    I really was very close to an emotional mental/physical breakdown at some points during my dissertation & this book let me know that no matter how alone I felt, I was not alone. Other people actually DID know what I was going through. Good use of humor too. Read BEFORE you embark on this last step, it will help to prepare you. Remember the "P" in PhD is for perseverance.

        No company can afford to sit on the sidelines as e-business takes off in the global digital economy. The time to get going is now, warns IBM e-business expert Tim R. Wroblewski who spells out a strategy on what to do in his new book, Global Digital Business.com.

        To lead a company into the digital economy, management must act on what he identifies as the necessary ingredients: "Your company needs to have a Global Digital Business.com strategy, which is that set of dynamic, integrated business management and e-business decisions that create stealth global business advantages for the 2020 Digital Economy."

        Taking a cue from stealth technology, he advocates a strategic scenario that takes the competition by surprise in establishing marketplace supremacy. As examples of "stealth" companies, he cites IBM, Schwab.com, Ariba, Cisco, Dell, eBay.com, i2 Technologies, Akamai, Intel, CommerceOne, VerticalNet, and e-chemicals, among others.

        Of the four possibilities (i.e. laggard, parity, leader, leaper) facing companies, neither lagging behind nor settling for parity has ever been acceptable. Now, being a leader is not good enough. It's necessary, Wroblewski says, to "leap" beyond the competition before it realizes what's happening. Otherwise, a company is at risk, as happened with a Fortune 500 company that suddenly found itself threatened by the e-business initiative of its main rival. Then came the call to IBM consultants: "We need IBM's expertise to become a global e-business."

        To become a stealth company, Wroblewski recommends a three-part response:
        * Business Strategy -- a set of dynamic, integrated decisions that position a company in its marketplace by encompassing production, financial, marketing and R&D.
        * IT Strategy -- information technology decisions that support business objectives and propel the company past the competition in serving customer needs, meeting regulatory requirements and providing a return to stakeholders.
        * Global Digital Business.com strategy -- integrating management and e-business decisions to create stealth competitive advantages.

        What emerges is a "stealth company that is not easily visible" initially as it gains first mover advantage. In the 2020 Digital Economy, such a company will have an unconventional structure, integrate components in the value chain, have virtually no overhead, thrive on innovation and undertake risky projects. It will package technology to benefit from synergy by using technology components as a whole rather than in terms of individual parts.

        For management, this means moving from a traditional hands-off approach to a hands-on approach that integrates business and e-business strategy to meet and exceed business objectives. In a world where change is measured in "Web days" rather than years or months, Wroblewski pinpoints the areas where change has speeded up exponentially:

        * New products and services
        * Digital convergence
        * Knowledge chain innovation
        * Infrastructure ownership and management
        * Global Digital Business growth
        * New Markets (aggregator, auction, exchange)

        Wroblewski points to changes in the nature of commerce and work and in the boundaries of industry. At the level of commerce, change encompasses customer intimacy, rising customer expectations, electronic commerce, mass customization and global delivery. Work is changing in the direction of collaboration, the rise of the knowledge worker, mobile work forces and flexibility in the Web environment. Industries are changing through focused competencies, external collaboration, resource effectiveness, management of strategic events, and leveraging of information technology.

        As these changes open up opportunities, the main arena of competition shifts from products to services. To respond, Wroblewski calls upon company leaders to develop a vision and then to demonstrate "the creative talent and courageous management to turn that vision into reality."

        In pointing out that digital convergence is uniting the functions of the computer, the telephone and the TV, Wroblewski envisions massive reorganization and restructuring. Industries where this is already happening include publishing, transportation, consumer electronics, financial services and education.

        Within an enterprise, Wroblewski calls for total involvement by everyone in pursuing the opportunities in the digital economy. He adds a challenge to company leadership: "Business and e-business strategy is a journey, not a destination. Your job is to guide your company along that journey."

This book surveys the writings of a large number of economists in the interwar years and argues that the "Keynesian Revolution" is a myth, and that the "new economics" was a careful and selective synthesis of an "old economics" that had been developing for twenty years or more.

        Laidler writes the following in the preface to his book :"...I have relied first and foremost on my reading of primary sources...In this way,I hope that readers who disagree with me about any particular point will be able to go directly to the sources of my views and test for themselves those views,as well as their own,against the evidence.After all,the decisive element in any debate in the history of economic thought must always be what the primary liturature actually says."(p.xiv).Unfortunately ,Laidler(L)doesn't follow his own advice.A major portion of the evidence is the mathematical models constructed by Pigou in his 1933 book, The Theory of Unemployment(TU), and by Keynes in his 1936 book ,The General Theory(GT).None of the mathematical modeling of Keynes or Pigou appears anywhere in L's book.In fact,it appears that Laidler deliberately skipped all of the relevant primary mathematical evidence.This lacuna is so great that it would be a waste of the potential reader's time to attempt to follow L in his unsupported claims and conjectures.Finally, Keynes didn't fabricate his GT.It is easily derived from chapters 3,10,20 and 21 of the GT.Pigou's special theory is easily derived from chapters 8-10 of Part II of TU.Keynes then compares the two theories in his appendix to chapter 19 in great detail.Keynes shows that Pigou's theory is that full employment will always automatically result if the real wage is equal to the marginal product of labor.Let w equal a fixed uniform money wage.Let p be the general price level in Pigou and the expected general price level in Keynes.Let MPL be the marginal product of labor in a short run analysis with the capital stock held constant.Pigou's special theory states that a full employment, macroscopic level of output occurs if w/p,the real wage,equals the MPL(w/p=MPL).Keynes's general theory of employment occurs if and only if w/p=MPL/(mpc+mpi).The marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods is denoted as mpc and the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods(factories,plants,equipment and machinery)is denoted as mpi .Pigou's theory is a special case of Keynes's general theory that occurs when mpc+mpi=1.Only in this case would you have no involuntary unemployment.If mpc+mpi is less than 1 then some amount of labor will always be involuntarily unemployed.It(mpc+mpi=1) requires that the economy is always operating on the boundary of the Production Possibilities Curve.The potential reader is advised not to waste his time and money purchasing this book.

          Good information for anybody in sales, and probably worth the price of the book, but I found it to be very repetitive. "Vendors sell like this, but Consultative Sellers sell like that." Then I skipped a few chapters ahead - same thing. I'm an independent consultant who has recently added a couple of product lines, so I'm new to product sales. I personally like Alan Weiss's books, especially Million Dollar Consulting or The Ultimate Consultant, which explains the same philosophy - sell results to the client, not your product - but has more details about how to do it. Save yourself some time and read one of Weiss's books and apply it to your sales.

          This book is in it's 7th printing and it is a gem! I am currently working with one of the world's largest software companies on a process that they call Value Engineering. While it is more refined than the process that Mr. Hanan describes, he is definitely the original thought leader around delivering measurable value to the customer. I highly recommend this to anyone that is looking to get beyond the "mushy" superlatives that salespeople like to throw around. It gives you the formula on how to build a powerful business case and deliver it to the right stakeholder! If you are in the sales game you need to read this book.

          In brief, this book is about finding the win/win solution. It is the art of exploring, proposing, and delivering something which simultaneously serves the needs of both the customer and salesman. Sounds good in theory, but how well does it work in practice? More importantly, how do you make it work in practice? This book will put Spin Selling into practice and reinforce a salesman consultative skills.

          I got this book thinking it would deal with how to sell idea's. It's focus relates is moving from a price based purchaser interface sales model to a function based user sales model.

          I like it for the general philosophy, but is was geared more for the sales individual. It also focused too much on other stuff you could get from the author.

                                          This book goes to the psycologic side of the sales and how to convince tje people to buy from you instead to sale to Them. It's very simple tom understand, has a lot of examples. It's not a how to book. If you are new in sales read something elese.

                                          They sure won't work if you are selling big ticket items, such as houses, cars, planes, factory equipment or the like.

                                          If you are looking for a difficult to master but good book, go to Rackham's SPIN selling. It is both research based AND effective. Dawson is just a rehash of every sales gimmick you or he has ever read about.

                                          If you look, you will see I liked his negotiation gimmicks -- but only if tempered with other's work to set tone and style (and more). In sales, unlike negotiation, the gimmicks tend to be instant death.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Where's the bibliography.......2005-04-22

                                          I flipped through this book in the book store. It's a great little book. It has all sorts of "tricks" for getting people to do what you want them to do. In fact, a lot of his ideas were paraphrased wholesale from Robert Cialdini. I read a little further. There's some NLP thrown in too. I read a little further, and saw some things that weren't familiar to me.

                                          I really wish the author quoted his sources instead of making it seem like he was telling you all these things from firsthand experience instead of from a handful of books, but as a collection, it's pretty good. I flipped around for footnotes, a bibliography, endnotes, anything to let me know what his sources were, but there were none.

                                          Since I was only familiar with about 60 to 70% of his material, I'd pick it up just to have the complete list, but I'd rather go back to the original sources. Perhaps that's why he didn't include a bibliography? Otherwise he'd be generating sales for someone else.

                                          Anyway, if you're not familiar with these things, get Influence by Cialdini and Frogs into Princes by Bandler & Grinder. If you are, well, this book is a nice summation, and adds some new stuff as well.

He warns you away from manipulation, though he doesn't hesitate to use some forms of it, along with psychological insight, time pressure, friendship, subliminal messages and outright emotion to persuade clients to buy. Dawson writes in an easy-to-read, breezy, yet authoritative style and includes tricks, techniques, clever anecdotes and chapter summaries. The book is as well organized as a speech in which Dawson tells you what he is going to say, says it and then tells you what he just said. We recommend this book to people who want to sell better, and who have the starch to use intense powers of persuasion.
