economic interconnection that has led to profound political and social change around the world, the process seems irreversible. In this book, however, Harold James provides a sobering historical perspective, exploring the circumstances in which the globally integrated world of an earlier era broke down under the pressure of unexpected events.

James examines one of the great historical nightmares of the twentieth century: the collapse of globalism in the Great Depression. Analyzing this collapse in terms of three main components of global economics--capital flows, trade, and international migration--James argues that it was not simply a consequence of the strains of World War I but resulted from the interplay of resentments against all these elements of mobility, as well as from the policies and institutions designed to assuage the threats of globalism. Could it happen again? There are significant parallels today: highly integrated systems are inherently vulnerable to collapse, and world financial markets are vulnerable and unstable. While James does not foresee another Great Depression, his book provides a cautionary tale in which institutions meant to save the world from the consequences of globalization--think WTO and IMF, in our own time--ended by destroying both prosperity and peace.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written and scary.......2002-07-05

This well written, documented and academic book reads like a novel. Author explains how the British global-led economy was structured in the 19th century, its weaknesses and how it unraveled in the 1920s and 1930s. He reviews monetary policies, banking instability in the pre- and Depression era, trade and its collapse, the rising reaction against international migration starting in the 1890s and culminating after World War I, the opposition between nationalism and capital that existed after 1929 and finally assesses if a new depression could occur again. Despite the dates, the events it describes look so familiar to us today that it sends shivers down the spine.

Written in 2001, the author was still optimistic in his conclusions saying that unlike the 1930s, nobody today was challenging global finacial orthodoxy. But since Ben Laden destroyed the World Trade Center, Argentina has collapsed like in the 1930s, Brazil is on the path to renege its debt just like in 1931, many scandals have shaken Corporate America, stocks have fallen to after-September 11 levels. Le Pen, a right-extremist was a contender to Chirac in the French presidential elections. Migrations have become a hot debate in Europe. The Bush Administration like the Hoover one puts barriers on international trade (steel), does not participate in multilateral debates (UN, Climate, International Court) damaging the system of multilateral organizations, debates and trade. These collapsed in the 1930s to be replaced by bilaterel relations with the known consequences: a global depression and a global war.

                  Book Description

Education & the Great Depression: Lessons from a Global History examines the history of schools in terms of pedagogies, curricula, policies, and practices at the point of intersection with worldwide patterns of economic crisis, political instability, and social transformation. Examining the Great Depression in the historical contexts of Egypt, Turkey, Germany, Brazil, and New Zealand and in the regional contexts of the United States, including Virginia, New York City, Cleveland, Chicago, and South Carolina, this collection broadens our understanding of the scope of this crisis while also locating more familiar American examples in a global framework.

                        Book Description

Economists as diverse in approach as Lord Keynes and Milton Friedman have analyzed the causes of the Great Depression, and their answers have ranged from underconsumption to failings in monetary policy. In Part 1 of the Great Depression, Christian Saint-Etienne compares these theories with economic statistics for the interwar period and adds a further explanation: a collapse in international trade initiated by the Hawley-Smoot Tariff in the United States. Part 2 studies the economic history of the 1970s and the early 1980s to assess the likelhood of a depression in the 1980s. Among the author's recommendations for preventing a recurrence are free trade, reform of the international banking system, and coordination of the monetary policies of the major industrial nations.

From the supplier: People who lived through the Depression managed by helping one another and growing stronger from the experience. It may not be possible now for most people to make it through another economic depression. Homesteaders should learn to be self-sufficient and avoid falling into debt.

                                    Book Description

Aiming to support the development of a framework for the analysis of risk in project design and economic analysis, this handbook outlines technical approaches to modeling risk. Also summarized is the nature and practice of sensitivity analysis in dealing with uncertain outcomes as well as the principles to consider in typical risk analysis situations sector by sector. Case studies are included to demonstrate the application of quantitative risk analysis using actual Asian Development Bank projects to help improve project design and quality. Handbook users will learn to identify factors that are the key determinants of project outcomes, determine the likelihood of an individual project's returns being unacceptable, and design measures to mitigate the risks arising from the identified key factors.
