I have used this book for the last 4 years to help me plan my finances and complete my 1040 return. I love this book so much that I have purchased 2 of them as gifts, and I have passed on my old copies to friends. What more can I say, except no one needs to be afraid to invest in this book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to investing and how the annuity fits in........1998-11-30

With all the controversies of variable annuities today, Michael does an excellent job of showing the appropriateness of the annuity. The book was written at the basic level for the investor, capturing an informative overview of the many different investment options such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds and how the annuity fits into the investor's overall investment strategy. I would highly recommend this book to all investors!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book..........1998-11-25

I've read many different points of view about the value of VAs -- this book explains them clearly. Lane's book shows how tax deferral wroks. He takes you step-by-step so you can see how all the parts relate and why. Read chapters 5 "Suitable Uses of VAs" and ch 18 "Analyzing the Payout" and you will know more than most advisors. Great book congrads.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide for financial planners and end consumers........1998-11-25

Having been in this business for 5 years it's nice to find a refreshing look at the real uses of variable annuities and when they make the most sense. Michael is very enlightening in his approach to when a variable annuity makes sense and for whom. He also is very concise in his description of all the factors which contribute to determining the above. In an industry which is muddled with both the pros and cons of variable annuities this book is a straight shot to doing what is in the best interest of the client.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Annuity Buyers.......1998-11-25

I am a novice investor and had no idea what an annuity was. Lane's book gave me the basics of what stocks and bonds were all the way through how to buy and annuity and use it to create a income to last my lifetime. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must for those considering purchasing an annuity........1998-10-28

An excellent primer on annuities. Any investor should read this book before considering purchasing an annuity. As a financial advisor I found his explanations simple yet definitive. Written in manner that any investor will be able to benefit from Michael's sound advice. While I believe that in general annuities are the most oversold product in financial circles (not becuse they are great product but because sellers earn huge commissions), Michael clearly demonstrates that annuities are appropriate in certain situations and tells you how to avoid the annuities that were designed to be sold not bought. He shows you what to type of product to look for when annuities are appropriate. Highly recommended.

                      Book Description

Never again will project managers have to wonder how to change traditional committees into quality focused, horizon-expanding engines of change! This book links teaming principles, applications, and practices with remarkable ready-today/use-today/internalize-today power and clarity. Shuster emphasizes that teaming is an act, and that project managers must stop focusing on teams as things.

Compressed into a tightly organized format—in an informal easy-to-read style—this wonderfully resourceful book is constructed around two distinct, but closely interrelated disciplines: quality management and project management. It illuminates teaming principles, as well as sound direction on teaming tools/techniques and how to effectively implement them. The author uses a warm, personal approach to reach the reader on the intellectual level, as well as the emotional, imaginative, and moral levels.

Teaming for Quality places teaming into the overall quality management context, outlines a clear teaming theory and model, and presents a comprehensive user-friendly, step-by-step set of implementation procedures, techniques, and actions for addressing every conceivable kind of issue. It also reviews typical team histories and how to select group member. Appendices offer 32 teaming principles and a control systems theory, and these, along with Shuster's PIC—Process for Innovation and Consensus—serve as foundations for his ethically based approach to participatory management.

                          Book Description

With this book, Allan Kulikoff offers a sweeping new interpretation of the origins and development of the small farm economy in Britain's mainland American colonies. Examining the lives of farmers and their families, he tells the story of immigration to the colonies, traces patterns of settlement, analyzes the growth of markets, and assesses the impact of the Revolution on small farm society.

Beginning with the dispossession of the peasantry in early modern England, Kulikoff follows the immigrants across the Atlantic to explore how they reacted to a hostile new environment and its Indian inhabitants. He discusses how colonists secured land, built farms, and bequeathed those farms to their children. Emphasizing commodity markets in early America, Kulikoff shows that without British demand for the colonists' crops, settlement could not have begun at all. Most important, he explores the destruction caused during the American Revolution, showing how the war thrust farmers into subsistence production and how they only gradually regained their prewar prosperity.

3 out of 5 stars Worth three and a half stars, but not easy reading........2001-03-22

For nearly forty years, historians have concentrated their attention on the social history of the common people. In American historiography in particular, remarkable progress has been made in the history of slaves, industrial workers and the aboriginal inhabitants of the continent. But one group of people has not been treated with the prominence they deserve, and that is the rural majority of the first century and a half of the nation's existence. 95% of the United States was rural in 1776, and when you exclude the quarter that was slave and aboriginal, you have 70% that consisted of country people and their families, most of whom had or would eventually own land. It is clear that this high level of economic independence was crucial to the development of American democracy. Allan Kulikoff's book is the first of a multi-volume series that will examine the history of the American yeomen. Kulikoff concentrates on how farmers sought a degree of independence and security from the capitalist market. "Capitalist transformation, then, stands at the center of our story." In contrast to other historians Kulikoff argues that capitalism, crucially defined as a system of wage labor, "had not yet reached our shores as late as the American Revolution."

The result is a synthesis of the Colonial farmer to the American Revolution based on amazingly extensive reading of the secondary literature. This has to be the first book where the bibliography (104 pages) is longer than the endnotes (73 pages), and Kulikoff seems to have read every scholarly article on rural history. However, the actual connection between yeomanry and the rise of democracy is slated for another volume, as is their eventual demise. What we have here is a book that discusses the economics changes that lead the British and later the Germans to move to America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We have a chapter on how emigration took place, how the new immigrants met and eventually conquered the Indians, how they expanded up until 1776 and how they set up households and fixed themselves in relations to markets. Crucial to Kulikoff's account is how enclosure and other acts against the peasantry encouraged mass migration. Most migrants in fact moved within Europe (either to Ulster or to Eastern Europe), but enough moved to the Western hemisphere to successfully conquer it.

All this is very thorough and thoughtful but it is not easy reading. One problem is that Kulikoff abbreviates the books he is citing in his notes, so not only do you have to turn from your reading to the endnotes(which is always irritating), but then you often have to move from the endnotes to the bibliography. I am aware that many readers have a philistine prejudice against footnotes, but since this is not a book for a general audience their opinions should be ignored. Because of the structural focus of Kulikoff's work, the human element is somewhat downplayed in this book. Despite talking about such subjects as the dispossession of the British peasantry, war and atrocities against the Indians, the beating of wives and the maltreatment of servants, Kulikoff writes about these subjects in a style with the life bleached out of it. The contrast with Thompson and Genovese is striking. One might cruelly say that there is much here about demography, but little actual sex, much about diet as an ecological concept but little about food. While Kulikoff is right to discuss the ill-treatment of servants, the subordination of women and the first shoots of the weeds of a rural proletariat, more could have been said about the general trends in the standard of living, especially compared to Britain. Moreover what scholarly differences Kulikoff has are confined to brief comments in the endnotes, so Kulikoff's own voice is blurred. The result is that it is not clear to the reader that Kulikoff is saying something new. As such his emphasis that farmers were not simply small scale capitalists and that landownership rates rose as high as 90% in many areas of America is not made as forcefully as it could be. Only the last chapter, actually the epilogue, does Kulikoff come to life as he portrays a new picture of the American Revolution as a violent conflict, with various armies looting and pillaging both sides. There was mass emigration and hundreds were killed, indeed murdered, in Indian wars alone. (One remembers in particular the massacre of 90 peaceful praying Moravian Delawares who were slaughtered by frontier militia as they sang hymns and prayed.) Given the way American conservatives have prided themselves on their "successful" revolution in contrast to the French, it is very useful to learn that the per-capital income dropped more than 40% during the decade of revolution and had not returned to its pre-war level thirty years later. One can only wait for the next volume.

                                Book Description

As the influence of labor unions declines in many industrialized nations, particularly the United States, the influence of workers has decreased. Because of the need for greater involvement of workers in changing production systems, as well as frustration with existing structures of workplace regulation, the search has begun for new ways of providing a voice for workers outside the traditional collective bargaining relationship.

Works councils—institutionalized bodies for representative communication between an employer and employees in a single workplace—are rare in the Anglo-American world, but are well-established in other industrialized countries. The contributors to this volume survey the history, structure, and functions of works councils in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Poland, Canada, and the United States. Special attention is paid to the relations between works councils and unions and collective bargaining, works councils and management, and the role and interest of governments in works councils. On the basis of extensive comparative data from other Western countries, the book demonstrates powerfully that well-designed works councils may be more effective than labor unions at solving management-labor problems.

The H-2 program, originally based in Florida, is the longestrunning labor-importation program in the country. Over the course of a quarter-century of research, Griffith studied rural labor processes and their national and international effects. In this book, he examines the socioeconomic effects of the H-2 program on both the areas where the laborers work and the areas they are from, and, taking a uniquely humanitarian stance, he considers the effects of the program on the laborers themselves.

                                  Book Description

In the United States, less than one worker in five is currently in a labor union, while in Sweden, virtually the entire workforce is unionized. Despite compelling evidence for their positive effects, even the strongest European unions are now in retreat as some policymakers herald the U.S. model of market deregulation. These differences in union power significantly affect workers' living standards and the fortunes of national economies. What explains the enormous variation in unionization and why has the last decade been so hostile to organized labor? Bruce Western tackles these questions in an analysis of labor union organization in eighteen capitalist democracies from 1950 to 1990. Combining insights from sociology and economics in a novel way, Western views unions as the joint product of market forces and political and economic institutions.

The author argues that three institutional conditions are essential for union growth: strong working-class political parties, centralized collective bargaining, and union-run unemployment insurance. These conditions shaped the impact of market currents and explain variations across industries, across countries, and over time for the four decades since 1950. Between Class and Market traces the story of the postwar labor movements supported by a blend of historical investigation and sophisticated statistical analysis in an innovative framework for comparative research. Western tightly integrates institutional explanation and comparative method in a way that balances comparative generality with the unique historical experiences of specific cases.

The author undertakes a highly complex statistical study of 18 OECD countries during the period from 1950 to 1989 that correlates the growth of union density with the extent of left political parties, the centralization of worker representation and bargaining, that is, union structure and function, and union-paid unemployment benefits. The main point is that it is the class power of workers as reflected in pro-worker institutions that insulates unions from market forces such as the business cycle and permits unions to grow or maintain their standing.

This is not a book that makes an effort to find the historical basis of worker class power: why it exists in some places but not others. Furthermore, the reader cannot discern from this study the relative importance of class power as reflected in left political parties versus that reflected in centralized union structures and roles. Which way do the arrows of dependency point? Which comes first?

The author does show that those nations that have a strong mix of pro-worker institutions have been best prepared to withstand the forces of political conservatism, large unemployment levels, and globalization that emerged in the 1980s and continue to the present day.

The book is somewhat difficult and tedious to read. Its origin was for a PhD dissertation. It was assumed that the audience would have a background in advanced statistics, but there is room for the general reader. Furthermore, the book largely falls in the category of proving the obvious. At least by the 1930s it was obvious to all working classes that state and state-enabled or -permitted institutions ultimately based on workers' political power would be essential for their economic well being. Nonetheless, the book is interesting in its demonstrations of the importance of institutional power.

The hiring of part-time and temporary workers has historically been a mechanism for adjusting imbalances between supply and demand in the labor market. The use of such workers has increased dramatically as technological changes have put a premium on flexibility, and as fringe benefits have come to constitute an increasing percentage of labor costs. Flexibility is sought not only by organizations, but also by individuals: students, women with children, disabled persons, and retirees all benefit by part-time opportunities. Part-Time Work discusses these opportunities, and the risk involved in employment which is sometimes underpaid and devalued, and from which movement to full-time positions is difficult. This volume represents the work of a cross-section of specialists in labor economics, industrial relations specialists, and social scientists who are engaged in research on the transformation of work in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. Chapters focus on the structural aspects of part-time work, conditions under which such work is performed, constraints imposed on employers by official agencies, and expectations and attitudes of part-time workers rooted in a particular society. Part-Time Work will prove particularly useful to sociologists, labor specialists, and relevant government agencies, organizations, and unions.

                                      Book Description

Recent economic trends are changing forever the face of Japanese industrial relations; Japanese Management and Labour explores these changes. Authors Mari Sako and Hiroko Sato examine the responses of both Japanese management and labour, and that of the Japanese government, to these economic transitions. In Part 1 of the work, recent trends in Japanese labour markets, labour law and corporate strategy are explored. As labour and management yield to these new economic pressures, changes in industrial relations are shown to be the inevitable result. Part 2 analyses the interaction between the state, management and labour. Both the macro and the micro levels are given full consideration, as the government of Japan seeks to strike a balance between the often antithetical needs of labour and management. This compilation of current research has been collected by leading Japanese scholars, and effectively challenges the traditional view of `lifetime' employment while focusing on the growing economic pressures that Japanese management and labour currently face. Japanese Management and Labour is sure to add to the lively debate now taking place regarding management in recessionary Japan.

                                        Book Description

During the past two decades, wages of skilled workers in the United States rose while those of unskilled workers fell; less-educated young men in particular have suffered unprecedented losses in real earnings. These twelve original essays explore whether this trend is unique to the United States or is part of a general growth in inequality in advanced countries.

Focusing on labor market institutions and the supply and demand forces that affect wages, the papers compare patterns of earnings inequality and pay differentials in the United States, Australia, Korea, Japan, Western Europe, and the changing economies of Eastern Europe. Cross-country studies examine issues such as managerial compensation, gender differences in earnings, and the relationship of pay to regional unemployment.

From this rich store of data, the contributors attribute changes in relative wages and unemployment among countries both to differences in labor market institutions and training and education systems, and to long-term shifts in supply and demand for skilled workers. These shifts are driven in part by skill-biased technological change and the growing internationalization of advanced industrial economies.

                                          Book Description

With contributions from members of the Institute for Comparative Labour Relations Research and other specialists in the field, this book sheds new light on the way people in Russia cope with economic reform in post-Soviet Russia. This book identifies and explains gender differences in responses to Russia's transformed economic environment, and reveals the way in which these influence both a labor market outcomes and the well-being of men and women.

Drawing upon analysis based on original research including a series of qualitative interviews, the experienced team of sociologists chart the progress of 120 men and 120 women through the turbulent Russian labor market of 1999-2001. The study includes chapters on the way gender norms inherited from the Soviet era have influenced responses to transition; sex segregation and discrimination in the labor market; gender differences in work orientations and behavior; who benefits from networks; and which life events are most likely to initiate downward economic trajectories.

                                              Book Description

Although in the 1960s and mid-1970s scholars began to question the ability of Israeli Arabs to find equal employment opportunities, there has been no systematic study of employment discrimination against Arabs. Based on demographic data and fieldwork in 48 large Israeli corporations, this study fills that void. While the demographic data indicates the Arabs' disadvantaged position, Wolkinson also provides new insights obtained from interviews with personnel managers and union representatives on the nature and scope of Arab employment, recruitment and selection criteria used in employing workers, management's assessment of Arab performance and managerial, union and worker attitudes toward Arab employment. Having identified a complex web of discriminatory barriers to Arab employment, Wolkinson evaluates the current legal framework and recommends changes in government, employer and union policies to promote equal employment opportunities for Arabs. Located in geographical areas with large Arab populations, the corporations studied afforded significant insight into the kinds of jobs Arabs obtain in Israeli society, enabling the author to identify a complex web of discriminatory barriers corporations have erected to restrict Arab employment.

The case studies were amusing and enjoyable, thus helping to guide me through the theoretical concepts that would of been other wise too overwhelming.
