    Book Description

As any school principal or adminstrator can tell you, the responsibilities of school leadership can take a person from inspired moments to crisis in an instant. How does a school leader with good intentions preserve a healthy sense of self in the face of a crisis which in the best of times challenges the self, and in the worst of times can lead to deep wounds of the heart? How can good leaders minimize the impact of these crises and remain open to learn and grow from these difficult experiences? These are the questions at the heart of the stories contained in The Wounded Leader.

Through compelling stories that illustrate many of the common dilemmas faced by school leaders, the authors highlight the many paths to healing, and show how sometimes the most painful experience can be an opportunity for growth.

"All leaders incur wounds. The Wounded Leader enables us to understand our wounds, learn from them....and begin to heal." - Roland Barth, Founder of Harvard Principals' Center

"Not only is the book full of fresh ideas and new insights but it is a fun read. It is not the usual leadership book that reads much like the other leadership books but stands out as an original contribution...easily presented and scholarly without being pretentious." - Thomas J. Sergiovanni, Center for Educational Leadership at Trinity College, San Antonio, Texas

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for school principals.......2007-09-23

Ackerman and Maslin-Ostrowski have carved an important niche for themselves in the world of Educational Leadership literature. They do a masterful job weaving stories of leadership trials and tribulations while relating them to a well-considered framework for this study.

A fully-detailed explanation of the qualitative study for this work is included in the appendix. The book serves as a valuable resource for anyone involved in qualitative research, providing an excellent example of how this is done.

Beyond its value to Education Leadership academics, it is a valuable read for principals who have suffered wounds of their own. It might serve to relieve the sense of separation that is often felt by leaders suffering from various emotional crises or self-doubts suffered on the job.

I highly recommend this book for academics and school leaders alike.

5 out of 5 stars An important, redemptive, eminently practical book!!.......2002-04-21

"The Wounded Leader" is a wonderful new work for school leaders--however embattled we/they may find our/themselves in any particular context or at any particular moment. It is an eminently wise, provocative book, whose thesis is amply documented and very well illustrated by the various core narratives it offers its readers.

"The Wounded Leader" is about the healing power of stories and story-telling. For me, its subtitle gives a better sense of what this book is about: "How Real Leadership Emerges in Times of Crisis." Drawing from a diverse array of inspired sources (from Heifetz and Kegan and Gardner and Bennis to Parker Palmer and Daniel Goleman, e.g.), Ackerman and Maslin-Ostrowski masterfully synthesize an analysis of "how school leaders respond to and make sense of their wounds." Stressing the meaning-making and redemptive power of narratives, the authors show how the stories we tell ourselves and each other about the challenges we face ultimately inform and reveal who we are. The most successful leaders, they imply, are the most authentic ones. "Leadership," they write, "has been described as the capacity to be totally and utterly oneself, to be able to show up fully, to express oneself, and to share this self with an organization that one cares about and wants to influence. If this is the case, then wounding at its worst means leaving the self outside the school, becoming a hollow stranger to oneself and one's leadership altogether."

By framing "crisis [as] an emergent occasion for transformation," Maslin-Ostrowski and Ackerman reveal how we can be changed and tempered enough to learn and grow from our leadership wounds. Its fundamental message is thus profoundly affirmative and reassuring. Moreover, the book (at less than 150 pp.) is a slim (i.e. user-friendly!) volume written in readily accessible prose, enlivened by many aptly chosen narrative anecdotes. I recommend that educational leaders have a copy handy to review and refresh themselves at all times--either on our bookshelves at work or on our bedside tables at night--in order to help us regain our bearings whenever our leadership going gets toughest.

          Book Description

We all know that American business needs fixing, and there is no shortage of prescriptions: imitate the Japanese, or follow the example of successful firms, or practice right-sizing. But these approaches do not work very well, says Russell Ackoff, because they only attack the problem piecemeal--and it is the entire system of American business that is flawed. In this revolutionary new book by a widely respected business thinker and pioneer in the fields of operations research and systems thinking, Ackoff underscores the urgent need to overhaul the kinds of systems found in America, from our business schools to our boardrooms. And he shows how firms can break out of the mold--and leapfrog the competition in today's volatile economy. To give managers insight into the concept of organizations, Ackoff shows how they have been viewed since the Renaissance: first as machines, later as organisms, and today as social systems. As social systems, companies produce and distribute wealth and raise our standard of living. They are also responsible for facilitating and encouraging the development of the larger systems that contain them and all their stakeholders. The quality of worklife within an organization is key. Work has to be challenging and enjoyable if workers are to give it their full commitment, and Ackoff outlines major ways to achieve this goal. Along the way, Ackoff explodes a number of fashionable business notions. He asserts that firms that try to imitate successful competitors are doomed to play catch-up forever. He attacks the idea of continuous improvement, showing that it has failed to make quantum leaps in quality, and he demonstrates how to re-orient the pursuit of quality. After revealing the weakness in many current practices, Ackoff describes three organizational schemes that will lead to success. In the Circular Organization, a democratic hierarchy, everyone participates directly or indirectly in decisions that affect their work. In the Internal Market Economy, organizations treat their different parts like a collection of firms doing business with each other--which promotes cooperation and eliminates wasteful internal competition. And with the Multidimensional Organization, a company becomes so powerful and flexible that continuous adaptation can happen without reorganization. Ackoff caps off the book with an incisive critique of business schools, describing how they must be transformed to turn out the leaders we need for the competitive American organization of the 21st century. Enabling managers to understand the profound interrelationships in the American economy and to tap into them for success, The Democratic Corporation is a major work by an innovative thinker that is certain to cause ripples throughout the business community.

1 out of 5 stars personally his writing style needs help.......1999-04-01

to be quite frank, he could have done better, the content was informative but his explanation were too wordy and repetative. he could have explained his system thinking theory's in half as much time by sticking to the point, not adding paraphrases that were confusing and misleading. question is "does he get paid by the number of words he uses or the content?".

5 out of 5 stars Are democracy and free market good organization principles?.......1997-06-19

Ackoff presents his organization design based on democracy and free market as organization principles. Most people generally believe democracy and free market are good principles for societies, while most business and government organizations have internal organizations based on autocratic authority and monopoly of services, resources and markets. Why does this happen? Ackoff is very objective in his view of the corporations as social systems, which must satisfy their stakeholders. He presents very objective solutions for the problems of quality of working life, power and authority distribution, performance evaluation and control and structure design. The title of this book promises a radical prescription, and that is a very good description of the contents. The book is dense with well thought, well developed ideas, with examples of their successful application! If you have a position about democracy and free market you should carefully read this book, even if you don't agree with everything Ackoff proposes.

            Book Description

`Cummings’ book is very interesting, refreshing and intellectually stimulating… It should be a mandatory textbook for all serious students of management' - Management Learning

`Stephen Cummings’ Recreating Strategy is currently the best book on strategy, combining a holistic and critical understanding of the issue' - Stewart Clegg, University of Technology, Sydney

`An imaginative attempt to bring together and apply the many analytical frameworks relating to the organization as a whole into strategy theory and practice. Written for students on strategy, change management and more general management and organization theory courses. Encourages students to question assumptions and think creatively about strategy and management. Stimulating and original' - Long Range Planning

`In this intriguing book [Cummings] claims to be surprised that academics critical of management theory don't critique its history, and proposes a kind of liberation theology in response, but this is not as doctrinaire. It's more like replacing some well-justified habits with a refreshing originality of approach. The outcome is stimulating.... The author offers a cogently argued deconstruction of some well-known frameworks in strategy, and delivers his own reinterpretation of strategic discourse. There are five longer case studies in the book and several shorter vignettes scattered throughout early chapters, as well as pedagogical aids at the end of each chapter' - Best of Biz, The Business Information Site

`Do you worry about organizations becoming slaves to markets? Do you wish that organizations had the nerve to build their own ethos rather than just grubbing for profit? Do you aspire to inspiration rather than perspiration? Why does management practice get in the way of thinking and creativity? Stephen Cummings provides insight and guidance in a book of genuine scholarship and creativity' - John McGee, President of the Strategic Management Society, USA

`Management courses need more of what Stephen is offering. He wants us to go on an `unlearning curve', one which leads to fresh thinking about strategy and the emerging roles and responsibilities of business and companies. This book not only tells us where we are coming from but, more importantly, it inspires us to think profoundly about where we could go. It's also a very good read' - Josephine Green, Director of Trends and Strategy, Philips

`ReCreating Strategy provides a challenging examination of the emergence of management which combines postmodern and orthodox perspectives. Stephen Cummings is able to provide not only a fresh treatment of strategy and ethics but also to engage with a variety of potential audiences. He provokes and informs in equal measure' - Richard Whipp, Cardiff University

'A truly eclectic approach to strategy! Intellectually capturing, the book is great fun to read at the same time. A must for those who want to discuss management beyond styles, fads and fashions' - Hubert Wagner, Qonsult

ReCreating Strategy is written for students of strategy, change management and more general management and organization theory courses. It will provide a better understanding of how to bring together and apply the many analytical frameworks relating to the organization as a whole.

Stephen Cummings challenges the view that there is never one best framework and shows why the latest theory is not necessarily better than earlier ones.

The textbook includes short and long case studies, interesting pictorial aids and examples, and a generally more participative and rewarding approach than that offered by more mainstream texts. PowerPoint slides to accompany the book are now also available by clicking on the link to `Sample Chapters and Resources' in the left hand margin. The book also offers more scope for individual lecturers who wish to encourage students to question assumptions and think creatively about strategy and management.

Pretty funny. As one of the "co-authors" of this book, I can definitely say this book was never written. It never got further than a title and outline sent to us by the publisher as an invitation to write. We decided we didn't want to write it, and in fact it seemed like a bad idea for a book. No proposal was written, no contract offered. But somehow it got into the world's databases and has resurfaced on various order forms ever since.

By virtue of not existing, this book is actually BETTER than a significant percentage of real books. Makes an author quietly proud.

              Book Description

Law and economics is the leading intellectual movement in law today. This book examines the first great law and economics movement in the early part of the twentieth century through the work of one of its most original thinkers, Robert Hale. Beginning in the 1890s and continuing through the 1930s, progressive academics in law and economics mounted parallel assaults on free-market economic principles. They showed first that "private," unregulated economic relations were in fact determined by a state-imposed regime of property and contract rights. Second, they showed that the particular regime of rights that existed at that time was hard to square with any common-sense notions of social justice.

Today, Hale is best known among contemporary legal academics and philosophers for his groundbreaking writings on coercion and consent in market relations. The bulk of his writing, however, consisted of a critique of natural property rights. Taken together, these writings on coercion and property rights offer one of the most profound and elaborated critiques of libertarianism, far outshining the better-known efforts of Richard Ely and John R. Commons. In his writings on public utility regulation, Hale also made important contributions to a theory of just, market-based distribution.

This first, full-length study of Hale's work should be of interest to legal, economic, and intellectual historians.

              3 out of 5 stars Incomplete.......2003-11-02

I'm guessing that the previous review did not ask for Hale's rebuttal to Hayek but for Fried's. So in that respect it is not anachronistic.
The review on March 10 of 2003 also claims that Hale was writing in the field of law, while Hayek was writing in economics. This person obviously has not read much of Hayek. Hayek was an economist and he did win the Nobel in economics. However, Hayek was known more for being a social philosopher than an economist. His most popular and best-selling books reflect this point. His major works deal more with general political philosophy and legal theory. (Law, Legislation and Liberty, The Constitution of Liberty, and even The Road to Serfdom. These books deal heavily with political philosphy and legal theory. Same field or at least related to what Hale was writing about.) So a rebuttal to Hayek is far from foolish. You'd think that a book attacking the classical liberal theory would mention the philosopher who most espoused that theory.

5 out of 5 stars Beware of libertarian.......2003-03-11

Asking for Hale's rebuttal to Hayek is foolish because (a) it is anacronistic and (b) Hale was writing in the field of law, while Hayek was writing in economics. The introduction and an excerpt (which you can see here on Amazon) describe the laissez-faire rhetoric that Hale was refuting.

Hale clearly explains why laissez-faire is wrong about liberty: all property is a grant of unaccountable private power from the state. Thus, it doesn't matter if liberty is infringed by the state retaining the power or private owners abusing the power (as in the cases of monopolies, public utilities, and opposition to unions.) Those were Hale's primary interests throughout his career. And interestingly, they are also precisely places where Hayek's social calculation arguments fail.

Hale (and Fried) don't bother explaining why they thought their alternative was better: the progressive case was being widely made elsewhere at the time. Hale's contribution was to specialize in kicking out the supports of laissez-faire so that progressive arguments could compete fairly with extremist capitalist arguments.

4 out of 5 stars The best reveiw of Robert Hale's work to date.......2000-05-29

While I certainly cannot agree that this book, or its principal subject, Robert Hale, present anything close to "one of the best demolitions" of laissez-faire, this book is quite intriguing; and I think that anyone who is in the business of defending the concepts of laissez-faire or present-day libertarianism would do well to ponder upon Hale's arguments. This is not to say that a full understanding of Hale is essential (it may even be stretching it to say useful) for a complete defense of laissez-faire, but he certainly does present an intellectual and philisophical challenge for it's adherants. Fried does an excellent job of documenting and reiterating Hale's approach to legal theory and the early 20th century thought underlying it - but in the end, we are really only left with Hale's analysis which, while intriguing and ingenious, is little more than an intellectual puzzle the ramifications of which even Fried (an evident admirer) expresses some skepticism.

Hale's attempts to defeat the concept of laissez-faire (linguistically) put him in the position of beating up on traditionalists like Thomas Nixon Carver, without giving us any practical reason as to why they were right or wrong. Even if we were to take Hale's central argument as correct, (he essentially contests the idea of a minimalist state as conceptually incoherent) Hale gives litte to no insight as to why the "coercion" he advocates is preferable to the "coercion" of the marketplace. Only once in Fried's book is the antithesis of Hale, Frederich Hayek, mentioned - whose defense of laissez-faire was primarily based on it's efficiency in conveying vast amounts of interspresed and fragmented knowledge as to the opportunity costs of goods and labor, and contantly changing values and preferences throughout complex societies. Yet it is this argument which is (by far) more central to the debate about laissez-faire - and this argument which Hale essentially ignores - preferring instead to defeat classic liberals on their choice of terms. Even if he were right, Hale gets us absoultely nowhere; not to mention, as does Fried, that Hale's expansive notion of "coercion" to include any form of human conduct tends to embarrass the idea of free speech or the civil rights movement - of which his progressive counterparts have been so active in protecting.

The book does not only deal with the so-called "empty" ideas of liberty and property, but also extends to Hale's analysis of "suplus value" of property and rate regulation of monopolies. There are problems here as well - but by far the most important are his idea regarding freedom and coercion. Hale is a intellectual challenge, but really nothing more - and while he clearly rejects the conceptions of liberty and property as they were conceived in the Lochner era, he gives us no good reason to do the same; and at times it seemed that even Fried wanted to pop Hale's balloon - but for some reason could never quite bring herself to do it.

5 out of 5 stars An important work for modern liberals........2000-01-18

This is an essential book for understanding the major changes in legal theory of the progressive era. The change from classical liberalism to modern progressive liberalism was profound, and required the abolition of a number of myths presumed by law and the judiciary. These myths have since been resurrected by the libertarians, and it is enlightening to see the satisfying reasons why they were rejected so long ago. It's easy to tell how threatened libertarians feel about this by the vehemence of their attacks.

The Internet and brands are probably the two hottest business topics of the moment. So Phil Carpenter's timely book eBrands, which looks at building brands on the Internet, scores a double whammy on the business groove-o-meter. Carpenter, director of corporate marketing for Silicon Valley start-up Remarq, foregoes the theoretical, business-school approach in favor of the more easily absorbed case-study method, with detailed analysis, interviews, and behind-the-scenes peeks at six Internet businesses that have already established themselves successfully as brands. They include Yahoo!, Fogdog Sports, iVillage, and Barnesandnoble.com.

Carpenter's basic argument is: "In an environment characterized by extreme choice, perplexed customers will turn to the familiar. They will establish relationships with specific Internet brands and do business with them repeatedly." The book is thoroughly researched. In fact, it's amazing Carpenter got his subjects to share so openly and honestly, not only their learning but also the details of their mistakes. For instance, he writes of online CD retailer CDNow's customer acquisition program, "CDNow is already paying an average of $45 per person for each new customer.... this puts even more pressure on CDNOW to wring greater value from online shoppers".

Carpenter makes much of the point that a brand is far more than a logo or marquee and includes everything the company does, from publicity to answering the phone to order fulfillment. While it's an argument that will be old hat to anybody with a marketing background, it's a point well made for those coming from a more technical or general business environment--as many net entrepreneurs tend to do. This is an excellent marketing primer for anyone who needs to know how to make e-business work. --Alex Benady, Amazon.co.uk

                  Book Description

Essential Strategies for Building Powerful eBrands

At the turn of the millennium, myriad companies have filled the Web with more than 800 million pages of content. Overwhelmed by choice and starved for time, customers are casting their clicks with brands they trust. The companies that win their wallets will be those that invest now in building premier electronic brands, or eBrands.

While scores of books have promoted various Internet marketing tactics and Web site design rules, none has provided the necessary strategic context in which true eBrand builders make names for themselves. Through thoughtful analysis of the overall marketing strategies of six Web innovators--Yahoo!, CDNow, iVillage, Onsale, Barnesandnoble.com, and Fogdog Sports--veteran Silicon Valley marketing executive Phil Carpenter takes a hard look at how a core set of companies have pushed to develop powerful Internet brands.

Carpenter takes readers backstage in his in-depth interviews with more than forty company executives and industry experts. Recounting the successes, failures, and fears of eBrand pioneers, the author assesses the opportunities and vulnerabilities of his case study companies compared to those of their on- and offline competitors. His analysis shows how several "pure play" Internet ventures have established brand awareness and credibility, how an offline leader has boldly asserted itself in this new medium, and how a start-up has battled to distinguish its brand among the many deeper-pocketed players.

Carpenter argues that Internet contenders must expand their notion of branding far beyond such assets as logotypes, trademarks, and brand names to include programs for building brand awareness, forging alliances, and cultivating customer loyalty, to name a few. Through these bedrock best practices distilled from the experiences of the online elite, even a dot.com nobody can become a cyberbranded star.

For anyone with a stake in ebusiness--from CEOs to entrepreneurs, from marketers to customer service and PR specialists, and from venture capitalists to financial analysts-- eBrands will prove a thoughtful guide to creating truly durable brands in the electronic marketplace.

EBrands was written quite a while ago...when the world was a different place. That said, many of the ideas and concepts discussed in the book are still quite relevant. In today's economy brands are built online everyday. The lessons outlined in this book should be helpful for anyone interested in building sustainable brands.

5 out of 5 stars Kind of funny given current market....but a good eBook still.......2001-04-04

This author is very knowledgeable about Silicon Valley and has some great insights. He picked Yahoo!, CDNow, iVillage, Onsale, Barnesandnoble.com, and Fogdog Sports to show how quickly a powerful brand could be built with the web growing like it was. Problem is...only one of these brands still matters - Yahoo.

Still the book is a must read for anyone trying to create a standalone branded website or online service. Gives some pretty compelling tips and histories on what works and doesn't. Also like the eBook format for this one...you'll want to skim and bookmark and highlight and the eBook Reader is pretty helpful for that. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Clear overview of e-branding.......2001-01-31

Phil Carpenter has set up a very well-written, easy-to-read, book about the various aspects of marketing an e-business. By offering a load of examples, he helps the reader with quickly identifying the possibilities of online of offline branding. What he might have added, to add some quantitative research, is some more figures concerning investments, as percentage of revenue. Furthermore it would have been interesting to see that the investements are worth it, so the relation between investment patterns and sales. Concluding: this book offers a good marketing overview, and offers some new insides, worthy to be explored.

3 out of 5 stars good cases, not a lot of hands on stuff.......2000-12-31

The author offers interesting profiles of how six companies have gone online line. He highlights his take on what these companies do right and where they appear to fall short. But this isn't the type of book you'd be able to use as a guide to taking your own business online. There's not a lot here that's readily transferable to other businesses wanting to go online or to improve their current offerings. Still, as a snapshot in time, it makes for an interesting read.

3 out of 5 stars Marketing Analysts, this book is not for you.......2000-10-30

"Branding on the Internet". If you go to any multi-day web seminar these days you will surely run into a class on this subject. Most of these classes spend a few hours talking about successful (and not) examples in the Internet without going into the research.

This book uses a similar approach. For the business/marketing person this book will be frustrating, with its basic findings (e.g. using a banner). The problem is this book was not meant for the marketing person as a lesson on how to brand their company on the Internet. This book was written for the web designer, as an introduction to branding.

The book itself has a problem in that the only company profiled that can be considered a success would be Yahoo! Anyone who uses the Internet regularly will recognize most of the other sites, but has anyone ever bought anything, or even visited these sites?

The author claims that when people are faced with unclear choices they will revert to what is comfortable, which is true. The question that arises is, other than Yahoo! do you feel comfortable with any of these companies. It seems the author chose second-tier websites because the top-tier weren't available.

I work as a consultant for ERP system implementations. This book explains how many problems are inherent to Project Management, and what to do in many cases.

For example: Jolyon will explain how to set up estimates, and then ask questions like ýWhat if the customer thinks your estimates are too low?ý and propose a course of action. The book also contains many useful check lists. In this book I found the most detailed explanation on how to set up a Project Schedule (WBS, dependencies, et cetera), Project Budget, and follow up I have read.

                  I highly recommend this book.
