    Book Description

This book provides a bridge from learning the theory of school administration to the practical problem solving in which school principals and other leaders engage. This book continues to be based on the research indicating linkages between educational leadership and productive schools, especially in terms of outcomes for children. It supports the understanding that formal leadership in schools is a complex, multi-faceted task that requires continual learning and that effective school leaders must be strong educators focused on the central issues of learning, teaching, and school improvement. School leaders must also be moral agents and social advocates for the children and communities they serve while working with community stakeholders to create learning communities that value and care for others as individuals and as members of the educational community. For those aspiring to become principals or hold leadership positions.

4 out of 5 stars interesting introduction to quality tools and strategies.......2000-12-14

This texts assumes little mathematics and no statistical training. It is intended to teach engineering students and managers the basic tools and strategies for successful quality control and management. The authors are statisticians, so the importance of probability and statistics is emphasized and taught from first principles. Yet the first five Chapters (Section 1 of the book), does not deal with statistics at all! The authors describe quality problems and strategies for solving problems. This involves sketching the importance of data and data analysis and mentioning the various statistical tools in the context of the roles they play. Chapter 2 deals with ways of detecting quality porblems and includes flowcharting processes, the use of scorecards and Pareto diagrams. Chapter 3 deals with problem solving techniques and cause-and-effect diagrams. Chapter 4 deals with group problem solving including quality circles and the delphi technique for reaching a consensus. Section 1 concludes with the use of a rewards system to facilitate employee involvement in quality improvement.

In Section 2 basic statistical concepts are introduced as they are needed. Chapter 6 deals with ways to measure productivity and collect data. Chapter 7 covers graphical displays, descriptive statistics and probability distributions and concludes with an enumeration of Ishikawa's seven basic tools. Formal probability is introduced in Chapter 8, survey sampling in Chapter 9, statistical inference under simple random sampling in Chapter 10, acceptance sampling in Chapter 11, statistical process control in Chapter 12, process capability indices in Chapter 13 (a good introductory treatment). Section 2 is Chapters 6-11 covering the tools for data analysis. Chapters 12 and 13 are separated as Section 3 covering process stabilization and predictability. Several real projects are described at the end of Section 3. Section 4 is on design of experiments covering Chapters 14 -16. Chapters 14 and 15 deal with classical statistical designs while Chapter 16 deals with Taguchi designs that are useful for determining robust conditions and process improvement. Many useful applications are given to illustrate the techniques. Other useful statistical methods in quality control are relegated to Chapter 17. This includes regression analysis, response surface methods and model selection procedures.

This is an excellent text for a first course....

5 out of 5 stars GROUNDING STRATEGY IN THE FLUIDITY OF MARKET REALITY!.......2005-04-23

Presents the Global Marketing Advantage System (GMAS), based on breakthrough thinking, a methodology with which multiple stakeholder groups can address issues and problems. GMAS links strategy with market reality. It is defined as the knowledge, experience, systems, processes, techniques, training and software tools required to generate and maintain a global market advantage. At the center of the system is STORM (Strategic, Tactical Operational Review Meeting)-which links strategic planning, staff, operational planning, and execution, real-time critical assumptions, and monitoring and testing. The GMAS objective is to ensure alignment of strategic and operational planning, and derive synergy from market intelligence. The book explains this highly adaptable approach to strategic planning in detail, and is filled with a wealth of information and insights. If you're looking for an approach to linking strategy to the fluidity of market reality, this book is one you owe it to yourself to read.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful Set of Ideas!.......2002-09-17

This is an extremely readable and well-written book. I am not exactly a marketing buff but I could follow the concepts and ideas presented in the book without any difficuty at all. The book is full of interesting anecdotes and live case studies from leading organisations around the world. I am sure most companies could gain tremendously if they adopted even some of the ideas presented in this book. And, the good thing is that it's presented in such a modular fashion that Mr. Michaluk's system could be implemented in single modules at a time.

5 out of 5 stars So obvious why do we not do it?.......2002-08-17

This book outlines why planning currently fails and how to make it work. It explains the concept of real-time right time. It simply makes plannning work. It places the points are so clear I can't understand why we were not doing what this book recommends. Its simply one of the best books I have read on the subject of strategic planning. I don't think he is quite Scotland's "Porter" but he sure makes it clear what we should be doing.

                Book Description

This is the first legal and financial history of bankruptcy in nineteenth-century England. V. Markham Lester offers a full statistical analysis and detailed account of bankruptcy, imprisonment for debt, and company winding-up, and traces the decline in the level of insolvency towards the end of the century. His scholarly and detailed analysis demonstrates the validity of the Victorians' notion that financial failure was a significant problem for English society. Dr Lester shows that random factors may have played as great a role as cyclical fluctuations in bankruptcy levels. Victorian Insolvency also adds a new and significant dimension to the debate on government growth by analysing for the first time the part the English legal system played in the growth of British government. By the end of the nineteenth century, the administration of bankrupt estates was one of the largest items of government expenditure. Dr Lester sets Victorian management of insolvency in the context of other nineteenth-century legal and financial reforms and assesses its role in the development of the modern British state.

                5 out of 5 stars I am a gay husband.......2006-09-24

I am a gay married man who is at the crossroads of his life. After 14 years of living with a woman who is loving, kind, and understanding, I have decided to make the most difficult decision in my life to date--namely, be honest with her. After reading the book "Straight Wives, Shattered Lives," by Bonnie Kaye,I realize that the longer I withhold this truth from her, the more damage I am doing to her life. When I read some of the stories of these women in the book, I was faced with the reality of what I am doing to my own wife. I have fought these feelings of male attractions for many years. I wanted to be the husband my wife needs. I never meant to hurt her. I take my marriage vows very seriously. I married her because I was in love with her, and I still love her so much. But now I realize that I can never love her in the way she deserves to be loved--totally and completely. I know this because I have read the book "Forbidden Love With a Married Man: Email Diaries" by Dennis Schleicher. In his story, I saw the kind of relationship that I too desire with someone of the same sex. Between these two books, I realized I had to be honest with myself before I could be honest with my wife. I know my life will never be the same after I reveal this news, but I don't want to keep hiding behind a lie. Wish me luck.

                    Book Description

The foibles of clients and idiosyncrasies of chief executive officers, told as only their public relations and public affairs staffers can, make for amusing, wry and true stories in Not For Attribution. Annual meetings, annual reports, press conferences, media relations and special events don't always go as planned, sometimes with hilarious results. Not For Attribution is the first ever volume to contain more than two hundred such entertaining anecdotes, contributed by members of their rapidly-growing profession with "real world" experience.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Fun.......2000-10-13

I think John Allen's NOT FOR ATTRIBUTION is amusing and enlightening for any PR practioner, or for someone who is considering entering the field, or for anyone who wonders what goes on in the sometimes zany profession.

Allen gives telling, real-life examples of successful projects as well as embarrasing failures.

His 200 anecdotes covers travails from piercing the Iron Curtain with a Russian-language annual report to dealing with a camera shy but caustic C.E.O.

                    Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and informative.......2000-04-26

This is a delightful, but informative, collection of true incidents from the often misunderstood world of public and government relations.

For working professionals, and those about to enter the field, the book illuminates some of the situations that occur all too often, but are rarely if ever taught or written about. Any reader will gain both a better understanding of how public and government relations really works, and the conditions under which the practitioners sometimes must operate.

The author, known to me for many years, is a broadly experienced professional, with an exceptional writing talent. His careful editing of the stories he gathered for this collection reflects both his skill at clearly presenting the gist of an incident, while capturing the lighter side of the profession.

I recommend the book not only to those entering or already in the field, but as a quick and entertaining way for business executives to obtain a better understanding of the art of public and government relations.

                        Book Description

The interplay between demand from the market, the role of users in shaping that demand, and the way in which these factors influence the innovation process has always been a complex one. This forward thinking book examines this interplay from a technological change perspective.

The contributors explore the potential for rapprochement between economics, sociological and other social science disciplines in considering the allocation of resources and the making of decisions about technological change. The papers within this book represent a judicious blend of theory and empirical research and look at a broad range of innovations, markets and technologies in medicine, agricultural and food production, services and IT. Technology and the Market raises the question of the many `visible hands' that are involved in linking technology and the market together.

This book is recommended to academics and policymakers interested in demand-innovation interaction, scholars of industrial economics and the sociology of technology as well as entrepreneurs.

Understanding user needs is now seen as one of the most important factors in the success of innovation and one of the raisons d'être of market research. This book attempts to move the boundaries to show the importance of how demand is detected or constructed by innovators.

No matter what high-tech field you work in, but particularly in software development, shortening project time is of vital importance in gaining a competitive advantage. Here's the how-to book that describes a radical technique for doing just that. Taking an approach adopted from the motion picture industry, this innovative resource teaches you how to utilize techniques, such as "strip boarding" that greatly reduce project time and cost.

From identifying project boundaries, calculating the reward of projects completed early, and building Work Breakdown Structures… to conducting risk analysis, monitoring and controlling a plan, and selling a plan to the powers that be, this book will help you cut project time while improving effectiveness. The book includes a fully-worked, industrial-strength example of the planning and execution of a software project, using the techniques described.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title - highly recommended.......2001-07-08

This book is a condensed, fast paced approach to managing projects. Don't be misled by the title into believing that the theme is about managing web projects - it's about reducing the cycle time involved in initiating and managing projects, and the steps you need to take in order to ensure both speed of delivery and overall success of the project.

The approach is presented in informal style. I actually felt as though Mr. O'Connell was mentoring me through a project. He starts with a discussion of project management in general and some key issues, such as how much planning is enough, ensuring the project is valid and cost-effective, and setting scope. When he moves into the planning stage of the project he starts off with a work breakdown structure (WBS). I definitely like this approach because, in my opinion, any planning that does not start with a WBS is doomed to almost certain failure. He also covers estimating, and who should be doing it. Again, I'm in complete agreement with his advice that the best estimators are the people who will be doing the actual work. He also covers risk management, schedule optimization and all of the "due diligence" steps a good project manager would accomplish. Project execution and control is treated in the same methodical manner as planning. All of the key items are addressed, such as continuous monitoring and schedule refinement, resource allocation and status reporting. In this section the methods Mr. O'Connell proposes are reinforced with a week-by-week description of an example project. This adds a lot of credibility to how approach and also makes learning project management from this book relatively easy.

There is much to like about this book: Mr. O'Connell's engaging writing style, a sensible approach to planning, scheduling and controlling projects that leaves nothing out, and the worked examples that are provided in every chapter. Most importantly, though, is the fact that the book lives up to its promise of showing you how to run *successful* projects in web time, because the approach that is presented contains no fluff, and eliminates a lot of rework or lost efficiency by doing the right things the right way - the first time.
