      "You're the Buyer" underscores the value of purchasing to the bottom line profits. The book is designed to help you develop your skills in negotiation. Menard starts by redefining negotiation. He compares the adversarial view and the advantageous view. He then introduces additional topics such as a negotiation plan, negotiation strategies, communication skills, interpersonal factors, and legal considerations, and other related important issues.

      Menard maintains that Total Cost Ownership is the single most important principle in supply chain management and that Cost Analysis is the single most important tool in negotiation. The objective of negotiation is to get the lowest total cost of ownership.

      Easy to remember acronyms, for example, QDPS Quality, Delivery, Price, Service, provide prompts for reviewing and assimilating the material while on hold on a telephone call, or when driving to your next appointment.

      I liked the conversational style of many of Menard's illustrations and examples. I found them to be particularly beneficial as they were broad enough to understand and yet specific enough to make personal application in any field of endeavor.

      The format is an easy to read style with graphics, matrix, and charts. Menard includes illustrations, and examples to reinforce his negotiation principles and concepts. The paragraph headers, various check lists, and chapter summaries are presented for ease in reading and result in a comprehensive understanding. The book is designed to be used as a reference resource. Menard provides several practice scenarios, exercises, and templates in the appendices to help you with your negotiation strategy. This will be a valuable tool to include in your business library.

      The Supplier Certification Program is described in chapter four with a preliminary certification checklist. This may be of particular value to many who read this book.

      The book is filled with practical tools and techniques for immediate application. I think you will find this book to be the most influential book available on successful negotiation. I'm sure you will benefit from the hands-on examples and useful action steps suggestions.

      I highly recommend Mendard's definitive book for every CEO, and every other company executive concerned with bottom line results.

      Robert Menard has become the guru of negotiating. He is active as a speaker, trainer and consultant in the field of purchasing and negotiation. His expertise will continue to serve you well in years to come.

      Quality System Assessors are deployed both by registration bodies to verify an organisation's compliance with the standard and also by companies seeking registration who have to assess their system before being audited by an external body. Most of their time is spent walking around companies asking questions, so there is a real need for a handy book to assist auditors on the move which will help jog the memory when planning an audit away from home.


      A book containing many lists and tables is the ideal solution. The first five chapters cover the auditing process, first in outline and then more thoroughly, the four phases of an audit. There then follow another seven chapters each intended to assist auditors in some aspect of their job. Also included are some statistics on ISO 9000 which auditors can use to help others, a bibliography and a dictionary of auditing terms placed at the back for ease of use. There are also anecdotal case studies throughout the text which illustrate in a memorable manner the key concepts being examined.

      This book is geared around implementing ISO along the Business Managment Approach, essentially fortelling the coming of ISO 9000:2000.

      I had tried several other "published", "easy" methods for implementing ISO and found that the routine approaches were cumbersome, secular in that they focussed on each clause, and generally was a project plan requiring that all needed to divert their attention from the business and product development to writing 'clause' related procedures. In other words, they dropped the business and development process to write these procedures that seem to fall outside the scope of the business.

      This book offered for the first time a process management approach that, if sequenced properly, can merge seamlessly into the development of the business in parallel to the quality system development. I also noticed that auditors generally audited around the process management approach and not the clauses. This book provided the link I needed to develop a coherent strategy that can achieve ISO without disrupting the business and works well in both start ups and mature companies.

      This is a book that address comprehensively and rigourously all the auditing process. The effort and the success of David Hoyle to explain difficult concepts are very remarkable. The methodology "auditing by process" proposed by the author is going to be necessary with the ISO 9000 year 2000 edition. The chapter "tips for auditors" show, for example, his thorough knowledge and experience on the auditing field.

      The book is very useful for me and a permanent source of inspiration on my work as quality consultant and auditor. Really this book is a true "handbook".

      This book and also the others author's books are, in my opinión, clear references for the quality professional.

      In my opinion this book is completely unworkable. For a company to be able to follow this book and try to impliment what the author is suggesting would be an administrative nightmare. The company would have to be cash rich, non-competitive and be overstaffed to cope with doing things his way. I wonder if the author has any actual experience of putting in ISO 9000 in a commercial company because my company certainly could not afford to do it his way.

      This book is a refreshing reminder to convert the well crafted (often times static) business plan into a results oriented action plan. As a Senior Vice President of a top 10 US financial services organization, it is paramount that I create a business plan which is reviewed and modified frequently to ensure critical performance measures are achieved. "ON TARGET" offers easy to understand and implement review techniques which ensure positive results. It offers a relevent and reliable process to help monitor and control desireed outdomes. I highly recommend it.

      Similar in impact to "The One Minute Manager",(a small book) "On Target" (another small book) will have a large impact on managers and companies who want to set goals and then successfully manage them. It provides a practical approach to planning, organizing, managing and controlling both strategic and tactical objectives at all levels of an organization. It empowers managers by helping to ensure success which provides the personal motivation needed to achieve greater accomplishments. Too many business have lost sight of the goals of customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction that determine profitability. "On Target" helps to restore that reality.

      A surprisingly swift read, my copy of On Target is already dog-earred and well worn with multiple returns to it for more information. As a sales rep for a Fortune 100 company, I regularly receive company directives and reporting requirements. Effectively applying these directives and goals to my territory/franchise has been enhanced three fold by using Bechtell's "rapid strategy implementation." Her recommendations for regular reviews and revision of tactics has helped me analyze my business strategies and how I will achieve the goals set out for me by upper management. More importantly, Becthell outlines methods for recognizing when existing strategies are stagnant (and recognizing them in time to make change!!)

      Reveals the common causes of failed business plans and shows how to correct problems through learning how to: 1) identify priority measures as assess impact of each; 2) detect and respond to early warning signals; and 3) accelerate the change process. The focus is on review techniques, showing how to conduct periodic reviews to stay on target. Provides sample forms, tools, and graphs. This is a to-the-point book with solid guidance. Highly recommended.

      In today's business community there is too much resting on laurels, as it were. Bechtell brings forth reasons why this feature of today's business has ... and will ... lead to failure. Bechtell is able to see a problem, and, sans concern for where her solutions lead .... actually HAS solutions. As a businessman, world traveler and at times, a loser in the 'market" I applaud the common sensibilities Bechtell brings to her conclusions. On Target is a book which should repose on the DESK of every CEO in America and the industrialized world.

                                The author is a superb speaker but his writing lacks substance. Although I admire his attempt at using practical examples, many of them were not applicable to my business. The substantive information was very good but could have been contained in a speech or article.

                                The author is laso a great speaker, much better at speaking than writing. The anecdotes are superficial as the book is a compilation of presentation slides written in an afternoon.

                                Let's start with a premise: we'd all like to get full price for our goods and services. No one really wants to be on the losing end of a discount war. . . . and in that struggle, everybody loses. Full price sounds like a good idea. But, is it realistic? I began Winninger's latest book with a bit of skepticism.

                                Full Price begins with an emphasis on maximizing value perception. When I saw that phrase in the table of contents, I wondered what this book might say that hasn't already been said by countless authors beating the same drum. Aha! The difference is in the countless examples that illustrate every one of the author's points. Winninger walks his talk-the value of his book is certainly maximized by the real-life examples. I can't tell you how many ideas I gleaned from those examples-page after page of examples and best practices.

                                Winninger, founder of Winninger Institute for Market Strategy in Minneapolis, knows his stuff. He's a professional speaker and consultant who's worked with over a thousand companies in many fields. This is definitely a case of "been there, done that." You'll discover that value as you move through his 15 chapters. I chuckled when I noticed what the author did with the quotes at the start of each chapter. After quoting others for the first two chapters, he quoted himself for the rest! He must have enjoyed writing this book.

                                The book is organized very well. Chapter titles include Selling the Program, Vertical Integration, Segmenting Your Services to Targeted Customers, Owning the Customer's Buying Cycle, and Promoting Differences. This easy-to-read book gets more exciting as it continues, with chapters on Substantiating Value, Not Price; Living the Brand; Exploiting Technology; and Forging the Indestructible System. And every chapter is stuffed with best practice examples. Can you tell I was impressed with the way these examples brought the author's points to life?

                                The whole premise of the book is achieving Maximum Value Perception: seeking and fulfilling the highest need of your premium customer. Think about those words. Each is explained in the book, but let me share the questions that flow from the author's discussion: 1. Who is my premium customer? 2. What is my premium customer's highest need? 3. How do I determine my Maximum Value Perception? 4. How do I achieve Maximum Value Perception and receive full price? These questions are answered as the reader is stimulated, then we're off and running!

                                Fast read, summaries at the end of each chapter, validating footnotes, and a good index. This is a book you'll read eagerly, salivating at the thought of how you'll apply your learnings to overcome your competition. And this is a book you'll return to from time to time to stimulate more great ideas to differentiate yourself from the competition.

                                If you are looking for a book that offers you about 250 pages of grammatical errors, tenuous examples, and page after page of shameless self-promotion than this is the book for you. If not, then I suggest you keep shopping.

                                Through the many case studies in this book, Thom Winninger shows us how we can create value for our customers and clients. The bottom line is that he teaches us how to get our customers/clients to focus on what we can deliver rather than what we charge. I found this book easy to read, easy to understand and entertaining. The case studies (short and to the point) create examples that apply to just about every type of business.

                                  This is both a very good overview of the principles and practice of risk management and an excellent application of the principles to managing risks to organisational reputation.

                                  Reputation of an organisation is too often regarded simply as something for the public relations consultants. The author demonstrates the holistic nature of the influences on reputation and works through each of the aspects requiring management, and how they fit together.

                                  The only disadvantage of the book is that, because it is so thorough, reading it in full requires a fair commitment of time and attention. To assist the reader, the chapter structure is logical and subsections clearly identified and the many tables and charts provide an effective summary of key points. For those with primary responsibility for an organisation's policies and practices relating to reputation, it is an invaluable reference.

                                  The reputations of several major corporations (Enron, WorldCom, Parmalat and Tyco, to name a few) recently suffered from allegations of fraud, self-dealing, insider trading, accounting shenanigans and various other misdeeds. The sense of scandal became so pervasive that some businesspeople felt ashamed of their profession. Now, the mere rumor of misconduct is sufficient to send a company's stock price down. Ironically, in an era when the transnational corporations seem omnipotent in their globe-girdling might, many of them greatly resemble nubile maidens in an eighteenth century romance, their whole fate dependent on spotless and easily marred reputations. That being the case, every business and every business manager should prioritize the careful husbanding of reputation. We find that this book, which has been highly praised by some of the most estimable authorities on business ethics and management, offers a comprehensive, if sometimes pedantic, guide to every step of building, measuring, preserving and growing reputation capital.
